To all Psion completists: I finally got round to making the online 3-Lib index files searchable. i.e. the definitive 3-Lib shareware library main indexes can be queried in a standard web browser, searching for anything you like.

http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/cdrom.htm

Well, I thought it was cool 8-)

Also, the CD is updated for June 2003, with the latest files and snippets from round the world. Blah, blah...

And a quick plea to Psion site webmasters out there - if you don't already link to 3-Lib, would you consider adding it to your links page? I'd be happy to reciprocate...

Thanks, all, ____________________________________________________________________

> However, it suggests that the internal (C) disk will have to be formatted after switching on and letting machine boot itself. Is this action essential? <

Dear Philip,

Yes it is essential. The memory is organised in a FAT table. When a DIMM module is added the FAT table needs to be reorganised and you can only do that by formatting the C drive. The OS is stored in a protected area of RAM (thus acting like a ROM - only faster) so that will be lost too. But with the CF card it only takes a few minutes to load the OS again.

> What's /really/ frustrating, is that I seem to have a working Psion - except for the screen - but there is no easy way of getting the damn thing connected to the PC to get the last few hours of new files backed up.

What I now realise I want is to reset, switch on, and press Ctrl- <something or other> secure in the knowledge that the Remote Link is set to Cable. <

Dear Euan,

I can understand your frustration. I had the same symptoms last year with 5mx so it was sent in for repair. It's never easy to remember the shortcuts when you need them the most. Use <Ctrl+L> to bring up the Remote link dialog. Then press "C" to select Cable - it'll select cable regardless of whatever was selected in the box earlier. You can of course move the cursor one down to choose the baud rate, but it'll be the last chosen baud rate so there should be no need for changing that. However, if you are not sure what baud rate is set press 5 to select 57600 and then the cursor to the right to select 115200 (by pressing 1 you'll never know if it is 19200 or 115200). Finish by pressing Enter.

Good luck :-)

Subject: Route- & StreetPlanner crashing each other

My experience is that RoutePlanner and StreetPlanner/CityMaps work nicely together, both on my old 5MX and my new netBook. Except when I use the GPS, in which case switching from one to the other immediately crashes the one I'm switching away from... Definitely there's a problem with the shared GPS code.

If you configure the running program to NOT use GPS before you switch to the other, everything is OK. It seems to be the simulatenous use of the GPS that's causing the problem. I should add that my configuration is "1 second between GPS updates". Using a lower number might decrease the risk of collision, although I haven't tried that.

On another note, I have recently bought CityMaps, which does not include .sis files on the CDs. They are generated on-the-fly by the Windows-based installation program. I asked TomTom support yesterday for a solution, as I cannot install all those small maps at a time, or I would drown in installed "programs" in the Add/remove part of the Control Panel. Instead I want to put the .sis files on a CF card (I use this on vacation - I never know where I end up...) If I get any usable response, I will forward it to this list.

Itamar, that might mean I have a "dusty old StreetPlanner" if you're interested (the Millennium one, which is the latest of that name). But maybe you mean the latest version of CityMaps, which hasn't gathered any of the dust you apparently want included in the deal :-)

Subject: Re:Usage of EPOC machine

Hi Everyone

I use my Psion 7 for everything at home. I recently downloaded makedoc and was able to create prc files for mobipocket. My favorite programs include purplesoft's navigator, mobipocket reader pro, opera 5.14, psion's e-mail program, ABP5 banking program, Dighandler, and games like Castles III, Dark Horizons, and Sim City with colour patch. In the United States there is a ISP that does not require anyone to download a dialer but allows you to use any software or os to access the net. The ISP is called Garbersoft and can be found at www.garbersoft.net. I use a psion infrared modem that works wonderfully with my Psion 7.

I recently purchased a BJC 80 infrared printer and am having problems setting it up. I have the drivers for the psion but do not know how to use it with my printer. Please can anyone help?

At Work I use the simple database system for my casenotes, epoc word for forms, and spreadsheet for my mileage form. I love my machine.

<I have a new question for you all. Who uses his EPOC machine exclusively as their man computer without other computer equipment besides it ? And what do you use it for and which programs ?>

Hi Itamar

I use my psion 7 exclusify at home and about 90% at work. I love my psion 7 and cannot remember what is like before I had one. At home I surf the net using opera and a infrared modem. I use e-mail  program heavily and most of the apps. I am a job coach working with Disabled adults in competitive work situations so much of my paper work is done using the psion's simple database program and epoc word. I also use the sheet program (epoc excel) heavily. My favorite program is mobipocket. I have collected alot of ebooks through peer to peer sharing. I own the origionals but prefer reading them in electronic form. I also read in the bathroom using my psion 7. I have found three games that I really like Castles III, Simcity the color version, and Dark Horizons a space turn base game. One very useful program is Navigator a wonderful interface and file utility program. I tried winepoc but noticed that you cannot book mark files on the desktop navigator you can.  I enjoy using

Subject: New Dighandler V. 8.10

Hi all,

I would like to announce that the new release of Dighandler is at my homepage. It's completely redesigned on base of Symbian's StileGuide.

For those who don't know the Dighandler:

The Dighandler increases the modest features of the Email application and makes easier reading and handling both this digest and all Yahoogroups digests by one finger typing functions as

- storing of current message in the same database files,

which are created for "SaveMail" from Sergio Alisi

and/or "MailButler" from Oliver Dau

- storing of current message in word files,

- replying current message (using RepEvMail or the inbuilt

replyer)

- line scrolling

- pagewise scrolling

- messagewise scrolling with skipping

over certain messages

- listing of all subjects

- jumping to next or previous digest with or without deleting of the current digest

It runs on the S5C, S5mxPro, S5mx, MC218, Netbook, S7, Revo, Mako

The program is shareware (9 US$). For evaluation it runs without restrictions 1 month or 30 times.

Take a look at my homepage and download the program

<first many thanks to Michael, Marek and Kevin for their advice regarding sis-files downloading. And yes, I was doubletapping on the link (it works for zip-files so it has to work for everything else - just my logic!)>

Glad we all could help, Astrid!  It's a pity the Psion doesn't show an options dialog box to ask you what you wish to do when you are on a link to a file instead of having to find the options within the menus or learning the shortcut keys.

Now, on to a similar problem I am experiencing with my 9210 so can anyone help me with this?  I enjoy the site www.n9210.co.uk as it has lots of video files (.nims) for me to view on my machine.  I can quite easily download (although obviously not view) these .nim files using my S7 i.e. single tap the link then choose "save link as" xxxx.nim or whatever.  However, if I try to do this on my 9210, when I place the cursor over the link and press "return" (the Nokia's equivalent of a single stylus tap on a Psion so one can highlight the link without starting a download) it immediately tries to download a lot of gibberish.  I don't want to download the file, I want to save the link as a file as I would on the S7.  My guess is that the 9210i model can probably download these as it has a context sensitive cursor so all one needs to do is place the cursor over the link then hit "save target as" and download the .nim file to wherever one wants.  Do how can I directly save a .nim file from this site on my plain old 9210 (i.e. not "i" model)?  I have no trouble downloading this type of file from other sites such as the media section on 3-Lib as on this site I CAN select a link with the cursor without being forced into a download, THEN I can select "save target as" to download the file as on the S7.  Has anyone successfully directly downloaded a .nim file to their 9210 Communicator from the site www.n9210.co.uk?  If so, how do you do it?

I read recently that 10,000 Geofox machines were produced but less than a thousand ever sold.

What happened to those nine thousand machines? Were they ever sold off? Is it possible to still find a Geofox, new or secondhand? And has the machine stood the test of time?

Hi folks...

To Trygve Henriksen:

Hello Trygve, thanks for the further info on n-dream.  With regard to my own praise of same, I think I spoke too soon: all my spam is back in the last two days, and when I check my n-dream account, even though it still says "activated", I find that nothing has been deleted since approx. midnight June 12.  Are you similarly affected, I wonder? (I'm not complaining, it is a free service, but it really was good while it lasted, so I hope this is a temporary aberration?) :-)

Re Route Planner:

Well, thanks for all who replied on this, and so I am not alone in the incompatibility with Street, in which case I can handle it :-)

Re: Halliwell's

To Tim Williams - that was a Palmtop Softeware product, I believe, which means you should find it at www.tomtom.com if it's still available...

Answer to: David Owens

Re.: Routeplanner Millenium - Yes, it is obvious that when using the GPS connection you have to close at least one of the programs links, as they would both try and occupy the same link connection which will undoubtedly cause a crash.

Answer to: Karsten.

Re. Routeplanner Millenium - When using the Routeplanner program on the road, set it from the menu to "Show Maps" which will show you on the map when you enter a city map that is on your Psion too. If you need to switch, use from the same menu the option "Switch to citymaps" and it will close Routeplanner and take you to that city in Streetplanner.

Answer to: Philip Carlisle

Re. upgrade DIMM - When I added memory to my S7 I did a soft reset but certainly did not reformat my C disk. Whether it is the same for the nB I can't tell you, but first try with a soft reset.

Re. freezing 5MX - I think closing all applications and opening one by one until it freezes again and than you'll know what program causes it to freeze.

Answer to: Euan Mee

Re. 5mx problem - Sorry to hear about your problem. To activate the link do in the system screen Ctrl-L, right, enter. After you have backed up I would try a hard reset first, you have got nothing to lose !

I wonder if these crashes are due to the "strange" way Street & Route use the serial (GPS) port?

As far as I can tell, they continually Open-Read-Close the serial port, which has the advantage of allowing the GPS to be shared, but the disadvantage that the serial port can be "stolen" by a GPS app that isn't so thoughtful.

While repeatedly opening the serial port shouldN'T cause problems, it is concievable that two apps doing it at the same time could reveal some sort of obscure race condition in EPOC itself.

If that is the case, then neither Street nor Route can be "fixed", BUT it occurs to me that the race condition will occur far less often if the serial port is opened less often - which might happen if you go to Preferences and changed "Seconds between GPS updates" to a large value.

Thus reducing both apps from 1 sec to 2 sec should reduce the chance of a problem to 1/4, etc.

Chris Handley
