Subject: Re: Data Sending over GPRS
Hi folks,
Well, no doubt about it, one can receive serious answers on this Digest!
Thanks, Rolf, Arent, et al, for filling us in on GPRS and overheads: it's all quite clear to me now, I think....:-)
And, on the cost side, in this country at any rate, I reckon HSCSD is quite cheaper. For example I reckon I could download a Digest, over GSM and HSCSD, in not much more than a minute, say 12 cent. On GPRS, between sending and receiving, I'd say about 60Kb to download a Digest: rate on O2 (unless one is on a tariff), 7c per 10Kb, ie 42 cent. However, one can subscribe, as I have, to a tariff on which one can, for example, access 5Mb per month for Eur 12.50, ie 80 odd Digests, cost approx 16 cent per Digest: OK, not much dearer, you'd say, but of course there aren't 80 Digests in a month, and even allowing for other emails, I doubt very much that I'd use 5Mb...
All that having been said, GPRS is undoubtedly faster and cleaner IMHO, and I think I'll stick with my 5Mb for a while, just to see how things go!
The foregoing of course is only relevant to Ireland, but thought I'd share it anyway. Perhaps if one were mailing/receiving abroad, GPRS might transpire to be quite the better bet, having regard to the cost of roaming? In short,
maybe GPRS away, and GSM/HSCSD at home?
Regards,
Kevin [Cork, Ireland (home of Keano:-)]

I know what you mean, Steve. Now if you're into cycling, I have
wallpaper files for a 1965 Moulton Standard, 1998 Land Rover (the
bike bike, not the car), and a generic standard diamond-frame bike. :-)
Are you trying to create your own design in PhotoShop, or scan
something into PhotoShop and massage it?
I discovered XnView. With PhotoShop and it, I've been able to
convert something I did in PhotoShop into an mbm file, copy to my 5mx/Mako, and use Sketch to get a wallpaper file. If you want to
know more, just e-mail me and I'll try to explain my method.
Re: 1GB CF Card. When I bought my first Psion, a 5ive, I was amazed (being a PC user) at how tiny all the apps were. I assume they all
are now. Just what the hell do all you folks have on your Psions
which would require a 1GB card? You must be creating/saving tons of
files - no? Sounds like each of you are a "Library of Congress" or
"The British Library". :-)

Hi Guys,
For Steve Hodgson re wallpaper:
I'm afraid I'm a bit slack when it comes to bookmarking websites, but if I remember correctly I found a link on pocketinfo to a German site with brilliant wallpaper. Some of it is a bit spacy, but there is also a lot of subdued and tasteful stuff. I downloaded 10 images to the netBook with the idea of changing wallpaper every month or so, but find "Blue Droplets" so restful that I've never bothered to change.
If I stumble across the URL in my meandering through my files I'll let you know, but I'm almost sure that you'll find it through pocketinfo (can't even remember THEIR full address - grey cell overload).

Dear Rolf,
You're so right. There was never any mention of the change of the address in any Digest. However, a special email "Epoc Digest admin update" was sent to all subscribers on 19-07-2002, between Digest # 033 and # 034. Here's an extract from the email:
Dear Subscriber,
After the disappearance of the ups5 digest I set up the Epoc Digest in May which launch has been successful. Some of you quite rightfully noted that it is not healthy if I would run this digest by myself and therefore I send you this update...
...We have now created a team of operators who will take it in turn to handle your messages and send out the digest...
...At the same time we would like to update you with a change in the email address of the digest from the above mentioned one to : Epoc

I am looking for an ethernet card for my netbook myself. Could you tell us which brand and model card you are using? I have been using my netbook with an old hayes 28.8 modem card and despite my searches, all 56K modem cards refuse to work on my netbook.
</QUOTE>
Hi there,
I believe the maximum speed that you can use on a modem card for both netBook and Series 7 is 38400 even if it says 56K on the card. I used a Psion Dacom 56K/100-10 ethernet card and it worked fine as a modem at 38400, but I couldn't get it to work on our network with the original ethernet software even with its own TCP/IP address; when I spoke to the Psion Technical Support people they said that I should try to access an internet address, which led me to believe we were talking at cross purposes!
Good luck.
All the best,
Kate!!

agreed - we are rather a long way from Psion usage. I thought about
whether I was even going to post non-Psion choices, but a couple of
members had responded before saying that the info was still needed
given that Psion itself is phasing out of production for the consumer
world. I had more than 5 units myself as primary or backups or
whatever before I started selling down to my current 2-1/2 Psion
units. The half comes from a question about the remaining RevoPlus
battery which I can neither prove nor disprove w/o using it myself -
no time for now.
The J720 screen is fine. The amount of pressure on the screen
necessary to register a contact does not cause the unit to rock back
or the screen to move. The hinge is quite solid and the unit is
heavy enough to resist correct stylus poking (sic). There are
conditions where the OS doesn't want to acknowledge a stylus poke yet
readily accepts a keyboard input. Dunno why. It's still a good unit
and I'm fairly keyboard centric anyway.

I started out with a S3a, 512KB and was instantly hooked.
In Jan 1998 the S5(8MB) arrived at the local tech pusher(ordered for me) and i became even more hopeless...
Some time later I stumbled upon the Org II Homepages and suddenly got hold of one of those, too. (Yes, it's in use, handling my Beetle Bailey collection)
When my S5 died(screencable) in dec 2000, I had just gotten hold of the netBook, which is my main home computer at the moment.
(Email, website editing, games, some writing, a bit of timeplanning, software development, more gaming)
A MC400 laptop also showed up, and that, too, is used for writing.
(Gotta love a laptop with full-travel keyboard, GUI and 20 Hours active use on a recharge :-)
All in all, and with the original Organiser, there's now 10 Psions and a solitary GeoFox in my collection...

You could do as I did...
I downloaded the 'CoolDuo.jpg' picture which I found at www.chrisfoxx.com, used PaintShopPro(on a PC) to resize it and then used MBMView to convert it to .MBM and saved it in \system\wallpaper
The resulting file is 217KB, so...
(And since it's copyrighted, I can't mail it to you)
The same picture, and other similar ones can also be found at www.sabrina-online.com (Follow the link to 'ES Productions')
That 'Sabrina' in the picture is an Amiga fan doesn't matter...

Read our message again - both Itamar and myself are saying exactly the same thing.
<< For instance I'm sending this Freesurf msg via SFR.net after editing the smtpserver name as required by sfr.net >>
There's no need for that. You simply create an SFR account in Email with the its SMTP and POP details and make it the default account. In case you prefer to have all of your e-mails carrying your Freeserve address you enter this as your address for the SFR account as well. Press [Ctrl][s] to send out all, select SFR as ISP and the messages will be sent out. When back in the UK you make your Freeserve account the default one and all's back to normal.

The introduction of Pocket PC 2002 means that the Windows CE version for the H/PC models is two releases behind P/PC at the moment. In other words, we're still waiting for the Microsoft frog to leap when it comes to H/PC. It looks like Microsoft gave the frog his redundancy notice some time ago. Which wouldn't be surprising, given that H/PC now consists of a single HP model and a single NEC model.

Hi Hanno,
Opera's memory problems/leaks are well known. I remember reading on another forum a reply by an Opera employee; he stated at the time that Opera was aware of the problem, had already worked out a solution (fixed the bugs, I suppose) and would be implementing the fix in an upcoming release. Hopefully it won't take too long to come out - meanwhile might I suggest a downgrade to Opera 3.62?

Not really. Though I agree that the form of a typical Palm OS PDA does limit its usefulness to some degree, I think you'd be surprised to see how intensively many Palm OS users use their devices! Many (not most) Palm users use their handheld intensively enough that they will only get a handful of days and never weeks from a fresh set of cells or a single charge. I personally feel that the only correct unit for measuring the runtime of a battery-driven computer is *hours*. Once a consumer gets a good estimate of the number of hours any particular handheld truly gives he or she can easily calculate how many days, weeks, months (or in the case of my wife - years!) it should be before a battery swap or recharge should become necessary; how many days or weeks a given user will get between swaps/charges depends on how many hours of runtime the handheld provides. Palm's claim of weeks is certainly ingenious *marketing*, but as I said, it's also a bit ingenuous too. :)

Me too! btw, could you lend me 5 bucks?

David Lir - \\:>{o>
P.S. The figure of 20 hours for a Palm 3x should be viewed as a *rough* estimate. There were times that my Palms' batteries lasted longer than that - and there were times they lasted quite a bit less.

I've got one of these and it generally works very well. The only problem I have with it is that I often have to hit Esc and Ctrl-p to retry a print job - but only if it's the second or greater print in a series. A single printout always goes through just fine. A bit of a nuisance but it doesn't really bother me. FWIW, i don't think it's the Actisys pod which is the problem here - more likely the HP 6L laser printer is falling asleep or it's the 5mx which is generating the problem.

"If I understand correctly although there are some areas of great strength in PocketPC"
We must have crossed our wires here. I was speaking of the HPC which *overall* is the equal of a Psion in terms of available functionality. I thought you also were speaking of the HPC and I commented accordingly. Here's what you wrote:
"My suspicion is that the Jornada line will not be around much longer. The whole Windows CE scene seems to be moving away from clamshell designs which is a real shame.''
and
"The OS for such machines has been superseded by PocketPC 2002 and does not contain the sort of functionality that we are used to."
I assumed by that that it was the functionality of the HPC you were questioning. Perhaps I misunderstood you.
"(I would LOVE to be able to use multi-sheet
spreadsheets) there are some areas where Psion was and is still ahead of the game. I'm thinking particularly of the object embodying capabilities of the EPOC applications."
Object embedding...object emshmedding :) Examples of HPC programs which are better than anything on EPOC: HPCNotes Pro (jotter); ListPro (list-maker); TextMaker (wordprocessor) - all 3 of those include correlating Windows apps too - ; Pocket Artist (graphic viewer, manipulator, painter). I could compile a list of EPOC apps which are better than anything available on the HPC too - so this cuts both ways, and often the relative simplicity of some EPOC apps is itself beneficial, or the app has other benefits which make up for its lack of 'powerful' features. Jotter is a good example of this. I greatly appreciate that it keeps each jotter as a separate file, much like a Data file. Data ia also *excellent*.
"I would certainly be interested in the HP keyboard machines with a revisited OS, the one currently installed doesn't seem quite ideal for use on really small machines, it always looks cluttered."
Fair enough, but I'm gathering from your comments that you haven't spent much time with an HPC. You might be surprised by it - in a good way. I still prefer my 5mx though :)
"PocketPC seems to be much more optimised for small screens and MS seem to have realised the lesson that Palm learned very early on - every pixel counts."
I know what you mean - but I find Pocket PC very *cumbersome* when compared to either EPOC or the HPC (or the Palm).
"Your EPOC was essentially just a wrapper around an EPOC data file. I always used to strip out the data file then remove all the other stuff from the applications area just so I could access the data file directly."
Fascinating. I guess that the 'wrapper' added somewhat to the file size?

Ooops! Sorry for that one Neil. I've tried out so many programs since I got my 5mx - I definitely confused TasMan with another app entirely! I was actually thinking of a program which purported to be a decent *list-maker*, but which was in fact only a simplistic and extremely basic app and which was (probably still is) indeed "greatly inferior to the high quality outliners available on the Palm". I'm truly sorry I confused the two.
BTW, I think that TM has a *lot* of promise. Still, I think it would *greatly* benefit from the addition of a drop-down picklist for quick category/list selection, and (to my mind) TM really should have the ability to create, view and edit task notes or memos. I suppose Agenda's use of embedded Word docs in place of simple notes may be complicating this? Any chance either of these 'wishes' of mine will be added in a future rev?
Once more: I'm sorry for having confused TasMan with that *dreadful* list-maker which shall have to remain forever - unnamed ;)

Thanks for the heads up. I've haven't checked out good old FoxPop much since I stopped writing for them looong ago. I'll have to download that review with Opera and give it a real good read. I'm still dreaming of myList for ER5 :)

So the modem did not switch off and yet still could not pick up the phone to receive the fax? Yikes, not good, not good at all :( I think I'd better scrounge around for that manual after all. I wonder if there's a solution or workaround? Hmmm, I guess you could always wait for the fax call to come in, switch on the modem and select 'Receive fax immediately', instead of 'Wait for fax call', no? Btw, thanks for running that test, Thomas.

If you have access to a PC, try http://www.webshots.com/ they have a little program for windows that lets you manage the PC walpapers and change them daily, hourly etc.
You can download a lot of desktop collections and then convert them to be used on your NetBook.

In fact, at 3:46:25 pm on 19/07/2001 Itamar sent a separate email to all subscribers, entitled: 'Epoc Digest admin update', it included the following text:
"At the same time we would like to update you with a change in the email address of the digest from the above mentioned one to :
&nb
Please make a note of same and if you mentioned the digest on your website, please change the email address there as well."
It was sent to all current subscribers, with the assumption that all new subscribers would only be aware of the above address. The old address has also been regularly monitored and any messages received to the old address have been notified of the address change.
I would've thought with your regular contributions you would have noticed the new address ! <BG>

Certainly there is on my S5c, and I believe the same on MX. It stores all the email messages used by Message Suite. I can't comment on what the S7 does with them.

Hi David,
I have a simpler solution using Macro5, I've remapped the Infra-Red screen button to do a page-down - I can hold the Psion in my left hand with my thumb over the edge screen and tap the the IR button as I need to, which works well for me for single-handed reading (eg. when in the washroom!)

Subject: Using the Psion
Answer to: Ashley Burrows
My Psion is mainly a work tool (hence financed by my Company). My main tool is the Agenda file, in which I use the To-do function extensively to keep lists of clients divided in several product groups. Each Company has got a date to contact them and an attached WORD file in which I make short notes what I discussed with them. Before phoning them I quickly read the notes and am up to date what to discuss with them. The great feature of the To-do list is that if a client is set for today and I did not get around to phoning him, the entry moves always on to the "TODAY" date until I change the date again, and so a constant reminder I still have to phone him. If I don't want a client from a list to appear in the DAY view I cross it out (having set that crossed-out entries do not appear). I use a jotter file as a To-do file that pops up twice a day (10.00 am and 03.00 pm) courtesy to Crontab to tell me what I still have to do in general. I keep several sheet files of sales, prices, etc. as well as to calculate sales and/or purchase prices. I use DATA files to keep general data like bank account numbers and a variety of data I need from time to time. I have a scribble file which will open up with a shortcut, put a date & time stamp and allow me to make notes. I use this for notes during phone calls, meetings, etc, instead of the paper notebooks. Whenever I travel I have the complete database of clients with me copied from Outlook, and use the Psion to receive all incoming emails and faxes forwarded via my Compuserve account. With GPRS this has become considerably cheaper lately in comparison to GSM. I use the Psion also extensively with Route- and Streetplanner, both in the office to check distances and best routes to take as well as in the car with my GPS to follow routes and find addresses in cities. I started with a 3a and via the 3c, 5 and 5MX my main machine is now the S7 with the 5MX used mainly in the car.
For my private life I run my bank accounts on the Psion as well as almost all my emailing, all my data files, addresses, etc., alarms to put out the dustbin etc., a few games and more.
And, last but certainly not least, whenever it is my turn I use it to handle the digest .... <G>.

Marcus,
thank you very much for your information. You're embarrassing me by declaring google as your source ;-).
Thanks too to Eric and all others.
The lack of smartness in Microsofts products: I bought a new mobile, the Siemens ME45 (GPRS and IR). My 5mx can connect to the internet without problems. My WinXP laptop cannot. The Siemens FAQ says: GPRS only via Cable, Infrared means an ordinary CSD connection. My, is this all stupid. Every time I put my phone to IR mode, Windows sees a modem, plug and play..., a serial port is created, and obviously Siemens GPRS software cannot access the mobile anymore. Big companies - small results.
Nevertheless
Cheers,

Peter,
Thanks for the tips. I downloaded and installed the OS last night and, aside from a stupid mistake on my part which meant I had to do it again, it's up and running. The new Opera browser sems to be much better, faster than the old one but it still crashes when searching for "psion" in ebay. Oh well, can't have everything.

Hi Guys,
For Tony Cabot re re-released netBook 158 ROM:

nFTP may very occasionally abort (with an eSock error) while initially connecting to an FTP server. This will not lose any data in the NetBook, and nFTP may be safely restarted.

Simon, first the 1GB CF card is currently about £500 to £600! May I suggest a 512MB card at a more reasomble £200. I use the one from SanDisk and find that in general my system opens programs stored on the CF about 25% slower, saving data files on the CF are not noticeable slower. If you have lots of money to spend, then Lexar make a 640MB and 1GB pro 24x CF card which would probably be faster than your current 128MB card. It is more the technology of the card that effects the speed and not the capacity.
Just some thoughts about PDF
I have been playing with the PDF print to file driver from mBrainSoftware: www.mbrainsoftware.com and believe that this will solve the problem of sending compatable files by e-mail. I print my Word document as a PDF file, attach and send that. Since there are PDF viewers for all platforms this solves my conversion problem. If the file is for read purposes only then there should be no problems. If you want to send a file for editing then additional PDF software would be required. I suggest that this is a viable alternative to nConvert. You can use the beta version till October.

What is GNUPOC?
From the main site at http://gnupoc.sourceforge.net : "GnuPoc makes it possible to develop EPOC applications on your GNU/Linux machine. It is using GNU make, Wine and GCC crosscompiler for ARM. Because of the EPOC SDK license we are not allowed to redistribute it, but you can apply the diff if you already have the SDK. The aim of this project is to make a complete EPOC SDK for Linux, any architecture, with full debugging and which is released under GPL."
This is a very impressive project. Impressive enough for me to register a domain name and setup a mirror site in the US at:
