Subject: Broken screencable research

We had 23 answers. 9 people did not have any problems, 5 people had the screen cable replaced within the first year, 7 people within the second year and 3 people within the third year. Of course we cannot prove anything from this small research, but interesting to see that 39% never had the problem and most of those with the problem it occured in the second year. It would appear that certainly more than an average number of machines did develop the screen cable problem which is an unacceptable level for any production model, whether a palmtop, PC, car or anyother product. (23 answers is still close to 10% of the S5 users of this digest, so arguably statistically a valid sample).

I have a leather case that I keep my psion 5mx in. I was wondering why it has credit card sleeves in the case as I thought that the psion should not be kept with bank cards.

What happens to the cards and would you advise keeping credit cards in the same case as my psion?

Martin,

There's a good list of wireless cards at

http://www.isbg00598.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/faqNetworks.htm (in fact the whole site is excellent and well worth a look).  I personally use a Dell TrueMobile 1150 (I got it on Ebay for a good price) and I would recommend going for a Lucent chipset card due to the additional netBook compatibility that they offer.

This was the only place that I found that offered the job. POS said it doesn't work on Makos - maybe I should use PhotoShop, create a RevoPlus label and glue it over the Mako label <G>). D&G has nevere answered my e-mail. As far as I can tell, SonicBlue's support doesn't include repair - at least I couldn't find any reference to it on their site.

Subject: Image viewer for S5mx

Hi!

I would like to read technical documents on my S5mx. Those are postscript and pdf files. Pdf+ is not up to the task (it still misses some character here and there). So the safest solution is to convert the documents to images.

The problem comes with the image viewer. So far the most convenient is MBMView. Converting a ps/pdf file to a multi-image tiff file is easy and MBMView handles it perfectly. This avoids cluttering the CF card with hundreds of files, too. But while going to register I read the sad news about the author and the impossibility of registering.

The other options I've tried deals with MBM and JPEG images. MBM's are big and not very convenient to produce. I was unable to tune GSView to produce acceptable JPEGS (they are either too big or bad

quality). Actually, my options are GIFs (and view them with the web browser) or Sketch. Somehow Sketch images are quite smaller than MBM's, but inconvenient to view due to the absence of zoom and scrollbars.

Is out there another application for viewing multi-image tiff files? GIF's? I saw on twocows a program named GipViewer but PsiWin 2.3.x refuses to install it saying "This version of Epoc Installer can't install Unicode applications" (translated from Spanish).

You can check out EPOCEMX, a GNU C++ port for the Psion. Works under Linux (as a cross compiler) *and* directly under EPOC. I'm currently trying to port a command line FTP to the netBook, but I'm still fighting (those sources are much too "Unixish"). As far as I know, EPOCEMX can be found on Sourceforge.

I'm running an Orinoco Wavelan II (the one that obstructs the stylus slot). Otherwise it works well. I'm running the FTP-Server on my netBook and can access it from my OS/2-PC as a drive letter.

Looks like a corrupt Default template in \System\Templates\Word. Check if there are strange files in this folder (on C/D) and remove the offending ones.

Within Word, use Ctrl-N to create a new document. You can then select the template fro wich the document will be created. You can likewise save a document as a template (File->More).

Put a single space in front of any sub headings

Use a number or letter of the alphabet in front of each To Do

Put a 'Z' in front of any completed entry

You can also expand this to have more than 1 To Do list in a single Jotter file, try using A1 for priority 1 items in To Do list 'A'.

Cant remember codes then expand the prefix by changing the 'A' to a memorable

code for example A1 could be HOME 1 for all priority 1 tasks to do at home.

Use the Jotter sort facility to get all the entries in the correct order.<<

Mike,

you could always try MyNotes, which is a ToDoList/Notetaking program that I've been writing for the last year. Notes can be created having either bullets and/or headings, they can be ticked off or striped out when completed, and there is a powerful sort facility.

I haven't got one of these - but a couple of things spring to mind:

1.  Some of these adaptors have a strange layout of the 'sockets' and whilst some cards go in the right way up and the right way around, other cards need to be upside down etc - in other words maybe try putting the card in the other way up (or other way around) ? 2.  Should you connect the adaptor to the PC before inserting the MMC ?

I recently downloaded the latest version of plBeam and registered it to my Series 7.  Attempts to install the driver in the Control Panel repeatedly crashed the computer.  PsiNT (PSILoc) customer support, when contacted, revealed that "Driver mode is incompatible with the Series 7".  I asked whether they might therefore add my MC218 to the registration.  They did this at once.  Good policy, I'd say.

I had similar problems using v1.30 on my netBook (it used to work fine on my 5mx).  I've switched back to v1.00 on my netBook (needs a hard reset and a restore after uninstalling the app. to clear it out).  It's a slightly more basic version but then the bells and whistles in v1.2-1.3 just irritated me anyway.  More importantly; thus far it seems far more stable on the machine (fingers crossed anyway - I haven't given it anything particularly difficult to do yet!).  I can email you a copy of v1.0 if you're interested.

Subject: Police cameras (UK people only)

Hi all UK readers,

I have been busy over the last year or so to map any police speed cameras I pass by on my traveling when my Psion is connected to the GPS. I have now 267 cameras, mostly within the North-West London area, but also some in different areas of London and highways, mapped. I have used my own specific coding for these cameras (Sp = speed, Tl = traffic light and Bus = bus lane). Below you will find a sample of the listing which I transfered form the OVR file to a text file with the program "Makeover" :

-0.25774,51.55243,"Sp-e"

-0.25987,51.55197,"Tl-w"

-0.26399,51.54843,"Sp-ne"

-0.27724,51.54034,"Sp-ne"

-0.29267,51.53046,"Tl-s"

-0.29151,51.52170,"Sp-n&s"

-0.29134,51.51748,"Tl-s"

-0.29757,51.51341,"Bus-e"

Is anyone interested and/or prepared to add to my list  with cameras anywhere in the UK ? You can gather the details with Route- and/or Streetplanner, but also with any GPS. All we need really is the longitude and latitude of the camera, the type and the direction. In return you will receive (ir)regular updates of the file which you can use in your own programs. For further details or information contact me "off list".

Your supposing too much here, Itamar. The people who's Series 5(mx) screen cable hasn't failed have no reason to be dissatisfied with it. Nor is it a given that the people who's Series 5(mx) screen cable has failed are dissatisfied.

This won't give you the data that allows you come to any satisfactory conclusion as you have to collect data on *all* Series 5(mx) machines. You can't say anything when you only collect data on the Series 5(mx) machines with a failed screen cable. I've had a look at the Series 5mx manual and can't find anything that can be interpreted as misleading or constitutes a false representation. The manual fulfils the documentation requirements as mentioned in the CE regulations, for example. And the sentence you quote from manual says that the Series 5 *should* remain in good working order for many years rather that *will* remain in good working order. It's therefore not an absolute guarantee as no company is able to supply such a guarantee.

Life expectancy calculations are based on statistical averages and the way a typical owner will use a Series 5. The statistics allow a number of devices to fail (much) earlier than life expectancy calculations indicate. There will also be a number that will fail (much) later, however. Though you can supply the information on how to calculate the life expectancy of a Series 5(mx) it's not something the average Psion owner will be able to do something with. What manufacturers do instead is to supply a few general recommendations or a few general Do's and Don'ts.

That's three questions in a row:

It fills a gap when your mobile phone doesn't have a WAP browser or can be used as an alternative to your phone's WAP browser. The advantage is that you can get a complete WAP page on-screen without having to scroll as the screen of a Psion is larger than that of a mobile phone. And there are several WAP sites that allow you get the same information as found on web sites but without the additional clutter and lengthy downloads. << i think if psion were more affordable and have the expertise of marketing abilities as that of Microsoft we'll have subscribers belonging to all age groups >>

I doubt it as a handheld computer needs to fit into your daily activities. A handheld computer looses the competition with such portable electronics as the mobile phone, walkman/diskman and the MP3 player for the younger generation. The 15-25 age group in the Netherlands spends €75.= on average each month in call and SMS charges, for example. Which indicates the role the mobile phone has in their lives. The situation for (university) students is that they have to spend a sizeable amount on books, tuition fees and lodgings. It's difficult to justify the purchase of a handheld computer when you can store contacts and appointments on your mobile phone. While pen and paper is less expensive and more flexible for making lecture notes. I think it's easier for a student to justify the purchase of a desktop or laptop computer as they tie into the university's ICT systems with less of a hassle.

Then there's the aspect of time. Owning a Psion is one thing, participating on the Digest is another. Many people's interest in Psions simply isn't that strong. They own a useful tool and that's it. And there are phases in your life that you have to spend more time on other things - like starting a family and building up your career.

Most have the same experience with Orange.  Come to think of it, most companies are much the same.

<< I told her that since swapping the SIM card and waiting for the update to be sent, said that it was perfectly normal that the reception indicator would show zero signal strength until the SIM update had been received.  >>

Andy the display you call a signal strength display is not a true signal strength display.

When I got my first cell phone (well known as a 'house brick' at the time) in 1987, I was puzzled by that display, as it was not what I expected, having true signal strength displays on my ham radios.  The display is also 'slugged' so that small rapid changes are not shown, this gives the impression that the received signal is better than it is.

The display goes up & down even when not moving, so the signal strength is not changing.  Cell phone base stations vary the transmitted power depending on the strength of your signal that it receives when you have a call in progress.  Also there is a kind of beacon being transmitted that provides information like a free channel slot being available for you to use.  So it could send a text signal to you, while there was no spare capacity for you to originate a call.

Having said that, it's way beyond the ability of the average Orange person to understand.

.... and to add to my first comment: how does the OS know that you decided to delete a file or that it was a mistake you made in deleting it.  It will keep a copy of both.

That's why PsiWin works as it does.
