The way I understand it, you get charged for incoming calls if you are on international roaming and are out of your country of residence.

If someone from your home country, for instance, calls you, his overseas call charges get charged to the roaming phone.  I guess the idea here is if you are overseas and roaming, your callers may not know so you get charged.

Hi all!

After trying for some weeks to register the image viewer sw MBMView (it stops to function after a 30 days trial period), it suddenly appeared to me that I maybe had seen something about problems doing this here on the digest. Maybe I missed somethin, but I did some surfing on the Internet and found a site that seems to indicate (my dutch is not that good) that the author of some nice Psion programs Lieuwe de Vries unfortunately died about a month ago. Can anybody verify this?

Here we may have a concrete example of a case where it probably will be impossible to use the MBMView sw in the future.

Subject: Excellent UK repair service

Just over a week ago something inside my 5mx broke afecting the hinge and

spring mechanism - it clunked, clicked and scraped as I opened and closed

it and it felt in danger of coming apart in my hands.  So, I looked up the

repair process and arranged a repair.

I was impressed by the whole process.  Here's why:

1. I booked and paid for the repair - standard price of £90.00 - on their

website (so no holding on the phone forever) and they gave me an "RMA"

number and the address in Milton Keynes to send the machine to.    Your

supposed to send the machine with the RMA number visible on the outside of

the packaging.

2. I posted it by registered post on Monday and I got it back via UPS on

Thursday lunchtime - very quick I thought.

3. When you book the the repair they gve you a URL via which you can track

the progress of the repair.    By visiting this page repeatedly, I could

see that my package arrived at lunchtime on Tuesday, they'd competed the

repair by 5:10 the same afternoon and they posted it back to me at 10:30

the next morning.  I found this information so good - I knew exactly what

was happening and when I was likely to get my machine back.

4. This is a little thing I know but when I booked the repair and the

website displayed the address I should send it to, that address included my

RMA number.  All I did was to print this to make an address label, with no

risk of transcribing the number incorrectly.

The overall impression was one of speed, efficiency and of keeping the

customer fully informed.

A good service overall, I thought.

Have a look at epocemx (www.windhager.de/~mattes/epocemx/). This is mainly an ER5 C/C++ SDK destined to run on Unix platforms, but it seems that using his SDK, the author has ported the SDK itself, including GCC, to the 5mx. There are a few binary packages available, but unfortunately GCC seems not to be available as a binary package, so you would have to download, compile and install the SDK in order to cross-compile GCC and other required tools for the 5mx. (I haven't yet tried this, due to my limited available time.)

Re: Majority - I don't think you will be able to conclude from this digest what "the majority" thinks. Only a small % of the total number of subscribers is active, and in order to decide what the majority thinks you would have to hold a vote.

Answer to: Kevin Thorne & others

Re. Lost spaces - It might be a problem from an individual operator of the digest. As there will be a change over taking place today, please check the next digests. If it stops, it is the problem with one of the operators, if it continues it might be the digest software. We will try and solve the problem.

Answer to: Toby Butler

Re. series 7vs netbook - The netBook has a faster processor, the OS is in RAM (changeable) and it can handle network cards are the main differences. Another difference is that the netBook is still produced and the S7 not. And finally, the netBook is considerably more expensive. If you don't need the network card, try and find a 2nd hand one or Companies like Clove.

If you want to get only the entries with email addresses (which would make sense for a mailing list), why not sort on the email address column while the data is still in the spreadsheet (either Sheet or Excel will do)?  Then it's easy to just export those.

And just who is to make that call?  Setting aside all the debate on the morality of the issue a number of people have stated that the situation becomes somehow different when developers abandon a product.

To reiterate the above question -- who is to make that call?  Is it a majority decision?  Is it one trusted individual? What happens when a developer turns up again?  As I said in an earlier posting there are many hypothetical reasons why a developer may seem to abandon a product.

My final word on this subject I think.  It would be wrong (morally and legally) to crack shareware simply because a developer has abandoned a product.  No amount of debate here will make it right.

From: Peter Keene

Subject: FOOTNOTES

Hi Guys,

For Toby Butler re footnotes in Word:

As with most things missing in the Epoc apps Toby, there's normally a work around, so yes, you can use footnotes in Word - it just takes a bit of effort, and is a bit limited. You have to use the footer, so if your document is long you'll have to use a new file for each page.

Obviously inserting the footnote number is not a problem - type the digit and then highlight it, press shift+ctrl+f and select "print position... superscript".

To insert the footnote itself got to Menu / File / Printing / page setup.... Select the "Footer" tab and click on "Insert". Then select "Object" and "Sheet." In sheet you'll have to play around with the column, row and text formatting depending on how many footnotes you will have on that page. It's a bit fiddly because you can only see the footer in the print preview. You may also have to play around with the footer alignment, and don't forget to set the footer distance from the margin to 0, otherwise you won't see it in the print preview and it won't print on the page. While in Sheet remember to deselect printing of the grid etc. It's a good idea, once you've got a footnote-footer that works for you, to save the page as a template.

It's fiddly, but it works ;-)

If you really HAVE to have footnotes in your document and you only have the Psion, you can get the job done.

A tip: for long documents name each page's file with its page number and bung the whole lot into a folder with the document's name. I'm sure you know how to sort out the page numbering so that the 'page' files number on from each other, so I won't teach you how to suck eggs.

Another option is to have a paragraph at the end of each page in a Word document, with a different font type and size for your footnotes. However, this would be just as fiddly, with lots of inserting of page breaks, resetting of line spacing, paginating etc.

I think the first option is more practical (as long as your footnote isn't as long as your text, as I've seen in some documents).

I've just realised that it's probably easier to insert a Word object as the footnote-footer. What a silly prat!

I think I'll have a cup of tea now.

Peter

We had a similar problem with the Revo cutting out, not switching on, or not charging, almost at random.  The solution was to open up the back cover, separate the four-pin battery connector, and push it firmly back together again.  Since then it has been good as new.

Have you tried the DIALOG command in OPL?

GLOBAL nr_of_addresses&

GLOBAL line_nr&

dINIT "Enter total number of lines"

dLONG nr_of_addresses&, "Lines:",1, 100000

dBUTTONS "Cancel", -27, "Ok",13

If DIALOG

DO

  Place script commands here...

  line_nr& = line_nr& +1

UNTIL line_nr& = nr_of_addresses&

ENDIF

The 100000 can be replaced with whatever maximum number you want, but the '1' must not be touched because it defines the minimum value that allowed. (giving a '0' would result in the loop running a long time)

Also, this system allows you to cancel the procedure without running the script at all...

If you wish to read more about what OPL can do, I suggest you get hold of the OPLX32.HLP file which is a help file with all the built-in OPL commands.

I think it may be available from 3Lib (3lib.ukonline.co.uk)

My guess is either a goofup in the digest software, or one of the maintainers is running with a bad configuration...

If you look closely, you'll notice that the lost spaces occurs at even distances.

The distance is also 'reset' whenever there's a break in the text, like where someone left an empty line...

This distance is just about the widt of a screen without the toolbar, running on medium zoom level...

Toby Butler asked:

> Secondly can anyonetell me the difference between the net book and the

The main difference is the ROM chip...

The S7 have a ROM module, 16MB RAM(can be expanded to 32MB)runs at 130MHz and can deliver about 450mA to the PCMCIA port. (Not enough to power a wireless LAN card, ISDN modem or whatever)

The netBook have a RAM module only, with a small boot loader in ROM, resulting in 32MB RAM of which 13 is reserved for a ROM image, can take another 32MB RAM module, runs at 190MHz, can deliver 750mA to the PCMCIA port. (The model introduced in September can deliver more, so can power aa lot more devices)

In addition, the IRDa port on the netBook is 'FIR'(Fast InfraRed), capable of 4Mbps, fast enough for IRLan.

It is possible to plug the netBook's RAM module into a S7 and make it behave as a netBook, and even gain the speed increase, but it probably won't deliver an increased power to the PCMCIA port.

(Haven't heard any mention of anyone testing whether it is FIR capable either)

Is the S7 still in production?

Program closed

Program socket error

I can connect OK and receive emails.  I have tried soft resets and variations in the the modems settings.  I am using the latest OS

Subject: Routeplanner "Route summary"

It always bothered me that I could not see anywhere on the screen during a route how much longer and how much further my final destination was.

Today I looked "by mistake" at the route summary and saw to my delight that during the trip it actually does give the time and distance left to final destination and not the original route summary as in the Streetplanner program. That is a great feature, and I wonder why it does not work like that in Streetplanner as well. Maybe in the new Tomtom Cityplanner ?  did anyone buy the new one already ?  If so, any comments ?

Tried this query on comp.sys.psion.apps to no avail so far - perhaps

you guys can help.

I've been coverting some ebooks for my Psion and have run into a

problem

where I would love to find out more about what is going on.

Generally speaking, once I have a text ebook I convert it using the

conversion tools that run on the Psion using command-line utilities.

Most

of the time I use the TCR conversion utility then read the ebooks using

the EBook application.

This time I also converted to Palm doc format *.prc using the MakeDoc

command-line utility to see how the document would look in MobiPocket.

While I can still read the file in EBook, I just get a blank document

in

MobiPocket although the document shows up in the 'library'.

Is there some subtlety in the MobiPocket format that I am unaware of?

Apart from those damn hidden files that really annoy me.

Only you can decide that one.  Some slight improvements but some losses.

Another point is that .SIS files for maps changed.  They have a new proprietary file format that is similar to .ZIP files.  The .SIS file is held within their new file and placed in a Windows temp directory while installing, then gets deleted.  It's been said that the .SIS file can be recovered, but so far I've not had any luck.  Makes it difficult/impossible to install by running on a Psion.
