Can somebody tell me how I can send files to the Palm without the Palm destroying them?

---

You might try installing the sharewhere called "McFile"

"Beaming

Aside from the usual sending and receiving of databases and files using the infrared port, it is possible to work with files contained within the memory card as well. Beaming of files on the memory card is not restricted to any particular file types, so files other than prc/pdb types can be used as well. "

Re. enroute - I have Enroute running on my S7. There is a general problem with installing programs. Try to find the .SIS file on the CD and copy it to the S7 to install it on the S7 itself.

Re. MSWORD on P7 - I use nConvert which converts a WORD file to a read-only Psion WORD file. I don't remember if the S7 itself will do this as well. But why don't you just try it ? When traveling my office in general send me RTF files which are converted by nConvert to Psion WORD files.

Re. S7 - I think the auction sites are the best source for 2nd hand machines. Recently I succeeded in buying a modem card and a memory upgrade from eBay.co.uk. The memory was abt. half price and the modem card just 12 pounds. The English Pro was Clove at www.clove.co.uk, tel 0870-7270037.

Answer to: Benno  Zuure

RE. MochaPPP - Strange. I recently moved to WindowsXP, installed the program and it worked first time without problems. Make sure you choose the right machine (windowsCE even though it is Psion), the right speed and the right COM port (I believe, I am at work). The link on your Psion should be off.

Answer to: Dan Siegel

Re. Multi copies HELP - No, I receive the digest once only. It could be that the database is corrupt. In general please send a message to the digest address with ONLY the word ADMIN in the header and the current operator will handle your problem (but now I suppose he already read your message).

Hi,

Does anyone know of any software for the psion which will perform an action similar to that done by the mail merge function in ms word? Also interested if there is anything enabling direct printing from the psion onto labels.

Hi Tim, I'm not an expert in the Palm area, but I'll try to answer to my best knowledge.

As you know, the Psion is based upon a FAT file structure that consists of individual files. PalmOS is based on VFS (Virtual File System) and has no file structure in the same way as Epoc. If you are familiar with M$ Outlook, you'll know that all emails, attachments etc. are stored in a single file, outlook.pst. I guess PalmOS is managed in a similar way.

However, if the Palm device is expandable, e.g. with a SD card, the card will have a file structure though. With some third party programs you can access and manage the files. Take a look at FileZ (

http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=695889200301202347 56&prodID=9992 ).

Some other links:

http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=695889200301202347 56&prodID=21934

http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=695889200301202347 56&prodID=11416

I don't know if you can beam unrecognised files to the Palm without being destroyed this way. In order for the PalmOS to handle files they must be registered by the OS as MIME types (much in the same way Epoc uses file recognisers).

Tim,

The Palm doesn't actually delete the file - it just won't accept a file that doesn't have Palm creator ID. If all you are trying to do I get a file from your Psion to a Mac, won't backing up your Psion to the Mac accomplish this? Alternately, are there no flash card readers available for the Mac?

Hi Dan,

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. Unfortunately there isn't much I can do about it.

The problem is that when the Digest is sent out we loose connection to your providers mail server with a "timed out" message. As the system keeps trying to send the email it seems that some of them obviously gets through, resulting in multiple copies in your inbox.

Please contact your provider to see if there are any problems and have them to solve it (it indicates that the problem lies at your provider).

As expressed above each time i synchronize my revo plus with the Microsoft

Outlook it duplicates contacts, entries, adn it displays a sign that tells

that there are some missing items either onthe Revo or in the PC, so  if

press the yes option it would delete the missing items on the machine, with

th emissing items, but it nevers end up the operation. Maybe there it´s an

small patch or program that can help me, i´ll be glad to listen to your

Hi Guys,

For Gary re netBook ruggedness:

I can vouch for the ruggedness of the netBook Gary. The worst thing I've ever done to mine was to knock it (open) off a waist-high desk onto a carpeted floor. There was no damage whatsoever.

For Itamar re entry limit in Jotter:

Yep Itamar, there is a limit to the length of entries in Jotter as I discovered much to my chagrin last month. I can't tell you exactly how many characters it is but at a guess it was at about 500 - 600 words.

For Tom R re MS Word on P7:

The ER5 ROM has an MS Word converter Tom so, yes, you can read MS Word docs on your S7 without any additional app or utility. It gives you a read-only file but if you select all and then copy the text into an EPOC Word document you can work on it. Of course if you want to send it back to a PC you'll have to use nConvert or PsiWin.

Mine came with a cable and Windows software in the box.  EPOC software off the web.  You will need a null modem adapter for use with a Psion, but plugs into a normal serial port.  If like me you use a GPS, the supplied cable fits in place of the GPS.

What OS are you using on your PC's? Another user said he used to have the same problem as me, but has had no more problems since he changed his WindoZe version from 98 to XP. I'm using 98 second edition on my bronze age Toshiba. Apparently, XP uses a different filing system from 98.

> Note taking - You just gave me an idea. We have each year an exhibition in Cologne in March where I need to make notes about each visit of (potential) clients. Instead of just in WORD I could do it in a jotter file with an entry for each client. Is there a maximum no. of letters per entry in jotter ? If so, I can put the discussions in an attached word file. <

Hi Itamar,

Yes, there is a maximum of letters per entry of approximately 8300 bytes. However, you can insert a Word object just a few bytes before you reach the limit (it MUST be before reaching the limit) to have unlimited size.

I find the idea very good and interesting. With some creative thinking you can actually use the built-in applications in a clever way without having to spend a fortune on third party applications.

Sorry , no elist ( yet ) but there is a great Webboard at :

http://www1.alphasmart.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?category=3

Give it a shot !

Last week I had the opportunity to give the Dana a brief spin on the

Nederlandsche Onderwijs Tentoonstelling , held at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht

My verdict :

The keyboard is superb ( see ratings for PDA/HPC keyboards below )

1 Alphasmart Dana

2 PHILIPS Velo 1/500

3 Psion Netbook

4 HP Jornada 680/690/7** series Sharp Classic Zaurus ( 5*** series ) and

Psion S5 series` ( s5/s5mx/mc218 )

The screen is a revelation , especially for older eyes , but requires

decent lighting

Alphaword uses the entire screen

The ability to touch the "on" key and then just type away is what makes

this thing attractive

Yes the size may be an issue , but if one -like me - already got past the

vast size of an USR Courier V Everything dialup modem and a ZyXEL P652

ADSL ditto  , this is not an issue

It is however very light-weight and quite durable

Gotchas :

Mac/Unix connectivity limited ( comparable to psion ) full connectivity on

Mac/Unix requires VirtualPC/VMware/Wine and windows

I spoke with Mr Dirk Foch ( who is in charge of Alphasmart's european

operations ) about the Dana , and while speaking  he pulled his from his

backpack and compared it to the one at the show

Both had the same firmware revision on it ( 1.01 )

There are some freeware Telnet/terminal programs for it . so you could

access sailor.lib.md.us on it

Exactly, being willing to sell a device to other users than the very narrow target market is not the same as marketing it to others.

It's quite possible that the early WinCE clamshell devices with their unstable OS and limited applications actually contributed to the demise of Psion. A lot of people who've seen me use my Psions assumed they were CE devices.

In a surprising number of cases people have bought Psions as a direct result of seeing me using one. These people include my mother, my sister, several friends, workmates and an ex boss. Sadly, these days I have to tell people that the machine is discontinued.

Yes, but it's been my experience that in many cases they have no idea what the device is capable of, often thinking it's little more than a more expensive version of those 10 quid personal organisers you get for free when you sign up with a book club.

> Recommendations only work when the interest in

This is not always the case. As I said, I've been responsible for quite a few people buying Psions. The one application that has probably sold more Psions than any other is PhoneMan. Unfortunately, with the huge variety of phones on the market, it has become impossible for Xenobyte to keep it compatible with the more advanced ones.
