Hello to all

Itamar, thank you, but I had already tried the soft reset without any success. I even  shut down "Stickey Keys" and "CapsView" (as they remain open while backing up, the program always ask whether I want to start again or forget it), to no avail...I only get the same window ("the file has been opened on the Psion..." on my pC, proposing to restart "Backup", but even the differential analysis doesn't show any progress going on...Perhaps a hard reset would do the trick...

Greetings from Grenoble

Subject: Another Voodoo Revo/Mako Battery Report

I know that lots of you have had excellent battery results from your Revo/Mako. But I'm one who has had nothing but problems with my Mako. I've tried most of the suggested solutions including the freezer bit. I even had the battery/pcb replaced. Things work for a while, then I'm back to square one - shutting off anywhere from a reported 50-90% battery level.

As a result, I've never felt safe taking the Mako away from home. In essence it was worthless to me. So I decided I had nothing to lose if I took a look at the battery compartment. I followed Ruey Loons instructions on his web site http://www.portal-pda.com/main.php3. I've often seen mention of the fact that the label is probably bent trying to remove it. I followed a tip I found on the web site - I used a box-cutter blade to lift the label enough to slip a piece of dental floss tape under the label then just "flossed" the label off. Worked perfectly.

It was a job for me, a non-electronics-technician, to get the battery plug to the pcb disconnected and then pry out the batteries. It would have been much easier to first remove the 2 little springs holding the silver-colored battery cover in place. But I've had plenty of experience of how frustrating it is to try and get tiny springs back in place, so I declined to do that.

Now what to do? I know the fast charging red LED stayed on irregularly, i.e. sometime 1 hour, sometimes a little as 2 minutes. I thought that perhaps the reason was because the fast charging was heating the thermistor so much that it was turning off the fast charging too soon. I decided to try a little "insulation". I first cut off the black insulation sleeve around the batteries. Then I cut a narrow slice off an old credit card, inserted it under the thermistor wires, taped the thermistor wires and credit card bit to the batteries, and reassembled everything. I figured I didn't give a damn if it overheated and blew up. I plugged in the charger and let it go. The red LED stayed on for 5 hours - yikes!. But the Mako worked. That was 3 weeks ago.

I don't know if the 5 hours resulted in the credit card melting or what, but since then the red LED stays on about 1-1/2 hours. At the present time I'm not about to go through the process of looking at the batteries again. It's anyone's guess whether this has solved the problem or not. I may find that in a few weeks it'll start acting up again. But I thought you might be interested in this.

Anthony,

To assist you with your app finding, if you load up Neuon's freeware app 'nSwitcher' it will allow you to cycle through open applications by pressing Ctrl+Space in one direction, or Ctrl+Menu in the other direction. Its quick, easy and hides in the top right hand corner of the screen. HTH

Hello my Friends,

Well being stuffed with Turkey and celebrating a country we didn't discover, I thought I would spare a few comments to the last two digest's. re:Wendy, the Dell Axim x5 is a cute little fun machine and I own one as well, but it doesn't come close to my Netbook or my Series 7 or even my 5mx for that matter. I guess its all a matter of what works for you best. My advise

to you would be 86 the Dell, go to the Psion web site, buy a 5mx or go to expansys and purchase a Netbook. If you really need a windows based machine but miss your screen and keyboard check out the new NEC Mobilepro 900 or even a used HP 750 handheld, both are great machines.

Re: Stephane: I agree that we should focus primarily on Epoc type machines, but we should also try to be of service to are friends moving away from Psion or other Epoc devices. Most of the digest readers are still with their beloved Psions but some of their needs have changed and the Psion family of products doesn't address some of these capabilities.

Re: Anthony, go get another 5mx and be done with it. I do not think you will be very happy with pocket pc OS, but again its all what meets your needs. (trying so stay neutral,,,whew its hard).

Re: Itamar: I still like Itamars style of using a combo of PDA's to meet his requirements, I use a Sony NZ-90 for pictures and it works very nice. And my primary machines are my 5mx and my Netbook.

Full Circle: I purchased a Series 5 in 1997 and used it until the Series 7 came out. The Series 7 screen cable had to be replaced after one week! I was so disappointed! But I thought it was a fluke and used it for a year or so until I had to reset the screen on a daily basis. so off I went to IPAQ land Win Ce land and finally Dell land. Now I have come full circle and realized that nothing beat the Psion for my needs, so I just created a stock pile of Psions, enough to last me probably 5 years or so. I found something that works and Im sticking with it, screen cable problems and all! by god!

God Bless Everyone

Answer to:  Stephane Sage

Re.: Palm and the like - As you asked for "(and particularly the Digest "founders") opinion" here is mine. As the EPOC machines will slowly disappear we will sooner or later all have to replace our Psions for other machines. Some will move on to other Symbian machines while others will switch to other platforms. While this is happening, there will be less and less new problems / software / explanations necessary for our old machines but we will all have questions about replacing our PDA's.

We can either keep strictly to the original subject of the digest and let it slowly die out, or try and allow the digest to move with the time and allow for other subjects to slowly "creep in". Personally I see us more as a "cyber community" with a common interest than a strict Psion forum only (there are many other places for that as well) and would like to see the digest evolve with the changed circumstances to keep us "together". However, if there will be many subscribers in favour of the first option, we can decide to keep it strictly Psion / Epoc / Symbian related. Please give us your opinions.

Re. no more trusty Psion 5MX - Again the same advice, buy a new 5MX Pro from Clove Technology and work with a 32 Mb machine for another 8 years.

I subscribe! It works like a charm, it's fast, does NOT hang, compresses to less than 50%. Where's the tradeoff?? ;-)

I don't understand: compressed files open as fast as uncompressed or faster with no problems... can anyone try an explanation that's not all too technical?

Funtastic!

As one of the main pro-Palm posters I was actually wondering about this

issue myself.  I am of two minds, the first being that this is a Psion

digest and therefore Palm discussion should be handled separately and

the second being that people will want to find out about their

post-Psion alternatives and hearing from ex-Psion users might be very

useful to them.  My personal view is that if people want to know what

the Psion alternatives can and cannot do then this is a good place to

ask but if other digest subscribers object then I would be happy to

desist.

Yes, map pack, and the application itself is a free download.  From there I just bought a cable to connect my Garmin eTrex to the Palm. Works a treat together, you don't need to buy the Mapopolis hardware.

BTW, I may have misled you, you have to buy the expensive maps to get auto-recalculation of route.  You do however get door-to-door instructions with Platinum, and even the Navigator maps work out at around £75, so equivalent to the two TomTom products they replace added together.  Sort of.   :)
