Subject: Still missing the Psion
I just thought I'd post since I still subscribe to the digest even though my 5MX died nearly a year ago & I switched to the Dell Axim 5. I enjoy the new machine well enough but still miss the Psion and still regret that there isn't a 'real computing' PDA/Palmtop out there.
Psion was a fully funtioning machine for which the connection to the PS was useful (but I was able to travel for several weeks 'away from base'. The Dell is cute but it's focus is on fun rather than funtionality. Can't go a day away from charging, almost all applications are predicated as being viewers into desktop applications. There's no onboard macro/programming capability (at least not at my low level of skill) and so you can't even do much to improve things for yourself.
Lest that sounds totally gloomy, colour is surprisingly useful, the lighter weight (even as I've gone to the higher capacity heavier battery) is great, and large document reading is MUCH easier, music playing is nice too, integrating with the desktop is a doddle (just as well since it's so
essential).
Cherish your Psions - I still read with nostalgia. I have now begun looking around for a sub-notebook - any experiences to share?

Try DateBk5 (http://www.pimlicosoftware.com) which can handle most
things. It might also be worth looking at Agendus if you want
something with a cleaner interface
(http://www.iambic.com/agendus/palmos/ ... A T|3 enhanced version is
currently in beta testing).

There are several world time applications and CityTime is very good
(http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm? fuseaction=software.showsoftware&sid=CE1E378D-F6B7-446F- BF447373B13551CB&prodID=1601)
I think that DateBk5 will handle all of your time zone in agenda issues.
All the best.

Subject: What Palm OS PDA for photo album (OT)
Hi everyone!
I'm now in sunny Las Palmas, Gran Canary where I'll stay for a few months and look for work to replenish the cruising funds, so my first question is: Are there any digest members in the Canaries? Also, if any of you are planning on a vacation here in the next five months, please e-mail me. I'll buy you a beer and might even take you for a sail.
I didn't have e-mail access from the boat in Portugal, so have been reading through all the old digests yesterday and today. (Of all the things to do in Las Palmas... My excuse is I'm waiting for two other yachts to arrive and then we'll rent a car together and go and explore.)
As I still have some money left and some due (refunded tax from Ireland amongst other things), I'm thinking of buying a Palm OS PDA to use as a pocketable photo album. When discussing cruising destinations with other sailors, I often find it too much hassle to fire up the laptop to show them the photos, so it would be nice to have everything available on an instant on pocket PDA with a good screen.
The machine would of course need to support some sort of flash disk, and in this case compatibility with my camera (SmartMedia) would be more important than compatibility with my 5mx (CF). It would be useful if the device could run some sort of simple photo editing software which could take a 4mpixel image from my camera and convert it to the screen resolution of the PDA without going via the laptop so that I could view photos in the field at better resolution than that offered by the screen on my camera.
I still expect my Psions to remain my "main" computers for everything not related to photos or navigation, but it would be useful if the PDA works with my T39m for e-mail so that I could take a photo direct from my camera, make a copy at lower resolution and e-mail it without going via the PC. I don't want to buy a smartphone, as I'll be sailing to Brazil and then to the Caribbean next year where the phone part won't work.
In short, I'm looking for the cheapest new or second hand Palm OS PDA with a really good colour screen, good battery life, compatibility with my T39m and ability to run simple photo editing software. It would need to be fast enough to run a slide show of photos at the screen resolution of the PDA, but I would expect this requirement to be fulfilled by most if not all Palm PDA's with a colour screen. It would also be useful if it was powerful enough to view and edit the 4 megapixel photos from my camera without everything grinding to a halt, but this isn't an absolute requirement.
Multimedia functions like the ability to play video clips or MP3 files are not important. My music collection is on a 20Gb MP3 player which performs this task admirably and as I don't have (or want) a video camera, I don't have any need for video capability.

Owen,
>>

It's easier for the airlines to make sure all devices that contain a radio transmitter are switched off than to train the staff to recognise when a certian device is in standby mode and not transmitting. Add to this the risk of operator error where the user thinks (s)he has put the unit in standby mode, and maybe you are using your smartphone in standby and someone else sees you and reckons (s)he can do it too. <<
There is a school of thought that many other electronic devices are potentially more dangerous when used on a plane than mobile phones; this includes devices such as PDAs, laptops, CD and MP3 players, GameBoys etc. The interference produced by mobile phones (and smartphones) is of the order of 2GHz, which is actually too high to have a significant effect on aircraft avionics. The interference produced by other electronic devices tends to be of a lower frequency, which is actually (so the theory goes) more of a problem; there is evidence of at least one laptop-user having had a serious effect on the navigation systems when on-board an aircraft. This is why *all* electronic equipment should be switched off during take-off and landing.
Cheers, Ian.

I just charge overnight, it lasts the day (and even the whole weekend) without difficulty.

A USB and Car charger is around £12, which means I can charge it from the laptop too.

Most long documents, emails etc. are done on my desktop anyway.

Even with DateBk5 it's not as good, but at least close.

Nope, the standard Tasks app in Palm OS5 has repeating Tasks (ToDos).

I don't really know, it's not a feature I'd use. But DateBk5 offers to load a TimeZones database, so I assume it uses it for something!

Not really, the prices on one page miss out one important option, Platinum+GPS, which gives door-to-door instructions, GPS support, and with the Major Road Maps long-range route planning. This means that you can replace both Route *and* CityMaps for less than US$45 for all of western Europe, with a more advanced product (e.g. routes to an address rather than a street, background recalculation etc.). The maps do look a bit basic, but the instructions are very good.
Download the trial and have a play.

Thanks Itamar for your help with the settings for the connection between the phone and my psion, but I still get a message when I try to synch sms messages or dial up to the net that says my modem settings are wrong.
These were the settings you gave me, any other ideas?

I'm sure that works quite well. It's the "out and about" that bothers me.

I bought my Psion primarily for use when I do cycletouring doing lots of data entry and word processing, and I'm not enamored with the idea that I'd have to carry cables, plugs and keyboards. But that's my *personal* problem. Some day, if I live long enough and can still do cycletouring, I'll probably have to move on to another platform with all its associated baggage. Now if my handwriting hadn't gotten so bad that I can hardly read what I've written...... :-)

Brutus was Caesar's *friend* - not son. Picky, picky, picky. :-)
BTW, has anyone gotten their copy of the new Psion Computer Journal? I've seen Will's posting on PsionPlace that it's supposed to be out. Maybe someone on the aircraft carrying my copy across the pond was attempting to use his Smartphone. :-)

Hi Cyril & Marcus,
Cyril, I think I must be rather a curmudgeon too!
Marcus, thanks for making me realise I'm not quite alone.
I only have 5mxs as ER5 machines. I recently installed SMTPAuth but I severely doubt that is the culprit. : • )
I deleted Web but I had previously deleted all the 'stub' SIS files as a matter of routine so uninstalling isn't an easy option. But at least I now know the source of the problem so a slow (very slow) analysis will solve it. There are several ER5 programs that will run on a 5mx despite being specifically written for other ER5 machines and one of these is probably the culprit.
Being a 'gadget freak' I have all sorts of irrelevant software, much of which I don't use so I'll just delete most of it, use OPXScan to delete the unused OPXs - and hope.
Then I'll start installing junk again.
Happy days,
Phil.

Hi Itamar,

Documents To Go on my Palm - Which Palm do you use and how do you type longer texts in ?
--
I don't generally do lots of data entry on my Palm m515. I enter shorter texts using a special screen keyboard called "MessagEase" or via graffiti using "Graffiti Anywhere", but for really long texts, I generally use my desktop or my Psion to type in the data, and then transfer these docs to the m515. I then save these docs as templates which I can quickly modify with a few taps when necessary.

Hi Itamar!
Some days ago you reported problems backing up of FONT files with Psiwin and I advised you in Digest 385 to
1. copy the files on the Psion from System- to a normal folder
2. backup
3. copy on PC from the normal to the corresponding System-(sub-)folder
As I told you that I can't prove it, because I don't have Fload, I am interested to know if the procedure did work.
Psee you,

Re.: Tungsten T3 - Well, that's why I use the combination of Sony Clie with the S7, to have the best of both worlds. Personally I don't believe in nostalgia concerning machines. My nostalgia feelings are more about my place of birth, old friends, youth, etc. With the S7 I was already used to a rechargeable machine so there is not much difference between them. When I travel my suitcase is full of chargers for my S7, Palm, mobile phone, shaver and than modem card, cable, etc., not to forget the phone and Psion chargers for in the car, amazing really. Concerning Grafitti the Sony Clie now have a handwriting program called "Decuma" that really works well for short notes, no codes or movements to remember. The Kane Navigation program looks great but is very expensive indeed in comparison to TomTom and others, but cheaper in comparison to in-car systems.

Re. 5MX Repair - Looking for a repair, given the state of your 5MX and your hope to get several more years from it, why don't you look instead at the upgrade to the 5MX Pro that is currently sold ? You would spend more but end up with a new machine in perfect condition with 32 Mb memory (X-mas is on the way ... <G>)
Answer to: Stephane Sage
Re. Psiwin blocked when backing up - I suppose you have an open file somewhere in memory not showing in your open programs list. Try if a soft reset will solve the problem.

The best World app for the T:T that I have found is WorldMate (by MobiMate). I use Worldmate Standard Ed. and think it is excellent (I even paid for it :-)
- You can try before you buy.
As far as Calendar Apps go, the two main contenders are Datebk5 or Agendus 6, both of which extend the calender to what it should be. There is also a number of less features freeware apps around.

Or because the excellent REM by Rolf Vonau does this and lots more? Still, I'd like to give your macro a spin if you send it to me. The reason is that I sometimes receive e-mails where the text is in an attached document, and then REM won't quote the text.
