Dear Itamar,
<< I actually installed it on my S7 without taking out the batteries. Was this incorrect and am I lucky that my S7 survived or is it not really necessary to take the batteries out ? >>
Each an every manufacturer will write in the manual that the device needs to be unpowered when circuit boards are exchanged or added. Meaning batteries have to be removed and the device unplugged from mains The manual will also refer to ESD (electrostatic discharge) measures that have to be taken. Don't comply with these rules and your warranty becomes null and void. Doesn't matter whether the job is a high or low risk one. Only those who know the electronic design of the device like the back of their hands can afford to take shortcuts.

Dear Maria,
<< Yes, our US mobile phone system IS a complex world! >>
It's actually quite simple - there's no system in the "US mobile phone system". Which has more to do with US politics than technology.
<< Au contraire, my friend! >>
I'm afraid you have to trust me on this, Maria. I've been active in this field (Psion plus mobile phone) for such a long time that I know my GSMs from my CDMAs.
<< However, there are now plenty of tri-band phones in the USA, presumably designed for the US market, considering they work on our band (we're the band that necessitates the "tri") >>
I've used a single-band, single-mode Ericsson CA638 in the US for infrared data communication with my Psion Series 5 about five years before you bought your tri-band phone. This to illustrate that it's not a necessity for people in the US to buy a tri-band GSM phone. It's when you travel abroad that a dual- or tri-band phone becomes interesting. Though it can be more economical to buy a pre-pay phone in Europe.
<< When I land on your lovely continent, I merely turn on the phone and switch over to YOUR lovely bands, and Bob's your uncle, as many Psionists would say >>
That's not a given as this depends on a roaming agreement between your home network operator and the operator(s) in the country you visit. And it's possible hat the agreement includes voice and SMS but not data and fax so that you're still limited in what you can do.
<< This indicates that you didn't finish reading that quote from the travel guy! He points out that T-Mobile is unique in providing that service for free... >>
I don't read messages partially. It's simply that the price subsidy is the carrot and the operator lock the stick. It doesn't make sense to operator lock phones when the lock can be removed for free. The whole lock/unlock thing is an administrative hassle T-mobile can do without. It also makes T-mobile vulnerable to tariff changes by its competitors and by unscrupulous people selling the the phone at a profit, leaving T-mobile with an uncollectable debt. I therefore have some doubts about the unlocking being truly free.

Subject: re: Mako turns off w/ 80% charge
In response to the Mako turning off prematurely (80%), it is highly likely that the batteries are improperly charged. This happens over time if you disconnect immediately upon hitting 100% on the charge meter.
Do the following to correct:
1) Allow the machine to drain as low as it will go (turn auto-switchoff off!)
2) Connect the power adapter to the rear of the machine and power on
3) Charge until the battery icon in the toolbar stops animating
**The machine will hit 100% long before this stops, keep going as it will be in trickle charge and will not overcharge the batts. Follow these charge procedures each time, and you will be ready to go with a properly charged Mako.
Hope this helps.

You can but only Word, Sketch and Voice Note are on th main Agenda menu
(at least on my netBook). Sheet gets added to the list if you open an
entry then bring up the full details (ctrlt + A on the netBook, ctrl +
M on the Revo I think) and click the Object button on the Text tab.
Strangely Sheet files don't show up as icons be default but as the
entire sheet! To ghet round this you have to select the embedded
object, click the format button, then select Display as Icon. All a
bit long-winded but it's there.
Once the Sheet file is embedded it can be launched in the normal way.

Subject: 1GB CF card or 1GB IBM microdrive?
<what's the advantages/disadvantages of using a 1GB IBM microdrive and a 1GB CF eXpansys? (aside from cost).>
I don't think there are any advantages, except for the large pounds per megabyte cost difference. One disadvantage of using the Microdrive is it won't work in the "E" drive of a S7 (but it's fine in the same slot in a netBook) because the S7 cannot supply it with enough power to work. Another disadvantage is by nature the Microdrive is a mechanical drive and therefore consumes more power than a CF card. However, it's not too power hungry - certainly a lot better than a PC card modem. I get around 6½ hours from it on one full charge.
<i have the impression that when one access (ie read/write) the1 GB IBM microdrive in e: it produces a "whirling" sound like when one accessess a desktop's CPU. is this true?>
Yes, it does whirr a bit but it's not intrusive. It also takes a few seconds to spin up to speed so your netBook won't be quite as "instant on" as it would by using a CF card.

hello everyone!
in the original cf card that came with my netBook is a file called os.img (i know this is the os), and a folder name "DATA" within it is a file called "version_156_UK". is it safe to delete the folder "DATA" and the file within it (version_156_UK)? the size of this file is 0.
just wondering, the os.img is an essential file for the netBook for without it the netBook won't work (after hard reset, ie). how come this file is not set to "Read only" to prevent anyone from modifying/deleting this file?
is it safe for me to set the attributes of the file os.img to "Read only" and "Hidden" to prevent myself from deleting this file accidentally?
i have copied the original cf that came with the netBook to a spare 32mb cf, where it now sits with all my documents. i never use the c: to store files/documents, even on S5 (a lesson i learned from my s3a days). i only use the c: in working on a file. i copy the file from d: transfer it to c: edit the file and save it back to d:

This is with Telstra in Australia. I have used the resources of Mike McConnell's site and contacted Telstra (who don't know what a Psion is but gave the settings for a Pocket PC).
Error on S7, after it seems to make the IR connection but it doesn't try to connect to GPRS service, is;

I have tried with and without the Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0 (do I need this installed?)

Hi there,
I thought I'd upgrade my copy of Mentor on my netBook, but kept getting "Program: Installer Reason Code: USER Reason Number: 21" when I selected the Mentor.sis file, I had been getting that error when trying to reinstall RMRZip.
I thought I'd check the Control Panel Add/Remove icon to see if there were any programs causing problems, but when I selected the icon and pressed Enter, all I got was a blank white screen.
Luckily a soft reset (why is it that you can never find a paper clip when you need one?) got me working again, and I don't appear to have lost any data.
Has anyone any idea why I'm getting that error (I think it might happen with other .sis files), and why my Add/Remove icon causes problems?
All the best,

Subject: XJmail Review
Itamar,
As requested, here are my experiences with XJMail.
Last year, as an anti-spam measure, my ISP (Totalise) introduced SMTP authentication. This left me unable to send mails from my 5mx, as Psions email does not support this feature. I did consider changing ISP, but it seems that many other ISPs are now following the same path.
On a recent epoc digest I noticed a reference to XJMail and decided to give it a try.
http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~ktkawabe/densha e.html
The program is designed mainly for Japanese users, but an English version is available. The program is free to use and distribute, with the exact terms being included in the main zip file. Installation involves installing the main program, a text editor (link provided to Symbians text editor from the above site), a Japanese font module and any other add ons that you require. I chose the add ons for SMTP authentication and one to add attachments. It should be noted that the Japanese font is compulsory, even if you (like myself) have no use for it. It takes up 461K of space which may be an issue for Revo / Mako users who do not have access to a CF card. The installation instructions looked a little daunting at first, but they are comprehensive and easy to follow. The absence of a troubleshooting section may cause problems to some.
When I first ran the program, it would pick up mail but crashed when I tried to send. After experimentation I found that this was due to my account name including spaces. When I renamed to a single word, the sending worked like a dream.
I contacted the developer who is going to work on this bug.
The XJMail interface is not quite as slick or pretty as the Psion equivalent but is easy to use, and does not take long to adapt to.
The help files are in Japanese, but this obviously reflects the target users.
My experience with XJMail has been very positive, and I would recomend it to anyone having SMTP authentication problems. It is pleasing to know that the product is still being actively developed, unlike Psions own "frozen in time" package.

Andy Ahern

Subject: Virus? OT
Hi
I may have a virus problem and I'm turning to you guys because I know we have a lot of computer competence here. The machine is a Toshiba Satellite 4090XCDT laptop which I have just bought. It runs WindoZe 2000. Every now and then when I boot the machine, the mouse cursor will bounce very quickly all around the screen, often moving the toolbar around or dragging it up to make it fill half the screen. The only way out of it is to shut down WindoZe which is not easy as the spurious mouse clicks keep canceling out my keyboard clicks. If I reboot the machine with f8 and go back to the previous good configuration, it's usually fine for a while. Has anyone come across this behaviour, or more importantly, a cure for it?
(Offlist replies please.)
I wish my EPOC palmtops could store and edit my photographs, rip MP3 files from CD's and run my navigation software so I didn't have to mess around with bloody WindoZe!
While I have your attention. I have a 13Gig PCMCIA external hard-disk. According to WindoZe, what is inside the box is actually a Maxtor 91728D8. Anyone know whether this is a standard disk as used in desktop PC's and if so what 40 - 80 Gb drives I could expect to work in the same box?
(Offlist replies please.)

Subject: Backup Files Time Stamp / Custom Format CF
Hello all,
after a re-format of my CF card, I copied the files directly from the PC backup to the CF via a CF card reader. However, next backup, the Psion still wants to perform a complete backup = 202 min.
It turns out, the files on the PC have a time stamp one hour different from the files on the CF card. This is strange, as I just copied the files from the PC to the card. The clocks on the PC and on the Psion are the same, Psion and PC daylight savings time are off. Does anyone of you have an explanation? Can I perform the copy action differently such that the dates are retained? (Also, the folders on the CF have a "new" creation date while the folders of the backup are "old".)
I did the re-format of the CF because it was too slow. The free demo of the "Paragon Partition Manager" (http://www.partition-manager.com/) can format the CF for you if you have a CF card reader for the PC. You can define cluster size, number of root entries, ... The formatting went a little strange - ended with an internal error message and I had to remove the card before the PC recognized the new format - but eventually it worked. This improved my write speed to D: five fold (from 10.3 sec. with 2 kB/cluster to 1.8 sec. with 32 kB/cluster - measured with DiskBench).
... and this is a German 5mx16MB and Win98 on the other side.
Thanks to Martin Guthrie for the excellent info page on Pscience5.net !

Hi.
My Mako just crashed! I was downloading e-mail and suddenly got the very useful message "Corrupt" and was chucked off the net. After that, I got the same message when trying to look at any of the local folders in Email. I could still access other stuff on the computer, so in an effort to hopefully clear the problem, I went to the Control Panel and ran the "Restart" application to perform a soft reset. The machine reset and came up with the password screen without my owner information and now the whole of C is corrupt and all applications except the built in ones are gone from the Extras bar. I assume the only way out is a hard reset. :o(

Answer to Owen
I think you may be reading my announcement in the wrong light. I am not trying to compete with the big Psion apps. My message was simply to advise any potential or existing users of my freeware program (FreeNote), that a new version has been released.
To give you a little background to the program, FreeNote was developed originally for the Psion S3a/3c/3mx in October 1999 and was distributed on the Palmtop/3-Lib CD. When the Series 5 was introduced, I ported it to EPOC32. Over the years, FreeNote has been gradually improved, and new features added, with the feedback and help of some interested users.
FreeNote runs on all EPOC32 computers (except Geofox). Depending on what system you have, Psion Jotter may not be available - and even if it is, FreeNote remains a free program to use as well.
The program is easily available from my website - if you think FreeNote may be of use to you, why not download it and give it a try?

Subject: Mapper/Remapper - and WAP
Hi,
REMAPPING
Today I downloaded "Keyboard Mapper" from the Zavorine site (not easy using Psion's Web and possibly other browsers - backslashes and forwardslashes are confused). It seems to be a fine utility but it *doesn't* do the same as "Remapper". It is also not the program I tried - it's far easier to use.
On my Psion the system utility "PsiLoc Pro" can use 2 sets of keyboard definitions, as "Keyboard Mapper", but I have no need of them. "Remapper" redefines the SilkScreen symbols as well, and this is how I use it. It can use 3 different definitions for different ways of using each of the SilkScreen symbols and also has it's own (non-standard} macro system. There are few things but they are important to me.
Cut/Paste becomes Purple's Navigator,
InfraRed becomes Opera,
Contacts becomes iContacts,
Jotter becomes HotKeys,
Sheet becomes Data,
etc..
If you need to redefine keys only (and haven't got PsiLoc Pro) "Keyboard Mapper" is probably what you want - it integrates directly with the system - it is accessible via the Control Panel and also has an app..
"Remapper" doesn't integrate with the system - like "Macro5" (some of whose functions it also duplicates) it has to be running to be used.
If there were a program to do all that "Remapper", Macro5", "HotKeys", "PsiLoc Pro" and "Merlin" do I'd be very happy.
WAP
On another tack, I recently got a (legit) copy of the Psion WAP Browser. What should I do with it!? (Polite suggestions only, please - and I can connect using it and my ISP).
Happy days,
Phil.

Hi Owen,
I do have a mako docking station not in use, since the infamous battery problem caused me to get a Palm unwillingly. I would be glad to let it go for free. You only need to pay whatever the shipping costs (I live in the US). Please contact me off the digest for more details. My email

Subject: Which version of PsiWin am I running
I am trying to get Lotus Organizer v. 5 or 6 to synch with my 5mx. (The version 2.12 I have has a problem with TZBOOKMG.DLL which is no longer available from Lotus.) Before I install the plugin for Organizer 5/6, I need to figure out if I am already running 2.3.1 or 2.3.3. When I check About Psion, it says version 2.3 build 138. So have I got even 2.3.1 installed?
Apparently the plug in works only with 2.3.1 and not 2.3.3. Is there any drawback to using 2.3.1 instead of 2.3.3?
This list has restored by fervor for my 5mx. Thank you benevolent people who manage it. Now if I can only get back to doing what I am supposed to be doing . . . .

Subject: Mako and 5mx on the same PC
I got my wife a Mako on eBay. As she starts to use it, I would like to back it up on my PC. I do not want to mess up the way my 5mx is working now, however. Do I need to use the Mako CD to install that version of PsiWin or is there something I need to do to use what I have for the 5mx without mixing things up? I am sure there are gear collectors out there who have done this as many ways as it can be done. . . . I would appreciate your suggestions.

Subject: Re: Answering the digest
Dear Itamar,
<< But why do you first open a word file to do all your editing and than copy it to an email to edit it again ? >>
I don't - the complete answer is written in Word and copied to Email when finished. This allows me to use Email for other purposes while having an unfinished reply open for writing/editing.
<< Your DATA file must be huge >>
A few megabytes - that's all.
<< I also copy the subject list at the top into a DATA file like you have. If I want to look something up, I open the index file, search for the digests ... >>
You're limited to those messages in which the message text closely matches the subject title. A subject like "A Psion alternative" doesn't tell you what the alternative is that's discussed. I don't have that problem as I can search in the message texts as well as their subject title.

Dear Owen,

I have CF cards ranging from 8Mbyte to 256 MByte - all have been formatted by Atelier's SmartFormat to minimise wasted space and all work in the Series 5, 5mx, 7 and MC218 without any problems.

Dear Robert,
<< Rolf thought the 'with DirecDock' specification might mean it was a CardBus, but the box also says it's a 'PC Card (PCMCIA Type II) - so does that mean it *is* the right type of card? >>
I'm afraid it doesn't as CardBus is an extension of the PC-Card standard, allowing (amongst others) a higher communication speed between card and computer. Type II only says something about the dimensions of the card.
<< If I can establish that the card I've bought is right, then I'll know that the problem is with my settings >>
Difficulty is that the same LAN card can be sold under different brands and model numbers. Planex Communications Inc. can thus be the manufacturer but also the company that resells a card manufactured by XYZ Corp. with its own name and logo on it. Do contact Psion-Teklogix as they know which cards they support and how they might be recognised when sold under a different name.

Dear Michael,
<< They both belong to the Mobile Connectivity Update from Psion. You can move the to the D drive without any harm ... >>
It's not a good idea to move system files to D that have *specifically* been placed in C by the installation tool. Remove the CF card and you run the risk of the system becoming unstable.

Subject: Re: Registering EPOC shareware without a PC
Dear Kevin,
<< ... I'm not sure how many programs can be registered by using Opera (can any?) >>
I think I've bought/registered four or five EPOC applications using a Psion plus Opera. Though I'm not 100% sure as I've use a PC as well as Psion for this purpose. And a year has passed since I added the most recent application to my EPOC stable.
<< So I suppose the question must be how good is Opera at performing secure on-line transactions? >>
The "Quick Start" my copy of Opera V5.14 for EPOC shows after launching mentions the following.
[Quote]
Security - Enjoy safe online shopping and banking with 128-bit encryption, support for SSL 2 and 3 as well as TLS 1.0.
[Unquote]
<< How does the non PC owning S7/netBook/9210 owner go about getting shareware registered when it can only be obtained via secure transactions? >>
Shareware developers tend to mention an e-mail address for questions and technical support. I'd write to the developer, explain the situation, propose a few alternative payment methods the developer can choose from and add that I'm willing to pay a few dollars or pounds extra for the inconvenience.

As owner of four Psions and an MC218 I've regularly tested PsiWin's backup, archive and restore functions when changing device.

Yes, I find the latest phones all seem to be marketed towards teenagers and this why I much prefer my sleek, understated (and underrated) silver 9210 as it's a proper business phone that comes with that lovely warm feeling of familiarity for ex-Psioneers by using EPOC for its o/s (I'm looking forward to Itamar publishing his poll results as I'm dying to know how many 9210 owners are reading this Digest). As a mobile fax solution, it works fine without the dashing around to line up those IR ports between phone and PDA when a fax comes in. I haven't used it very much for sending faxes but when I have done so, they've been fine.
