Hi
You might like to know that the final version of my Email_Indent macro is now available for download from:

The reasons for stopping further development are explained in the ReadMe file, but Epoc Digest members should already have a good idea why.

Dear Itamar,
IE>e.: Wireless Card - I understand that downloading email is not a problem with Wifi connections, but how can you send email for example at McDonnalds if you don't know the SMTP server they use ?
In any specific case, this might not work, but in general you can use whichever SMTP server you are currently using. Some ISP SMTP servers are restricted access; you have to logon using that ISP account in order to use it. Several commercial and free email providers dont have this restriction.

Subject: UK Power Supply for Netbok
I'm offered a UK power supply with the Netbook (MBook) I just bought on ebay - in addition to the US power supply included in the price. I don't spend enough time in the UK itself to make it worth while. But it it could also be used elsewhere in Europe (Germany, Greece, France) and in South Africa, it would be worth buying. Is the UK power supply usable in the rest of Europe, with suitable plug end adapters?

The answer is Yes. But be sure to get an adapter that works for all "Continental Europe". There are small differences between the national plugs in different European countries, but a plug design exists that will work all over the place (however it does not connect to earth in Denmark, which fortunately is not strictly needed for such a power supply). That's the one to go for.
Standards are not.

Hello Niel Ogden
This is my first writing to the digest and is mainly adressing the messege sent by you about communicating with USB port.
I don't have a Revo, but an Ericsson MC218. I am using a "USB to Serial cable converter " in order to connect my Ericsson to a laptop PC. It is working fine. As far as I remember, I paied about 150 danish kroner, which is about 23 US$ for the converter.
"Prolific Technology Inc".is the manufacturer of the converter.
All the best

I downloaded the Atomic Time program which works nicely. However, it creates a problem when you have Crontab on all the time as whenever you update the clock with Crontab active, the next alarm goes off (a known bug on Crontab). Did anyone have the same problem and found a way around it ? If I first have to close Crontab before and open it again after each time I connect Atomic Time will not be functional.

Subject: Apple Newton & Psion
Dear All,
I recently acquired a Apple Newton 120 (OS 1.3) off of Ebay, just really out of interest to have a play with this discontinued PDA.
Hating these new little silver Pocket PC and Palm devices that the world seems to be obsessed by at the moment, I was delighted to receive the Newton and glory at the sheer size of the thing. It's ENORMOUS! I thought my 5mx wrapped in it's Congo Mulberry case was big, but it's nothing compared to the Newton!
Other than admiring it's girth though I have to admit I can do very little with it. It didn't come with the connection to PC link cable or software, the email facility is Apple's own and is now abandoned and it's storage facility (PCMCIA) cannot be read by a PC.
It did come however with a great Crossword puzzle game, and second game entitled 'Columbo's Mystery Capers', but other than it's £80 up the swaney for nothing!
Any digest readers got experience of the Newton? Can I use the infrared port to connect it to my beloved Psions? Anybody got a PC connection cable and software they want to sell?
All of this does highlight quite how fantastic my Psion is! It took me about quarter of an hour to write the word Agricultural on it this morning, you pen based Palm and CE user must be mad as hatters, that's all I can say!
Cheers,
Will.

GPRS aircard/netbook ( T-Mobile )
>>Is it worth getting this aircard or can I just use a newer phone that's GPRS enable with the IR port?<<
Yes and no , it should work in nB , mnB and NB Pro as it is a Hayes-compatible modem card wich uses GSM radio frequencies rather than voice frequencies to communicate with the remote device
Option ( www.option.be ) is the manufacturer , a CDMA version is inthe works
Aircard vs GPRS-enabled (smart) phone
An aircard requires a PCMCIA slot or jacket -if you happen to be an iPaq 3***/5*** user - and takes its power from the device's battery ( read your operating time per battery charge goes down the toilet ) Setting it up can be tricky (may require special script to get it working , Mike can you chime in on this ? )
A GPRS-enabled phone does not take anything in the sense of device resources , has its own power supply and can if need be operated independently
If you opt for a smartphone with a PC-style operating system ( i.e Symbian32 R 6.1/7.* , Microsoft Windows CE , CE implementations based on NetBSD, Linux or BeOS ) then the smartphone can handle all Net-related stuff , but in order to have direct exchange between your Psion and that smartphone select a model with infrared so that you can exchange files directly between Psion and smartphone The best choices are :
Nokia 3650/3660
Nokia 6600/6620
The skinny of it : 3650 available cheaply ( factory unlocked even cheaper than the abovementioned aircard with T-Mobile subscription )
3660 = cosmetic/ergonomic makeover of 3650 ( better keypad and screen , better finish on snap-on covers )
6600 : currently available for free with a T Mobile subscription
6620 : improved version , triband but lower band is 850 Mhz giving better US coverage , especially inside buildings !
Both models in the 66** range have full Web/Wap browsers and email clients , you can install ftp ( downloads only so far ) and ssh ( port of PuTTY , do a search on sf.net using s2putty as keyword ) on them
Getting email and Web working is far simpler as the devices are either preconfigured or prepared to work with mobile networks
If you can get file exchanges to work between Psion and S60 phone , you no longer have to bother with setting up the latter for Internet access

>>may I point to my shop http://www.pulster.de<<
Can you make the shop accessible for older browsers ( Netscape/IE 2.0 ) this will make it also accessible from Opera/Netfront
I have tested on Netfront 3.1 on my N-Gage and still cannot enter the shop
Netfront is the default browser on Japanese high-end PDA's ( SHARP SL-C 860 and Sony NZ/UX series ( both use 3.0 )
A test version (3.1 ) for Symbian32 Series 60 handies ( currently N-Gage and 6600 only ! ) can be downloaded from : http://www.access-sys-eu.com/Support___Downloads.5.0.html , it can be ordered from pdassi.de and mobile2day.de
On abovementioned page there are also links to support files and a web forum
Netfront is a superb browser for site management , it can make a log of your wanderings through a site and keeps a record in the form of .dcf files wich can be opened in an ordinary text editor and it is this feature wich sets it apart from other browsers wich use proprietary formats for logging/cacheing
I have used that feature several times to grab adresses and telephone numbers from webpages

If everyone changed their email address say, four times per year, the ISPs might start to do something about the spam situation. They may of course just charge you for changing your email address so often!<<
Sorry to rain on this parade but the situation is far more complicated than that as an increasing portion of unsolicited email is now originating from system adresses belonging to the Baby Bells , cable/adsl operators and even government sites , not to mention mobile operators -especially in Continental Europe and Latin America -
And these get your email adress in ways that are totally beyond your control
This is a growing problem and only Bayesian filtering on the client device can remedy this in the long term ( my provider xs4all.nl has recently its fair use limits from 2 GB/month to 5 GB/month on the lite accounts )
I route all my mail to Digitale Stad wich use SpamAssasin + bayesian filtering + Vipul's Razor to divert practically all mass email to a separate folder
My biggest concern with server-side filtering/blocking is that you are at the behest of the operator/institution/RBOC/ISP/cable operators as they can put flags in messages to designate them valid ( commercial ) email , completely ignoring message content ( yes I got several of these and had to make several calls ( both over the phone and face2face , spruced up with emails containing sample messages ) to the appropiate helpdesks/sysadmins in order to get SpamAssasin to handle these in the appropiate ways ( i.e. spam )
As far as the origins of unwanted mail is concerned , nearly all I get nowadays comes out of system adresses belonging to RBOC's , cable operators , some mobile phone operators , occasionally even government and educational sites
Many of the RBOC's , mobile/cable/telephone operators and ISP's that send out unwanted mail are familiar to our subscribers because they have their accounts either there or know the names from many a Usenet post

Here they come :
Despammed.com :
free , filters out all the crap , gotcha is you actually need a second account to forward the filtered mail to
Digitale Stad nederland ( dds.nl ):
52 euro/annum , separates all junk into separate directory on their mailserver , supports IMAP , even on native clients ( no clunky Web/SSH client required )
Got it working now on both my s60 handy ( nokia n-gage ) and my trusty hp680lx
xs4all.nl :
Regular monthly charges ( full ISP service ) filters using blockliststs , not all spam is filtered , IMAP only accessible through Web interface and Pine , all forwarded mail from other accounts lands in inbox

It is an upgrade , mainly in order to improve international language and character-based writings ( Cyrillic/Greek/Roman ) support The physical device is identical to the 750/760 , so everything written about these applies here
Japanese support is still the best found in a device of this size and price class
These are *CE-based devices ( a.k.a PocketPC , but MicroSoft-free and with a different paint job so no or very limited connectivity with classic Mac ) Warning : Requires pristine eyesight ( lenses or glasses however o.k) because of small physical size
Available in Europe through pulster.de and trisoft.de ( Continent ) and shirtpocket.co.uk ( UK/Eire ) , about 800 euros apiece

Subject: Netpad,power supplys, wonderful digest
Hello my friends,
Great last digest. I have been amazed how hard it is for some US Psion users to obtain power supplies for the mbook and other machines. It was my pleasure to assist Jim Watson and his wife supplying them with us power supplies. After all I had four of them, and their machines were almost completely exhausted of remaining power. Through the course of helping out Jim I have made a new friend, which is one the reasons I enjoy the fellowship and technical knowledge of the Psion and other pda models users possess in the digest. Jim recently sent me a care package of misc Psion parts and a nice working Revo. I tested the battery against my Revo and they both hold a charge at approx the same rate. Thanks Jim! I recently acquired a Psion/Teklogix Netpad 3500, I have the Netpad and a charging station but I am in need of a cable to connect my Netpad to my computer, if anybody knows a good source for netpad accessories please advise, also the unit specs specified the that the unit was win ce.net but symbian os was available in rom, I think this was a misunderstanding on my part in reading the specs. The folks I purchased the unit from were from the UK and extremely nice people so I do not fault them at all. My question to the digest is: can my netpad OS be converted to Epoc OS? The unit is extremely well built,"like a tank" and I love the style, but being a Epoc fan and owning many Psion's I would rather have symbian OS onboard. Has anybody noticed that on ebay Psion machines are almost wiped out except for somebody who must be unloading 5mx machines by the cart load. For a "dying" platform it appears that Psions are being scarffed up at a rapid rate. One last question; I use my mbook everyday and my 5mx when its more convenient to carry a small machine, I am now considering using a Revo as well because of the small form factor, does anybody else use a Revo daily and have you had any problems.
Nice cold cloudy day in San Antonio
Kind Regards- god bless

Subject: Random numbers.
Hi
I have written a small OPL program to chose one record at random from a database of 475 records, or rather, I hacked something Rolf Vonau sent me a long time ago to make it suitable for my purposes. My problem is that the random doesn't seem to be very random. It very often comes up with the same records again. I know it's difficult for computers to do anything at random, but there must be a better way. The code I use for the random generation is:
OPEN MP3File$,F,T$
MxRec%=COUNT
RANDOMIZE DAY+HOUR+MINUTE+SECOND
RecNr%=1+INT(RND*MxRec%)
RN&=RecNr%
POSITION RecNr%
S$=F.T$
CLOSE
Any idea how to make the selection truly random, or at least more so?

Subject: Re: Mobile phones and roaming
I am a member of a motorhome (RV) list and there is much discussion at the moment about GPRS and roaming in Europe.
The costs for GPRS roaming given by UK salesmen are incorrect as actual bills are much higher than the actual usage made.
The GPRS PC cards, that can't be used for voice calls, are said to be cheaper than phone (voice) calls, but are not cheaper.
Vodafone say that the fixed monthly UK cost remains the same when used in Europe. This is not true.
It would appear that GSM data calls are much cheaper and not much slower than GPRS data calls.
