Hi, Chris,

Do keep an eye on the new Dells that are coming out later this year.  Pretty much the same size (8.9" screen) and starting, supposedly, startig at 299 USD.  That bottom-line price is for Linux and 1/2 gb of RAM, so XP users should expect to use more.  And of course what these companies say they're going to charge and what the customer actually pay are always two different things (wasn't the original ASUS supposed to be "the hundred dollar
laptop?).  HP SAID their HP 2133 would start at 499 USD, but real-life price is now 789 USD.  But any Dell entry is sure to rock the market for the waiting consumer in positive ways.

I bought an ASUS 900 two weeks ago and am not sorry.  I could've waited more (and I did wait some--I didn't want the original 7' screen), but there'll always be something better down the line so the real question is what does the present hold for us?  I could go on about the 900's virtues, but a fast XP boot and quality-sized screen lead the accolades.

ASUS, HP, and all the other players in the mini-notebook party owe everything to Psion (and to Windows CE, somewhat).  It turned out that users were willing to use the miniture hardware format after all; they just wanted to do so with their desktop software.  That, and neither Epoc nor CE could provide real-life Internet experience.  But this wave of sudden portability is because every designer has a Psion in the deskdrawer, I'm sure of it.

This is a site that has suggestions for prepaid wireless access abroad:

http://prepaid-wireless-internet-access.wetpaint.com/?t=anon

It is aimed principally at people with 3G modems in/with their laptops but the info applies equally to phones.

(It is years since I contributed to this digest, mainly as I use my laptop more than my smartphone, but I so like the "atmosphere" of this digest that I have never left and continue to read it!)

Re.: Nokia E90 - Thanks for the message but the E90 is not for me either. As you will have read I changed provider and got a new phone free of charge. I am very satisfied at the moment.

Re.: TomTom RoutePlanner, v3.0 - Another solution of course is to reinstall from the original CD. If anyone needs it, I still have the original CD's.

Re.: No system screen in NetBook - Maybe a silly question but did you try a soft reset ? If that does not work, do you have a proper back-up and the OS.IMG file to do a hard reset ?

Best regards,

Itamar

Re.: Cheap mobile surfing from Orange - These prices are ok for occasional use but if you need to use it more regularly it will quickly add up to a considerable amount per month. I would buy a separate modem  and almost unlimited usage for 15 pounds per month separately from my mobile phone if I would need this.

Re. Iphone 2 - The specs for the second generation iPhone look very interesting. It is more geared to business users and considerably cheaper. I think it has got business programs as well. However, as long as there is no possibillity to use an external keyboard for more easy typing it will not replace a Psion or keyboard phones. Any opinions ?

Best regards,

Itamar

More and more manufacturers are jumping onto the bandwagon and coming out with their versions of sub-notebooks.

Acer is the latest with a very attractive device running on either Linux or Windows XP.

If I remember right, HP also announced one recently.

Their specs are leaving the Aus EeePC behind.
