Re.: PSION 5 and Email - There is of course the SmtpAuth program for the Psions written by Marcus von Cube. However, I am not sure whether this will work on the S5 or not. In order to free memory you can always close all other programs but the email. I started it on my netBok and it needs abt. 3M of memory.<<
Or try XJmail, which gives smtp authentication and will work on ER3 most definitely. I use it on my Mako and my Series 5/Osaris for my Earthlink email.

Subject: Re: Sidekick, or Blackbery, or forget it?
From: Jim Watson-Gove <address truncated> of the machines offered are the Sidekick and the Blackberry.
1. Do either or both of these work well as phones?
2. Do they work well in PIM functions (Agenda and Address book)?
3. Is there backup capability for agenda and address book to either flash or, better yet, to a Windows desktop?
Jim, I now use a BlackBerry 8300 for all my e-mails. But if I rated my 5mx + Nokia 6210 at 95%, then the BB would be only 2%.
I've got an e-mail only account so can't comment on 1.
The addressbook on it's own is OK. Sync with Outlook 2002 is poor at first. But spend a lot of time to remove duplicates it makes and move text between fields to put it in the correct place, it then becomes OK.
I've never used Outlook (any version) for my agenda as it's always, from 3a days, been on a Psion.
I did however sync my S7 Agenda to Outlook and then to the BB. A complete waste of time. I then had to empty it in Outlook as it fouls up future syncs. I've still not completely sorted this.
The BB comes with a CD. Install the software to your Windows PC. The BB is powered by the USB cable ( or a wallwart with USB skt).
The BB PC software will backup when connected depending on how you've set the option. Mine is set to 1 day, so if I want a second backup in a day, I can also do a manual one.
The restore works OK as my first BB had a fault and was replaced. The restore was 100%.
However there is a very big but. It's not possible to use the single backup file. So no information can be used. (It's possible to read in a text program, if you ignore all the binary)
It's possible to exchange JPG and MP3 files (+ multi media files) between the card in the BB and the PC desktop open folder. But although text files can be sent to the BB for use as attachments in e-mails, they can't be opened!
The only way to exchange text files and e-mail files is to forward them as an e-mail.
I have just discovered that if the 'Memopad' is used on the BB to hold text, it is synced to Outlooks Notes folder. So two way text is possible but very time consuming.
To copy an e-mail from the BB, every header has to be copied one by one to the memo, then the body text in the same way.
That way is..... The only way to move the cursor is by use of the small trackball. Various keys are used to start marking and end marking. Moving between apps requires pressing many keys and use of the trackball.
So a BB is very poor. Or I should rather say, it's software is very poor.
As an example. It's not possible to edit quoted text in a reply such as this. The whole of the original text appears in the reply. You leave it all in or delete it all.
Before replying use the trackball to select part of the text you need to quote. You can only select one block of text. Then reply and paste the text. Using the trackball, select part of the pasted text not required. Repeat for any more sections of text not required.
Then type your reply between the quoted bits of text. (In practice one deletes as one adds new text)
BB good points:-
1. It's available to buy new.
2. It uses instant receive of e-mails.
3. It's colour screen is very good (what there is of it!)
4. It's small so fits any pocket.
Everything else is very very poor. It needs a quality programmer to completely re-write it's software.

Unfortunately you gave some bad advice, because *no* media is safe. The only way to keep things safe is to have multiple (backup) copies. In my case I keep most important stuff on the C disk, backup to the D disk, and then occasionally backup my D disk to my PC (using a CF card reader), and then backup my PC to an external hard disk, and then swap that hard disk with one in a safe place....
However, this advice is not much help for you now :-( but maybe it will help you in the future.

It sounds like the filing system is corrupt, and all files on it are at risk. Do NOT make any further changes to it, or you may loose everything!
First step is to try to save everything that you can, by copying it to your PC (using a CF card reader) or else your Psions C disk.
Second step is to try to repair your CF disk. I do *not* recommened ScanDisk on a Windows computer, because it usually makes matters worse on Psion disks! Much better to download Atelier's "Essential Disk Utilities" from http://www.pscience5.net/LFUtils.htm,and install CheckDisk on your Psion's *C* disk - please do not put anything on your corrupt CF disk! Now use CheckDisk to check/correct the D disk - ask a local geek if you are not sure how to answer any questions that CheckDisk asks you.
Even if manage to repair the CF disk, chances are that your Agenda file is gone for good, or corrupted even if still accessible. If you manage to get a partially readable Agenda file, then make a NEW Agenda file, and then use File > More > Merge in... to try to recove data from the old/corrupt file

TomTom 5 on the M2000 crashed/clashed/locked up unusably frequently. (Is it worth upgrading to TomTom6?)
I am looking for a neck-pouch so that I can use TomTom while cycling - stray screen/button touches disable the M5000/HTC Universal programme/speakers. Any suggestions, please? Does anyone have experience with the ProPorta offerrings? I had the aluminium case on the M2000 - this stopped accidental touch screen presses but had no lanyard attachment point. (I also broke off the belt clip tapping)

Thanks. Since posting I found a back-up/restore programme on the phone and have backed up to a storage card.
I suspect part of the problem is the latest offerrings from Micro$oft for syncronising - the device manager on Vista does not do what the old programme used to do on XP and defaulted to override the mobile's tasks!; the upgrade for XP seems so slow.

Ok, I'll ask! Please could we have details...
How large a storage card will the phone support? 4Gb are available, so I'd likely use one of those.
The phone also has Windows Media Player, but when I copied across BBC MP3 audio files downloaded to Vista and then copied across to the
M5000 the programme refused to run and complained they had not been made by PocketPC! Any ideas? Should I try downloading directly from
site to the storage card on the M5000?
