I can't help you about your question I'm afraid, but I would be most grateful if you would let me know who the ISP is so that I may find out what the coverage area is as I have family and friends living throughout the Indianapolis area.
Others may be interested too, which is why I did not e-mail you direct.
Many thanks,

Christian, try ‘why eBay is safe’ on the home page. That gives useful info, including as a last resort: ‘Remember that if you still are not able to resolve the issue, you may be covered by eBay's Buyer Protection Programme.’

Christian Roth asks for advice about getting a broken screen S7 on eBay. I think there is someplace on the eBay web site for reporting fraud.
Several mentions have been made of Norton Antivirus needing to be updated. I have mine set up for LiveUpdate to be automatic. I get frequent notices that an update to the virus definitions are available for downloading. Have NAV without updating is worthless, IMO.

Re.: BatGauge7 - I don't have the problem with the menu. If you need any translation from the German, let me know. I have an interesting different bug. When I use the macro "Brightlight" from the same author it shows contract 17 and BatGauge7 shows contrast 18. The control panel also shows 18 so the macro has got a bug.

Re. Spam - Thanks for the advice, it comes a few years too late <BG>. Today I don't think I can stop it anymore. I have got 3 email addresses, 2 personal ones and 1 business one, and all 3 addresses get spam messages. However, I am happy I use my Psion for emailing, at least the virusses are stopped on the Psion and can't harm my PC at home.
Answer to: Christian Roth
Re. Broken S7 - First of all I think you should inform eBay and see if they can help you. They have more detailsof the seller and could contact him on your behalf. Are you able to proof beyond doubt that it was sent in a broken state or could it have been the transport / postal service ? Was the package adequately insured and can you claim on the insurance ? Also suggest you contact Psion and / or that German Company doing repairs and ask how much a replacement would cost. Are you able to claim on your personal insurance ? Sometimes insurance policies include accidents and other broken items (I am _not_ telling you to lie to them). Lastsly, give the guy a bad report on eBay so at least others will notice and not fall in the same trap.

Subject: 5mx emulator problems
Hi, everyone
Some problems with the 5mx emulator (I still haven't shelled out for a repair of my 5mx):
* When I copy a .sis installation file into the emulator's Apps folder on the C-drive (C:\Epoc32\Wins\C\System\Apps) and click on it (in the emulator, of course), I simply get the error message 'Not found'. What's the cause?
* Most of the time I can use my current Agenda file OK; but when I use Find, it crashes the emulator. How can I investigate the problem?
TIA,
Chris

Subject: re: that new sharp pda thingy
dear all,
a digest or 27 ago somebody provided a list of great links for the
sharp sl-c700. now, i've been looking carefully at this machine with
the hope that future generations of sharp machines might replace my s7.
& now i'd like to contribute a link or 2 of my own:
http://www.kakaku.com/prdsearch/ detail.asp?ItemCD=003030&MakerCD=75&Product=SL%2DC700
this is an online price comparison site i use here in japan. the
cheapest price available as of last night was 47,000 yen; that's 353
euros or 246 quid (that's for the japanese language version of course).
there was, i recall, some discussion here & elsewhere (can't for the
life of me remember where, sorry) about the apparent ease of adding
english language support to this machine (sorry i don' have a clue
about that) but i reckon somebody is making a whole heap of cash out of
this machine. & good luck to them, but if anybody seriously wants to
buy one of these machines & needs help with tracking down retailers
with english speaking staff & international shipping then mail me - or
post here - & i'll dig deeper on the net & try to find links & phone
numbers for you. otherwise you could always (i suppose) browse the
japanese site above via babelfish translation:
http://world.altavista.com/ (although i haven't tried this as i can
read just enough japanese to get what i need from the site).
i live in japan & played with this machine in an electronics shop a
while ago. let us not forget that (& apologies if this has already been
mentioned) it only has a quoted battery life of 4 hours. now, i may be
way off base here, but i imagine this apparent 4 hours being something
closer to 1 & a half hours on the luckiest day of your life.
i would have said: cherish your psions. wait for later generations of
sharp pda. but then i read this in last this a.mInc Magazine:
<<<Name: Sharp Zaurus SL-C760
Category: PDA
Price: Open
Release date in Japan: May 24, 2003
The Gist: Apparently launched in an attempt to pacify certain
criticisms of its C700 predecessor, the latest PDAs in the Zaurus line have an "easy-to-use" keyboard and a much improved CG (Continuous
Grain) LCD display. They've also had a paint job, going to glossy
black on the upper cover and all nice and shiny silver when you
open it up (well, the C750 has at least -- the C760 is still all
silver). A lot of other stuff is pretty much the same, but the newer machines have differences where it counts -- increasing the CPU speed
and use of memory, making them far faster and slicker-feeling units.
Both models now house a 400MHz Intel Xscale PXA255 processor, with
either 64 or 128 MB of Flash memory onboard.
Sharp has retained the useful swiveling function of the screen, but
it's now far clearer and easier to read than before and it will synch with big-hitter applications such as Microsoft Word, Outlook and
Excel. Both the C750 and C760 also accommodate SD and Compact Flash storage cards, and if you stump up the cash for the more expensive
model, it should last you for eight and a half hours before it needs
to go bye bye.
More info: http://www.sharp.co.jp/corporate/news/030516.html>>>
as much as we all love & cherish our epoc & symbian machines, i hope
this might all might prove useful/interesting to somebody.

You can also beam (just tap the IR icon and press enter) entries 1 at a time from agenda to the phones oragiser (I have with 6100, 6610, 6310, 8310) which is really handy as it not only saves the writing and corect time and date but also the alarm and repeats (only those supported on the phone though so check) and anniversaries, saves all that fiddly phonepad typing. would be great if phoneman had a feature to sync the agender and organiser - I dream on.

Dear subscribers,
in the last time more and more providers return our digest back as spam.
Please make sure together with your provider, that the Epocdigest passes through the spam filters.
A good (serious) provider offers a white list for sender addresses mails from which will be let through.
As the returned mails contain the whole digest, we have to download a big amount of mails each day (today it were 300 kB). This leads to a long online time we have to pay for. To reduce the amount, we decided, to unsubscribe for 1 week each address, which will be returned twice.
We hope you understand this measure.

Subject: Emulator and W2K
Dear Psioneers
Thanks to all who replied to my request for help on getting the Emulator to work on W2k. Thanks also to Keith Giles for the help which is available on his website. It turns out my problem was not setting the zip file to extract to sub-directories. This is why the setup program would not run. The emulator is now running fine.
However, I am still unable to get the Subst command to work in W2k. I added this command to the Autoexec.NT file, but it does not seem to have any effect. I have also been unable to map the directory to a driveletter, even though I have followed the instructions in the readme.txt file. I have set the directory to sharing, but suspect that I have not setup the Permissions correctly. Can anyone help?
Best wishes

<My nB became my first computer as soon as I got to use it in WI-FI mode both at home and in the office. Not only now can I write emails from my desk, but also from the kitchen and the arm-chair as well.>
How easy and how much does it cost to set up a Wi-Fi connection on a netBook?
Reply to Thomas F. VAN DER ZIJDEN:
Subject: N9210i
<1. The 9210i is a *huge* phone, so it seems to me. The 7110 is quite big, but it fits in my trouser pocket. However, I think that with the 9210i this is out of the question. True, my 5mx cannot fit in my pocket, but I do not need it permanently and I do need a mobile phone permanently.
Can someone compare it with the 7110? How do you use/transport your Commie?>
I use a leather case attached to my belt. The only downside is when you only want a phone with you it's a case of lumping around your PDA as well :-(
<2. The 9210i does not have Bluetooth nor GPRS. Furthermore the RAM is better than on the 9210, but still not very good. I would nearly say: the 9210i is an old piece of kit. Is there any news on its followers-up?>
There were a few rumours of a newer, better specified, smaller unit way back last year - however, nothing as yet has materialised. I think I heard that Nokia are going to make all their new phones incorporate both Bluetooth and GPRS as standard from October (not sure if this is actually true though). My guess (for what it's worth) is we are due for an upgraded 9200 series model sometime as the existing model is indeed looking a bit long in the tooth now. After all, the 9210 is supposed to be one of their top of the range units and the existing one is hardly cutting edge anymore so I do hope we'll see something soon. I certainly think there is some scope to slim it down more - if Nokia could shave 50g - 100g off it's present 244g then it would be far easier to tote around.
<3. The use of the 9210i would mean the end of the use of the 5mx, including the dedicated software that I use on it. I do not think that both can be used on a daily basis, given the mess of two agendas and contacts databases (yes, I know, synchronisation...). Can the 9210i seriously be used as the one-and-only PDA?>
Well, trying to synch an ER5 machine with an ER6 one on a regular basis would be VERY hard work so I didn't even think about going there! I now use my 9210 as my main PDA and I find, although it isn't as powerful or versatile as the 5mx, it is surpisingly good. My two main moans are the printer drivers are useless for direct printing and the lack of RAM which seriously cripples the wonderful EPOC o/s. But apart from that, yes, I find it CAN replace my 5mx (and can do things my 5mx couldn't do, such as displaying video presentations).
<I also love the speakerphone functionality that was mentioned on the Nokia web site. Does this work appropiately (volume, stability, can the other caller hear you) in your opinions?>
Yes, it's very good quality. It's so useful being able to talk to someone and bring up their details on screen (or play a game if the person is particularly boring!) at the same time. Other callers have sometimes commented my voice sometimes has a slight echo but this is usually when I'm talking a few metres away from the unit (no more excuses for stopping the washing of dishes now when the phone rings!) Volume is excellent, stability is good too, received sound quality is also excellent.

Subject: 9210i memory
I believe a free firmware upgrade was offered by Nokia to 9210 owners within the first year of purchase. It sounds worth doing from what you are saying about the more efficient handling of execution memory. I've got less than two weeks before my plain vanilla memory starved 9210 is a year old so I'd better get my finger out if I'm entitled to a free upgrade! I can imagine just one more megabyte of RAM would make quite a difference, as you say. However, what I don't understand is this:
The Psion 5 "Classic" had 8Mb of RAM and with all system tasks closed there would be approximately 6.8Mb free. My 9210 (with all system tasks closed following a hard reset) has only about 3.6Mb free. Surely the o/s overhead can't be using over 4Mb with nothing running as opposed to the S5 Classic's 1.2Mb? I don't understand where it all disappears to. BTW, I use another shareware program, the excellent Taskman, to manage what limited RAM I have. I find it's very useful and it too can auto compress memory at regular intervals, which is a godsend on my machine :-)
Reply to Owen H Morgan:
Subject: Interesting gadget (hard drive for backups)
This hard disk backup solution for Psion/Communicator owners sounds very interesting - albeit rather pricey! I don't have a PC so backing up my 9210 will become increasingly important as it takes over my daily tasks from my old 5mx and aquires ever more data. Backing up the 5mx was never a problem - I could just slot the 256Mb CF into my S7's drive "E" and copy the entire contents to my Microdrive in "D". However, without a PC, owning a 9210 with a 128Mb MMC is a real headache when it comes to just backing up. I tried using a MMC to PC card adaptor in my S7's "E" drive but it can't see the card - it just says "disk not present". So, I'm looking for a solution simply for backing up the entire MMC. Has anyone successfully got a S7/netBook to read a MMC in "E" drive?

Subject: Web 2, Opera 0
Two advantages of Web above Opera. The first one is that when you download with Web you get a nice %-bar showing how far advanced the download is, with Opera you do not and have to wait "in the darkness" until the download has been completed. The second one is that Opera (v 3.62) cannot open a second window while Web can, although of course on top of the first one.
