Rolf,

A general question on "strings".

If one had a mobile device with a program that only had Init String in the configuration, is there a way to include in this same string the string for "Data String"?  The objective here is to be able to set up the connection over IrDa (Mobile Phone) to connect on GPRS or HSCSD.

And thanks for your inputs on setting up for fax on the Psion.

>Can you explain just how I do that?

Sorry Keith, I'll expand on my answer:

Either use Ctrl-P or choose Printing from the File menu, and then Print. (BTW, in the emulator, you can use F1 as the Psion's MENU key.)

Then click on the printer button or use Ctrl-P to choose a printer (e.g. HP Laserjet 4, General, etc.)  NB: Use General or a real printer, not Printer via PC.

Underneath each real printer choice another box labelled "via" will

appear.  Choose via "File"

Use Ctrl-S or click on Settings, and choose a filename (the folder and drive will be your emulated Psion's drive, not your PC's).  If you chose General as your printer, it's a good idea to use a .txt extension, so that you can easily open the file in Windoze ... although you won't get any

fancy formatting this way.

Now when you print, your output will go to whatever file name you gave.

I haven't checked it, as my emulator paths aren't set up at the moment, so I don't have quick access to any of my third party programs, but AFAIK this should work in all programs.

So, now you have a file on your PC.  If you used General and call the file <something>.txt, you can use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder containing your emulator's drive and open the file by

double-clicking.  This will get opened with Notepad - or whatever you've got .txt associated with on your PC - and you can print from there.

If you picked a "real" printer, then there will be printer instructions embedded in the file, so you should copy the file directly to your

printer.  This used to be easy with DOS, but in their infinite wisdom, Microsoft missed out the facility to just copy a file to a printer under Windoze.  I think you can hold of utilities that will do this, though - try Tucows.

To do it from a DOS window, choose MS-DOS prompt from the Start menu.  You should get a prompt that looks something like

C:\>

The C:\ bit is your current path.  You can navigate to your folder using

"D:" (etc.) to change drives, or

"cd "<folder>, e.g. cd Psion

C:\Psion>

cd backups

c:\Psion\backups

cd \epoc32\Wins\C

C:\epoc32\Wins\C>

If you start the string with "\" you will go to an absolute path; without the "\" you will go to a relative path.

If you printer is connected to LPT1, you should be able to copy the file to the printer using

COPY <myfile> LPT1

Hope this helps.

Nic - I use DATA files similar to your ornithology file - different fields for all sorts of info.

The 250 character problem only exists if you designate a label "TEXT" --  the workaround is to add a new label and designate it "MEMO"  (then delete the TEXT label) - Memo labels have unlimited length  (but may not always convert well to Excel).

I convert my DATA files to the PC either live or from backup or archive -- once in the PC you can do anything with them that Windows allows, including copying and pasting into MS-WORD --  then you can convert them back to the Psion.

Another way might be to put ornithology observations in a JOTTER file - each entry can be dated, and then copied and pasted anywhere - Jotter has the advantage that when it's printed, all entries print consecutively - DATA entries print one page each.

To Itamar and Michael Degn -    I've been reading this Digest since James Laurence started it in 1997.  Some postings don't interest me, many do.

There used to be a lot of postings about how to use the S5, now it's more about connectivity.   But Itamar, Michael and others - THANK YOU for keeping this forum going and thanks to all for real questions and friendly answers.

We're a very diverse group united by our use of (affection for?) Psions - no point in hostility.

I admit that I don't use my Revo & Mako all that often these days as I work out of my home office...I just keep them charged up to keep their memories intact, once every 2 weeks.  My Revo is getting close to three years now (and hopefully will keep working for a long time, knock on wood).

In my experience, I've found that people who charge their Revos daily (expecially with high % capacity left) usually end up with battery meter calibration problems (their Revos run out of power at 85%).

Also, I think it's a very bad idea about charging the Revo while you are away for 30 minutes a day...you'll be overcharging it in no time!!!  Two weeks away from your machine (if it has a full charge, and no programs running in the background) should be no problem (isn't for me).  If you're going away longer, back everything up and just let your Revo discharge over the time away.  A full fresh charge wouldn't hurt it, and the little time it takes to restore the contents is a lot cheaper than coming home to a burned out Revo (and maybe your house too)!

(Personally though, I take my machines with me...they don't get a holiday.)

David,

I have not tried DreamConnect but I've been using iContacts for some time and this sw obviously does the same tricks as DreamConnect. IMHO iContacts is very well written and it allows you to customise the screens (also the way lables/variables appear) and the way the sw works in a number of ways. It can also interact directly with the Email app. Have a look at it!

Subject: Spares anyone?

All,

Short story:  Is anyone interested in a Revo/Mako for spare or primary

use?   This isn't a fire sale.  Both are good units with the ability

to run the battery down to a blinking box and still work.   Email me

with an offer for one or both (with boxes, spare stylii, etc.).  The

going price on eBay seems to be $75-$100, however I would rather sell

to the Epoc Digest.  I trust our members more anyway!

Longer story: My wife gave up on figuring out the recharge of her

little-used Mako and went back to a Palm.  That makes 2 of 4 people

in my family that gave up on figuring out recharging batteries in

Mako/Revos and went back to AAA battery versions of Palm.  That

forces me to reconsider how many units I need for "spares".  Since I

normally use the Psion 5MX, and have a spare of the 5MX, I've decided

that my 2 remaining Diamond Mako units that are unnecessary, even as

spares.  The family member remaining in the Psion camp lost a

RevoPlus to a battery cable failure recently - not good for the

politics since it went out slowly and really irritated her.  Soooo,

I'm back to replaceable batteries.  The remaining Makos show no signs

of any failure and demonstrate their ability to run down the battery

to a blinking battery box and beyond and not lose any data.  I took

one of them out of service as a backup for the other, but I already

have a Psion 5MX that could replace it.

Just to keep on a digest topic, I have to admit that Psion's

unswerving course of leaving the consumer PDA/HHC field is affecting

my thoughts about my own course of action.  As a side job at work I

support all PDA/PPC/HPC/HHC types.  For me personally, there are a

couple applications that don't easily exist on other platforms:  EPOC

Word if well beyond anything in the PPC/HPC world, and Palmltop Money

is very good.  I've already queried Palmtop BV about porting Money to

other platforms - they do answer, the answer is always NO.  THey are

obviously looking elsewhere.   I still like keyboards - HWR works

only under ideal circumstances.  Even a thumbboard is better than

HWR.   In any case, I really should reduce my store of Psions since I

may well be the only person in the family left using one.

Email me off digest with any offers.

Itamar, thanks for that.  I decided, however, to opt for O2 GPRS, which seems to be substantially less costly here and, with help from Christopher, eventually got it up and running.

BTW, how many bytes have you used by now? I "lost the run of myself" when I connected, browsing via Opera, and have 300 Kb chalked up.  With O2 here, one can get 5Mb per month for EUR 12.50 ( GBP 7.50). How does that compare, I wonder?

Mike, I found your site extremely helpful, thanks. FYI, I believe that for O2 (Ireland), in the 8310 settings:

Strange. I've just tried sending a test message from my 5mx using Freeserve and it is correctly time stamped when retrieved by both Email in the 5mx

and Eudora in the PC. There was a discusion a while ago (though I'm not sure if it was here) where someone was consistently getting emails with the wrong time stamp and it turned out that his PC was not set to the time zone he was in! Another possibility is that the recipient is using an ISP with a mail server in a different time zone.

Send yourself a message from the S7, retrieve it with a PC and see what the time stamp is - that should confirm whether the problem is at your end.

From: Peter Keene

Subject: NETPAD ANSWERS 2

Hi Guys,

For Itamar re netpad:

Replacement for S5mx?

The short and easy answer to that would be no. The netpad is heavier, bulkier, much more expensive and doesn't have a keyboard. However, the screen is excellent and PsiBoard can give you much of the functionalty of a proper keyboard. To speculate for a minute. I think that we all know that the likelihood of Psion ever making consumer machines again is virtually zero. That said, perhaps the answer to Kevin's dream machine is a casing with a lower IP rating (a major cost-driver) than the netpad, the netpad's screen and the S7/netBook keyboard. To keep costs down I suppose you could use the S7 processor and motherboard. You would still end up with a machine that is slightly bigger than the S5, but which would, I think, be a lot more desireable.

More faith in Psion?

If, however slight the chance, we are ever to see Psion consumer machines again, then the Psion group has to be successful. Psion Teklogix is doing well, mainly due to Teklogix's success with its industrial machines in North America. If they can successfully launch the netpad, a really powerful and well made machine, into that market, then maybe Psion will regain its confidence. I find it encouraging that they are pushing the netpad in North America in a way that that they never did with the netBook. (Interestingly, according to the grapevine, there are some really big deals in the offing for the netBook, three years after its launch.)

I don't want to add to the controversy that Kits started, but I think that it would actually make sense for Psion Teklogix to offer a version of the netpad running WINCE. It seems that almost every industrial handheld computer in the US runs a version of WINCE or MS-DOS. Why not use that to introduce Psion's excellent design ability to the US market, riding on the back of Teklogix's current success? Maybe, over time, "WINCE netpad" users would become interested in the power, elegance and functionality of Symbian V5.

This all not far removed from Kevin's dreamland, but Psion Teklogix IS pushing the netpad in North America, that's what gives me more faith.

They vary in price (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail) from $145 to $375, depending upon which features they have. I suggest going to Garmin's comparison page and put a check mark by every eTrex model. Depending upon your wants, the plain vanilla model may well suffice for you.

After setting up my own website and maintaining it for over a year, I will say the effort is significant - especially if you include images.  I would recommend and personally prefer to have the file e-mailed periodically.

The disadvantage is that you won't have the visibility of a web site and search engine access.  The advantage is that those on your list will probably actually read it.

Images are nice but increase the effort significantly.  I am considering closing down my art gallery pages because of the effort required to obtain acceptable images ( a bigger problem with art than with illustrations).  I spent three weeks with the currently featured artist "getting it right,"

I agree...and...I don't agree. It really depends on the lighting. In a sunlit environment, like my local library atrium where I'm typing these very words, the screen looks *good*. At home on the couch the screen looks much worse. Still it is usable, and I'm mostly satisfied with it. Give it the clarity or contrast of a Revo and I'd be 100% satisfied. Keep in mind though that over 40's will have more trouble with it than younger folks will - all other things being equal.

"I'd also prefer standard penlight cells so that one could pick up a pack of Duracells in an emergency, just like my MC218."

I agree. I use my 5mx so often, and so much, that I've come to greatly appreciate the fact that I can top it back up to 100% with just a 20 second swap of NiMH cells. Besides, I like the fact that I'm never far from a fuel station: any shop with AA's. I also keep a couple of spare cells in the glove compartment of our car.

"In my not so humble opinion, the main thing that's wrong with the Revo\Mako is that it's missing a little round cover with a coin slot to open on one end of the machine so that the NiMh's can be user replaced when they are dead."

That and the lack of a card slot. No memory expansion, no onboard backup--yuck.

"I have no problems with my Mako's battery in daily use."

You're fortunate. My went back a couple weeks after I bought it. It never charged properly. Nice unit though. Parting with it was definitely sweet sorrow!

"I simply switch the Mako off and connect it to the charger every evening before I go to bed"

My problem is that I need a PDA ready to go 24 hours a day. I keep weird hours, mostly due to my illness.

"when you go on holiday, put the charger on a timer so the machine gets 30 minutes per day."

This is a brilliant idea IMHO. It should quite effectively solve the "I was gone for so long that my Revo's battery drained down and now all of my data, which I was of course too lazy or forgetful or busy to backup, is now gone" problem!

Andy,

I think having *both* delivery options available is ideal, but if only one is possible, I'd prefer having the zine emailed to me. On pictures: they wouldn't be absolutely necessary for *every* article, but some reviews, walkthroughs, or tutorial type articles may really work better *with* pictures.

Someone said: (Sorry, I lost track of who had written the original message!)

"I also found that my S5 was too power hungry."

The solution for that problem is simple: 1 charger and 2 pairs of NiMH cells. It only takes 20 seconds (or less) to take a S5 back up to full power this way. Just keep one pair in the charger, and swap them with the depleted cells in the S5. I swap mine out daily, and consequently have full access to my 5mx 24 hours a day, wherever I am. Full unimpeded access to his 5mx makes Dave a happy camper :}

I checked out your site the other day and, what can I say, I found it uplifting. I hope you don't mind that I've appropriated the picture of the teddy bear with his 5mx for my PC's wallpaper. BTW, keep cycling for all of us! I had to give it up in my early 20's -- and I'm only now finding out why. (connective tissue disorder, I'm afraid.) Here's the info from 3Lib:

"(from Charles Newgas) Printing from the emulator. Although it is not possible to print direct from the emulator, you can print to file and copy the file to your printer with only one extra mouse click. The easiest way to do this is to create a DOS batchfile called "EpocPrint.Bat" on your Windows95 desktop. Inside it put just the single line CopyC:\epoc32\wins\c\printfile lpt1: (Change the drive and printer port letters if necessary). It is now easy to print from the emulator. Simply print to file using the driver that is most appropriate for your printer (the emulator will default to using file "printfile" in the root of the virtual internal disk), and double-click on the batchfile on your desktop."

Hope this helps. I've successfully done this in the past. Can't help beyond that though - I uninstalled the EMU long ago.

And did anyone else notice that AlarmPlus (freeware, same author) has been upgraded recently? It now includes all the utility of SysBack and it can start any app automatically after a reset. Thanks for suggesting iContacts, Jan. I actually did demo iC for quite some time. I was not very happy with, what I felt was, it's cumbersome way of dealing with categories (folders, if I recall). I was planning, reluctantly, to reg it when DC came out. DC is IMHO a much nicer app than iC, but to each his own :) Also DC seems to be well supported. DreamSpring has already brought out a substantial upgrade to the program since I reg'd my copy, and is about to release another upgrade. Anyway, enjoy iC!

P.S. DC also uses the standard Contacts database and, like iC, can interact with Email. That is: you can still call up any given contact from within Email.

"Re. Colour screen - I thouhgt just like you, but after I started to use the S7 I changed my mind. The colour screen is that much easier to read and use that my 5MX now seems very dull and difficult to read / use."

I'm afraid you may have misunderstood me. I'm well aware of the many benefits that a full-time backlit colour screen affords, especially over a greyscale screen the likes of the one in the 5mx and *I would be willing to pay* for those benefits (chiefly the much higher contrast), but having just come from a PDA with a full-time backlit TFT display I find that *I can do without those benefits* -- especially given the other benefits that the 5mx affords. As far as the 7 goes it's much too underfeatured to ever replace my laptop, and far too large to ever work as a handheld for me. I really don't want to be forced to carry a satchel everywhere I go! Accordingly, If I were going to move on from the 5mx (given the fact that Psion is no longer developing true handhelds) it would be straight to a Jornada 72x, rather than to a 7 or nB. So a small "6mx" with a colour screen would be great, but the 5mx is fine, even with it's display, and it indeed suits my needs on the whole better than anything else out there. In fact, that's why I bought it (in fact two) even after Psion had made their, by now, infamous announcement and why I didn't buy a Jornada. As I was at least trying to make clear *I would pay the difference for the improved colour model as presented by Kevin but I don't presently miss having such an option*. I just wish that the 5mx screen could be improved via an upgrade to it's reflective backing or would have been improved already by Psion at least to the level of clarity found in a Palm V or a Revo. Also, I would possibly purchase a "Revo 3" with a different battery technology then the Revo line presently has (whether LiON, Alkalines, or user replaceable NiMH cells) and an SD slot over *any* larger unit (even a 6mx!).

For me *a balance of useful features in a truly portable package takes priority over all other considerations* when deciding what handheld to buy and use. So far the 5mx is the best balanced handheld for *my* needs (even with it's less-than-ideal screen), but a Revo 3 sans battery problems and with the addition of an SD slot would perhaps have been an even better overall package for my needs. Not that we'll ever find out now; not that I'm complaining :)

In case anyone's interested (and you may not be) I just bought a Sony Vaio to use on an upcoming trip to the UK, where I'm planning to move back after years of living in California.

The new PC has Windows XP and I didn't know if I could sync it with my 5mx without a 3-hour download.  I installed Mako EpocConnect which came with the Mako/ Revo I've never used (because of battery fears).  The bottom line is that the Mako software works perfectly with Win XP and it's not necessary to download 2.3.3 from Psion's site.

Now a question about the REVO/ MAKO - if I finally get the guts to charge it is it really wise to place it on charge every day?

Hi Jim, (answers in-line)

"You got my attention.  #1, will it work on a classic 5,"

I just checked -- according to the info on this page:

http://www.dreamspring.com/products/dreamconnect/requirements.html

the answer is ... (drumroll please!) NO!

Sorry, I would have mentioned earlier that DC is not compatible with a classic 5 -- if I had known.

"and #2, is it e-mail connected to provide e-mail addresses?"

YES, see below.

"Oh yes, #3, does it use the same database file or do you have to re-enter of transfer data entrees?"

Yes it *does* use the same database. The extra information, such as the categories, is kept in a separate file, but the contact info itself is shared with Contacts. Once running in the background it can be set to be called up by the Contacts icon. Also using Macro 5, DC can be set to come up using the Contacts icon even if it is not already running.

"Might be the ticket when I use the Classic 5 as backup for 5mx.  At present I have to correct a text file and manually scan for addresses when on the c5."

The best way to find out if it's suitable for your *5mx* would be to try out the demo. As mentioned above -- it won't work on your 5 :(

BTW, the price has gone up since I bought it, and it is a bit expensive at $28 us. Still it's worth it, IMHO. BTW, DreamSpring has announced that another upgrade is on the way. I know I'm excited -- well, a bit excited anyway.

<< I've noticed a few times that when I send email from my S7 the recipient has said it had been time-stamped about an hour later than when it had been sent ...<SNIP>... I thought (although I may be wrong) someone once mentioned there is some bug in the EPOC ER5 Email program that it indeed does this when using some ISP's >>

Yes, you're absolutely right, this is a bug in ER5.  I don't think it's dependant on the ISP.  I've often noticed it but never thought any more about it, but your query prompted me to do a bit of testing.  My conclusion is that the Psion doesn't handle GMT offsets correctly.  What I think happens is this:

Switching on summer times on the psion, introduces a +1 hour offset from the base (GMT) time.  When the psion email app composes it's headers, the 'Date:' line should show the time local to that machine, followed by the offset from GMT that has been applied to produce that time.  So, in this case, it should show the time (with the +1 hour offset added) followed by +0100.  But it doesn't.  It shows the offset as +0000.

The receiving computer takes the quoted time & takes off the offset to get back to GMT.  Then it applies whatever offset is set locally on that machine & quotes the resultant time.

However, if the receiving computer is a Psion running ER5, it takes the quoted time, takes off the offset & just quotes that without applying it own local offset.

I tried it this morning on my 5mx.  I live in the UK, so I currently have summer times on.  At 6:30-ish, I sent a mail from my 5mx to my work address, with a 'cc' to my personal address.  When I got to work, my work's PC (running M$ Lookout) showed the time of the email as 7:30-ish.  I then picked it up on my 5mx (which showed the time as 6:30-ish, because it ignores the offset). Examining the POP3 log file 'C:\Logs\Email\ImLog110.txt', the 'Date:' line of the header shows up as follows:

28/08/02 06:34:19 << Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 06:33:39 +0000

(Note the +0000 on the end)

The same was shown under 'View/Options.../Internet headers' on the PC.  I reckon the PC takes the '6:33:39' from the 5mx, takes off the +0000 & thinks the GMT time is 6:33:39.  It then adds it's own +1 hour offset (because of daylight saving) & displays the time of the email as 7:34.

Then, going the other way around, at 8:30-ish I sent an email from my work's PC, to my personal address.  When I picked this up on my 5mx, the time was shown as 7:30-ish & the corresponding line in the log file was:

28/08/02 08:33:44 << Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 08:26:26 +0100

(Note the '+0100' on the end)

The Psion takes the '08:26:26' from the PC, takes off the +0100 offset & quotes the time of the email as '7:26', without adding the +1 hour offset currently in force on the Psion.

Can anyone concur with this or give any comments or further observations?

Now I have a question (or two) of my own:

I'm trying to cut my telecommunications costs.

I use my 5mx with my mobile phone (still using the trusty SH888!) on a contract with T-Mobile for all my personal email.  I use various ISPs (Freeserve, BT-click, OneTel, BizOnline, etc.).  The only trouble is, they all have access numbers beginning with 08, which T-Mobile doesn't include in their free minutes allowance, so I have to pay for each data call, even though I have many free minutes left over at the end of each month.  Does anyone know of a 'free' ISPs with whose access number does not begin with '08'?  Or is there any other solution?

Also, does anyone know of a free service which will send an SMS to notify you of an incoming email?

Kind regards,
