Subject: USB GIrBIL and EPOC Release 5

I bought a USB GIrBIL a couple of days ago due to the fact that I use aSeries 7, Revo Plus and Series 5mx and get fed up changing the leads aroundin my one serial port on my Windows XP desktop PC. However, although I canget the PC to communicate with a Psion, I am not able to transfer files viainfrared - a message comes up on the PC telling me that the Psion will notaccept file transfer by infrared. I have tried taking the speed of both downto 19200, but still no luck. I am now getting frustrated as I really want tomake the most of having a wireless connections between my PC and Psions. Hasanyone had this problem and overcome it? I suspect that it's not Windows XPthat's the problem, but maybe ER5? Any help would be most appreciated.

The Siena SSD *will physically* fit into the netBook's RS232 slot, butthat's about it. The reason it doesn't work is because netBook (like allother ER5 devices, 5mx etc..) can't read external drives. That's what Istill love about the Series 3xx line... it's ability to read externaldrives. BTW, the SSD drive works with the 3c/mx models in addition to theSiena.

Hi folks,

Re: 6310i and faxing

To Mike and others: I reported recently that I was able to fax successfullywith my 6310i and 5mx combination.  Well, due to a fault in the phone, Ireceived a replacement, and this one sends the first page *twice* each time, irrespective of modem.  It is a more recent build: if one presses *#0000#one is given this info.  This phone is v 5.10 date 11-09-02.  Does anyonewho has this build have the double fax problem, I wonder. At least I cansend, I suppose :-)

Andrew, thanks very much for that.  I am apparently one of the few whoprefer Opera to Web, but for size reasons would prefer Web on my Mako.  WhenI tried to install (or run? i cannot recall now) about a year ago, I am sureI received a message to the effect that the Mako did not support the Webapplication.  Are you saying that if I go ahead and install, and change thefile properties as above, that Web will actually run on the

Subject: Exporting Contacts using vCard format

Hello!

Can anyone throw light on exporting Contacts database using the inbuiltvCard (.vcf) function on a Revo+?  I exported my entire Contacts databasethis way but failed to import it into Palm's Desktop/Address software (whichlists a vCard format as acceptable, but this has a .vcs extension and not.vcf as in the EPOC Contacts software). Attempting to import a 599k Contactsdatabase containing about 1300 individual contact details causes the PalmAddress Book software to crash, quoting too many entries ! Surely it can'tbe that hard a task...

Also where can I download vCard software to read my original Contacts exportfile?

Any light gratefully received.

While there is an Add/Remove icon (not in color, maybe grayed out) in myEmulator's Control Panel, it doesn't work. I just get a "not found" messagewhen I double-click it. I *think* I have all the wins opx files loaded -everything else works in the Control Panel. Can anyone tell me what, if any, file I'm missing, and/or how to get the Add/Remove function to work?

<< If a reader was after a registered version of software I had paid for, what would the position (both legal and moral) be if I supplied a copy, withreg file, to that reader? >>

From a moral perspective, you may be on safe ground if you've made diligentefforts to contact the author, ..... but

My intellectual property law is a little rusty, but from a purely legalpoint of view, it's just as though you bought an expensive software likeMicrosoft Office and gave it to a friend with the key code  -  whether youcharged or not would not affect the violation of your agreement with thesoftware vendor.

EPOC shareware is not usually produced with a view to making great profitsor with aggressive marketing, but the legal principle is the same.  And evenif the author has died, the rights pass to his estate or heirs.

Contrast the situation where Psion PLC made PsiWin readily available fordownload from their site, expressly intending it to be available to all.

I think the only truly safe course is to make extensive efforts to contactthe authors (including local phone directories etc.), and perhaps request a"blanket" permission to disseminate the software.

Hello

I have made a simple speed test on two machines (P3, P4), it is a C programthat do a piece of LU factorization (operations) and give the time.

With this simple program I'll get the MFLOPS and MIPS.

I have the program C compiled for windows. I can send to you if you want,so you will can measure how fast is it (no all is measured, only a basicspeed).

I certainly agree. But for some the problem remains. I'd tend to trustsubjective sense of morality and justice here. A discussion probably _won't_lead to an agreement as to what is "every" effort to locate..., "reasonable"period of time, and other "commonsense"... ya know...

I agree totally that it's a difficult distinction to make betweenlegality (probably quite clear cut with regard to Shareware cracking)and morality (in this case, flexible enough to become therationalisation we use to get what we want).  I would still maintainthat condoning software cracking is not the solution to deadapplications.  To my mind, the only moral alternative is for the user

to develop a replacement for the beloved application or (where that isbeyond one's abilities) shout loudly about the need for a newapplication.  There is probably just about enough expertise in the EPOCcommunity that applications may be developed to fill a real need ifsufficient people are interested.

At the end of the day though, there may be no alternative but to moveon.  I felt a lot of sympathy for Philip S. Adkins Potter with regard

to trying to get in touch with Mark Esposito.  I really liked thepotential of NotePad Deluxe for the EPOC machines but it just seemed tofade away as an almost complete application.  It took a long time to

get any indication from Mark that it probably wouldn't develop any morebut the web site still promises great things for 1999!  Mark's responseto me was that financially things did not work out very well and uptakeof the application was very low and there was therefore little reason

to continue development.

For a long time now I've been a great fan of TextGroup and it waspractically the first application I registered for my Series5 way backwhen.  For the last few years I've tried to contact David Spooner quitea few times to discuss future development but there have never been anyreplies.  My view on this now is that I either have to live with quirksand niggles of the program or just continue to look for an alternative.

Much of this is just a side effect of the (relatively) poor penetrationof Psion and the associated lack of return on shareware compounded byPsion withdrawal from the consumer market.  Think how few people of thepeople you know use a Psion.  Now think what proportion of them haveever tried any application other than the in-built ones.  We are at oneend (the geek end) of the Gaussian distribution of shareware use.  Ireckon that for many of the shareware developers it was a labour of

love and a chance to play with new toys rather than a valuable incomeand almost all of them have moved on now.  Think how rare it is to seean application updated (or even a new application released for ER5)compared to the days when the Psion newsletters and web sites containedloads of updates every day.  Those days are gone, this problem is goingto get worse rather than better.

Steve Hodgson

I'd support that - and I'd say that if the rights

owner reappeared and made it possible to pay the regular

price for the product, I'd expect to make that payment.

But if they reappeared and said I should just stop

using it, I think I would say no.

There's at least an argument in law that

the owner can be said to have abandoned the

product and therefore allowed it to enter

the public domain.

I do not reply for MenuS5, but for the other topic: Morality. For MenuS5, Iwill just give few words on it, but I will never try to change your mind, this is what you think and you are free, my work has not the presumption tobe pleasing to everybody.

The only limitation of MenuS5 is the fact that you can't remove or move anentry or rename a page.

I am sorry, but these limitations does not affect in any case how theprogram works. This is a choice, some programers do prefer to give only 15or 30 days, other like me prefer to have a program that's work without timelimitations.

Concerning Morality, you give an example of an Euro or a wallet you find, and I will agree with what you do with it, but I am sorry, in term ofsoftware they are under the COPYRIGHT protection. I can't understand why youwant absolutely to register a software which has been abandonned. If a bookis not available anymore, will you photocopy it to make it available toeverybody?

What you maybe forget, is the fact that even if an author has removed hisweb page, the program is still present somewhere on Internet or on some CDs,so what can he do. Who is stupid, the author that have not been able to makedisappear totally his program, or the user that wants absolutely to registersomething that does not exists anymore? In any case, you have no rights onthis software without the author agreement and the author is not forced toprovide you with maintenance for life, you buy a product and you get it, ifyou discover errors, then the author should do something.

Now that I have read all these topics (Regit, Revtran, etc...) on thisdigest, I really look forward to have retail version of software or code onit.

same cable for all 3 machines. Why do you change the cable ?

Answer to: Philip Carlisle

Re. Shareware & illegal use - I don't think you bought the right withshareware software to pass it on to third people, certainly not againstpayment. The legal situation has been defined clearly in one of the earlierdigests. My personal feeling is that once a software writer has clearlygiven up any interest in and/or support of a certain program, one should beable to pass it on to others. However, that is just my feelings.

Re. ER3/5 programs - I don't think that anyone person by him/herself shouldhandle money like that, and as the people on this digest don't know eachother and live in a variety of countries, it would be hard to set up.
