Keith,
Totally off-topic but since you mentioned screensavers for the PC, you might want to check out www.webshots.com. Last time I checked, they have really great action shots (actual photos) of cyclists and their bikes that are used as screensavers.

Dear Epoc Digest,
I don't know the procedures for writing this digest. My name is Randall McLaughlin - I posted a message (or a reply, rather) regarding my use and my comments about the Nokia Communicator 9290.
It was not a commentary about the Psion 7 as it appeared in the most recent Epoc digest. I guess the beginning of the message was cut.
Best Regards,

Anyone had this symptom?
In doodler or sketch, you draw a line somewhat slowly and it just jumps along a line of pixels - the result looks like the cardiogram of a stroke. The MXpro has just been repaired by POS and has been in "normal" use for less than two months so I guess this is not a cable problem. I reset it and recalibrated the monitor - it still happens occasionally. Any ideas? Thanks!

<< A RESTORE to my P5mx has just failed by filling both my C & D disks ... I guess with old files I deleted a while back. Therefore the restore is incomplete >>
Did you chooe the option to re-format the Psion disk at the start of the restore? If not, were both disks completely empty? If not, the restore will simply 'overlay' the file from the backup over the existing files, so any files which have been moved since the backup was taken, will appear in both places, consequently taking up more room.
<< there must be some way to avoid this issue (disks filling with deleted stuff while restoring) >>
This shouldn't happen, provided you don't fall into the trap metioned above. When PsiWin discovers that a file has been deleted, it should save it in the 'arc.00n' directory & delete it from the 'backup' hierarchy.
<< On my PC, I have Arc.001 to Arc.006, but have never bothered to read up on what they are used for. Please can anyone explain? >>
They are used to store previous versions of files which have been modified or deleted.
<< It occurs to me to ask if anyone "out there" knows of a duplicate file finder utility. I have already spotted a number of files that had been moved from one folder to another, and the old copies had been restored. D'Uh.
I have dealt with the ones I have found, but there's probably/certainly yet more. Such a utility would be a real boon >>
Unfortunately, I don't think there is such a utility.
I think your best course of action is to repeat the restore, this time selecting the 'Format Psion disk' option.

Subject: Nokia 6210
A bit off-topic, but since it's clear from the Digest that many Psioneers have a Nokia 6210, can I ask whether anyone else has found this model dodgy for keeping a connection, both for voice and data calls? Mine has had a total of six weeks in the Carphone Warehouse repair shop, and the last time I was there another customer said Nokias were notorious for losing their signal. Even the Carphone Warehouse sales rep said that all phones had weaknesses, and that perhaps with Nokia it was keeping the connection. Any feedback gratefully received.

Subject: Laptop connectivity
Daniel Meyer waxed lyrical about his Sony PCG-SRX41P - can anyone advise on Psion connectivity from small laptops which are often lacking a serial port? The Sony doesn't even have infra-red but if it did, is it possible to use Psiwin over an infrared connection to Windows XP (apologies if this has been discussed before)? I think I have read about port replicators - do these connect to a USB port and does anyone have experience of using one to connect to a Psion? Is purchase of the external CD-ROM and floppy drives compulsory (a mere £350 or so on top of the +/-£1800 basic price tag)? I can't quite see how one could recover from a system wipeout without. Nor how one would install new software.
I'm still interested in the oqo concept though I cannot find any news since the April rash of press releases. It sounds like a possible Psion replacement though how sturdy and reliable a device which is more or less a portable hard drive is has yet to be seen. First availability was mooted for this autumn.
Best wishes, Chris

What would be the best printer to use with a 5MX and/or S7 to travel with and print via infrared port from the Psion ?

Subject: netBook repair
Alan Morris asked "So who can repair these machines?"
POS can only repair the Series 3 and Series 5 machines. Series 7 and netBook repairs can only be done by Psion themselves at this time. POS told me they are trying to negotiate for the right to repair these machines but for the moment they do not have permission from Psion. Psion probably won't let them have the spare parts either!
I think the price of repair at the moment from Psion is a flat fee of £170 - reason why I bought a second Series 7 for £150 rather than repair my original machine.

I made a mistake re the cost of repair of netBooks/Series 7s. Apparently it's £115 which is better than the price I quoted but I picked up a secondhand machine instead of repairing mine as the price was near enought he same. Maybe I was just lucky, but I only paid £300 for my first Series 7 two years ago anyway!

Subject: JOTTER BACKUP / WEB IN 158 /ENCYCLOPEDIA ASTERIXA (OT)
Hi Guys,
For Alan Morris re Jotter backup:
Don't know if it will help to clarify things but the following is an extract of an e-mail from Psion (on a different issue) that I received a few weeks back.
Quote:
Obviously you should be installing PsiWin 2.3.3 if you are using XP or 2000 and 2.3.1 if not but otherwise this should fix the problem.
Unquote.
If the Jotter backup is the only problem you're experiencing with Psiwin then it's probably not worth the effort to try 2.3.1
Re installing Web in Build 158 of the netBook ROM:
Has anyone yet succeeded in installing Web in 158? Whether attempting to install via Psion Install or via a .sis file on the netBook itself, I'm confronted by the message "Comms components TCP/IP missing" These components appear in Add/Remove in 156 so I assumed that I would find them in a file in the System folder and could copy them over to 158. No such luck. Perhaps a "techie" like Trygve could elucidate?
For Philip Adkins-Potter re Asterix (off topic):
No Phil, you are not alone in using Asterix as a reference work. How else would one know about the unsurpassed manoeuvre warfare of the Roman Legions, the shape of Cleopatra's nose or how the British came to drink tea instead of boiling water. Coincidentally, have just finished rereading Goths (my son is a Goth!) and Le Tour de Gaule.

Subject: Latin
Just for your information:
Timeo Danaos et Dona Ferentes, meaning "I fear the Greeks even if they are bearing gifts" comes from Vergil's Aeneid in reference to the Trojan horse "given" by the Greeks to the city of Troy. As the story goes, the priest Laocoon says these words to warn the people of Troy not accept this wooden horse.
Note on "Danaos": though not literally "Greek", refers, I beleive, to the origin and lineage of the Greeks in the story
>>>>>>
It's all Greek to me
Alberto, old friend, my copy of "Asterix the Legionary" says
'TIMEO DANAOS ET DONA FERENTES' - I was told it means 'Beware of
Greeks bearing gifts' though 'Danaos' doesn't actually meam
'Greeks'.

Subject: Sendo dumping MS & licensing Symbian
Hi,
I must admit it's very interesting following the 'smartphone wars'.
Having read the press releases from Sendo & Nokia regarding Sendo's dramatic switch from MS Smartphone 2002 to Symbian, I notice that they do not say what actually caused it (other than a 'strategy' review). I find it difficult to believe they just decided Smartphone 2002 was not good enough, especially at such a late stage in the development (even though we all know Symbian is the better platform <G>). It sounds more like some politics or 'dirty dealing' has been going on. Does anyone know what actually happened?
Facts or opinions are welcome but please be clear which you are giving.
