Greetings!

I bought mine online directly from Hong Kong:

Still more than the 13" laptop I'm sitting with just now...
And the Alpha-400 is just 700grams... (just about the weight of 2 S5's, or half the weight of the HP 2133 ;-)

The FBReader included on the Alpha-400 is supposed to handle MobiPocket files.
See www.fbreader.org
There may be a version that can be installed on the Eee, too.
More about the Alpha-400:
It will accept USB mice, which is nice...
It also has a button with pictures that is usually used for switching between internal and external screens, but...
Pressing the button is a REALLY bad idea as it blacks out and becomes unresponsive...
It will not recognise my 1GB Kingston Traveller USB memory-stick, but the 128MB one works fine. 1GB CF-cards in an external reader also works fine.
The Calendar:
Unfortunately, does not have a 'to do' list.
Battery seems to last 2.5Hours when surfing 'aggressively'... (Will not play YouTube videos directly, though. Thank goodness for FF Add-ons... )
No automatic powersave...
There was about 650MB free of the 1GB FLASH disk when I started using it... (See YouTube comment)
This means they stuffed everything into approx 350MB. Nice. ;-)
Downloaded a large PDF from
www.parallax.com/propeller/
PDFViewer is slow to draw some pages, but much faster and more accurate
than the Viewer I've been using on my netBook.
Slowness may be partially attributed to the fact that file is 4.7MB and
over 400 pages... (With some graphics)
There's a System Restore function(Press F3 during boot), but the 'restore image' was not included in the box.
Also, the image on the box doesn't match the look of the machine. (Picture is without touchpad, among other things)
:-)

Hi Ray,
Having just bought an E90 I agree with your first impressions but I don't yet know enough about it to attempt to answer your questions directly. However, the thread at http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33530may go a little way to doing so. The thread is nearly a year old but there may be later ones at the same site.
