The problem is one of interrupted data flow (i.e. sometimes it just stops mid flow and the modem hangs, sometimes I get no reaction from it whilst trying to connect to my ISP). Interestingly though, just like you I can quite often get a connection on the SECOND attempt, then it works fine for various periods of time. I've checked and rechecked my modem settings (simple enough), ran it from a mains adaptor, used it with two seperate Psions, installed then uninstalled the mobile connectivity update etc. In other words, I've tried everything. I still find it worrying that Palmtop Magazine quite some time ago reported on many of the early Travel Modems suffering reliability problems. Bet mine is one of those!

It's a shame the current O/S doesn't support Bluetooth as if it did, it would then surely be a simple matter (I assume) to plug in a Bluetooth CF card to your netBook and allow you to communicate with your 6310 in this way. My experience with IR is that it's more convenient than cables but getting that continuous line of sight is a pain on a wobbly train or whilst being anywhere that lacks a stable flat surface. If you know of a way I can get this new emerging technology onto my S7 I'm all ears :-)

There is a Thai capable wordprocessor called ThaiWriter do a search on Google with "Psion Thai" and you will find it.
I have only ever played with the demo version which puts up a little keyboard on the screen and you enter characters through tapping on the character with the pen. I can't comment much more as the demo is heavily disabled (after you have entered two characters it starts to block out areas of the keybaord and does so for subsequent charcters till you can see nothing) so you can't evaluate it much and the full version costs 50 US dollars which as I live in Thailand on a teacher's salary is a bit expensive for something that I can't check out well.
Having said that I am thinking of saving for a 5mx to replace my 5 year old 5. Anybody know what prices (and where) they go for in the UK now?

Hi,
My old 5mx has suddenly stopping responding to the touch screen. Everything else works OK. Have just backed it up. Have tried a soft reset with no change. I have macro5, which means I can continue fairly well without the touchy bit, but any suggestions of what to do/what is wrong welcome.
Also does anyone have a macro that macro5 can run to automattically start applications. If so, please e-mail me the text, so I can use it to restart things like locker which don't get restarted after a backup.
Somehow I feel another machine off to POS - I just hope it is not a sign of a more serious problem soon.

Hi Jan,
I have been using the same hardware setup (MC 218+T 39) for some time, before MC 218 decided to give up, by way of a screen cable failure. (I live in Sri Lanka, and I had to send it to Singapore for repairs.). As a result, my T 39 is all alone now.
While I had the MC 218 with me, I too did the transfer of single data and contacts items between the two machines. SInce this was a
cumbersome process, I limited it to most important appointments, so that I did not miss those at the least. I longed for direct synchronization,
but that did not work. Since I do not have the serial cable for T 39, synching it with Outlook was not possible either. Just as you are, I am interested in software capable of direct synching between the two, using IR ports. I sincerely hope someone will come up with a solution, but given the bleak future of Psions (and Ericssons MC 218's that go with them),
one cannot be too optimistic.
Incidentally, I have not been able to do faxing with the same hardware. T 39 starts, but drops the line in a few seconds. I have been advised that there is a software update on the phone to cure this, but the support
in Sri Lanka is too poor to address such finer points.

I have some friends in Japan who email me regularly, and in Outlook I can read and write the Japanese characters, thanks to the IME from Microsoft. Whenever I have attempted to download these to my handheld, it always comes up 'bad header' and the email cannot be read. Is there a workaround this? I know I can't install extra fonts (what were they playing at?) and I have tried searches to get software to cope with this, but to no avail. I had heard of localising the MC218, but am I right in understanding that this is for European countries?
I am planning a trip to Japan next year, so maybe I might try and find a Japanese Psion....

I agree with Peter Keene's observations about the increasing interest in keyboards of various kinds as add ons or built-in features of PDAs. My feeling recently has been that it's only a matter of time before mainstream PDA manufacturers apart from HP start to offer PDAs with keyboards again.
I suspect the Zaurus 5500 solution to the keyboard issue is the one that will become the norm.
As he says, in several cases, the new keyboards we're seeing are "thumbboards" but I think this may actually be a good thing too. I may be unique in this opinion, but I found the Psion 5/5mx keyboard LESS usable than the old 3 series Psions' because it's more difficult to type on when standing up - i.e. supporting the machine with the fingers of both hands and typing with the thumbs. This is because, being larger, it was sometimes difficult to reach all the keys and because some of the key combinations are very difficult to achieve at all (for some reason Ctrl and Shift are difficult to hold down reliably with one thumb). If it hadn't been for Macro 5, I'd have had serious usability issues with the 5/5mx.
I refuse to get excited at the prospect of Psion resuming manufacture of the 5mx because I don't believe it will happen. However, if they could do a colour TFT version that somehow avoided the power problems that would entail, it would still knock spots off the rest.

Does anyone know whether Bluetooth can be used with a Psion? (I seem to remember someone asking this question previously but don't remember the response). There are now Bluetooth PC Card and CF adaptors available from people like Expansys.com (although the CF Card wouldn't fit in a 5mx without modifying the microswitch that tells the Psion that the CF 'door' has been closed). Could the Psion be made to recognise a Bluetooth card - and could it then connect with a Bluetooth-equipped PC or mobile phone?
My instinct says "no" - there's nothing to be found at www.bluetooth.com, and Psion's decision to cancel their Bluetooth PDA project wasn't a good omen...

......Drive not Found. You hear it spin up momentarily and then it clicks and nothing happens. I have tried it with the power plugged in just in case it made a difference, but it didn't. When I put it in the card slot on the side of my laptop it spots it straights away and checking the properties confirms that it is formatted FAT. I get the feeling that this is a driver issue somehow, but I am not sure.

I tried to synchronise my Revo with MSOutlook and this corrupted my Revo Contact file. When I opened it, it looked completely blank but some of the data was still there because searches returned results.
Fortunately I had backed up before synchronising so I could restore Contacts. The Contact file corrupted in my Revo was considerably smaller than the back up.
I do not know if it is a known bug, as I do not come to this forum regularly anymore but I thought that it could be of interest to indicate this here. I run Windows XP Professional, Outlook 2002 and PsiWin 2.3.1.

John asked about my 6310. I still haven't got one having not made a firm decision about what phone / provider to go with. The thought of Bluetooth still excites! But that there was some Bluetooth accessory for the netBook!
My dumping of Orange is intended as a slap on the legs for them. I don't spend a fortune (500 ukp so far this year), but I want to get the point across to them that I am unhappy about things. Their Equity (a points scheme) falls over when you upgrade your handset, and then is impossible to resolve afterwards. There are also too many spam text messages arriving at my phone.
I could get a company phone, probably a 3310 or similar toy, which saves the hassle of claiming through expenses with the inevitable delay before you can submit it and delay before you get reimbursed. Of course I will have that dubious advantage of being able to get fascias to match my mood - generally black!! When the company want something from my netBook though, they will have to wait until I land at an office and then I will have to carry my Pegasus 3 modem with me. Ho hum!
For Itamar. Calls to 0800 numbers are free with Orange. This was one of the things that impressed me. A contract includes inclusive minutes. Calls to landlines and Orange mobiles are included in those minutes on my contract. I believe that only Orange offers HSCSD and it is nice to have the extra speed when surfing. The cost is a little horrendous so I tend not to use it. As I said earlier, calls to Orange are free and with the exception of being unable to sort out my Equity points it has been a good experience. This is despite 4 failed T28s and 2 failed 6210's. Not Orange's fault of course.

EpocSync is a wonderful program, but if you are interested in a quick tip, just make yourself a nullmodem adaptor and sync by serial. It is a lot easier to see what is going on. Get the parts from www.netshop.co.uk

Firstly a big thank you to the guys running this digest.
Just a few questions I hope some can answer for me.
I have an Ericsson MC218 with the screen cable symptom, so I treated myself to a new 5mx thinking they were the same (not)
The MC218 came with a wap browser that I used a lot, can not find a version for the 5mx. If I install the browser from the Ericsson CD it fails to open on the 5mx.
The Internet browser on the MC218 was far better than on the 5mx.
Have taken the MC218 apart and I have also bought a 5mx 2nd hand with screen cable symptom, taken that apart also, but they are completely different inside..
Have seen a cable for sale on www.Psion-shop.de at €65 about £45 is the cable for 5mx & Ericsson 218 the same ?
POS do not service the MC218 which is very unfortunate.
Also I use data on the 5mx more than any other function with a fault database. have been given a Sony Clie from work to use is there anyway to import data from psion to palm it does not seem to have a built in data application.

I had tried this with my Series 7 with no joy and was hoping the xtra power on the netBook's motherboard would make all the difference.Just back off tour so I took my newly acquired netBook down to Morgans in London today and was disappointed to find same thing as Andy - "Disk not present" : (
It's not meant to require drivers so must be a power limitation I guess.
Owen asked about his 13 Gig external PCMCIA harddrive and iSpeed 24x PCMCIA CD-rom. As I understand it these do require drivers so will not work with the 7/netBook.
Looks like I'm still saving up for that Microdrive!

From memory, you will need to connect (physically) the Mac to the Psion. You can do this via the Apple Serial Port.
You will also need software, and I think you will need MacConnect - which will let you get the two talking together.

Not afaik. But you can surf w the Mac and download that data to the Psion with a CF.
There are lots of CF-readers out there for the Mac, the problem will be that most are USB nowdays. You will need a USB-card for your Mac - or a serial reader.

As soon as one copies system-data from the Psion on CF then to the Mac, the CF gets corrupted (docs get garbage names) and the Finder Data-base as well: you have to reformat the CF and what gets copied (if anything) is unusable. I do not know why. Seems to be sth with I dunno which bit in the header of I dunnowhat: no idea. Would love to find out.
Non-system data are okay. I use CF cards to transfer/install .sys, and to store backups (NOT on the Mac). Note that the Mac Finder puts some visible and invisible folders and docs on your CF. (Finder Database, finder.frk
etc.): do NOT touch it, or you'll have to reformat the card (it can be done both on the Mac (dos-format) and on the Psion - an occasionally you'll have to try both several times before it works (it does in the end).

The PocketPC Jornadas will be ditched in favor of the iPaQ but the 7*0 series will be continued and developed further ,the next revisions will be able to run the same OE'S as the iPaq i.e Merlin/Talisker/Familiar/Intimate/Opie
The separate OE's for the keyboarded devices wiil be ditched in favor for full cross-compatibility

you are out of luck here because Mac Classic ( MacOS < 9.2.2 ) is a completely diferrent beast ( i.e proprietary ) from modern Mac ( MacOS > 9.2.2 ) wich is based on the same foundations as WindowsNT and *BSD Unices
You will also need a *nix ( including MacOS X) OR 'doze box and a network if you want to do what you described

Yes I found one here at the university , took it home hooked up power and a SHARP Zaurus Classic ( using a Socket LP I/O card to simulate the Psion serial portand a db9->db25 adapter taken from a tangle of discarded leads destined for the landfill ) fired it up and it worked like a champ
These models use a build-in mini-inverter ( like the far more expensive Courier model , allowing them to run from one of these lightweight - high-efficiency switched-mode mains adapters ( s7/netbook users can use the same adapter as for theirs truly , but may needto splice the lead as the barrel plug is different (i.e. larger , 5.5 mm OD ,2.1 ID ) s3/s5/mc218/revo users have to get a 12/15 Volt one The nice thing is that you no longer have to sacrifice the s7/netbook pcmcia slot and strain the power supply with a PCCard modem , not to mention the cost savings ( I have now running such a setup using a USR Courier for several hours in a small test rig to avoid high telephone bills and my zaurus is still cold to the touch )

PCCard modems are great performers but ..
1 the really good ones suck the hell out of the batteries of your palmtop
2 As laptops often come with build-in modems the market and hence supplies are drying up ( currently only Option , TDK-Greycell and Intertex are guaranteeing continuing availability )
3 None of the recent cool offerings now come with a PCMCIA slot or accept a PCMCIA sleeve
4 Psions - the 3c as well as all the RISC-based models -i.e s3mx/s5/mc218/s7/netbook have a real RS-232 capable of at least 57.600 kbps
So here a good external modem can be an excellent investment and after doing some surfing on USRobotics Website I decided to purchase the Courier V-Everything 56k Corporate External Modem
Called Frits ( Nieuwenhuis ) who has an account on reseller Ingram Micro and two days later it arrived from Ingram Micro's UK warehouse , but the mail service failed to leave a notice that it had arrived so I had to place some calls to trace its whereabouts
So off I went to the Post Office and picked it up , coming home , unpacked it , fired it up and cooked up a script to log into the Unix shell of our university system
After some tweaks it worked like a charm , I succeeded to surf the web using lynx at 4800bps and checking mail and up/downloading attachments in Pine also worked grandiose
What's in the box :
Supplied with the modem and its associated mains adapter are a cdrom with manuals and software as well as adapter leads for UK phone and mains sockets
For those courageous enough to take the plunge , this thing is **vast** but this means also that you have a real speaker and there's even a mini-BBS with the complete command set as well as all S-registers explained ( wich means you can save a lot on paperwork ) and s7/netbook users need to carry only one mains brick , it takes from 12 to 20 volts DC power
Setting up is simple , you only have to create the correct scripts for the various connections (Mike , are you reading ?)
Apropos scripting : As with all external modems , you need full scripting wich includes the initialisation and dialling commands to get reliable and reproducible connections
