Hi All
Well, it finally happened, my wife's poor old trusty 5mx has been back to the repairers for the fourth time. First it was the screen not working, then it was the data getting corrupted..then..then
We love the 5 and 5MX, they've both been worthy friends for as long as I can remember, but both the 5 and the 5MX are slowly dying :(((
We therefore took the painful decision to look for a similar model by another manufacturer and the deal and jungle.com for a Jornada 250 pounds was too tempting.
Now the tricky bit! Does anyone know of a way to get the contacts and diary data off of the Psion in a format that the Jornada can read.
I've scoured the Internet, but haven't found much.

Hi Keith,
>I've lost the Add/Remove icon in my 5ive Control Panel (installing AlarmPlus seems to have done it).
in ER5 (5mx, netBook, Revo) the Control Panel is a scrollable pane. If
the number of icons is to big to fit in the panel area, you can move
the contents left or right. Since Alrm+ adds an icon to Control Panel
you may have exausted the available space. If the panel area can't be
scrolled on a 5ive you might have a problem.
The module itself can be found in ?:\System\controls on any drive. If
something like InstCtrl.* is still there, only the icon is hidden. Does
uninstalling Alarm+ bring it back? Can you install software by clicking
on a *.sis file?
I just read you second posting, that you got back Add/Remove and lost
Alarm+ instead. I think, my suggestions are quite correct because you
changed the order of loading the CP modules.

Hi Kevin,
There are variants of the JPEG format which became popular with digital photography: In the new (Exif) variant, the JPEG encoded data is part of a TIFF file which allows for storing meta data such as exposure details or focus width alongside the pixels.
It's a matter of implementation of JPEG whether the new format is accepted or not by your software. On my PC I have a program (IMPOS2 for OS/2) that can't handle it and I have to convert the pictures from my camera using a different tool.
You can tell the difference in file formats by looking at the files with a HEX editor or viewer. Old style JPEG files start with "JFIF" while newer files have a "Exif II" signature near the beginning of the file.
Opera (and possibly Web) should be able to view both formats. With MBMView I'just tried and it works on a picture from my camera.

Thanks for your advice on this, Rolf. Any Netherlands based O2 GPRS users out there? Is GPRS working for you and if so what APN are you using? I find it hard to believe that O2 would allow their entire GPRS system in Holland to be down for so long... or maybe its just down for roamers...
By the way, does anyone have any views as to whether Bluetooth will replace IR? If mobiles switched to Bluetooth only that would spell the end of 5mx useability. Other than that slight concern, armed with my spare machine, I think I will be happily using my Psion (and POS :-( ) for the next 4-5 years.

Subject: Itamar's 7 / Tablet PCs / Siemens S45 / Mains adaptors / Error in my last Post
Hi All
Welcome to the big boys playground Itamar! Nice to see that you have joined us netBook/7 owners. You must get a copy of EpocSync on each device and a null modem adaptor (or a mirror) to sync certain files on each of the devices for when you decide you want EPOC, but don't want to carry a large device. Have you decided on a case yet? I use an aluminium briefcase from PC World, although I believe that Clove started to sell them for almost half of what I paid for mine. Another alternative might be the Palm-Tec case, a semi-rigid case that will be smaller and lighter than mine.
Being office based, you may be one of the few people who the docking station works for. They are extremely expensive though for what they are. Extrabars is still a worthwhile investment for this machine if you have a lot of apps installed. It works well on this size of screen, my only complaint being that the splash screen was never increased in size to fill the space and the "Hide on real Extras bar" function rarely seems to work. No More would be a good idea to run in conjunction with Extrabars, but I have had problems with a file in NoMore corrupting itself and stopping me reading the D: drive.
Does anyone know of an alternative to NoMore - the icon hiding application?
For those interested in small form factor PCs, I used a tablet PC in the "Orange Home" this year. It was about the size of a small UK telephone directory (A4?). It ran Wince v3 with a WLAN. It was basically a huge Pocket PC. A docking station took care of battery charging and software installation/updating. There was a soft keyboard built in which could be displayed on the screen.
There is a really good user forum on www.zenobyte.com (the authors of Phoneman) which is worthwhile joining to find out about Phoneman's functionality with any particular phone. The administrators of the list respond very quickly to questions.
The mains adaptor for the 5mx also works with the Revo. It plugs in nicely into the serial lead from the docking station. I also bought a separate charger for the Revo which has a straight connector instead of the right angled connector of the Psion psu. The straight adaptor plugs into the Revo much easier if you are not carrying the docking station with you whilst travelling.
I said in my last ramble about Wince "Whereas with EPOC, there is the option to copy SIS files to the device and install from there, you don't have this option and you are tied to a laptop to install apps". What I actually meant was that you have to have ActiveSync installed on a PC device to be able to install apps to the Jornada. It just so happens that my ActiveSync is installed on a laptop! You don't have to buy a laptop! I just know that someone with too much time on their hands is going to correct me on the point!

Answer to: Keith Giles
Re. Add/remove icon - In the file s5tips17.hlp is written the following: While connected to your PC via PsiWin (only tested on V2.1), right click 'My Psion' (or whatever you've renamed it since).
Select 'Install New Program'.
This will then let you install programs that come with an install script (*.SIS or *.CTL - see Tip 'Install Scripts' under category 1..15). Additionally, an 'Add/Remove' icon will be added to your Control Panel on your Psion allowing you to install or remove programs with ease.
Hope this will help you.

Rolf,
Thanks for the comprehensive description of relations between GSM & GPRS. However, I have to disagree partly when you state that "this is the way it works". From lengthy discussions with Vodafone here in Sweden I've learned that
1. the operators can increase the capacity in the cells (how this is done I don't know)
2. they apply different rules for outgoing / incoming information (mostly they only give you more than one timeslot for outgoing data).
3. they apply a prioritisation of GSM over GPRS which has the effect I described earlier - even in the middle of a data transfer by GPRS, the rule can completely stop the GPRS transfer - I don't get even one single timeslot! (Yes, just as you stated Arent K, ***ZERO***, and this is what angers me the most because they don't mention anything of this in their ads for this "superb fast service"!)
4. they admit that the in certain cells where they have noticed a high rate of GPRS comm, they have "reserved" cell space for this type use of the GSM net - so this can be done and its obviously not necessary to apply a "natural distribution" of capacity with absolute priority for GSM over GPRS.
Still eager to hear from other GPRS users if you share my problems or not.
Cheers,
Jan G

Hi Itamar,
The current prices of the s7 make it better value IMHO, if you need ethernet its not a goer however it works well with a number of 56K PCMCIA modems and no difference with a mobile phone as this will be GSM, GPRS etc via IR. I have a netbook (purchased soon after release when the price difference was not so large) but have used a s7 and dont really in everyday use see the speed difference. As for ROM upgrades this has only happened a few times in the machines history and the last UK update has been reported as "a bit buggy" so for the price difference Im not convinced of the benifit.
I do use my netbook with a Psion Gold ethernet card and it works well (at work) Im about to have NTL broadband installed at home so I will be able to use that connection as well, ive got a router so ill be able to share it with my wife so im going to get some extra out of the netBook. But as I said I got it when the price difference with the s7 was much smaller. If I was buying now I would pick a bargin s7.
all the best,

Hi Guys,
For Itamar re netBook os:
Congratulations on your new S7 Itamar. I knew that if we kept chipping away at it, your resolve would crumble. Just a point about the netBook os - upgrading it doesn't make it incompatible with the S5mx. It's still ER5, it just has a few extra bells and whistles. Maybe you should order one of those netBook ROMs from Dave at Psionet.

>>Arent, interesting to hear that modems with cables can also drop the connection. Is this really the modem in your opinion or the internet provider? With mine it is nearly always the connection computer <=> modem which drops. <<
Yes that's also my experience
I did some tests with x-modem filetransfers and discovered that starting an application on either side caused the x-modem transfer to crap out
When connected to an Internet provider ,dropped connections are very rare if the modem is of good quality and properly set up , only severe line disturbances cause the modems to disconnect

This is indeed the case ,the 5mx has all but disappeared from the shops here ,Pocketpc is now king and alternative operating environments e.g linux , QNX , Inferno and SavajeOS cater for the niches that require something different
The final nail in the coffin of the"pure" PDA platforms will be Palm's porting of its operating system to the Pocketpc hardware platform Asustek plans to enter this market with a X-Scale-based device running PalmOS 5.*.*
>>Kijkshop (www.kijkshop.nl) and Dixons (www.dixons.nl) do have engaged in several stunts with the Osaris. The 16Mo UK version is now available for 139,95 euros, but I have also heared that Kijkshop actually has the 8 Mo version, so watch out for that!<<
The French 8Mo AZERTY version is available at www.rueducommerce.fr for EUR 92,95 , but that really says 'destockage', so they're the last.<<
Mine is an 8MOct UK English one purchased from kijkshop for eur 99 , a far cry from the nlg 1399 of two years ago throug specialist resellers

The keyboard is -at least on the latest builds -brilliant ,I too have tested the 9210 and found the keyboard very aceptable ,what killed the deal here is that there,s no touchscreen wich pretty much eviscerates the Jotter application (no free-hand drawing unless you hook it up to a laptop or desktop pc ) Better buy it now , you can use it to gether with a 5mx or revo ,I use it now succesfully with a hp680lx windowsce handheld

Ultraporable pc's are a concept whose time to enter mainstream markets now has come , finally a "glass ceiling" has been broken and very small form-factor pc systems with the same performance as a regular ( but still fairly low-end )desktop or laptop are making their debut
Again , convenience rather than quality is the drive behind this initiative , convenience because this can be build now from stock components and it runs regular desktop/server-type operating ystems and software , the cost of wich -not just in money , but also in terms of development man-hours has already been written off
Ultraportables are also fairly immune from the effects of bloatware and sloppy coding practices wich can kill even the most powerful pda platforms

You are absolutely right here ,only these two have the real clout to push ahead with full implementations of EPOC 32
Interesting detail :both the Nokia 7650 as well as Sony-Ericsson's P800 are based on the same hardware as the Microsoft Stinger platform Indeed the future of EPOC32 is brighter than ever , but with the exception of the two smartphones from Nokia and Ericsson the average buyer will be completely unaware of it

Only the devices that Psion brought in use the EPOC operating system and of these only the netBook ,and the netPad use the 32-bit variety on wich the Symbian OS is based
The reason are mangfold ,EPOCnever gained much traction in North-America , Teklogix faces competition in its domestic markets from DAP Technologies and in the broader North-American market from Symbol Technologies ,Intermec ,and then there's the issue that they have to licence both from MicroSoft and Symbian as ER 3,4,and 5 contain substantial amounts of MicroSoft IP in both the operating system itself ( use of MicroSoft file formats for executables and libraries ) as well as in the GUI and in the SDK
So it is likely that they too will only use the kernel and wireless stacks (Bluetooth ,gsm/gprs evt umts/cdma) and run either Java applications (EPOC32 can run a full J2ME/J2SE/J2EE environment ) alternatively WindowsCE or Palm applications in an emulation environment

I have since 1999 a jornada 680 and have managed to install all applications I needed directly from the Net or through a "non-partnered pc" or server
Generally I use staged downloads to save both time and telephone charges i.e from work I telnet into either the local SunOS box or into my shell account , using lynx or netscape I make a disk dump in my homedirectory , run unzip over the download to check if it is not a "real" executable (wich requires a desktop/laptop with Activesync running to install )
After expanding the archives I use either FTP to copy the .cab file relevant for my device to my 680 where I can install it either in RAM or on a flash card
In reality it is up to the device manufacturer and software developer to support direct installs from the network or interchangeable storage media
My 680 is stand-alone ( i.e many applications/drivers can be installed onto it from any PC ( I even used a lowly HP200LX in the beginnning to prime the thing )
HP did gone to great lenghts to make direct-to-handheld installs possible
>>OK, what about getting files onto the Jornada? I am afraid that you need a PC again. Or at least you do in certain cases. With EPOC I tend to fire up the Comms app on the netBook and HyperTerminal on a PC and transfer the files that way. In the Terminal application on the Jornada there are a number of connection choices, of which serial is not one of them. This leaves you a number of choices, internal modem, external modem on com1, irda modem, ir on com4. If you have no ir port on the PC that has got the files on it you have two choices, FTP server or get hold of a Wince Terminal app. Must be a free terminal app about you might think. Wrong, or at least I haven't found one yet. Cheapest has been 20 quid, most expensive 40 quid. I have got one on a 30 day trial at the moment, but I will probably end up doing without the functionality as 95% of PCs at work are now networked and files can always be dragged from the network to my laptop PC and thence to the Jornada.<<
I have found one :EmuraTerm , this is japanese "nagware", found it by accident on vector.co.jp (one of the three major hangouts of the japanese developer community )
You need an Amiga unarchiver and a registry editor to install/configure it but if you have comleted that ,then Bob's your uncle ( have used it for more than two years first with my SHARP Classic Zauri , then with my recently purchased OsariS
Serial comms :
The Jornadas **do**support direct (both hardwired and virtual , using IR or modem pairs or a combination of the above )serial connections and I have run both rzsz and ppp successfuly over these links
Setting up a serial connection can however be tricky an may involve sacrificing syncing with your desktop/laptop ,also additional hardware investments in the form of pccard modems ,mini-pabx serial interface cards etc may be necessary
Setting up a serial link :
1 Open the comms app you want to use e.g remote networking , go to File|Properties|Dial-Up Connection, from the drop-down menu select the desired device/interface , Tap on configure , in the Device Properties screen tap Port Settings , tick on Manual Dial (User supplies dial strings ) and **both**Terminals
In Connection Preferences select Baud Rate =19200 ,Data Bits=8 ,stop bits=1 Parity=none , Flow control=Hardware,Software or None , depending on what's on the other side
In the Call Options tab settings can be left on their default
Save first the settings to the registry by clicking OK until completed
Close Remote networking as well as all other files and applications
Reboot
Inmediately after reboot( but affter it has completed the filesystem check ) save the new settings to flash using the build-in backup utility
>>The reason for buying this was to try to avoid carrying my laptop between offices all of the time. This way I can use Outloook as a tool to keep details of contacts, diary and tasks, syncing my Jornada when I get back to base. This beats carrying a laptop and a netBook. I have also found that it runs the Toshiba 2gb PC card hard drive that the netBook won't run.<
The *CE platform in general and not just the MicroSoft flavor of it depends on TCP/IP for comms and transferring anything but very short text files
Comms apps as found in Epoc 32 R3 to R5 are becoming more and more obsolete as more and more systems are going IP and are either removing protocoled file transfers to non-PC devices or removing direct terminal acces completely
How to connect :
Higlight the newly-configured connection either by tapping on it using the stylus or rhe arrow keys ,press Enter now opens a terminal window where you can type whatever commands to the other side to open your connection , if you want to use a modem first type in atx3dt<phone numberr>+ enter
The modem will dial the remote acces system and when the handshake is complete a connect prompt followed by a login prompt should appear
When you now press Alt+Enter your Jornada should complete the connection
The above procedure can be used to connect to anything that supports the proper protocols
>>Anyone using a 6310/6310i to connect to the net? What modem settings are you using? My 6210 settings are not working. It just disconnects as soon as it connects.<<

>>The Pegasus IR Modem sell at 99usd. The Pegasus3 uses nimh batteries so I assume that the IR model will do the same. Does the Psion IR modem run on batteries?<<
Yes
Today I had a chat over the phone with someone from Clove Technologies about the future of the Psion 5mx /netbook/netpad
First the 5mx : itis indeed true that production has started again but he also told me that the quantity is limited to 1000 pieces , Clove is trying to get their hands on as much as possible
After this batch it is finito/slut/over/einde/ende
s7/netbook : Will be kept in the program as long as there is demand .development however will be halted
Netpad :Will be developed further , it is based on the same core as current Pocketpc devices , it has the ability to run full JAVA applications
Despite the lack of a hardware keyboard this hould be worth an investigation as it could fulfill one's need for an epoc32-based device for many years to come
Pocketpc :
It appears that convenience triumphed over quality i.e shoehorning a generic desktop/server OS - such as WindowsNT or Linux - into a small handheld device is the way to go
And the whole industry -and this includes the likes of Compaq/HP , MicroSoft ,RedHat ,SHARP swallows this hook, line and sinker
And the unsuspecting consumers go for it in droves
But the grass-roots support for this thing blows evrything out of the water , even people from the vendors actively participate in the lists
About Osaris he did confirm that the early builds weren't as good as the last one currently on sale at Kijkshop and DIXON's in the Netherlands
mine was indeed of that latter , better build
Clove too confirmed that the earlier builds were of less quality than the last one wich probably was commissioned directly from the actual manufacturer
I am now on my fourth day with it and I love it ,this is what Wizard/Zaurus should have been , the multitasking OS is brilliant , while typing this I can exchange files with my HP680LX WinCE 2.11 using Datacomms and Emuraterm
