Dear Itamar,

<< Is Vodaphone using O2 in Holland ? >>

The Dutch Libertel network is now called Vodafone and Telfort changed its name to O2. Telfort needed to have nationwide coverage earlier than it could realise and rented network capacity from Libertel, mainly in the north of the Netherlands. This gave Telfort/O2 more time to expand its network which was completed some time ago.

<< For sake of good order, I feel neither betrayed nor hurt >>

For the same sake - when you ask Peter whether the netPad will improve 'our faith in Psion' you're sending out the signal that you don't have much confidence in the company.

<< There was most definitely a message about the address change on the digest >>

I've trawled through my EPOC Digest database, which starts with issue no. 18, and haven't found an official notification to all subscribers of the address change. The footer of digest no. 35 is the first to mention the new address in the "How to subscribe..." footer. I doubt many will have noticed it - I certainly didn't. It's that Mike Fellhauer asked the question that I now see that digest staff have been using the new address already. It would have escaped my attention, otherwise.

A colour screen isn't the determining factor here. You can continue using your Series 5mx until it literally falls apart.

Well over 570 regulars now, shame Itmar & Co  are not running a pub.

Was very interesting recently seeing peoples top 5 apps and how they use them.

Has led me to wonder how the 570 odd members reading this use their EPOC machines, are they series 5,  5mx MC218's   Series 7, Netbook, Netpad, 9210/9290  PC Mac or other.

I would appreciate a private mailjust to see for my own interest only.

I personally have gone from 3a to 5 then MC218 (until screen cable) then 5Mx and now 9210

Have had the 9210 for about 2 weeks now so am getting used to it,  still keep touching screen, Doh,  At work the other day, have always been known as the man with gadgets, slight interest in the Psion/Ericsson,  but when I played a movie file in front of them with my new toy I was surrounded by open mouthed amazement. So it does seem that a colour screen does make all the difference.

Re the PDF fanzine, I subscribe to Palmtop have done from Issue 1 (have them all if someone can give them a good home)  but surely if they can no longer produce a bimonthly  EPOC only  issue with all their contacts and feelers, what makes others think they can.  No insult intended.

I regularly read Tucows, PDAGeek, Buzz,  but Epoc news other than ER6 is about as rare as rocking horse droppings.

So where is the content of this Fanzine going come from.

best wishes

Absolutely this why I am in the process of purchasing a psion 7. I meant this in the context of what I have owned in the past. I had a sharp wizard oz 70 with only 3mb.

I am looking for an ethernet card for my netbook myself. Could you tell us which brand and model card you are using? I have been using my netbook with an old hayes 28.8 modem card and despite my searches, all 56K modem cards refuse to work on my netbook. Now that you have succesfully used your card with the new rom, I would appreciate if you could let me know about the settings, and most importantly, your card so I can try to get my netbook going.

To Simon,

I have bought a 1GB CF a little while ago. Before that my largest CF was

a 192MB CF. Both are from SanDisk. I have bought the 1GB in Germany at a

retail store close to Dusseldorf. Price was: ˆ 820,- EURO incl. VAT of

16% in Germany.

Especially opening of programs is slower. I am impressed that a PDA this

*old* (Psion S5mx Pro) can handle a CF card this large at all as they

were not available at the time. Anyhow, I am using the 1GB now on my

Canon G2.

I have bought another CF from SanDisk, a 512MB Ultra. Price: ˆ 359,-

incl. VAT of 16% in Germany. I would recommend the 512MB Ultra as a

compromise in storage space and speed.

Hope this helps. If anyone wants the address of the store, please let me

know.

I'm sorry that I underestimated your experience and the project you are following ;-)

Did you have a look a Kevin Millican's PsiDat? It seems to support some custom OPL

programming and supports all the database stuff. It makes use of an OPX so maybe asking

Kevin for assistance might be another approach.

Neil,

I think David just made an off-the-cuff comment as opposed to any real criticsim of your excellent software.  The outliner softwares under Palm were designed for different purpose to what TasMan was designed for. There is no comparison at all as they are both different type of animals.  I think it started with someone else recommending TasMan without truly understanding what an outliner is used for.

BTW for those who do not know what an outliner does, check out FoxPop's review of Ximplify myList of 9210.

As promised, here is my Monday summary of email I received about the Fanzine idea over the last few days ... I received a total of four(!!!) emails regarding the idea, two offering to proof read, one offering ideas for articles and one offering general support for the idea.  As you can probably guess I am very surprised about this and the only conclusion that I can reach is that producing a fanzine would be a total waste of time and this is not something that people really want.  I'd love someone to prove me wrong but I am now going to give up on the idea and simply remain a reader and contributor of this digest and a couple of forums and the Sunday evening EPOCChat.

Thank you to David, Darryl, Julie and Andrew and also to Neil.

Kind regards.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply, although I'm not sure I made myself clear.

I have emptied ALL my message folders, ie there are NO messages in any message folder (th4 no messages to lose). There are however lots of stray files on the disk in the supposedly empty folders. There is an 'Index' file of 1 or 2KB and files with names like '38a2b338' of 0KB.

From what you said I imagine I can delete the whole 'messages' folder and let the application recreate it ? If so, will this effect my mailbox & fax settings or are these stored elsewhere ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Jason

It seems that with the Series 5's Message Suite, deleting the "Messages" folder just deletes the entire message store without the loss of email and fax settings. When the application is launched again, a new message store

is created and the existing mailbox is still shown. This is unlike the Email application in ER5 machines where deletion of the "Mail" folder will also destroy all mail and fax settings. Initially, you can just exit Email, rename your "Messages" folder to hide it and open the application again. It will create a new "Messages" folder on the same drive as before. Then, if all is well, you can delete the original file which you renamed.

Re. Superglue - [off topic] I found superglue extremely effective. Recently I glued the mirror in my son's car back onto the front windscreen. I use it for plates, porcelain, glass and of course a variety of plastics. However, it does not glue all plastics. Have some acetone ready when working with it in case it drops onto your skin.

Answer to: Jason Garbutt

Re. Stray email files - I don't have a folder system\messages on my S7 at all, and wonder what program created this folder. I don't think it is the email program. However, first rename the folder to "Oldmessages" and if it does not create any problems delete it.

Answer to: David Lir

Re. Future parts - It is to be expected that POS and others will have parts available for some time longer than Psion themselves, but sooner or later their source(s) will dry up, at which time we will all be forced to move on.

OPERA AND MEMORY PROBLEM

I don't know of any settings that will make Opera considerably less memory hungry but I get most of the memory back after closing the app and either use a defragmentation program like MMU or defrag or simply go to memory on the system's screen menue. You can free more if you delete the contents of the cache or stored sitenames. (Have a look at the temp files too, you could use cleanit) But while operating it will still be a nuisance. If that is too much for you - downgrade to version 3.x - it is a little less complex, bookmarks are a mess but it needs less memory and doesn't crash.

DrB5Read

David Lir wrote

Didn't come across that one but I have Biblioreader installed, a French macro that seems to do pretty much the same. It can also autoscroll and insert signets. I think, I also got it from epocboulevard, i.e. pnicolas pages.

1GB cf card

Wouldn't mind to have one but hate to buy it. The cost is still prohibitive. 128 MB gives probably the best value per money at the moment (price per MB) but I' running into problems with that size right now. So I'm searching for a reasonable priced (under 100€) 256 MB, perhaps I'll let myself be tempted by 512 MB but they all want well over 200€ for that one at least. And you can't get a 1GB on ebay or a bargain shop! If you really need that much memory I would strongly recommend two or more smaller cards instead. (Unless you've just won the lottery jackpot, of course)

Hi David,

I tried this out. I switched the modem on and set the Psion to wait

for the fax. I waited 10 minutes. To my surprise the modem did not

switch off and I think that its normal automatic switch-off time with

no activity is less than 10 minutes. The Psion was still waiting.

I then sent a fax. The phone rang, but the modem just refused to

pick up the phone. Nothing changed. So I did not receive the fax.

I received confirmation from 'Vassilios' that this is the normal

behaviour of the TM, but I am surprised. I would expect either the automatic switch-off or the equipment still active and ready to

receive the fax. It is neither of those options.

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden
