Martin,
Will my horses for a while, meantime using Psion's Data with much use
of Notes field. I think that the Psion's Data creates unnecessary
problems by having both Business and Personal entry screens,
especially as it defaults to Personal whereas I really think it should
default to the Business screen. But that's just my opion.

Manuel asked about RMRTask. I registered it a long time ago and found it very useful. It is configurable and should suit most needs. It is shareware and so you can try before you buy. In the end I set up something similar in Powerbase that did the job better (for me). If you have a database app on your Psion, give that a try first.

Which is the desktop converter you are referring to?
Would this prog accept for example a csv file from my Psion 5mx data ?

Subject: RE Which GPS + some questions of OPL programming
Greetings!
With quite an interest I have followed the discussions which GPS Will G. should
obtain for his psion. For the same reason that I also send a similar posting a month ago in this Digest on the use of a GPS and a Psion. With some aid of the only two Digest-readers, who responded, I have now taken the plunge to obtain a Garmin Etrex Legend. (Vlad and Keith G., thanks again!). I don´t have to add much to the already given advices by others, I can only give you the advice in the case that you have the money ( ;-) ) and intending to stay on several places or bicycling over a long distance during several days without having a laptop in your luggage, to get a GPS with a large amount of memory for additional maps. The 8 Mb of the Legend is in that case not quite large enough. Consider the Vista with 24 Mb or the higher range GPS-types with more
memory or with a memory card. The best advice is to consider well the usages and conditions you going to meet with your new GPS.
Speaking on the use of a GPS for long trips without the use of a laptop for reloading maps I have still my question unsanswered for a EPOC program to transfer map data (Garmin .IMG files) from my Psion to the GPS. There are lots of programs who can transfer routes, tracks and waypoints to and from the GPS (like Psitrex, Garpsi and Garoute), but the equivalent of an exxisting MS DOS program like sendmap I have not discovered. Is it since Psioneers don´t really care to see maps on a GPS, because they are able to see the route on the larger screen sized Psions?? I can see that, but when you travelling on a bicycle like Keith , Will and I do, this is not really desirable.
One way to solve my problem is to use the XTM emulator on my Mbook and run Sendmap on it. I have never tried this and am not sure if this is working. Are there other psioneers and OPL programmers, who can tell me or can give me a hint where I can find the technical data how to send data via a serial port? As author of some freeware OPL programs like Biklog and Saillog, I have some knowledge of OPL programming, but I don´t have any experience with communication procedures. Are there here some seasoned communication experts, who can help me??
Many thanks for your help!

Subject: Using S7 with Nokia 6110
Last week I was trying out my S7 with a flash upgraded Psion Gold Card Modem and an old cable-connected Nokia 6110 for e-mails (oddly enough, at San Sebastian de la Gomera where Owen is moored though I did not realise it then). It works after a fashion but seemingly more slowly and with more hangups than the IR link with other more modern phones (eg 7110 or 6310) which I've also used.
Does anyone know (or recall - because this technology is obsolete now!) the optimum modem settings in the S7 modem setup pages for this combination? The relevant manuals are silent on the matter. Or does it make no difference?

Dear Melvin,
>>So there must be something amiss with my e-mail settings. Can anyone suggest what to do? I CAN get e-mail through the my college web page, but it's very inconvenient. My second problem arises when I try to connect with my 2Wire wireless router supplied by SBC Yahoo to handle my DSL line. I have a lucent orinoco silver card and set the modem for "rlan" at the suggestion of one of you. But I still can't connect with the 2wire router.
Oh dear, I was hoping 2 digests later someone with better expertise in this area can provide an answer for you. I will to take a (poor) shot at it, and hopefully dont confuse the situation more than it already is!
About the mail problem, unfortunately I dont know what the problem is and email settings are so myriad its almost impossible to know what was wrong. Someone who understood the error codes might have the solution for you. Having said that, have you tried a soft reset? It occasionally does
wonders.)
As for your Orinoco Card be sure to select the appropriate modem setting for it.
You may have pointed out the following information in your previous posts, if so apologies in advance but just wanted to check some basic questions with you.
1)Is your Wireless DSL modem setup and you can browse wirelessly from say your laptop?
2) Your router is configured such that mutliple machines can connect to it? The router does the 'dialing' and authentication to your ISP everytime you turn it on without a PC?
If you wish you can contact me off-list and we can try to figure out what the problem is exactly.
Warm regards,
Koi Hin

Hi Steve,
Thanks, didn't remember that option. That could probably be the solution. I think what people are asking for is a Data converter between the 5mx/netBook and the P800/P900. If Handy Databank can import/export an *ASCII* CSV file, then this problem would be solved with the following steps:
1. From 5mx/netBook/Revo etc, save data as CSV file.
2. Beam it over to P800/P900 using plBeam.
3. Import CSV file to Handy Data
In case Handy Data requires a CSV in Unicode, I guess it should be possible to use the Neuon nConvert on the Psion to create a Unicode file, but I have not tried this. And, unfortunately, I do not have a P800 at present either, only the emulator.
Take note that these steps do not require the use of a PC, which I think is essential for people on the road.
Kind regards

RE: Adding discs to EPOC ER5 emulator
Dear Owen,
In your startup batfile, which typicall is in:
C:\Epoc32\Data\
Add the following line:
_EPOC_DRIVE_M X:\MyFolder\
Change the 'M' to your preferred drive letter. Change 'X' to the disc.

Owen,
give the card to someone with a Mac & CF-Card reader to try and format. If you know noone there, go on land and find a designer's bureau or a copyshop with graphic-design services, they usually have Macs. If nevertheless you want to get rid of it, by all means I'll give you my snailmail :-)

No I'm sure I was wrong...
I do not know a way to make the fax account to be shown on the left folders list.
But how on earth did you manage to set more than the unique allowed Fax account (some wrong restorings?)?
If a reset does not do, I'm afraid you'll have to rename your index file or even your Mail folder (& then re-set THE Fax account) Tell us back... <<
Sorry, I should have got back to you sooner; no, Shift+Ctrl+L only shows/hides the email folders, not the fax accounts/boxes.
I have no idea how I've ended up with two Fax accounts. They appear to be identical, but are only visible from Tools - Account Settings. It's not a serious problem, it's just weird, particularly as I'm not in the habit of sending faxes anyway. I wondered if on one of the few occasions when I did try to send a fax, it failed, and somehow created a rogue Fax account in the process.
Anyway, if no-one has any bright ideas, I'll just wait until my netbook needs a reinstall of the OS, and see what appens afterwards...
Thanks for your help, cheers, Ian.

Hi Owen,
there is a repair company in Leipzig. Just now I made a phone call and they informed me, that they can repair the creen cable in 2 - 3 days. It costs 75 Euro + 19 Euro for transportation in any foreign country.
The address I will tell you by PM, if you are interested.

We can't seem to get Psiwin 2.3.3 working properly using a Serial to USB convertor on WinXP Prof. It connects but reboots the machine after running the backup for a while. This has happened every time and on a number of different laptop and using different USB to serial adapters. Help would be greatly appreciated

Re.: CF card - Sorry I can't help you. However, I noticed you wrote a 80 Mb CF card. This must surely be a very old card as today they are not made in that size anymore, right ? Could it be you just hit the end of it's life ?
Re. Broken 5MX - As you use your 5MX mainly on the boat and don't open and close it much anyhow I would certainly try and go for a used S7 or nB / mB. The screen is larger, in colour, great keyboard, usage of a modem card, and many more advantages. And for portabillity when needed you can sync with your Revo. I am sure you'll never look back and enjoy it immensely.

Re.: Broadband advice - Interestingly enough my son has a better signal downstairs in the kitchen than on the first floor in his room, the connection being in the study on the first floor. So much for "better horizontal lines ..."

Owen,
SRS in Germany does a screencable repair plus RAM upgrade to 24MB for 49 Euros. They state on their website: "All prices include labour and VAT. We send all machines back by C.O.D. We do not send spare parts. All prices are exclusive of postage and packing which is an additional 12.50 Euros incl. VAT." Regarding the used cable they say: "Our LCD cables are NOT original Psion cables. Instead we use cables which do not have the usual recess problems."
You can find the english version of their webpage at:
http://www.srsgmbh.de/en/index1.html
Under the download section there is a pdf document which you need to fill out and send in with your Psion.
You can ask questions under the following phone number: -49-6039-9397-0
Mail: service
My own experience with them was very positive. I did send in my Psion for repair on monday and had him back on friday (I'm livin in Germany). As far as my jugement goes they did a very professional job (some parts of my open/close mechanism where broken because my Psion had accidentally fallen down on the floor). I can' t comment on the longevity of the alternative screen cable because so far I never experienced any problem with it (knockin on wood).
Hope this helps,
Roman
