Subject: Modem in France / Win CE / coupling a fax to a GSM
Hello group,
Re: Modem woes in France (for Nigel Elbourne)
Nigel, I also connect my Dutch 56k6 Trust external modem with a cable with an RJ11 connector into a French connector into the French telephone socket. On the Psion side I also use the PsiWin cable, the null modem adapter and the modem cable. The whole thing works fine! However, I also use a Psion Infrared Travel Modem (with the same telephone connector) and that one needs to be specifically set to 'France', according to its instructions. On the other hand: I tried it with its UK settings (just to see the results) and that worked fine as well!
So I'd expect it has something to do with your Internet Service Provider. Theoretically, it would be possible that if you _really_ live in the
sticks, your FT line would not give you access to the new nationwide 0866 numbers (I am assuming you use a French provider).
Which ISP are you using? What are the exact symptoms of your problem?
Otherwise, if you think this might become a complicated story, contact me off-line, we'll check the ISP details and we'll come back to the list with a summary.
Re: Win CE
I fully agree with Arent that the 'new' HPC's from HP might be just wat I need. Win CE has well evolved, be it that other Win CE users need to reset (but without data loss) much more often than you do. One doubt though: the PDA market seems to shift from real PDA's to smartphones (which are too small and often too limited to my likings). And to that: Microsoft showed a keen interest (too keen!) for the 5T (TouTe TableTTE) form factor. The new 728 is a good sign, but I am afraid that in a few months the HPC form factor will definitively be killed. What are your opinions on that, Arent?
Coupling a fax to GSM
In the discussions on fax and GSM technology it was explained to us (by Rolf I think) that the GSM network automatically a specific 'translation' and thus a specific modem bank for speech, fax or data. What I want to
know: does the fax emitting device (in our case our Psion) need to adjust its 'protocol' (or whatever it is called) to the GSM or doesn't it need to care whether it is talking to a GSM or a normal phone line? I am asking this, because I am currently engaged in a discussion on the Internet from people who want to couple a real fax machine to a GSM by simple just let it emit it beeps and squawks to the GSM's microphone. No go, me thinks, not even if they get rid of the problem that there is a lot of interference between the fax speaker and the GSM's microphone. I think the GSM will interpret these beeps as 'speech' and everything will go wrong.
What do you think about this?

Which settings do you use? Which provider? How far does it go? Do you get a connection? What message do you get?
I use Psion infrared modem to connect anywhere (England, France, USA...) with my Revo and it always works very well.

Re: MC218&web-hyperlink
I don't know wether my previuos posting has already given you a hint how to link an URL to your Ericsson's Internet application. I have hardly any experience with Assistant but I think you would have to contact Mario Collado to make a software change to his app. The other possibility is the macro Translauncher with has the same function as far as hyperlinks go but which comes with its source code. There is a special part in the code which is intended for the individual setup to the user's needs and apps. There you can choose your preferred browser (default is psion's, opera is also an option but you should be able to set it up for your Ericsson, giving the full path name). The macro is originally in German, I'm not sure whether there is an Englsh version. Anyway, the configuration part is easy to find (between #####-lines or so) and the path with .../opera.app is clearly recognizable.
Good luck,

Principally, easy navigation between multiple 1 - 3 paragraph notes.
i.e. the key advantage Jotter has over word for /small/ notes is the list browser, and the 'sort' function.

The draft is currently on-line on the new SymbianOS / EPOC Wiki at:
http://html.dnsalias.net:1122/HowToRunEPOCOnWin9x
For those of you unfamiliar with Wikis, they are like web-sites where /any/ person visiting the site can edit any page just by clicking on the 'EditPage' hyperlink at the foot of every web- page, or create a new page just by referring to it by name,
e.g.adding the word 'NewPage' into the text of an existing
page would _automatically_create a new page called
'NewPage', andf a link to it from the existing page.
So any person who knows a little or a lot, can very quickly
and easily add in more material, new pages, or correct errors on the existing pages.
It's a lot easier to do than to explain! So please visit the SymbianOS/Epoc Wiki - http://html.dnsalias.net:1122
p.s. I'm quite chuffed with the logo I created for it last night.
So please feel free to visit even just to critique the logo!

You can use the excellent mbmview (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/
homepages/platodva/psion.htm) on the Psion itself - sorry for long URL.
It won't do PNG files which is a shame but almost anything else. Mind
you I don't believe that there is any other Psion apps that will show
PNG files, certainly not Opera as I tried them in some HTML previously.
There is a desktop graphics viewer called xnview (http://www.xnview.com
/) that runs on Windows/Linux/Unix/Atari/BeOs/OS2/DOS and, I believe,
supports mbm files and Series 3 bitmaps. I doubt it would support
Sketch files though.

Nigel,
if my memory serves me well, the RJ11 plugs for the UK and France are wired slightly different: Whilst in France the two inner wires of the RJ11 connector (on the phone [resp. modem] side) are used to connect the phone line, in the UK the two OUTER wires are used. (I don't know why, but, well, they also drive on the other side of the road :-)) Most French phone wall plugs I've seen can be easily disassembled and re-wired internally using a small screwdriver, so you might try this before spending your money on another modem.
Hope that helps

Although not a lurker, it's been so long since I last posted anything that I feel like one!
I'm looking for any experienced OPL or C++ programmers who would be prepared to do some sub-contracting work writing some database, comms and graphics modules for the netpad. I estimate approximately a weeks work including documentation and help files.
My company is due to deliver netpads to an important client against extremely tight deadlines and although we are developing an in-house capability, this approach may be a quicker solution. I'd need the modules before mid-Dec 02.
I can assure any interested parties that this is
a. entirely legal and above board
b. not a complex application; and
c. a genuine request.
Obviously a full spec will be provided and costs would have to be negotiated, so come on, Alan Richey, Steve Litchfield, Eric Sebban, Malcolm Bryant, Daniel Pfund, Ben Thornton et al (and all others who have some spare timeand are interested!) How about it?
Thanks,

Howdy!
Guillaume wrote (> ):
> Strangely in the 5mxPRO I can use a CF without

It seems to me that the switch for your CF door is broken. Until you can get it repaired, I suggest you always close all applications AND soft reset the Psion before removing a card AND soft reset it again immediately after inserting a card or after removing one if you don't intend to insert another.
If you don't do this, you may risk both file corruption and permanent damage to the card or your Psion. Removing a CF card without the switch telling the Psion that the slot is open is equivalent to yanking a hard disk out of a desktop PC while the machine is running!
If I were in your shoes, I'd probably have a look inside to see if there is anything mechanically preventing the switch from operating. As far as I remember, the CF door pushes the switch in when it is closed and releases it when it is opened. (Just like a fridge door... :o) This would imply that your switch is intact and there is something preventing it from being released.
If the switch was broken, had a faulty contact or was missing, your CF wouldn't work at all as the Psion would think the door was always open. It is of course possible that the previous owner has superglued the switch in place in order to try to use some CF device that wouldn't fit with the door shut...
> Maybe I could use one of these Bluthooth CF card?...
> Just dreaming :-)
If Psion had just made the CF slot with a different system so that it was possible to have part of a card or a cable sticking out of the slot while it was in use, I am pretty sure we would have had a choice of lots of great add-ons to our Psions, including CD-ROMs, external hard disk interfaces (100 Gb anyone?), ZIP drive interfaces, network cards etc.
I know the CF slot doesn't have the full specs, but I'm pretty sure drivers could be written to do most things if it were only mechanically possible. Some of the hardware, at least the things that were not IDE storage devices would probably have to be Psion specific rather than generic. I'm sure the IDE interface could even cope with BlueTooth if the hardware and drivers were designed for it.
What I've always dreamed of is an interface that would allow me to use the CF at the same time as an external drive or a second CF. It would plug into the CF slot, have a slot for the CF and an interface to connect to CD-ROMs, hard disks PCMCIA cards etc. The closest I have come to this dream peripheral for my Psion is a device called a Toshiba Notebook computer, but it's rather large, heavy and power hungry. It also takes a long time to start up and has a lot of other features I don't really need and the RS-232 connection is rather slow and I can't access the drive directly from the Psion...

Hi everyone!
I am now in Dublin where I arrived on Friday 4th after a 19 hour passage hard on the wind from Ardglass. As there will be at least two other liveaboard boats here and it looks like it will be possible to find work near the marina, I have decided to spend the winter here. I'm at the Dublin City moorings on the Customhouse quay right in the middle of town. Naomi is the little red yacht with a Norwegian ensign. The kettle is always on. (Doesn't Alan Rabbitte live in Dublin?) How about arranging a Psion meeting here?
VISITORS ARE MOST WELCOME!
(Call me on 087 7474173)
Sadly, this means I won't be wintering in Cork as I had originally planned. Maybe I'll rent a motorbike or hop on a bus in a couple of weeks to pop down there and buy Chris and Kevin a beer. I reckon to stop by Cork on my way to the Canaries in the spring though.
PS. Does anyone have a streetmap of Dublin in a Psion compatible format.

Hello fellow Psionists
Following my posting on 21 Sep, I have tried Itamar's suggestion of deleting the mail folder then setting up a new account. Unfortunately I still have the problem of being able to connect to the Internet, but not being able to retrieve the messages from one of my ISP's. The message in the box reads "No messages" although there are many, because I get them on my PC too. I'm stumped (and frustrated because I can't keep up with my emails whilst out and about.
On the positive side, I had to replace my 5mx following a drop (the hinge cracked). I use SmallBase frequently, and it's one of those programs that has to be registered to a particular machine (using the machine ID number). I emailed Eric Sabban to ask for the new code, and he emailed the reply within 12 hours. That's amazing support (particularly as this is the third time I've had to change machine, & he has supplied a new code each time!). Well done, and thanks Eric.

Answer to: Jim Watson-Gove
Re. Jotter - Basically you are right that it does not do that much more or less than WORD. Actually I organised myself with both. In jotter I have a list of things to do, with the first short line of each note as a header and underneath further details. In the list I see the headers only and can quickly choose between the notes, seeing on the right the full details of the choosen note. In WORD you miss the list. I also use the handy macro "scribble". It opens a WORD file called scribble, moves to the end of the file, puts a date and stamp note in the file and allows me to write whatever I want. For example I use it to make short notes of phone calls I make for work, or when people phone me and I have to write things down. It is instead of the notepad I used years ago. The advantage above paper is that it is automatically dated and I can search electronically instead of looking through a complete notebook. Each January I rename the old one and start a new one.
Answer to: Nigel Elbourne
Re. Modem woes - You canot use a standard telephone cable for modems, they need a special modem cable. Your next step is to buy a adaptor from the English plug to the French plug and you will be "in business" again. Or buy a modem cable in France. (Your only Psisin is that it took you this long to send a message).

You're quite right about the Ultras. Still they *do* last a bit longer - at least in my 5mx - than normal Duracells do. Keep in mind that the current jumps in the 5mx when using CF and backlight too. Still not worth the price difference for the Ultras though. I'm paying .50c (cdn) for a pair of Alkaline cells, and though the Ultras can be found for as little as $1.50 (cdn) per pair (when bought in a 10 or 12 pack) that's still *3x* more dough!

I mostly use Duracells, and get 6 weeks use. During the weekday the Psion is on mains power, and I think that about only 4 hours of "on battery" usage occurs during those 6 weeks. When the Psion discards a set of batteries I throw them in a drawer and use them for powering clocks and remote controls - which get years of use out of each one. Consequently I have dozens of half used Duracells, and will not need to buy a battery for a remote control for at least the next 45 years!
We have a "junk" store in Australia called Clints Warehouse. You can get the most amazing things for very very cheap prices - but as always, buyer beware! I bought a pack of 20 AA batteries for $1.50 which is about 52 pence. Since the equiv pack of Duracells would cost me $20 (which is about 7 pounds), I thought "Hey - just how bad can these Chinese batteries be?!". Well, they were worse than I could imagine. I get just one days use out of them - with only 10 minutes of "on battery" usage! So it has not taken me long to get through those 20, and I shall be back to Duracells.
I got to use some silver EverReady batteries at Christmas - and, like the Duracells, they got thrown into the drawer - queuing up for their next requirement sometime in the next decade or two. I noticed last month that ALL of the EverReady's had leaked, whereas NONE of the Duracells have shown any signs of leaking.

Subject: Jotter versus Word / Assistant / modem problems
Jim asked:
>What will Jotter do that Word won't?
My answer is: It's a space saver. I keep all my short notes in Jotter instead of seperate files. Each file occupies not only the bytes that make up the file but at least a complete cluster. If your notes are well below the cluster size of 1 or 2 KB (or even more) and you have many notes, you
will save a remarkable amount of memory.
The other reason is that I try to avoid file names with special characters or spaces. I identify my jotted notes with more or less descriptive headlines which I don't like to double as a file name.
Jan regarding Assistant on the MC218:
Why don't you ask Mario? He should be the best suited person to solve your problem.
Nigel's modem problems in France:
I can think of two reasons why the modem does not work: cableing and electrical characteristics.
- The plug that goes into the modem has four pins but only two leads are used. I know that there are different schemes (only the inner leads, only the outer leads, maybe more). If you can't hear anything from the modem after going off hook (try Comms) then that may be the problem.
- If you can hear a tone but your modem complains "NO DIALTONE" try ATX3 as the init
sequence because the English and the French telephone systems produce different dial or busy
tones. Some modems can be adapted to different locations but the X3 trick should be ok.
BTW, where do you have your house? I'm a little jealous because my wife and me are dreaming
of living the rest of our lives "en Provence". That's impossible for now because we still have to earn the neccessary Euros to do so :-(

Subject: Printing to HP 1200 series with EPOC 5 devices
After many months of frustration with attempts with the Psion IrDA device, I have purchased an IrDA device from Actisys (bought it from Expansys) and it works just fine with the HP1200 series printer! It is Actisys product: ACT-IR100M+.
For any of you who are trying to get the netBook, 5mx, Series 7 and Revo/Mako to print to this printer, this device is all you need. This advice was originally provided to me by fellow digester anthony arrowsmand I thank him for the tip.

4 Euan Mee - converting EPOC multibitmaps to other (web-friendly) image file formats
On the Psion itself - i use Lieuwe de Vries' MBMView ver. 4.12.
This program handles a number of image formats:
* displays picture files (ROM mbms, single/multi bitmaps, Sketch files, application "AIF" icons)
* displays 3rd party Psion files (e.g. SpritEdit, Photo5, RMRart)
* displays PC/web image files (JPG, BMP, GIF, PCX, DCX, and TIFF fax/multipage)
* converts to EPOC MBM/Sketch, BMP, JPG, and GIF only
* converts colour images to grayscale (4, and 16 shades) - tested on 5mx, MC218
* saves in colour also (4, 16, or 256 colours only) - tested on Series 7
* also has a number of slideshow, zoom and area save features.
Last know contact details are as follows:
Email: platodva
Website: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/platodva/psion.htm WELL_WORTH REGISTERUS$25!
Shareware: www.reg.net, ID=2076
or: www.regsoft.com, ID=4245
On the PC, there is the bmconv.exe bundled on the Psiwin CD. This is batch conversion program between Windows and Psion bitmap file formats only (unsure about colour support?). I also recall someone incorporating this into a Windows interface to make it less cumbersome to use - and think this program was called WinPic or some such thing.
Good luck

Euan,
If youre looking for a converter on operable on your EPOC machine then
nConvert seems to be what you're looking for. Its shareware, so you can
test it for a period before registration. From www.neuon.com
FWIW, I use !ChangePsi on my desktop, which is a freeware multi
filetype converter, downloadable from
http://www.mountside.nl/people/gertjan/changepsi/
One minor hitch though, it only runs on the RISC OS, but you can cover
this by installing 'Virtual Acorn' which is a RISC OS emulator onto your
PC. It costs £35 from www.virtualacorn.co.uk
This is one way for a lot of you EPOC heads out there to indulge what I
reckon to be the most user friendly and stable OS on the market.
Installing the emulator also gives you access to a huge amount of time
served and modern day apps. HTH.

Somewhat, in regards as to what the positions and movements of the visible
sky /means/.
But both of them observe the same sky, which contains the same stars, comets, constellations, etc.
I doubt the RO were recommending astrology as a belief system - just a
detailed and informative source of astronomical and geographical info! :-)
