Subject: How to upgrade Psion 3a using Psiwin233
Hi,
I've been happily using my 5MX with Psiwin 233 for some time now. My
wife has the S3a, which has been starting to show its age lately. I have
a spare 5 for when the inevitable happens!
Although I can back-up the S3a, I can't see the 'upgrade files' option
that I dimly recall from the past.
Does 233 include the upgrade option, or do I need to load something
earlier? I can't easily check as Psiwin insists on other versions being
removed before it will run.

I also bought a Belkin, a F5U103 Serial/USB adapter with a new Win XP laptop (Compaq 1525) but the two CDs had 95/98 & 2000 drivers.
I went to the Belkin web site and downloaded their XP drivers, but they were 2000 drivers, with instructions for XP.
But this fails to work with PsiWin. Does PsiWin 2.3.3 running on XP require manual changes to the Registry?
Have you found newer XP drivers?

My guess would be that the BeOS version that Sanjay used was BeOS
Personal Edition. This is a version that can be started from within
Windows and works within about 500MB of (disk) memory. I think there
is a Linux distro that also uses a similar approach to avoid the need
to create partitions etc.
So, as you say, it should be possible to run the EPOC emulator with
Virtual PC as if running on a Wintel PC.

PS As an aside, I believe that MS have just bought Virtual PC (http://
www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/29402.html) so it may be interesting to
see whether it remains possible to run Windows software on Macs in the
future.

I had a conversation with the repair company up in Toronto, Canada, concerning the battery upgrade on my two Mako's. Several interesting items came up.
He mentioned that when repairing the cable on the 5mx, he uses a thicker cable without the hole (sic) that's in the OEM part. He identified the cable as being made in Taiwan so I suspect the cable from Germany is likewise.
When I mentioned the final demise of Psion support, he told me not to write off Psion just yet, that there was a new Psion in the pipeline. I mentioned
the rumors about the new netbook and he stated that it was something more in the lines of a handheld like the 5mx. I tried to get more info but he said he was under a nondisclosure and couldn't say more.
I've always had good things to say about Psion USA's repair performance (I've used them a bunch since my first 3a) but after my last go round with them (of which I admit I am half to blame), I am now having the outfit in Toronto do
all of my future repair work. He seems quite competent and you can talk with him anytime on the telephone. And his prices are good.
My brainstorm (with no input from anybody), to keep the rumor mill churning would be a color 5mx (I don't like color but the market sure does), a faster processor, 32 meg on board, a rechargeable battery instead of the 2 AA's (arghhh!!! indeed but the market again would want it) with a backup battery to avoid the Revo/Mako debacle. I'll leave the interface/accessory fantasies to you power users.

Subject: PsiWin Backup & Restore
Steve,
I have been plagued with similar problems with my 5 and 5mx, C and D drives, and currently follow a strict policy of _never_ doing an incremental backup.
I _always_ move my backup folder out of the PsiWin folder on my desktop to force a full backup. It's a PITA in that my recurrent backup takes 20-30 minutes each time (not really that big a deal), but when I restore (I move between my 5mx and my Mako's periodically), it produces an exact copy every time with no surprises.

I have noticed an increase in the number of unsolicited emails received via this address. While I have no problem with Rolf's suggestion I wonder why we need to keep the email addresses at all in the web based digests. There is of course the question of the email addresses included as part of a message, often of non digest subscribers.

Re.: Connecting to Compuserve - What modem do you use and which script ? Do you know that you need to enter a script in the internet settings ? <<
The connection Compuserve works when I connect to the Interner using Web. I think there might be connection with the Compuserve mail servers. If I choose to open my Compuserve mailbox, and choose to dial up with Compuserve, it nearly always fails; this has the effect of dropping the connection. If I open the Compuserve mailbox but dial up with another provider, the mailbox nearly always fails to open the first time, but the connection is not dropped; if I open the mailbox again, it opens without a problem. The problem seems to be trying to initiate a connection to Compuserve by opening the mailbox or sending an email. I suspect it's some sort of timing issue, but it's a fairly recent occurrence...
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: Language filters/Memoware IMDB files
Hi.
Owen wrote something like "sh1t" (school chemistry lessons coming back after 30 something years) or "sheyet" (Yorkshire-speak) and "Orion Telecom's automated content monitoring gateway" rejected the Digest!
Then Rolf V. referred to that message and quoted it - including 5 examples of such "offensive" terms. I am sure he didn't mean to but by doing so he virtually *guaranteed* that the Digest would again be rejected.
But I think he was right. There are much worse ways of using language and the terms *automatically* complained of are routinely used by many, including me and many of my friends. This forum is fairly mature and adult with no obscenity I can remember, so such terms, routine on TV (not a commendation, just a comment) are not really offensive. And after all, they're just words; it's how they're used that can make them bad.
So I don't think the right thing to do is censor our language according to the "Orion Telecom" standards but to change his rules for this Digest or the address it is sent to.
On another subject, I am a film lover and I would like the IMDB 1920+ detailed TR file but the Memoware site will *not* download the complete file as I only have an unreliable and slow (aren't BT wonderful) 56k connection. I can connect to the 'Net for over 2 hours but the Memoware download cuts off at 1 hour (they have confirmed this). Neither TR or Proporta have yet replied to me.
I'll get a friend with a faster connection to download it and bring it on a CD but as TR is used on a lot of Psions and TR supplied the file on Memoware, surely that file ought to be available from them.
Of course, I'm p*ss*ng in the wind here!
Happy days,
Phil.

Hi folks,
The Anti-spammers reckon that replacwith <at> or anything similar is not always effective as the spam address-harvesting-engines are savvy to that. The digests are already available in zip form so that is good. If the eAddress in an HTML document is masked somehow, as a form or something (I can't remember how to do it) then the engines can't recognise it as an eAddress.
The find-and-replace function (I know you already know) should make whatever solution easy.
Good luck,
Phil.

All,
How would I restore my revo's lost programs and files due to failing to recharge from backed up files that have been copied due to reformatting my laptop's hard drive?
I have reinstalled psiwin and it does not seem to recognise them. Coping files to my revo results in them not being recognised eg can't open my old contacts file. I also tried copying them from my saved directory on my laptop to the new psiwin backup this did not work.
Any suggestion beyond paying £1 min to call psion uk?

Hi,
I have set up my T68i modem profile in my Netbook, both with a CSD and GPRS settings. I have managed to connect with both successfully. My question is how much does the settings under "Advanced" affect the performance of the phone? I have seen some contraditory settings on the Internet. Naturally Mike McConnell's site is my first choice for settings, however I would love to hear what other T68i users have for their settings as follows:
Flow Control
Terminal detect
Carrier detect
Does anyone know of an optimum setting?
Thank you for reading this!

Howdy!
I'll be in Edinburgh from the 26th to the 28th of March and would love too meet any Psioneers in the area.
I want to buy the new Philips Jackrabbit III combined DVD player, MP3 CD player and CDRW. I can't find one here in Ireland, at least not at an acceptable price. Could anyone here recommend either a shop in Edinburgh that would have it in stock or could get one in for me before I arrive. (Don't confuse it with the old Jackrabbit II that doesn't play DVD's.)
Failing that, could someone please try to find the best price for me from a mailorder company that will send to Ireland?

Didn't we go through all this just after the new digest was started? I said then and will repeat now that I NEVER EVER put my e-mail on the www and do not allow others to do so either. Also, I would NEVER EVER put someone else's e-mail on the web or give it in computer readable format in a public place like a newsgroup or e-mail list. I thought we settled back then that the digest would not be put on the web with e-mail addresses?

I'm all for filtering to keep out spam, but blocking single words like this seems a bit OTT. Shit isn't even a dirty word. I stepped in some the other day, and I can tell you I used much worse language at the time.

Hi
A guy at work has a Revo and a Sharp GX10 phone. He's looking for modem settings for it. Rolf? Anyone?
I don't know what features this phone has (looked more like jukebox to me...), but assuming it has high speed or GPRS, I'd appreciate settings for those too. I forgot to ask what network he's on, but it'll be either Vodaphone or O2 Ireland.

Thanks for that, Johan. I also found that I *could* search Google using the Web browser, but only if I settled for "Search Pages from Ireland", rather than "Search the Web". Similarly, as I said, Web will search Yahoo.co.uk, but not Yahoo.com!
I prefer Opera in any event (and these vagaries of Web consolidate that preference!), but Opera isn't really practical in a Revo, IMHO.
