Yup, that's the one, I managed to find it via Tucows :)

Already paid 2,5x plus for repairs and spare machine.

One drop = 1/4 of the price, hm?

So: yes, I would.

Unfortunately this is a purely potential question.

Looking forward to machines with this form factor and Mac values ;-)

Subject: Plug in to Web

A few musings.  Many people I know who own Psions have often said how happy they are with their machines and how they have felt no need to go to a Windoze laptop to do whatever they want to do.  I feel that way too with my S7 - it does at least 90% of what I want a computer to do.  Of course, this leads to the question of what is it NOT capable of doing in the remaining 10% functionality that I ask of it.  Well, there are a few minor things (such as limited colour printing for example) but by far the biggest chunk of that remaining 10% "wish list" is the web browser.  I have to say firstly that I far prefer Psion's own built-in in browser "Web" to the Opera version for Symbian.  It's much more Psion-like in operation, very economical with memory and to me just looks nicer!  Unfortunately I'm forever hitting sites that don't allow me to access them because of no Javascript support, no SSL support, no certificate support, "your browser is not IE5, please download the latest version here!" etc etc.  As time goes by and Web gets more and more dated this happens more and more frequently.  Yet Web would support plug-ins to cover these limitations and to me it seems such a shame that none (as far as I know) were written.  I would have thought the demand for these would be fairly high, particularly for the larger screened colour Psions that purport to replace a laptop.  If indeed the demand is there, then why have we not enjoyed plug-ins to upgrade Web?  I for one would gladly pay a shareware author for it rather than have to resort to Opera.

Ah, the joys of learning about your new machine!  Simply press Ctrl whilst tapping any of the 4 icons (in any program) and you'll see them slide out from the left to reveal themselves without lauching the associated program.

Question to all:

Now that I use a Nokia 9210 to occasionally connect my S7 to the Internet instead of my previous phone the 8210 I find I can no longer successfully use the Email menu option "synchronise with phone" to transfer my SMS messages from the Nokia to the S7 - it just doesn't work.  Email, fax and web access works fine, but not SMS transfers between machines, although sending and receiving from the Nokia itself is fine.  On my 8210 I had no trouble transferring my SMS onto my S7.  Can anyone tell me why?

Dear Andy,

<< When the UK 3G networks are made available in the (supposedly) near future, will the 9210 be superseded or will it be able to have its hardware / firmware upgraded ? >>

The bad news first - The 9210 will have to be replaced as the 3rd generation networks will be based on WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access). A technology that's is radically different from the TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) technology that forms the basis of GSM.

The good news second - It will take some time before 3G networks become widely available. There's a bit of a slump in mobile telephony, to say it mildly, and the network operators have already paid high prices to get a 3G license. Most of the network operators have therefore postponed their 3G implementations as it means rolling out a completely new infrastructure. Increasing the revenue per customer is more important at this moment. Hence the interest in Multimedia Messageing (MMS), the successor to SMS. Current expectations are that the first networks will become available in Q1 2004, starting with the major cities. Though you can already use 3G on the Isle of Man, which is a kind of trial site.

<< I suppose that this is one of the major drawbacks of a combined Phone / PDA platform >>

Not really. The network operators can't afford moving their networks from 2.5G to 3G at the flick of a switch. They'd loose 99% of their existing customers. The old analog ETACS networks remained in operational for a few years in parallel to the (then new) GSM networks.

Sorry, but that's not the case. I have 99% of my applications, including RMRZip, RMRNews and RMRDRaw, installed on a CF card. I can plug the card into my Series 5, Series 5mx, MC218 and Series 7 without any problem. The only applications that complain about such a swap are TomTom's Route and Street Planner. Reason why I keep their SIS distribution files on the card for a quick reinstallation.

<< However they might insist you re-register and buy it again in order to use it on your Series 7 >>

Which isn't the case either as you only need to register once for all RMR applications.

That's to be expected as you're not "the other party" of my comment. Note that I mentioned there's nothing against the type of questions Itamar asked during the discussion. And I wouldn't have spent the time attempting to answer them had I be convinced it wouldn't serve any purpose. It's a bit discouraging, however, when your messages are replied to with a new set of questions.

<< Although you are also a "net contributor", I would have to add that I believe your own contributions to this Digest are sometimes quite aggressive in nature. Maybe that's the way it is in the land of Business Analysts in the PDA marketplace, but it's not the way we conduct ourselves here >>

Allow me to make it clear that (a) my job isn't that of a business analyst and (b) that I'm not working for a financial or investment company. The information I use for my messages comes from public sources like news services and company press offices. And you can subscribe to a number of these services by placing your e-mail address on their mailing list.

Secondly, the people from the area of the Netherlands where I was born and raised are known for their plain and direct manner of speaking. And that for a nation which already has a similar reputation. I'm well aware that this directness can be interpreted as being blunt, rude or aggressive. Problem is that knowing the effect it can have on others doesn't make it any easier to get the directness out of your system. Reason why I frequently revise, rephrase and rewrite my messages before they're posted. Still, this aspect of being a Drent is, and will remain, part of my personal make up, I'm afraid.

Subject: Few more S7 questions / Fax / Nokia IR port

For Itamar

"Is Opera webprogram still available for free, and if so from which website ?"

To download Opera 3.62 for free have to go to one of these sites (can't remember which!) and register (for free)

http://partners.psionteklogix.com/partners/

http://partners.psionteklogix.com/ptxcms/CORE.asp?s=com&p=PartnerProgram

"Another question, the S7 screen is very much purple/blue orentated. Is there a way to change the colours on the screen ?"

Color Magic $29.95 from http://www.epocware.com  lets you change the color of desktops, menus, dialogs, buttons and other screen elements on your Series 7 or netBook.

"What never happened on my 5MX, I got several times already a memory problem with the S7 telling me there is not enough memory to do something, specially with the MBMView program. Once I had to do a soft reset to regain some memory. Is this a known problem with the S7 ?"

Don't use MBMview but might be you have lots of images open at once? From System use Ctrl-J to see how many files are open. Image files take up a lot of memory. My biggest memory eater is Web. I regularly delete System/wtldata/cache after a session.

Also if you have a Logs folder the Email file can get huge if downloading large attachments. I removed mine as it slows down the download as well.

To free up memory without resetting try one of the many freeware apps. My favorite is Compact by Ralph Sprenger but you might also try Compactor, FreeMem or Defragment as well. CleanIt  or Atelier's Optimise are also useful. Should be able to find all these on Tucows.

Kevin Thorne wrote

"I was going to deliberately try an experiment to see just how long my S7 could retain data with a main battery depleted but after waiting around 5 days in this state I got fed up with waiting, plus I needed to use my machine!  So my guess is that when your main battery is so low that the machine won't turn on there is no need to panic for quite some time."

I left my 7 behind while backpacking round the world this spring and just took my MC218. On my return 3 months later the backup battery was dead and I somehow neglected to replace it. Then while working at a festival in a field somewhere I managed to run the main battery down so that it wouldn't turn on. On plugging it in the next day the machine had hard reset and wiped all the memory. Bugger. And my last backup was 3 weeks old. Bugger again. So while the main battery may be safely run down the backup battery is a different matter. I now carry 3 spares - just in case!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally given up on my Ericsson R520m - modem on all current Ericssons don't support Fax class 2/2.0 but can send via Fax class 1. However t-mobile mucked up my fax messaging service when they took over from one2one and it's taken them this long to reinstate it. But when finally go to download the fax that's been in my mailbox for months I get message saying I can only answer this call from external equipment eg a PC. Bugger. Suppose could buy the data cable for the phone and a null modem adaptor and carry all that plus the Psion data cable.... but suddenly my mobile doesn't look quite so mobile!

So gonna have to jump ship and get a Nokia as only viable alternative seems to be 6310i. VERY hard to verify if this actually does what my old SH888 did ( Fax class 2 and send/receive via IR ) as I'm not a club Nokia member and so they won't connect me to their data department. So wondered if anyone could confirm for me that this (or another ) handset actually will do what I want ie fax and data with my netBook. Doesn't seem too much to ask but these days phone manufacturers seem too concerned with ringtones, fascias and picture messaging instead of basic communication ability.

Alao be interested if any of our more technically minded members can explain difference between Fax Class 1, 2 and 3. All I know is Psions need Fax Class 2 over GSM.

As an aside I did elicit a fix for Nokia mobiles disabling the infra-red port after a couple of minutes of inactivity. I seem to remember complaints about this on the digest in the past. I was told that selecting to activate IR once gives you a flashing IR icon and the 2 minute cut off. But if you select it twice you get a static IR icon and no cut off. Be interested if anyone could confirm this. One good thing about the Ericsson is the IR port stays on until I turn it off!

The general rule is index.html as default file if it's a Unix/Linux based system and Default.htm if it's a M$ based server...

Please note that all 'nix systems are case sensitive.

(VERY important to remember when linking to other files)

It's also a very good idea to always have a file with the default filename in every folder.

Now, if anyone asks, 'why did they use a different name on the default file on M$ systems?' I'm afraid the only answer is 'they didn't make the standard, so decided to break it instead'...

I guess Telenor here in Norway also prioritises GSM Voice over GPRS because I couldn't get a GPRS connection, but had to resort to oldfashioned GSM Data for receiving the digest...

It has actually happened twice...

Sorry, but no...

There is some sort of program that gives you the possibility to customise the look of your S7/netBook, but when I tried it, it REALLY messed up my machine. (Can't remember the name of it)

> What never happened on my 5MX, I got several times already a memory

I've had similar happenings with MBMView. I think it's the way it reserves memory for the pictures.

A full screen memory map on a S7/netBook is going to be twice the size of one on a S5mx if they use the same number of colours.

Now, imagine, instead of using 16grays, you're messing with 256 colours...

Add the fact that a memory map can be bigger than the screen...

I always close down ALL other programs if I'm to view pictures with MBMView.

In regard to using a psion to read news downloaded from the Internet, go to www.mobipocket.com and donwload the newsreader for Psion, from there you will need a P.C. unfortunately. I have a laptop in the office that I use to download my news subscriptions and synch them with my psion. Not sure if there is any way to do this without using a P.C. See the website for more instructions. I work in media and graphic design but have a background in journalism and this is a lifesaver for me.

Also the mobireader can read .doc files that are for Palms in case you read a lot of ebooks as I do. It is also possible to create your own mobipocket files of articles and books of your own to read yourself or upload to the internet. I am an author so have done this too.

Re. Macro's - That's why I asked what the particular problem is. Most of the macros I "wrote" were actually first "recorded" and afterwards enhanced with some other functions I copied from other macros. I am not a programmer and can't write programs or full macros myself (either).

Answer to: Nicole Carbonara

Re. JWIN - I had a look at it some time ago, but found that most of the functions can be done with other programs free of charge, so did not see the reason to pay for it <G> [that is my Dutch background].

Re. S7 battery - Thanks for the answer (and others that replied). I'll take your experience(s) on board and leave it to charge several hours longer. Is there anyone who has it plugged in the whole day while at work ? The charger is getting very hot and I am not sure this is a healthy sign for leaving it on 8 hours or so.

Answer to: Kevin Thorne

Re. S7 battery - Thanks for the answer. The main problem with running the battery down totally is tha tit might pack up while you are away from the charger ... . I don't think I'll do that on a regular basis, but from time to time it will enhance battery life I suppose. And for traveling a spare battery might be a good option (but not a cheap one ...).

Answer to: Marcus von Cube

Re. Epocsync - I tried it last night and it kept on losing the connection. Now, this might have been due to the long process as it was the first time I synchronised the S7 and 5MX. I don't think I will use it too often as basically I use the S7 now and the 5MX very little. One of the main uses for the 5MX will be with the GPS in my car (the carstand for the S7 is outrageously expensive, almost half the price of the S7).

Answer to Itamar Engelsman

Hi Itamar,

> Is Opera webprogram still available for free, and if so from which website ? I am not sure I am interested, but if I could connect with it to my Barclays bank account it might be am idea. <

Yes it is, but no longer from the Psion partners web-site though (they always seem to remove everything). Visit the opera web-site www.opera.com - all the versions are downloadable from here.

> Another question, the S7 screen is very much purple/blue orentated. Is there a way to change the colours on the screen ? <

Sure, just open the Control panel and choose Screen. Decrease the contrast to a value which gives you perfect colours (mine is set to 18). If necessary, also adjust the brightness.

> I got several times already a memory problem with the S7 telling me there is not enough memory to do something, specially with the MBMView program. Once I had to do a soft reset to regain some memory. Is this a known problem with the S7 ? <

There's no memory problem on the S7 - at least not the way you might think. What you experience is that although your 5mx and S7 both have 16MB RAM as standard, the S7 runs out of memory long before the 5mx. The reason for this is that it uses much more RAM to run programs (sometimes more than twice the memory) due to the larger screen and colours. As a result of this it's recommendable to install the 16MB DIMM upgrade (then you'll probably never ever get another out of memory message).

When you close a program it'll free up some memory, but not 100%. On my S7 MBMView uses 1,1MB just to run. Loading an image takes another 3-400KB. When I close down MBMView it only frees up 600KB, which means the application is still holding 500KB of information in RAM. There are two ways to regain some memory: 1) a soft reset, which is the most efficient, or 2) a utility to free up the memory - I use Defragment from Daniel Sissman which does the job pretty good.

Sure - that's what I'd already described in a message prior to the one you responded to.

This is the fine-tuning I referred to. Trouble is that It's not without its disadvantages. It allows for rapid swings in the bandwidth a GPRS user has available, for example. It's what Jan describes - the bytes suddenly start to crawl over the network to the effect that the mail server times out. Splitting up cells tends to be the better solution as the statistics of time slot allocation will be more favourable. Which also has a disadvantage - costs.

Subject: Re: Charging the Series 7's batteries

Dear Itamar,

<< Re. S7 battery - Several people now told me to leave the charger on for 1 or even 3 hours. However, the Merlin battery checker gives the voltage and after less than an hour of charging already shows 12.6V. So, who is right ? >>

Both are right. Batteries are based on two electrochemical reactions - one that supplies electrons and one that consumes electrons:

     A + B = AB + n electrons

     P + Q + m electrons = PQ

Normal state is for the two reaction to be in a stable balance - the one that belongs to depleted batteries. Charging artificially pushes the balance to the right hand side of the equations. The side in which you have the chemical components A, B, P and Q. Use the Series 7 and you close a conductive circuit so that the electrons can flow and the chemicals AB and PQ are formed.

Merlin showing that the battery is already at 12.6V in less that an hour will be correct. However, the concentrations of A, B, P and Q won't be sufficient to get a stable 12.6V. The reactions want to achieve their balance again. Some of the A, B, P and Q that have just been formed will thus react back to the chemicals AB and PQ the moment you disconnect the charger. This effect is strengthened by the heating up of the battery as a result of the charging. What's needed is to continue charging until you have such an excess of components A, B, P and Q that the 12.6V is stable, even under the load of having to power the Series 7, and will degrade slowly during use.

The above is the reason why batteries tend to be charged best by high-current till 95% of capacity and by trickle currrent for the remaining 5%. You push hard to get the reactions to the left hand side of the equation, accepting the disadvantage of the battery heating up. Trickle current then allows the battery to cool down in a controlled fashion, while keeping a steady push.

Subject: Re: Psion Group

Dear Itamar,

<< Re. Psion - Even if it has been a Holding Company for a long time, it held it's own sub-divisions by itself geared to Psion products. Today that is not the case >>

From an emotional perspective - Yes. Our bond with Psion stems from the Series 3, Revo and Series 5 we own. The image of Psion we have in our minds is largely based on these products. The 'other' Psion, of the Workabout and HC, would have remained obscure when it hadn't come with the netBook. But it remains 'that other bit' to many of us because it's activities are out of our sights.

Nevertheless, a Workabout or netPad is still a Psion product. And the acquisition of Teklogix has turned its products into Psion products as well. Though it's understandable that a 7035 Handheld Terminal is seen as some kind of alien invader. I trust many a Psion owner of old didn't have much affinity with Dacom's modems when Psion bought the company and formed Psion-Dacom. Which changed with the years and the introduction of new Psion-Dacom products. To the effect that many people talk about their Psion Gold Card, forgetting the Dacom part of the brand.

And when we cast our minds further back we come to a time when Psion didn't make handheld computers nor modems. Psion developed software for the Sinclair ZX80 and ZX Spectrum personal computers. The founding of the new Psion Software effectively means Psion going back to its roots. Though the target has changed from personal computers to smartphones and communicators. This Psion is still invisible to us because the division hasn't launched its first software products yet.

<< Why buy the Company ?  To increase one's share and to gain control of the Symbian technology and platform >>

The aim is clear but the question remains. Why buy Psion Group when you can make a bid for it's stake in Symbian? Buy the company and you take over all of its assets and liabilities. Psion-Teklogix won't be much of an asset to Nokia, for example. It also means taking over the obligations Psion Group has towards the users of its handheld computers and modems. The costs of these obligations effectively increase the purchase price.

Dear Digestives

Firstly a big THANK-YOU to a couple of you who helped me with a CF card

capacity problem - a swift blast with Atelier's wonderful formating program

and my full 128mb disk becomes 53.7mb available! Incredible. thankyouthankyou

Can I just chime in with my total support for DATA as the best application.

It is brilliant; clear, simple, totally searchable, fast. It really pissed

me off when Ericsson took the shortcut off the mc218 screen (yeah, I'll get

round to reconfiguring the silk screen keys one day). I only wish I could

search two or three data files at the same time for a key word, without

going through the whole memory. I also really like EXTRABARS - lots of

shortcuts, nice robust software.

I've had good fun with a new palmtop gps (the magnet on the roof jobby).

Drove my wife mad giving her completely obvious directions for the hell of

it. I found that the speed readings for cars are 3 or 4mph below the speedo

- is that because car manufacturers err on the side of caution?

I've got a 5mx winging its way to me with a broken screen (one crack, touch

sensitive screen still working, looks like just the 'outer' glass has

cracked without messing up lcd). Does anyone know if I can put a new bit of

glass in from an old series 5 classic, if I detach the smaller bit of the

ribbon cable carefully?

PS A few days ago someone sang the praises of Money for keeping track of

personal finances etc. I've got some brand new unused, boxed, original

copies of Palmtop/Tom Tom's Money for sale: £45 from them, just £15 from me

(plus postage). Email me if you want one. Lovely chuvley ;-)

PPS I've also seen a Mulberry case for a psion advertised which says it

cost £200 new! Is it made of gold? has anyone actually got one these? are

they wonderful???

It happens with  both my 5MX and my S7. What can be the reason for this ?

Subject: Palmtop Magazine

Another symbol of the Psion era has disappeared. This morning I received the usual bi-monthly brown envelope. Hi, I thought, my usual Palmtop Magazine has arrived. Upon opening the envelope I find issue no. 1 of Palmtop User, a magazine for all palmtop platforms, with a combined contents for epoc, palm and pocketpc users. But of course, with the demise of the Psion platform, the Epoc contents was rather limited. What irritates me is that they made the transfer without any advance warning or possibillity for a refund. I subscribed to a magazine about Psion/ Epoc machines, not about palm and pocketpc ones.   I might decide to continue reading it, but that should really be my choice and not theirs.

Soon this digest will be the last source for Epoc information.

Subject: FTP and HTML

Andrew, Kevin and Simon,

Thank you guys, for the advice regarding FTP and HTML.  I downloaded RMRFtp and it works a treat.  I haven't uploaded anything yet but was able to access my website and view my files much the same as I do with Bluezone FTP on my Dell.

I also downloaded the Neuon and Symbian text converters. They are too darned big for simply generating HTML. Up to now I've been generating HTML via Word and have been simplifying it after generation by cutting the code back.  For my fairly straight forward use, it's obvious that I can manually build files more efficiently in my Homesite 4.5. The HTML coding is quite simple.

Logic says there's got to be a way of simply plugging in the code to a word file and use that without using an HTML generator at all.

Can I buy a new copy of HTML for Dummies (I seem to have mislaid the copy I already had) and bang away in Psion Word and then upload that via RMRFtp?  If not, is there a memory friendly way around this?  I do want to be able to maintain the text part of the site with my 5mx.

Once I have that sorted out, I'd like to follow Itamar's direction and buy a 7 or a NetBook and tackle the images.  Now that I have moved the magazine up

onto the internet and stopped producing paper copies, I am out of the clutches of Publisher 2000 and finally see the way clear of being 100% Psion-activated.

Itamar, Nicole,

Yes, I read all 3 partly, just to make sure I was not missing anything! Don't want to miss important parts. Thanks.  Just wanted to know.  With the many viruses today that attach onto email addresses in your PC phonebook, I want to be careful.  About once a week for the part couple of months, viruses have tried to get into my system as attachments to mail.  fortunately, my anti-virus s/w has detected them always.
