Microsoft's AutoRoute has had a few well publiscised patches published to reduce the long delay between GPS position updates. These were NOT published by M$, but others. I've not heard of any problem relating to M$ taking any action.
On the other hand M$ took action against a young 17 year old Canadian teenager whose name is Mike Rowe, who used his own name for a web address.

There is Doodler from http://www.neuon.com.
This has multi-page capabilities as you describe and seems to work
reasonably well (I always had one bug that seemed to lead to a big
black line across the screen). You can also export to mbm files from
within the application.

Because UK wiring regs call for ring circuite where both ends are terminated at the fusebox, all sockets are switched in the live side and all plugs contain a fuse related to the current drain of the appliance.
That's quite different from much continental practice, where sockets are rarely switched, plugs can be inserted in sockets in such a way that appliance switched live side can be connected to supply neutral - meaning that when the device 'off' switch is turned off, the whole kit and caboodle can still be live to ground and potentially dangerous.
I do not imagine we would ever persusde the Brits to abandon their monumentally huge 13-amp plugs, with their industrial-strength brass prongs protruding skywards just waiting for an unwary foot to wreak havoc among the metacarpals.
Sometimes a British plug is bigger than the thing it is connecting to the mains.
EU voltage is already pretty well standardised. I think it is 230 volts at 50 Hz.

I find that taking notes in Sketch is very frustrating because the page is soon filled up. What I want is to be able to take hand-write notes but without the bother of creating a new document each time. <
Dear Timothy,
The Jotter applications is the most suitable one for this task. Just tap on the New entry icon and the Insert sketch. All your notes will be in separate records. It may not be exactly what you want, but I'm not aware of an application which matches your request.
Also JWIN by Phil Spencer has a nice Scribble pad for handwriting notes.

Subject: Trying to flash the Netpad sys$rom
My new Netpad has the 1.05 (166) software but it is rather buggy, particularly the virtual keyboard.
I have been trying to update the OS and have completely failed. I downloaded the most recent version from the Teklogix site and my machine refused to recognize it. On the other hand, I had more luck with the oldest OS available.

The .exe file went into action but then I got:

So now I don't know what to do.
What I need to know is whether the ROM is up-datable. I have contacted Teklogix but I don't have the feeling that answering customers' queries is their first priority. So I am very much in the dark. I would most appreciate suggestions from other listers.
Not having a reliable keyboard with functioning function keys makes navigating on the Netpad very problematic.
With thanks

Subject: XJMail and attachments
--
TO: Johan Lindahl
I have a question about the e-mail client XJMail (http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~ktkawabe/densha_e.html)..... Would be great if it managed to send attachments also. Anyone have a clue if it's possible? ---
Sure, it's no problem sending attachments with XJMail. I played around with the program quite a bit last year, and here are my notes on how to use the app (I've included more information to cover other questions you may have):
"The program is not graphically oriented like the built-in Mail app, but it adds lots of new functionality:
1) Automatic downloads and log-off save time and money
2) XJMail can be configured to automatically delete downloaded mails from the server.
2) Signatures can be automatically added to new mails.
3) You can effortlessly scroll through mails by tapping the space bar or the Enter key.
4) Press "Shift+N" to jump from one mail to the next.
5) 'SMTP authorisation' is possible.
6) Mails are saved in simple txt format - great for archiving messages. With the free pX.opo plug-in, you can automatically archive mails in an easy-to-read format.
7) A "peek" function allows you to view the first xx lines of messages which are larger than xxK.
Problems:
- At present, XJMail cannot send texts with Latin (e.g., German/French) characters. Incoming mails with Latin text can however be viewed with the Symbian Text editor by entering "Shift+Enter" while viewing the mail.
- Poor integration with Contacts: addresses have to be entered manually or copied from another app and then pasted into XJMail.
- Switching between various POP3 accounts is currently a slow process. But a future version of XJMail should make it possible to automatically download emails from multiple POP3 accounts.
Here are the instructions for setting up XJMail (follow them step-by-step!):
1) Make sure you have the freeware Symbian text editor installed on your Psion.
2) Download the following files:XJMail.zip: mkMulti.opo: <http://www.chaos.to/psion/takumi/dist/mkMulti-0.20b.zip>hsSorter.opo: <http://www.chaos.to/psion/takumi/dist/hsSorter-0.121b.zip> <http://www.chaos.to/psion/takumi/dist/hsSorter.readme>. pX.opo: <http://homepage2.nifty.com/jinxi/pX0412.zip>hsARefile: <http://www.chaos.to/psion/takumi/dist/hsARefile-0.23b.zip> an XJMail importer that moves marked mails from inbox to specified folder.
3) Create a new folder called:'System/jfonts'
3) Create a new text file and name it 'jiskan.gdr'. Make sure 'jiskan.gdr' is located in the folder 'System/jfonts'.
4) Install the SIS file "xjmail.sis' (contained in XJMail.zip file)
5) Copy the files 'xjm_SMTPA.opo' into the folder 'System/apps/xjmail' to enable the 'SMTP auth' feature. 'xjm_SMTPA.opo' is contained in XJMail.zip file.
6) Create a new folder called:'System/apps/xjmail/importer'
7) Copy the files 'mkMulti.opo', 'hsSorter.opo' and 'pX.opo' into the folder 'System/apps/xjmail/importer'.- 'mkMulti.opo' is a plug-in needed in order to send attachments- 'hsSorter.opo' is a plug-in needed to sort mail by subject, date, etc., and - 'pX.opo' is an archive plug-in which automatically saves selected mails to a text file in an easy-to-read format. - 'hsARefile' is a plug-in needed in order to create filters for saving mails to designated folders
- optional:"MailToXJMail" utility. <http://www.bc.wakwak.com/~tesuri/psion/MailToXJMail.SIS>With 'MailToXJMail' installed, tapping the Email icon launches XJMail instead of Email, i.e., it hijacks the Email icon on the silkscreen. (XJMail refers to plug-ins as 'importers'- you can find a table of XJMail importers at: http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~ktkawabe/densha_e.html and http://www.chaos.to/psion/takumi/index-en.html)
8) Go to the Extras bar, select "XJMail" and set up your email account information. For General Editor write "Editor".
Other:
Changing column widths:
Ctrl+k: allows you to change column widths (number/from/subject/date/size)
Ctrl+Shift+Fn+R: Refreshes the folder: implements new column widths and refreshes numbering of emails in the folder"
Hope the above provides you with a little guidance as you become familiar with the program.
Peter

Subject: Re: Scandinavian characters
This is mainly for the record. (I've contacted some of the discussants directly, because some of my questions were too embarassingly elementary to bring up in public.)
Thanks a lot for valuable comments from different quarters.
My immediate concern is of course the Swedish åäö (oh, yes, I agree there should have been a European standard for them.) And then the Danish-Norwegian, Icelandic, French and Spanish ones that Andrew illustrates. And the Slavonic and Baltic diacritics become increasingly important with the enlargement of the EU.
Fn+key as suggested by Andrew is one possibility, which I use on my MC218. But it is a bit cumbersome if you have to use it in every second word, so I would like to avoid as far as possible.
Possibly similar problem with Twin Key, if you have to switch it on and off all the time.
So maybe the solution is Alexander Zavorine's Key Mapper, if it does the job with one touch. I'll have to look at it.
Or maybe macros is a way forward? If they are not too slow. (BTW are macros possible on MC 218? I haven't found anything about it in the manual yet.)
And, come to think of it, the German version of netBook should be better than the UK version. It already has öä - and in the right position on the keyboard.
The only remaining problem then is å, which preferably should be were the Germans have put ü.
And y and z should change places.
All the best

Subject: View HTMLmail (again!)
Thanks to the help of many on the list, I managed to get the View HTML mail macro running. However, on my first try I got another error: the macro runs, Opera opens correctly, but then I have an error message:
"file://c/System/Temp/HTMLMailTemp.html Could not open file".
I'm fairly sure the error is in the temp file settings in the macro. These, however, seem to be correct:
const KFileName$="C:\System\Temp\HtmlMailtemp.html"
const KWebName$="file://C:\System\Temp\HtmlMailtemp.html"
Why then does the drive letter in the error message miss the colon? Can anyone help out?

Subject: Re: Edigest # 439 : USB connector
Suzan,
You don't need a specific psion connector to do that: just use a "USB to Serial" adapter, and plug your serial to psion cable into it.
I connect my 5mx this way to my laptop which doesn't have any serial port and it works just fine.
Just mahe sure which port number ( com1: , ..... com5: ) is assigned to the adapter and set it accordingly in the PSIWIN config.

Subject: Re. EC standard plugs
Itamar,
>>Re. EC standard plugs - Is there a difference in the voltage ? Why can't we change the plugs and sockets without changing the circuits ?<<
British mains is nominally 240V, in the rest of (western) Europe, it is 220V. However, a deviation of about 10% either way is allowed, due to variations in load/consumption (ie. everyone switching their kettles on at half-time in the FA Cup final). This means that in extreme cases, European mains may drop to as low as 200V, while British mains may rise as high as 264V; however, most mains-powered devices can tolerate such a swing without too much trouble. Many chargers for cameras, PDAs, MP3 players etc. are what are known as switched-mode supplies, which means that you get the same voltage out, no matter what you put in (well, within certain bounds). My wife's Palm charger is essentially a US charger (it has the US-style flat pin plug), onto which a variety of other mains plugs can be attached; US mains is either 110V or 120V (I forget which), which means that the charger is theoretically able to deliver the correct charging voltage for a Palm from a mains voltage as low as +/-100V and as high as +/-264V.

Dear All,
Just a quick note of thanks to all who offered me a copy of the MC218 CD.
I've now been able to get hold of a copy from a kind member of the Digest and are now enjoying the full benefits of the MC218.
I may be burnt at the stake for this, but owning both a 5mx and MC218, I think the MC218 is a better machine. So there!
Again, many thanks to all who offered a copy of the CD.
Cheers,

Teklogix tell me that I need to send the machine back to the company I bought the machine from for an update but this is not very practical and I would prefer to update myself, if possible.
Many thanks

Subject: Sharing a serial port between devices
Reply to Susan Hoffman
It is reasonably easy to share a single serial port between 2 handhelds, I
have been sharing between my Psion Netbook & my Nokia 9210i for over 12 months
without any problems.
Most PDA software on your PC will grab the serial port on start-up, so the
first software to load will grab the serial port, the second will load but not
get the serial port, both will show an icon in the system tray, which is at
the bottom right of your screen. The icon to the left will be the item that
has control of the serial port.
If you can't connect your device then right click on the icon for the other
device & select the 'Close' option, now right click on the icon for this
device & select 'Connect'.
You can restore the missing icon at any time by clicking Start, Programs,
Startup Menu, then select the entry for the missing icon. You then need to
repeat the above to select the correct device. You can also put item on your
desktop by right clicking on the entry select copy, then paste a shortcut onto
the desktop, preferably near the system tray.
You can also buy a serial extension cable so you don't have to scramble about
behind your PC, I picked one up from Maplins in the UK for about £5.
The above should work for any PDA, it should also work for any number of PDAs
that use the serial port.

Re.: antivirus - Would it at all be possible on a Psion that email is sent without the knowledge of the user ? I mean, would email be sent that does not show up in the outbox when you start your connection ? Somehow I don't think so.
Answer to: Astrid Stappenbeck
Re. CF Fail w/Machine Fail? - A good question but somewhat exaggerated. Keep all your files on the C disk together with your email folder (but file old emails with for example SaveMail). My OPX files are on the D disk together with as good as ALL my programs. The most used programs I keep in memory and so the others will take slightly longer to open, not a problem. This way you should be able to have 5 to 8 Mb space free for memory / new files. You could of course move infrequent used files to the D disk as well. I created a "Data" and a "Storage" folder on the D disk for old information and infrequently used files.

I run a blog website using the excellent Movable Type software. New additions to the site are web based so I can easily run it via Opera on the netBook. However, on occasions I have to delve into the site innards and add/modify files via FTP. This I can also do on the netBook with nFTP. However I haven't found a way to modify read/write permission settings even though nFTP lists the file attributes. Does anyone know how to do this using a Psion?
