I have been using Mario Collados' excellent Assistant for some years now. It seems to me that it handles remapping of silk screen keys in a very flexible way. Why not try it?

Keith Giles, you may be a minority, but you are not alone in just wanting a small reliable machine with a usable keyboard, word processor, spreadsheet, database, and cheap replaceable AA batteries. That is just about all I want.

But I am a bit more fussy in wanting it to be able to use and produce files in formats that can easily be transmitted to, and used by, other platforms - and a screen wide enough so spreadsheets and word processing can be used effectively (ie not a tiny square like the Palms). Colour, sound, touch and email connectivity are not necessary, especially if they shorten battery life.

Just wanted to let you know that you're not in a minority of 1. There are at least two of us.

I use my 5mx for the same reasons as you. Connectivity is limited to beaming files to an iPAQ and I'm happy to occasionally be out of touch with the rest of the world. I can take the 5mx wherever I like, around the house or on the road, and still have the ability to write documents, OPL programs, spreadsheets etc. I don't know of any other device that is as portable but still has a usable keyboard. Add to that the stability and simplicity that is EPOC and I'd be lost without my Psion.

Keith was asserting that his needs are simple. Mine too...like Keith, I use my desktop fat Dell for e-mail and web and printing and all that.

Maybe there's something about living in/near Silicon Valley that makes us yearn for a simpler life!

So we are a minority of TWO, although, compared to Keith, I would certainly qualify as the Luddite!

Regarding the iBook's sleep mode, based on what I have read elsewhere I would happily put my iBook to sleep, put it in a bag and then travel across the globe (this is hypothetical since I only rarely travel and that is mainly for holidays). I do put my iBook to sleep and carry it around the house and into work (a short car journey) with no ill effects so far. As far as I know the sleep mode parks the hard disk properly so there should be no chance of lost data or a damaged hard disk and I have read about people who travel the globe with their iBooks asleep rather than switched off.

I think that things have moved on a bit since then. :) I actually think that they now offer better value for money than their Windows counterparts and maybe this is why Apple are now seeing an upsurge in demand.

Regarding the Revo charging issues, I'll hold up my hands and confess that my Revo experience is very limited and when I have used them I've never had a problem (probably due to following all of the guides and advice that I have read) but it is still not as straightforward as I would have liked it to be and plenty of people do seem to have had issues. The fact that the process is more convoluted than dropping the machine into a cradle and ignoring the whole charging process makes it man-on-the-street unfriendly and I doubt that most Revo owners researched how to charge their batteries on the web before using their machines.

I'm rarely away from a plug for so long, so I've never experienced the problem Itamar described (though at 65% I usually had about 10 hours to go). However, soon after the Revo came out Peter Rand posted instructions on Revoworld for building a battery pack out of parts he bought from Radio Shack. Re Edward J Curtis's Revo battery problems.

The Revoworld item re a DIY external battery pack for the Revo is an excellent solution to the difficulties in using the Revo away from a wall socket!

The article describes a simple way of using four AA batteries with a battery holder to recharge the Revo anywhere. I have found this very handy when travelling.

can't agree with your more, just happy being with my 5mx for the times I'mout of the office.

But marketeers need to keep 'improving' products to keep the commercialwheels rolling, it would be a sad world if improvements were not continuallymade, but even sadder that those products that were successful are leftbehind.

So a BIG hand for Will Green & his projected dedicated Psion magazine,already looked at the web page, found out about costs etc. Will, I'll beone of your subscribers & members, here's good luck to the venture.

Might be only Keith & I taking out subs, but I'll appreciate the effort &look forward to issue one.

I have been using WiFi in my MnetBook almost since I bought in early this year. It works very well, and if you have only thus far connectd to the web via dial-up, the connection speed improvement is impressive and makes using the netBook an even greater joy (being able to curl up in front of the settee, read an eBook and then decide to check your mail without moving is Bliss on a lazy evening)

I am using the Compaq WL110, which is really a rebranded Orinoco card and it is a Plog and Play solution on the netBook. i set up a D-Link router in my apartment in Bangkok connected to my cable modem and I can connect anyway on the first floor at excellent signal strength. On the second floor, the signal strength drops considerably, but I have never lost a connection either. I have not regretted my purchases in anyway. The only downside to the Compay/Orinoco card is it blocks the stylus, but it rarely bothers me.

Martin Guthrie promised a series of articles on networking with the

netBook )which hopefully comes out soon) and I believe, will be an excellent resource. (Martin, are you reading this? Still waiting patiently for your articles :P)

I agree I am distressed to see Psion not using epoc 5 or higher but I like the idea of an update for the Netbook even if that includes wince. I also signed the petition and love my psion 7. But I realize if symbian is not offered on the netbook pro much of the software and development will stop except for the phone devices. I hope this is not the case because I love my ER5 machine and will use it until it no longer works.

I was wondering if anyone had used or seen the NEC 900 ad wince clamshell device? It is a little pricey but looked cool.
