This is correct behaviour. A backup is a safety copy in case your batteries run down (so that you lose all files) or delete a file you shouldn't have deleted. The restore function is there to get those files back and that's what PsiWin does. It finds that the files "Client 30.1" and "Orders 30.1" are in the backup but not on the Psion and transfers them to the Psion. How is PsiWin to know that what was "Client 30.1" is now called "Client 6.2" and that "Client 30.1" should therefore no longer be restored? It doesn't because PsiWin looks at the files - it doesn't read your mind.

I see there's bee a bit on email and pop servers...

I've always had a problem with my 7 with deleting mail from my POP server (lineone). Deleting mail in the remote folder has no effect - is there a setting I need to change?

On another not, what exactly is the point of fn+space - It seems to brighten and dim the screen - does this actually save much battery power??

Hi Chris,

Thanks to the digest Ive just discovered the PsiWin Organizer plug-in, and yes itworks fine with 2.3.3.

To check which version you have, double-click the My Psion icon, then selectHelp/About, it should tell the version before the build. On mine it says PsiWin2.3.3  Build 149.

Hi Darryl!

Well I'm one of the P800 owners. I have read on P800 user sites on the net that it doesn't support fax.

I tried the command in Comms and as you can see it responses with a 0 wich i assume stands for no fax support.

Command: AT+FCLASS=?

Response: +FCLASS: (0)

A real pity they left out that function.

But it does work with GPRS and Psion! (standard GSM-data also offcourse)

> I got my wife a Mako on eBay. As she starts to use it, I would like to back it up on my PC. I do not want to mess up the way my 5mx is working now, however. Do I need to use the Mako CD to install that version of PsiWin or is there something I need to do to use what I have for the 5mx without mixing things up? I am sure there are gear collectors out there who have done this as many ways as it can be done. . . . I would appreciate your suggestions. <

Hi Chris,

There's no need for worrying. PsiWin can handle the Mako and MC218 just as fine as any Psion machine. At the moment I have a 5mx and S7, and soon I'll also have a netpad. When I registered the machines to PsiWin (PsiWin will detect any new device) I gave them different names as follows: Series 5mx and Series 7.

All stuff from my 5mx goes to C:\Psion\Series 5mx\Backup\... and Synchro All stuff from my S7 goes to C:\Psion\Series 7\Backup\... and Synchro

So all you have to do is to name the Mako differently from your Psion. PsiWin will automagically detect if it's the Psion or the Mako which are currently connected.

Dear Rolf,

To a certain degree I'd say you're right. However, these particular system files are not critical to the overall running of the OS. Only if you've placed them on D and moved the card and then try to communicate via IrDA you might get into trouble. Could also be that the system defaults to use the components in the ROM.

A part of the original question was if the files could be moved to D. I gave an answer and didn't judge if it was a good idea or not. I believe if people do mess around the system components etc., they're supposed to know what they're doing.

OTOH one should perhaps give a warning on special occasions like the above, but again I find it difficult to foresee every possible danger that might occur.

CARE & SAFETY

When used according to the instructions in this manual, the Series 5 should remain in good working order for many years.

-- Psion Series 5mx User Guide, page 175.

Given the numbers of anecdotal reports on the Web of screen-cables failing well before 'many years' have passed, and since the manual doesn't mention any method of preventing, or even minimizing the likelihood of, such a screen-cable failure, does anybody here think that this statement in the User Guide constitutes a False Representation on the part of Psion?

Rolf,

No, I couldn't know that you were accessing the card via Windows 98 since you said and repeated that you were using NT and 95, and never mentioned 98. You also don't mention *now* which version of Windows 98 you are using.

Also, you've attached the card, in its reader, via the parallel port! - the problem arises (going by my own experience and the reports I've read) when the CF card is accessed via a reader sitting directly in a PCMCIA slot built into a laptop running W98SE.

Not *every* variant of Windows provides a choice of formatting options though - I know that Windows 98SE doesn't! That is: W98SE can and will format the CF card, but does not give the user any options about *how* it is done. :( Perhaps from DOS?

That's extremely simple to prove. Buy a brand new Series 5mx and ... never, ever, open it. I'll give you the cast iron guarantee that the screen cable of this 5mx will never fail. <VBG>"

LOL...Cute one, Rolf. I was going to post something similar. I was going to ask Itamar if I had two 5mx's, one opened only once and then left under glass, and one opened and closed 20 times daily, both for ten years - which one would he honestly think would be more likely to be still fully functional - with an unbroken screen cable - after that time.

"It creates another problem, though. One that's similar to a famous thought experiment in quantum physics called 'Schrödinger's Cat'. As the Series 5mx has never been opened you don't know whether the screen cable is functional or defective already. We're therefore dealing with a superposition of states in which the screen cable is *both* functional and defective (at the same time)."

Umm, just open it once when first purchased - now you know it's working. Now leave it. Besides, it either is or is not functional - how can one's doubt about which it is make it both in any material sense? Just last year I thought my friends old car was in the shop for repair - truth is he was driving it to work the entire time - my thinking it was broken couldn't change that it was not.

Zip Master is indeed another *excellent* Zip utility. It is included in Essential System Tools, which also includes the wonderful Smart Find and Recycle Bin. The price for all 3 apps (plus a restart utility) is $30 - the same price as RMRZip alone.

I wholeheartedly agree, Kevin! I bought a few of these cheap coloured styluses also and, assuming we're talking about the same cheap coloured styluses, I can concur that they are the worst garbage styluses I have ever had the displeasure of using! I also received, unfortunately, PalmTec's screen protectors which have large 'tractor tracks' running through them and are extremely hazy and even dirty looking! I've been using WriteRight's and now CompanionLink protectors for years and have been quite happy with them, and I own *many* styluses, cheap and expensive, as well as having a small collection of styluses from various discarded, sold or drawered handhelds and I never would have thought that such inferior protectors or styluses would or could in all conscience be sold by any well-known reseller. For a number of years I've been using my Series 7 as a desktop computer at home. With nConvert, it's been easy to convert incoming/outgoing mails from/to MS-Office format, which is essential for my work.

Lately I've increasingly been getting mails with attachments that the Series 7 can't handle: PowerPoint slides and huge Word documents with embedded charts and graphs. Does anybody know any tricks for converting files in difficult formats to a more Psion-friendly format? How do you deal with attachments that the Psion can't handle?

I have no choice but to deal with these files on a desktop computer (since I have to preserve the original formatting), which means at some point, as much as I enjoy the Series 7, I will probably have to abandon it for a different platform which can handle these various kinds of attachments. (At this point the most interesting replacement candidate is the new keyboard-based Sharp Zaurus SL-C700. There's a review of it by Jeffery Friedman at www.the-gadgeteer.com.)

Here's a useful trick: if you would like to save 460K of space, delete the Japanese font file in 'System/jfonts', and create a new text file and name it 'jiskan.gdr'.

Make sure 'jiskan.gdr' is located in the folder 'System/jfonts'. If you don't need to read Japanese, you'll never know the difference, and save a lot of space to boot. Works for me.

Thanks, Jan, for this remark, especialy for the last sentence ;-). I already thought I am solely thinking about odds and ends.

Do I need to use the Mako CD to install that version of PsiWin or is there something I need to do to use what I have for the 5mx without mixing things up? I am sure there are gear collectors out there who have done this as many ways as it can be done. . . . I would appreciate your suggestions.<<

When you first connect the mako to the PC, PsiWin should ask you for a name for it; this name will be used in the path where the backups are to be stored, so should not interfere with your existing 5mx backup. I use a single copy of PsiWin to backup both a 5mx and a 7 without any problems.

Hope that puts your mind at rest, Ian.

It doesn't make sense to operator lock phones when the lock can be removed for free. The whole lock/unlock thing is an administrative hassle T-mobile can do without. It also makes T-mobile vulnerable to tariff changes by its competitors and by

unscrupulous people selling the the phone at a profit, leaving T-mobile

with an uncollectable debt. I therefore have some doubts about the

unlocking being truly free. <<

Rolf,

most providers will unlock a phone for free after the first year - within the first year there's a charge, which decreases per month until there's

no charge after 12 months. It's quite possible that T-mobile will unlock a phone for free, but only after the 12 months have passed...

Following on from my previous thread concerning sending e-mails using a Psion, my attempts to send from freeler, trying the various tricks mentioned have proved unsuccessful. Is anybody aware of a free/cheap internet provider in Holland via which it is straightforward to send e-mails from a Psion?

Answer to: Andy & Peter (thanks for the tip)

Thanks for the review. I understand that this program will allow to use ISP's with "SMTP authentication". However, you also wrote that the program does not look as "slick" as the Psion email program. The obvious question in _my_ mind is, if you don't need the SMTP authentication, what is the advantage of using XJMAIL above the Psion program ?  What does it do more ?  Will it allow to have two emails open and toggle between them (original email and answer for example) ?

Does anybody have a cheap, cheap CHEAP revo (just the unit itself, no

docking station, no power adaptor no software) for sale?

No problems if it´s scratched, just as long as it works.

I had that same error when I was trying out GPRS with my Mako. I'm not sure what causes it, but a soft reset gets rid of the problem.

Has anyone out there got a broken 5mx or MC218 that might have a working screen? My screen has just failed and I would happily pay for a 'spares' machine if anyone wants to get rid of one.

I also have some revo pointers for sale if anyone needs one.

Re.: Embeddes SHEET - That was me giving the wrong information <G>. It is however indeed strange how deep this possibility is embedded in the system and that you can't just choose it from the menu.

Re. GPRS - You don't write in which country you live and who your ISP is. If SMTP authentication is your problem, did you follow the discussion about XJMAIL ?

Re. FreeNote - I checked your website but cannot find it there. Did you change already the size of the notes or not yet ?

Hi Psionic Morse Enthusiasts,

Owen Morgan was developing a Morse Macro recently. This has inspired and woken up my old Morse knowledge and interest. I digged out an electronic book called "The Art and Skill of radio Telegraphy" from William Pierpont. A great book on how to learn the art of CW Radio Telegraphy, and about it's history. I converted it into a Psion TomeRaider file. If you want to learn Morse, don't miss it.

Subject: Striking through entries on To Do list on 5MX

Hi,

This is my first attempt at sending to the digest so I hope I manage OK.

I have had my 5 a few months now, after not getting on with a palm type pda, and am soon getting a 7book.  Sorry if this question sounds daft but I read somewhere that you can strike through to do list items when they are completed but you want to keep them showing on list.

However I cannot work out how to do this and it is annoying me, is there a way and what do I have to do please anyone? I have looked at all the settings etc under the To Do list menu but nothing makes sense?

Many thanks
