I'm aware, that attachments are being filtered from the digest. The file was meant to go directly to the CC-Address. (I could have sent a separate mail instead :-( )

Itamar had lots of problems with a big file that blocked the server.  He had to call Freeserve Help Desk.  Therefore now, I check and clean the server before downloading the postings in my Psion.

You must save (export) the file as pure ASCII and give it a .htm or

.html extension. It's far easier to use the Symbian Text Editor (available for free) for that purpose.

Thanks Trygve, Marcus and Jason,

I have HTMLEdit, Neuon and Symbian text editors up and working.

HTMLdit is cool (and simple) for dashing off a quick program.

Neuon is user friendly (when I was told to "save as" and rename) and loaded with great bells and whistles.

Symbian works a treat once I realized that I cannot import a word file and continue - I copy and past into a new file and it comes out clean ASCII and renames as a usable HTML file.

I am abandoning Neuon even though it is probably the best program, because of cost (HTMEdit and Symbian are free).

I am retaining both HTMLEdit and the Symbian editors, HTMLEdit for the quick shot and Symbian for the massive projects (I can do all my work in word and paste it in).

Now back to the FTP program to make sure I understand it (I've only accessed my site and reviewed the file directories so far).  I am assuming that I can pull down files from the site into my Psion for modification (a text file is a text file is a text file, to paraphrase Gertrude Stein).

Thanks again,

Oh yes you can.

When I used to get email on my 5mx(before screen failure),I would open attachments only to find that they were in html but opened as text. To overcome this I would highlight the filename select rename and change the file extension from .txt to .htm . This did the trick and when I highlighted the file and pressed enter it opened in web as a web page.

hope this helps.

To: All

For several years I used the GIrBIL external Infrared device with Win 95 and was able to run PsiWin over IR, connect to mobile phones with an IR port and use the Psion Travel Modem with the PC.

I no longer have Win 95 and the instructions for installing under Win 98 say to use the old files on the floppy instead of the newer ones in Win 98 when prompted. I have done this with two PCs running Win 98SE and on both occasions it made such a mess of the PCs that I got blue screens when booting and had to format and reinstall Windows!

I have tried again installing under Win 98SE but retaining the newer files instead of the old ones on the floppy. The GIrBIL seems to be installed, it appears as an adapter in device manager and I've installed the Fast Infrared protocol, but I don't have the IR Monitor in Control Panel to be able to launch IR and there is no Virtual IR COM port in PsiWin.

Has anyone successfully set up the GIrBIL in Win 98SE?

Good question...

If you've set up the connection to use a phone number like '*99***1#' then you're definitely using GPRS...

Not all phones display anything on the screen when a GPRS connection is up.

(My Siemens M50 only display a small arrow next to the GPRS logo)

If it displays a phone number, you can be pretty certain that you're not using GPRS...

Well...

What can I say?

(Except that it was midnight and I was dead tired :-)

Anyway, as soon as you add the missing '2' in the 'home.c2i.net' part, the site becomes VERY readable on all but those Psioneers that uses WEB 1.1 on a classic S5. (The site is Frames based and I'm too lazy to make a <NOFRAMES> section)

In addition to what Itamar already mentioned about Holland, a Drent is a Dutchman living in Drenthe, one of the northern provinces of the Netherlands. It is a sparsely populated area, full of heatherfields, peatfields and Hunebeds (very old burial sites made from large stone

blocks). A very nice area for (bicycle) vacations.

Sorry, what you write about Group 4 isn't correct. Fax Group 4 is downwards compatible with Group 3. It would be a bit strange when the ITU-T would come with a new standard that wouldn't work with the millions of Group 3 machines in use around the world. Group 4 can also be used on analog phone lines at 14,400 bps rather than the 9600 bps of Group 3.

Dear Caspar,

<< I remember reading in a previous EPOC digest about using 10 AA batteries to charge a S7? Is that possible without any damage to the S7 batteries? >>

It's fine for the emergency situation when you desperately need you Series 7 charged but forgot to take the power supply with you. However, I wouldn't recommend it for regular use. Charging NiMH batteries requires fairly tight control over a few parameters. The charging electronics inside the Series 7 take care of that, but have been designed in combination with the power supply. And a cluster of 10 AA batteries doesn't have the characteristics the power supply has. The Series 7's charging electronics will therefore not operate continuously within the right parameter window when you use the 10 AA cluster.

This doesn't immediately damage the battery pack of the 7. But it does have a longer term effect when you regularly use such a cluster. Correct charging isn't only a question of getting the electricity in the batteries, so to speak, but also of keeping the internal physical chemistry of the batteries right. It's the internal physical composition that will change when you charge the batteries incorrectly. Do it once and following recharges using the power supply will mostly correct unwelcome changes in the internal composition. Use the 10 AA cluster repeatedly and these changes accumulate. They effectively age the batteries more quickly so that you have to replace the battery pack earlier.

Interesting to read in Palmtop User all about how Bluetooth actually works in day to day use.  They also mentioned the lack of EPOC drivers to make it work on a Psion which I think is a real shame.  Just imagine how nice it would be to link up a netBook or S7 to a suitably equipped phone such as an Ericsson T68i in this way - the ultimate communicator perhaps :-)  The hardware already exists in the form of Bluetooth PC and CF cards, we just need someone to write the drivers.  I do hope this will happen in due course.

I didn't realise SIS distribution files existed for Tom Tom's software.  I thought it always had to be installed directly from the CD-ROM via a PC which always annoyed me as I don't have easy access to a PC.

<< However they might insist you re-register and buy it again in order to use it on your Series 7 >>

<Which isn't the case either as you only need to register once for all RMR applications.>

This is certainly true for ER5 but if you want to run your RMR applications on ER6 then you have to pay up again and re-register!  I have 6 RMR applications I wanted to carry over to my 9210 but it would just be too expensive to do this.  RMR told me the programs had to be extensively re-written to run on ER6, so anyone wanting to carry over their RMR software to the 9210 - be warned, it will cost you!

But of course, with the demise of the Psion platform, the Epoc contents was rather limited. What irritates me is that they made the transfer without any advance warning or possibillity for a refund. I subscribed to a magazine about Psion/ Epoc machines, not about palm and pocketpc ones.   I might decide to continue reading it, but that should really be my choice and not theirs.>

I think this is a bit of a cheek and they really should at least offer a refund on the remaining subscription.  I received my "all in one" magazine this morning.  At least it gives the Digest a mention :-)

That's just Opera warning you that you're spending WAY too much money surfing...

Seriously, Opera have a few 'issues' with memory, specifically, it leaks to high heaven...

When Opera can't find more memory to leak away, it clears the memory by crashing.

You don't really need the 'latest version' since  that file contains the latest version of the source code.

You'll need the V2.31 source, too, if you want to be able to compile it.

(The file contains all the extra bits like icon files and supporting modules)

The files are available because the stuff is open source Freeware.

(Steve Litchfield made it into that just before he gavee up on updating the mess that he took over from another author)

When you use it, please be careful about long lines.

So?

I now have 4(!) Palms in my possession...

Unfortunately, they're WAY TOO limited for me.

Even the cheap Casio PV-S250 'PocketViewer' is better for me...

It, too, lacks a keyboard, but at least it came with a spreadsheet program.

The fact that it uses Compact Flash instead of RAM for internal storage doesn't hurt either.

It's OK for taking short notes when I don't want to risk damaging a REAL computer...

At least he didn't pick a WinCE machine.

It could well be...

The Psion software does a few VERY strange things during init...

When I was playing around with an Option firstfone (PCMCIA shaped GSM Phone), when I bumped into something...

The Psion sent a reset command, then the init string which had the AT command with the PIN code before it started to interrogate the phone about fax and other capabilities.

THEN... It bl**dy well sent the init string AGAIN!

Unfortunately, the AT command with the PIN code wouldn't unlock the phone because it was already unlocked, so gave an ERROR...

I got past it by removing the PIN code from the SIM, but I never tried to change the FAX class.

Personally, I think the joint publication is a really nice issue/round-up/journal of where the industry is right now. Refunds? I'm sure anyone who still feels agrieved can get a helpful response f, though I'd urge you all to hang on in there. With 7650 s/w starting to appear and with the P800 coming up, there's going to be lots of totally new Symbian coverage...

I meant 'comparable' in that it reminds me of it - thumb-typing, etc, with positive key action. Thank you for trying to help improving our Digest. Your suggestion is interesting but we have another way of dealing with this matter: we put in the subject line the title we want to give to our posting instead of the Digest number (your posting should have been titled "Suggestion for improving the Digest presentation" rather than " RE: EPOC DIGEST V1 # 046"), so the title of the posting appears clearly in the Posting Directory that you find at the beginning of the Digest. If you are only interested by one title, just copy it and paste in the Find (Ctrl-F) and you will be taken there straight away.

The Digest is created automatically with an excellent piece of software written by Rolf.  However, the live operator (the operator presently in charge of the Digest) still has to intervene after the Digest is created and before it is sent, in order to remove any "parasite" such as the "Out of the office" automatic replies etc...  If the postings were numbered, you understand that it would then pose a problem.

Hi digestives,

All this talk about Faxing inspired me to try again faxing with my T39m. (incidentally I usually use my USRobotics modem to send and receive faxes, via a landline, without any problems)

Having perservered with different settings, I have now managed to send faxes using both Class 1 & 2.

However, I have been unable to receive a fax. I set the everything up, the phone rings, the psion answers but then the process stops - the psion continues saying 'waiting for fax call' even tho' the Psion has answered it (if I move the phone so the IR can't see the Psion the call doesn't get answered).

After a short wait I get the following error message:

Problem occured when receiving a fax

Problem with modem (-102), check connection and try again.

Any mobile fax gurus know why ?

If it can send faxes, and answer an incoming fax call, I can't see why it can't receive a fax ?

If I want to try the GPRS service I'll have to upgrade my phone as the 7110 (now over 2 years old) does not allow this. From the Vodaphone catalogue I note that the new Nokia 8910 is not PDA compatible, while the new 7650 is an "overkill" for me already using a 5MX and S7. So, the question is what phone to go for. Between the following phones, which one would you advise and why :

Motorola V66i or V70

Nokia 6310i or 8310 (the ohters are too small for me)

Sony-Ericsson T39 or T68i

Thanks in advance and bye,

Subject: Travelling (through the window from my boot) IR modem

The only thing about my Psion IR Travel Modem that I can say gives me satisfaction is that it will definitely "travel" very soon - straight off my boot and out through the nearest window!  Yes, the darn thing is playing up again and even Itamar's suggestion of the cardboard tunnel trick (which did seem to work for a while but even he seems to have occasional trouble with it) now does not seem to cure these incessant connection problems.  I spoke to a local computer store assistant and he told me they had quite a number of returns on this model.  Anyway, I'm now ready to take a large mallet to the useless lump of dark plastic (ooh the satifaction of doing that!) or subject it to some other VERY slow and painful end.  After my sanity had returned (owning a Psion IR modem can be very bad for one's health y'know) I decided divorce was the only option.  Our 2˝ year relationship had been stormy at the best of times but now I'm looking for something new.  A modem that will not disconnect at will, fail to initialise or stop data flow halfway through downloading my email.  I decided to check out 3tech's web site again and noticed that they are about to launch a new version of their Pegasus 3 IR modem.  The "improvements" include a battery saving mode (when there is no data transfer it powers down a bit after 5 seconds).  It's memorably called the PP21-5600B.  I'm seriously thinking of getting one.  If I do I'll let everyone know how I get on with it.

What is EFR? I tried these codes on my 6210e (Orange) and got "Result Unknown"

TIA,

BTW, I can confirm that selecting IR twice does not activate it permanently (firmware 05.02).

Subject: HTML Wars Concluded

Thanks Michael for the excellent explanation of all the extra bits and pieces in a Word file.

And especial thanks (Michael, Sheryl and Jason) for pointing out (as did others) that I already have the capability of generating a TXT file from Word.

I get a bad idea in my head and it sticks.  I thought we lost TXT capability when we went from the 3 to the 5, when what we lost was RTF.  Never noticed that menu option in "more."

Now I don't need those extra programs.  I prefer writing my own HTML as, in poetry work, the HTML generators generate a large amount of extra code as it is paragraph focussed rather than line focused.  This makes editing a major chore sorting out the text from the tags.  When I write it myself I have a line followed by the tag, usually a <br> (for a single space) or a <p> (for a stanza break).  Very easy to read while editing.

I will play around with Neuon, Symbian and HTMLEdit to educate myself.  HTML seems to be a piece of cake compared to BASIC (the only other language I

know).

Thanks to all for the help.

Subject: HTM vs HTML

My step-son gave me my first lessons in HTML (he set up an account for me on FreeServers, helped me get my Domain name and set up my home page).  He taught me how to generate HTML pages using Homesight on my Dell.

Soon after I learned that I can generte web pages from Word on my Dell.  It generates tons of code to do the same thing I was doing with a few simple HTML tags.  The files Word produces are called HTM files.

I find the HTML and HTM files are essentially interchangable as long as you call them properly (HTM for HTM, HTML for HTML).

Now that I'm generating files on the 5mx, I find I can call them HTM or HTML and web recognizes them identically.

Is there a difference? and if so what?

TIA
