How did you do this, Alan?

I'm afraid this is a fairly common error with Opera. I'm not sure what causes it, but it seems to occur frequently with java-heavy sites.

Ok, I've pushed where the label used to be on my Malay netBook. I've recalibrated and reset to factory. It just keeps drifting. When I have had too much coffee, I have to fight the urge to pound the stylus right throught the screen! Is it worth dismantling and reconnecting the cable to the MB? From what I can see, I don't have to dismantle it very much to get to that cable connection. Is it likely to do any good? Has anyone tried this? Has anyone wished they had left well enough alone and just kept pushing on the label?

Subject: Re: Revo Connection Problem
I have done several things since to try and solve this.
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled PSI Win (several times) - no change
2. Downloaded a OSI Win registry cleaner to delete all the registry entries after uninstalling. This doesn't appear to work on my computer. Can anyone tell me where the registry entries are to remove so that I can then reinstall PSI Win as if it was totally new to my computer?
3. I have used a windows utility called HyperTerminal to prove that the revo is communicating with my Com Port OK. When it was disconnected, nothing was coming through, and when it was connected again, there was a signal. There did not appear to be anything else trying to communicate with that COM port.
4. I have looked at the device manager, where there are only one each of port 1 and 2 listed. It is in the properties box of PSI Win where there are two of each of the COM ports listed, but only one of them is ticked.
5. I have tried the revo on the other com port that I also know to be working.
So, how do I tell PSIWin there is only 1 COM 1 and 1 COM2? This seems to be the problem and I am totally baffled as to what to do next.
Many Thanks for anyone's help.
Neil

That sounds like the problem, yes.
Try to delete the extras, then check that PsiWin is set to use the correct COM port. In fact, to be completely certain, first set it to another COM port, stop Psiwin, start it again, then back to the original.

Subject: re: Backlight on 5 and 5mx, Re: Series 7 and Mbook screen cables, My Revo has fallen and cain't get up!
Hello my friends,
Great last digest, just wanted to respond to a few concerns in the last digest: to Stephane, I have a original series 5 1997
vintage and when I activate the backlight, the noise is really loud. My new 5mx still has the backlight noise but not as bad.
Also I recall in the last digest someone needed a 5 or 5mx to transfer some files. I would be more than happy to send my trusty old Series 5 (works great) if anybody needs it. Re: Koi Hin: I have been using my MalayBook with no screen problems at all. I purchased a Series 7 in 1999 and the screen cable failed after one week! I sent the machine back to Psion for repair and it lasted for about 5 months, I think they just replaced the old harness with a similar one. I still have the machine but the screen (touch) response is very poor and I know its time for repair again! But I have a newer Series 7 that
works great for now, and two Malaybooks with no problems, so I think Psion did try to improve the design on the later models. I have done allot of electro/mechanical designs, and anytime you are running a signal or power or both with a clamshell design it can get very tricky, there is some very high stress areas, and usually small gage wire that gets flexed allot. this failure is very common in some cell phones that have the clamshell design. So I do not fault Psion, what usually happens is, you know you have a potential problem, but marketing deadlines and end "o" budget dictate the final episode. But as you know these things come back to haunt you, and can actually tarnish a product badly. Now last but not least, I have always been very careful with my Revo (Mako) not to let the battery run down, but I did. I charged the machine for hours. You know the Revo charges very so....I finish the charge, turn on the Revo, no go! re-boot Revo, error message
"corrupt!" I have been using computers for a long time and I know what this message usually implies......my Revo is dead!
At such a young age!....it was so pretty! I could do a restore but that only restores local files not the OS. Any help would be
helpful. Sorry for the rather large response.Special thanks to Alan Morris for his clear cut definition of Psion's lifecycle. And to Rolf for not replying to my feeding him at my expense in his own country no less! Im sure my friends in the UK would enjoy my company!

Hello All,
Trygve wrote: 'To Roy: Why are you deleteing information on the machine if you sold it? Why not just do a hard reset?'
I wanted to leave as much of the freeware etc. installed, so the new owner can delete what they think they won't need. A case of trying to be too helpful I'm afraid!
Jim wrote: 'Roy, so you don't feel too bad, it's taken me over a year to figure this one out.'
This is probably the only thing that took a long time for me to figure out with my Psion!
Phil wrote: 'Also, if the buyer is going to use the Psion on the I'Net or for eMail you might download either Sink2 or the TCP/IP patch (I use the patch) and put the SIS file on the machine ready and tell them why it's there.'
I must admit I forgot to do this, but I'll certainly point him in the right direction.
With best regards,

The worm is NOT on your Netbook, and indeed never will (it does not run Windows software!). The crashes are caused by a worm TRYING to infect your machine, through your internet connection!
If you run the Sink2 program, your Psion will be fine!

You don't need MacConnect. There is a Java program (written by a Mac owner) which is (apparently) better than MacConnect, and it is free too!
Sorry I can't remember the name, but it should not be too hard to find using Google.
As for the USB problem, you just need a Serial to USB converter. The site for the Java program may contain some hints in this regard too.

Although I don't own one, I would say no! The compatiblity of WinCE software is not certain, and it is not designed as a consumer product anyway.
Thats not even considering it runs using a Microsoft OS (and as such as not nearly as reliable as EPOC).

To be fair to Phoneman Pro, neither can Nokia! At work we recently changed from O2 to Orange and were given new phones. We could not find a way of transferring the "multi-level" data from one 6310i to another.
>>>
I've found the best way to manage multi-field contacts is simply to use the Conacts App built into EPOC. Just beam the contacts back and forth between the psion and the phone. It helps that I have input all my contacts using the correct fields.
My SE T68 (and I'd guess almost everything after it) has a Send All option so 'phone to 'phone copying is easy.

<<<Re. Multitasking - Lately a lot of people talked about the advantage of multitasking of EPOC. I just wonder, who actually uses two programs that run at the same time ? Yes, you can leave them open and jump from one to the other, but which programs do you run simultaneously that work at the same time ?>>>
I quite often have email down loading whilst surfing the web. Also once a month, I start 12 copies of Data and upload the latest .csv fields into them simultaneously. Thirdly I have some rather large Word documents which I tend to hit Ctrl-S on and then flip to the next one to update... Fourthly I often copy data from Web or Word into Agenda entries and having to wait for the programs to start up and load the file and then end and save the file each time would drive me crazy.
At the moment I have these apps open:
System
PhoneMan
Data (4 files)
Word (3 files)
Jotter
Agenda
Contacts
How does that compare to other people?
Is there a conflict between the various ebook reader software? I've installed Tome Raider, ebook and Vreader5 and now Vreader5 just hangs when I try to open a file. I've unistalled ebook now - it was the wrong way round for me and I didn't really get on with it.
(PS for those of you interested in the netpad saga I'm waiting for POS and Psion to reply to the repair enquires...)

I have one more thing to add which I have just realised. If I turn the Revo off, then try and connect, it turns itself on automatically, which shows that my PC is talking to it, but just not properly establishing communication.

>> Just curious - does anybody know what is the status of this project ? <<
There is no such project. But there are a some people investing a lot of time in trying to create one. The latest updates are under the netBook Pro section in PDAstreet. There you will also find some user reviews on the WinCE version.
>> What would it take to have the same software on say a Sendo X smartphone (which has an optional keyboard) and a netBook / netpad ? <<
If you refer to the netBook Classic and the current netPad, I do not think porting backwards is a realistic option, even if you managed to make a deal with Sendo and/or Symbian.
If you refer to the netBook Pro and a theoretical future "netPad Pro" based on the same chipset - and perhaps even the future "netTablet Pro" which Psion Teklogix has been hinting about recently - and if there would also be Symbian versions of those machines, chances are quite high that any new OS level feature you find in the Sendo X would also be available in these machines, including Bluetooth keyboard profile, full SDIO support etc. But take note of the two 'if':s.
Kind Regards

That's a great help in my deliberations. Is there another touch
typist out there who can also make this comparison. As I've broused
through the Web, I have run into glowing reports of the netbook keyboard
-- and if it is not incoveniently small, I'll probably opt in that
direction.

I'll probably use it almost exclusively for word processing.
>the processor just didn't have enough horsepower when the word files exceeded a realistic number. I have 20 word files on my Dana now and 4 on my Treo. Both access the files just fine. I have over 1,500 on my 5mx/Mako/MBook, and accessing is instantaneous (took over a minute on the Dana or the Treo when I had around 500 files loaded).
I doubt that I'd need 500 at any one time. But that leads me to ask how one does load files from Windows to either the Dana or the MBook? Does one have to use Convert to transfer each individual file from Windows? Can they be .RTF rather than .DOC? (Most of my files are Wordstar files, but there's a macro to convert them to RTF.) Can one have files stored on a CF card - as on would on a Zip drive or floppy - for either the Dana or the MBook?
Since my last note, I've found and explored the Psi-linux site and gather that they've gotten much further with the 5mx -- but haven't gotten so far with the Netbook. But if they solve some remaining problems, the success with the 5 should be transferable to the Netbook. I'd be glad to learn more about this -- but probably should monitor that site for particulars if I decide on the MBook.
