Subject: Pocket Reader <> 5mx link not working properly
I have a recently acquired Siemens Pocket Reader handheld scanner. It successfully sends data to my PC via the Siemens serial lead, using Heinrich Huber's Pocket Reader v 1.0 software on the PC.
However, I have less success with the PR <> 5mx link. I use a cable provided by serialleads.co.uk, which they have checked and confirmed to be working OK. The software I use on the Psion is Reader v 1.42 by Mark Fleeming (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MarkFleeming/).
After linking the pen and the 5mx, and switching on the pen, I hit 'Read pen' in the Reader program. It correctly closes Psion's Remote link (if it's open) and then searches for the connection. More often than not it then produces the message 'Communications error - Switch the pen off, then on again and retry.' This never works.
Needless to say, I unplug / replug the cable at both ends, and try every possible order of switching on the pen and opening the Reader software.
It has worked in the past, but I'm not sure I can really describe this as an intermittent fault any more - I can't remember when the link last worked.
I seem to recall someone else mentioning that the Reader<>Psion link was flaky for him. Can anyone tell me what's wrong, or how I can set about investigating the problem?
I don't know if this is relevant: my Psiwin link is also dodgy (yes, I know that isn't big news!) I use v 2.2, because v 2.3 was even worse. It invariably begins by announcing it can't detect the Psion. If I just leave the machines linked and get on with something else, it will finally - maybe hours later - stop sulking and suddenly make the connection. Could there be something with my Psion that's messing up both Psi|Win and the Reader program?
TIA,
Chris

Hi All
Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the mmc (etc) card. I have been having the same problems with my PC/SmartMedia adaptors. I have tried everything to get my Olympus card workingbut to no avail. I am still convinced that it is something to do with build 158.The same card worked under build 156. Nothing else has changed. I have still got builds 154 & 156 on CFs but I cannot face the thought of wiping the drive and restoring from backup. As a matter of interest I have put both of the adaptors in my son's 7 and that wont read them either.
Martin asked about WLAN cards (I think, it was all getting a bit complicated for me!). I am using a Cisco350 and a NetGear MA401. Both work with my NetGear Wireless Access Point. Only 1 is compatible with the NetStaRF application, but I can't remember which. There is a good resource on the net as to which cards work. I have mentioned the URL on the list before but don't have it to hand. Mike McC could tell you!
Colour icons have to be a wonderful idea. I won't give you a list as it would be too long. I didn't dare admit how many apps I really had on my netBook in the survey!

Subject: P7 Microphone trouble
Hi,
I am having a problem recording sound on my psion 7. This is a recent problem that doesn't resolve itself after a hard reset. Playback of sound files works perfectly well, however, I cannot record anything. All I get is a background buzz (similar to that from the 5 series when recording with the backlight on). I can record a tapping noise if I flick my nail on the casing near the microphone. Any ideas!?!? Perhaps there is a means of adjusting the microphone volume? I have checked the surface of the microphone and it seems clear. Perhaps the microphone itself has become dislodged - is this possible?

I had my MC218 repaired by Pinnock Organiser Services, London (www.posltd.com). They are an official Psion service centre but can repair
Ericssons using 5MX parts. Try emailing the service dept with a description
of the problem. I got a email reply same day.

An occasional feature of postings is the information that the contributor has a mint Psion sitting in a cupboard as insurance against failure of the present machine.
I'm just interested - is this a widespread practice? It would be significant if there was in fact a pool of Psions like that out there: a virtual warehouse, as it were.

The address for UK - MC218 repairs (where mine is currently) is ERICSSON REPAIR CENTRE, CELESTICA TELFORD, CASTLE FARM CAMPUS, PRIORSLEE, TELFORD, SHROPSHIRE. TF2 9SA but telephone first for a reference number on 01952 230402. You then have to send it registered post and forget you ever bought one whilst they sod around with it.
Its not pretty, its not cheap (but cheaper than POS with Psions )and they are slow.

Greetings!
I did a bit of surfing during my lunch today, and checked Option's website...
Here's the datasheet for the GlobeTrotter
http://www.option.com/docs/globetrotterdatasheet.pdf
But for those who doesn't want to download it:
It's a PCMCIA type II card tri-band cardphone that supports GPRS.
(Forgot to check if it supported HSCSD also)
The power requirements are given as:
Power Consumption: 30µA, when card is switched off
Power down: < 1mA
Idle mode: <50mA max.
Registered Full Power: 550mA ave.(2W, Multislot Class 10 operation)
IF the MAX usage isn't too much above the quoted average it should work on the netBook. (If it doesn't report to the OS that it uses more than 750mA, that is )
As for speeds... It states:
GPRS Class B, Type 1 GPRS MT
Multislot Class 10 GSM 05.02 (4 slots receive, 2 slot transmit, 5 maximum
active)
I take that to be 4 GSM timeslots at one time.
Mike can probably explain that a lot better than me...
On the site there was no mention of Psion compatibility, but that's not unusual nowadays.
(I mailed the helpdesk and asked. We'll see in a few days if they reply )

>Ok, what is an opo file and where/how do I install it? Specifically Todo Print. I even looked in the manuals index... but didn't see it mentioned.<
An opo-file is a translated opl-file. You can write your own complex programs or small macros with the inbuild opl-editor which has an icon on the extras-bar. To be able to run such a program you have to translate it first - it then becomes an opo-file. A lot of these files can be run just by clicking on it or pressing enter - no special installation needed.
However, a good many of these files are macros which need a macro-launcher like Macro5 (freeware), Assistant, ExAb or Extrabars because of special commands in the program. You can find Macro5 at http://pnicolas.epocboulevard.com/ and links to other macrostarters as well. Some macros only work in connection with a special application or in a specific situation. I do not use Todo Print but I suspect you will need to have the todo-list view in Agenda open or at least Agenda to run the Macro.
Once you've installed a macro launcher check Pascal Nicolas' website for other useful free ones (some are quite outdated, some need modification but I suppose you'll find a couple that will make your life a bit easier).
Good luck,
Astrid

Hi Woody,
OPO files are usually translated OPL files with no icon, etc.. Often they are Macro5 files if you haven't generated them yourself (but then you'd know what they are, wouldn't you?). There's no mention of them in the manual because Psion decided that most users wouldn't use the OPL language. There is help for the Program program (!) in the machine and a programming manual on the PsiWin CD (but I believe all this is missing on the Revo and clones).
If you actually want to go further just ask. There are some very fine programmers on this digest.
For all it's faults this Digest is very civilised, certainly the most civilised I know of. Of itself it has generated no irrelevant mail to me. Lots of the posts are irrelevant to me but I read most of them anyway. Of course the Digest and it's contributors aren't perfect, but I think that's a human virtue.

Dear John,
<< My current T68 with Orange (in the UK) will soon be reaching the end of it's 1st year. Are there any new handsets out there that people would recommend as an upgrade?I >>
I find it difficult to answer this question as the Ericsson T68 is already a quite complete phone. I doubt whether you're going to find major new phone orientated features in the current crop. It's more of the same in the sense that you can get 65,536 screen colours rather than 4096 or more voices in polyphonic ring tones. New features are 'imported' from other areas like the integration of an FM radio, MP3 player or digital camera. It's probably best to have the T68 flash updated to almost T68i specification when you're pleased with the T68. When you feel that it's time to change I'd recommend having a look at the Nokia 8910i - a phone with true class.
<< UNLESS anyone can point me in the right direction for a CHEAP Bluetooth handsfree kit ( and PC/CF card while I'm at it) >>
Have a look at the web site of Expansys (www.expansys.co.uk) as they have a good collection of Bluetooth headsets and interface cards. The headset I have is a SonyEricsson HBH-30. It's not in the 'cheap' category but is very comfortable to wear, has a clear sound and is easy to operate. The money you save by not changing phone will sufficient to make an HBH-30 affordable.
<< I'm also thinking of switching to GPRS for email - any thoughts? >>
GPRS is interesting when you regularly download large files and/or do a fair amount of web browsing. It's questionable whether it's of benefit for e-mail exchange and when you're an irregular GSM-Data user. It's best to have a look how frequently you currently use GSM-Data, the volume of data you exchange and how much time you spend on it. Could be that it's more economical to stay with GSM-Data despite the slower connect and download/upload times. Still, the higher speed of GPRS is a convenience that may be worth paying extra for.
<< I remember the comments a month or so ago about the data exchanges when checking for messages - on a windows machine ... would Email Remover help reduce costs? >>
It would as GPRS is charged on the basis of data volume rather than connection time. Any kilobyte you don't download won't have to be paid for. Something you have to reckon with, on the other hand, is that GPRS' higher data speed can reduce the barrier to mobile data exchange. You may find yourself doing things you'd not contemplate doing with GSM-Data.

Dear Peter,
<< Ready to load software - Please insert a Memory disk or make serial connection >>
You may have missed messages on the Series 5mx Pro and netBook regarding the installation of the operating system and standard applications. Both have a boot stub which checks whether the operating system is installed. When that's not the case, the stub will attempt to load it from CF card or via a serial connection from a PC. The operating system (and applications) is then placed in a protected section of RAM memory and execution is passed on to the operating system.
The Series 5mx and Ericsson MC218 have the operating system and standard applications in ROM so that they don't need an initial installation. And the operating system can't be lost when all power is removed. What you're experiencing is an MC218 which starts up but, for whatever reason, can't find the operating system ROM and initiates the operating system installation process. In other words, the MC218 needs to be repaired.

Subject: Motorala + Linux
Hi there,
Some excerpts from www.theregister.co.uk/content/59/29361.html
"Inspired or insane, you'll have to decide, but Motorola yesterday vowed to make Linux the mainstay of its low and midrange phones. "
"Since Motorola had trumpeted past partnerships with Palm and Symbian only to walk away, why should we believe that it had sticking power this time? "
"That translates as - you don't need to have teams of Motorola (or Symbian) engineers doing the work, when you can have Linux coders doing it for free. "
"Walking away from Symbian and Nokia, Motorola is unlocking a Pandora's Box of competitive forces from which it might or might not be able to profit. That alone makes it one of the year's most intriguing moves, but is it one born of confidence and long-term commitment, or a desperate move to stem the success
of Nokia's Symbian/Series 60 licensing strategy?"
It is sad that one of the core members of Symbian have pulled out from adopting EPOC in their phones. or maybe just for highends?.
Symbian may have to rethink their licensing strategy to make the product more widely accepted. Once a critical mass is achieved they could probably make money out of it.

Martin,
Thanks for all your work. I've dowloaded the zip file and installed
all those that are applicable to me. By and large the effect os
positive.
My own personal feedback is that the TomeRaider icon once colourised
can be hard to see on some system backgrounds and might be better with
a block border. This is nit-picking in the extreme though.
The colourised RMRZip is tremendous as the mbm file affects toolbars
and icons all the way through the program. I remember playing around
with the main splash screen for RMRZip some time ago trying to achieve
an updated MBM for my own use - the main driver being those 10MB CF
cards! Can you even buy them in that low a denomination now?
Secondary drivers were wanting to create a colour MBM, including a
colour machine and smoothing the gradient fill. I may just fire up
another attempt, inspired by these new files...
Thanks again.

Subject: Re: Backing up to a Mac
So I've been thinking about getting a Mac and one of the problems has
been the basic need to backup and install applications. Perhaps you
Mac-heads out there can tell me how viable the following is as a
solution.
Get a FireWire CF card reader and use that as the main interface for
the netBook backup. All the documents are stored on the CF card so the
only things not backed up are a few apps on the internal drive - fine I
can always reinstall or back them up to the CF card. As an aside
FireWire appeals because of the tremendous bandwidth, jumping a
generation from RS232 via stodgy old USB!
So thats the basic link mechanism, bearing in mind all the warning here
about only formatting disks on the Psion etc. In theory it should be
possible to write a shell script (this is unix yippee!) to perform
either a basic backup or add as many PsiWin-style features as required,
maybe using shareware backup utilities if even more features are
required.
What do you think?

In my experience this is not necessary. I typically use up 30 - 40% of the charge during a normal day and always put the machine on charge when I go to bed. If for some reason I have only used the machine a few minutes or not at all during the day, I don't charge it that night.

Yes, I agree with this. Never charge a Revo or Mako when it is on, and always give it a full charge (6-8 hours or more) when you do charge it.

Well, it's more that small charges screw up the software, but it is true that they should be avoided.

Have you tried switching it off and leaving it on charge overnight? My Mako is getting on for 1 1/2 years old now and does not have any problems (well, it crashed the other day, but that had nothing to do with the battery...)
I'd like to repeat a warning to Mako owners in Europe. If you buy a third party power supply, make sure it can supply at least 500mA. A friend of mine bought his Mako at the same time as I bought mine. He bought a cheap 250mA power supply and it has messed up his battery. The reason for this is that the 250mA supply is not able to give full power a fast charge. The result is that the charge regulator circuit never gets hot enough to trigger, so it keeps on going indefinitely at 250mA rather than switching to trickle charge when the battery is full.

This sounds like a broken screen cable. You'll either have to send the machine in for repair or if you've got a soldering iron with a thin tip, a very steady hand and balls the size of coconuts, you can replace it yourself. I've done the job three times with a 2/3 successrate. I don't know if I messed up the third one or maybe the problem was something other than the cable. Apparently a company in Germany has screen cables that are supposed to last longer than the originals.

Would it switch on at all then? Maybe what he has is a 5mx Pro in a MC218 shell? I'd try downloading the 5mx Pro OS, putting it on a CF and see what happens. If it is a Pro, then Peter is a lucky SOD. Maybe Ericsson intended to release a Pro edition and this is one of very few pre production units that escaped into the wild?

It's the one in the backup battery compartment, and I have removed and replaced one on one of my first S5's and even had the Psion repaired on warranty afterwards.
> If only the socket is there, you've been screwed...
If so, I have a MC218 with a dying screen and would be very interested in this machine for spares. (I'd be even more interested in it if it's a Pro in disguise.)
What is the order of the silcscreen buttons at the bottom of the screen? If it is a MC218, they should be:
Desktop, Contacts, Calendar, My Phone, Message, Internet, Word, Sheet, Extras. Of course, even if this is how they are on your machine, it doesn't prove that it isn't a Pro. Maybe someone had a Pro with a broken screen and put the motherboard in a MC218 case and used the MC218 screen.

I believe the fix for this is that you must send the mail from an account with the SMPT details of that internet provider you are connected.
For example I have two accounts set up for one mailbox. I have one with the smpt details when I connect via the pc card modem and connecting to my regular dial up provider, and a separate account with the smpt details of my mobile internet provider (but the same POP details) when I want to send an email using my mobile phone connection.
So for your 4 different accounts you will need the same smpt settings, that is for your currently connected provider.
You also may need to specify which account you want to send the mail (Menu>Tools>Send message via account).
I would have thought that if you can receive email then your connection is OK, so modem settings is not the problem.

Subject: Colour Icons
Martin,
Your colorized icons are great and certainly brighten things up a bit. However, I do have a few more suggestions for you ... nConvert, Vexed, Messenger, Doodler, MagicKeys, QuikList, HotKeys, FlashBack, SmartFind, PowerBase, EncryptIt, Z80 (Spectrum Emulator) and Plan5. Please let me know which AIF files you need me to send you.
Kind regards.

Subject: Screen cable research, Psion Dacom,
Answer to: All
Re.: Screen cable research - Just as clarification, I never claimed to be scientific with my research and the only aim was to get a feeling, an idea of the situation. I think my research showed us that. Personally I owned a S5 and two S5MX's and never had the problem. My colleagues did not have the problem with their machines either. I really cannot tell you why, as I am quite a heavy user and open and closed it at least 10 times a day on average. I cracked a screen on the stone floor of an airport ... but that was my own fault. And Owen, besides the screen cable problem we already forgot about the peeling skin of the S5 and the fading letters on the keyboard <G>.

Re. Psion Dacom - Thanks, I did open it on your advice but somehow it all looks ok but does not work. I think the adaptor is just broken, when you move the "housing" of the RJ11 connector up and down the modem makes a lot of noise but does not get a dial tone. Someone kindly enough promissed to send me a cable (with modem) so will wait for that to arrive. Unfortunately indeed the modem cable is out of production and not available anymore. Thanks for the efforts.

Subject: More about the GlobeTrotter...
Greetings!
I got a message from Option's support people that I would like to share... --
You are right about the 'pre September 2002' which was NOT according the recommendations and the 'post September 2002' Psion which is OK.
With the old version, when sending via GPRS on max output power, the Psion PCMCIA slot was not able to supply the necessary power, which can hang the Globetrotter card. (especially in the 3+2 Time Slots configuration).
Psion corrected this problem and now the new versions seems to work fine.
To answer your question: The Max peak current is 750mA.

Those lucky bastards with the latest motherboard revision can use it to their hearts content, but the rest of us either can't use it, or must run at lower speeds... (No, I don't have the Init strings necessary for that)

Having recently put a man-day into testing the Palm Tungsten T, the top Toshiba Pocket PC and the Nokia 9210i, I thought some might be interested in my write-up? http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/ppcexpose.htm
Actually, I might just rate an old Psion 5mx on the same scale - I wonder how I'd find it? I bet it'd hold its own. Watch this space 8-)

Hi there!

Have a look at the Nokia 6310i, which supports GPRS (and which I am using with GPRS to send this) or some of the other models by Nokia, Ericsson or Siemens. One phone to avoid is the Panasonic (GD87?) which does have a problem when used with a Psion. I've used my 6310i with GPRS on a 3c, Revo, S5 and 5mx, as well as various PCs.

Have you got more info about the problems of the Panasonic GD87 with a Psion?
I'm asking this because I received an offer from Omnitel-Vodaphone here in Italy (a GD87 for 15 Euros a month in 2 years) and I was tempted to upgrade my trusty Ericsson T39 with this new "toy" ;-)

Subject: mBrain Font Machine - Backup
Dear All
This is a niggle, rather than a problem, but does anyone out there use mBrain Font Machine on a 5mx?
Every time I back up to my PC using PsiWin, it reads the 4 additional font files I have installed as if they had been changed. Does anyone else have this happen and/or does anyone know why?
My guess is that, each time I switch on the 5mx, those files may be opened by the software and, perhaps, this changes a label, which then makes PsiWin believe that the files have been altered.
The mBrain FAQs on Font Machine do not mention the topic.
As I say, just a niggle, but I'd love to know why.

Have a look at this thread in the "Psion Place" message boards which was a discussion of the problem with the GD87:

Subject: Police cameras - II
Further to my first message one of you kindly enough sent me the link to two very useful websites. After some downloading and several hours of fruitful work I have now a .OVR file for Route- and Street planner of over 1,000 cameras in the UK in most parts of the country. Who has got a suitable website where we can upload this file ?
What was involved ? I downloaded existing .ov2 files (for the Tomtom Navigator program, of course they had to change the format of the files again <G>) and converted these with a Windows program from one of the websites to a text file. The text file(s) I imported in SHEET and compared one with the other, combining the different positions of all files. There were in total 6 files, but only two large ones. This I combined with my own existing file for North West London and surroundings. The resulted file I converted with nConvert back to a text file, deleted empty spaces and comma's at the end of each line, and converted the text file with the program Makeover back into a .ovr file. In total about 5 hours of work.
There are some double entries of course as I was not sure what difference in the longitude and/or latitude is significant and what not.
My next project will be to create a similar file for Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Germany. I think I'll combine these in one file as there are less data available.
