Timothy Williams commented that his 5mx, repaired in September by POS, has died again. My 5mx also got a new screen cable, supposedly a new improved version,  in September from POS and then died in February. Suitable unimpressed I have just sent my machine off to Paul at psionflexi.co.uk. I wish him luck in his single-minded endeavour to overcome the curse of the screen cable!

>Re.: Science & Darwin - Quite a while back we already discussed this matter in a very interesting discussion in the Psion forum of Compuserve. I have no problem with your explanations and statement. Yes, there are certain basic fundamental laws in nature that science does explain and that can be taken as "absolute truth". I would say that gravity is another example. However, science can only explain what is measurable, while clearly some matters in this world cannot be measured. Telepathy does exists but is not measurable by science. Beauty does exists but is not measurable by science (what I see as beautiful someone else might well define as ugly). Some people would like science to prove everything and that is impossible.

>As to Darwin, I think that there are many links missing in the theory that are taken for granted with the reasoning that "these will be found one day". There are strong links that human being might have developed from the apes, but the link has yet to be found. What I personally find strange in the Darwin theory is that it is only the human beings that developed into beings with a self-conscience, a culture and being capable of development. Why did no other string(s) of beings with these caracteristics develop from this large group of apes ? And why did no other type of animal develop these caracteristics ?

- No, as had been said before, scientists do not claim "absolute truths". They deal in probabilities - the more attempts at failed falsification, the greater the probability of a correct hypothesis.

- Telepathy exists? A bold statement.

- It is "impossible" for science to prove everything, given time? Another bold statement.

- Beauty (in a potential sexual partner, at least) is indeed measurable; it's been experimentally shown many times.

- Man has not developed from apes; rather, we have common ancestors, millions of years ago. The fossil record, plus DNA analysis, show that this with a great degree of certainty; certainly more certain than any alternative.

- Humans are not the only creatures with self-consciousness, culture, or capable of development. There are other species with self-consciousness and culture (in the sense of the transmission of taught, rather than inherited behaviour). EVERY species is in a continuous state of development.

(Try the philosophical (esp. philosophy of knowledge), anthropological, paleothological, zoological, and socio-biological literature on this. I have.)

A word of advice to those trying to rationally debate with those who "believe" as opposed to know: don't. It's been tried many times before, and those caught within an ideology will twist and turn any fact not compatible with their belief.

Hasn't this off-topic thread run its course?

Hi All,

Just a note to mention that we've opened a new Forum on the FreEPOC website.  This in order to improve the response time and quality of support on already released programs (> 80 at the last count - all freeware of course) as well as a place for people to make feature requests.  The forum also replaces our old support mailwhich was flooded by viruses and spam.

The forum can be accessed directly at http://forum.freepoc.org/ or via the normal FreEPOC home page: http://www.freepoc.org .

Dear all,

Thanks.

First of all many thanks to all who have posted replies to my GPS question. I've copied and pasted them all into a Data file and will get the unit later this week based on your advice.  I'll let you know which one I go for! Plus research into software available.

GPS Cycling Holder.

I've got a bit of a tour planned this summer and would like to mount my 5mx or Revo on the bike (Saracen Skyline with my lovely new Brookes saddle). The Revo would be ideal because of the weight but the recharge battery thing could prove a pain, so maybe the 5mx would be a better bet. The bracket needs to be easily detachable, or the Psion easily detachable from it, with a waterproof cover. The Psion will then attach to the GPS unit, also mounted.

All too big you may say, but my present map holder is a fair size!

Boris of OrgII fame turned a Org II into a cycle computer (check out his website for further info), I wonder if you could do the same for EPOC?

Once mounted on the bike I will run Jaap's excellent Bikelog software (highly recommended and freeware) plus the normal route map stuff.

For those interested I'll post a few pictures of the project once construction begins!

Bluetooth.

I've read with excitement the Bluetooth devolopments mentioned in the digest. It would be fantastic if it worked. I could keep the GPS unit in my panniers and it still talking to the mounted Psion. Fantastic!

Viva la Psion,

Will.

Re.: Bluetooth adaptor - IMHO for the amount of Gbp 147.- and needing to plug in an adaptor anyhow I might just as well use infrared and line up the phone with the Psion and save myself the cost. What would be the great advantage ?

Answer to: Paula

Re.: Spreadsheet compatible to Excel - There is AFAIK no such program. However, with nConvert you can convert a Psion sheet file on your Psion to an Excel file although there will always be some small problems with the fonts and formatting (in my experience).

Re.: Which GPS - plus apps. - Thanks, will need quite some time to look at these <G>. I found codriver also an unusefull program, specially as the switching between the map and codriver never worked for me and if you take a wrong turn you've had it. I never tried Realmaps. Does anyone know if there is a map for Israel for Realmaps ?

Answer to: John Morris

Re.: Back-ups - Basically the "Back-up" folder is the latest back-up. Earlier backed-up files that don't appear anymore on your Psion are moved from the back-up folder to Arc001, next back-up to Arc002, etc. until they disappear. You can set the level of Arc folders in Psiwin. I don't think you can do a complete restore from older back-ups, but you can find older files in the Arcxxx folders.

Psion software can be found on Tucows.com.  Choose "EPOC" as the operating system.  Much of the software available there is either freeware or shareware.  Some works better than others.

Emily, I'm not in NY but in Philadelphia.  I've saved various bits and pieces of advice from this forum (and its predecessor) into a word file, at least those bits that I found most useful for a non-tecchie.  If you e-mail me off digest, I'll forward it to you.  It's truly random -- I warn you. The best piece of advice (probably not on that file) is to put a piece of a business card between the back-up battery and its slide cover.  There is a tendency for the connection to get loose, and there is a risk of losing all your data if the main batteries die and the backup is not fully connected. The piece of business card makes the connection tighter.  A related piece of advice -- back up your Psion to your PC often.  I use the calendar, contacts, and a freeware "quicken -type" program most often -- the calendar is synched to my office Outlook every time there is a significant change (usually every three days), and the quicken-clone backs itself up to the Compact Flash card stored in my 5mx every time I close the program, so I generally do a full back-up only when I have changed the contacts or have a word or sheet document I need to save.  If I'm out of the office and create an important or complicated word or sheet document, I will save a copy on the CF card just in case.  Hope these hints help.

Subject: Displaying Logos on the Password screen

Hi,

My company is "re-branding" and has asked all consultants to install a company wallpaper and company screen-saver on their laptops for use on client sites.

I can adapt the wallpaper easy enough for my netBook, but a PC screen saver isn't going to transfer across.  I tried embedding the company logo into the Owner Information so that when locked the logo would be displayed, but I get a message "Cannot paste objects here".

So I looked for the components that made up the password screen.  I found Z:\Apps\Shell\Splash.mbm that looked to be a likely candidate.  So I created a company logo Splash.mbm and put it in C:\Apps\Shell.  However I still get the netBook splash on the password screen.

So, any ideas, short of sticking a paper copy on the netBook's screen, of how I could display the company logo on the password screen?

Colin

Subject: Initial GPRS line fails

Hi,

I've had a minor problem using GPRS for some time and I hope that someone may be able to explain what is happening and perhaps suggest a solution.

If I have used a connection method, for example a PPP cable connection, then on returning to a GPRS connection the line fails with the message "Problem communicating with the Internet service's modem  Call was unexpectedly droppe".  Exiting the application, for example The Dialer, then restarting allows a connection to be successfully established.

I thought that corruption might have occurred in commsdb.dat so I recently started from scratch and now have entries for just the PPP and GPRS connections.

This is clearly a minor problem, but annoying never the less.  I would be obliged if someone could tell me what is going on and how I could fix it.

At a guess (well 'educated' anyway) the dial-up connection sharing may require a Windows client. If you cant get it to work may I suggest you install a proxy server such as Proxy+ (http://www.proxyplus.net) which you then use to run the dial up sevice and also can download your email in the background.

Subject: Darwin & Science

Guys

I really don't want to get started on this here but ...

Firstly it is not so much that observation and induction doesn't work as that's not the way scientists work. Most of the time a hypothesis results from the worldview of the scientist and is tested against the data.

While science cannot examine God, science requires a logical stable structure to the universe, such as is laid down by the God of the Bible.

As to Darwinism, natural selection is not the same as evolution since natural selection results from the selection of previously existing genetic information and evolution requires the creation of new information. If it were possible to have a generator of the new information then evolution would be possible. So far no such generator has been found.

Both Creationism and Darwinism are 'historical' sciences in that neither can demonstrate their prime beliefs, ie either that life was created or evolved respectively. Evolution holds sway because it panders to Man's d

esire not to answer to a higher power.

(I'll now pipe down and get off my soapbox)

It's hard to assert the former unless the latter is possible.

However, it has been measured by science, as was discussed in New Scientst at length only a couple of weeks ago.

Darwin's theory says nothing about development of self-

consciousness being likely, never mind inevitable.  Equally,

Darwin's theory does nothing to rule out such eventualities.

So why do you find the fact it's only happened once (that we know

of) affect your view of Darwin's theories?

I'm afraid your friend has written a Microsoft Windows program for Intel x86 processors, not an Epoc32 program for ARM processors.

So it won't work on your Psion.

No , this will require a complete rewrite of both Web and the underlying OS

NetFront 3.* on SymbOS32 R 6.1/Series 60 as well as  *CE on PocketPC 2003  ( sharp sl-c760/860( linux ) and Toshiba e800/e805 ( windows mobile ) does this by saving complete pages as MIME ( base 64 ) encoded multipart messages in a subdirectory in the System folder

Just had my 5mx back from Pinnock Organiser Services, what brilliant service for a machine no longer in production.  It had a smashed screen, screen cable on the blink, cracked case around the hinges, etc.  It now looks and feels brand new. The case & screen are obviously new, but so is the keyboard, and main & backup batteries were also replaced.  It cost £130 including return post.  I sent it Saturday and it was back the following Thursday.  I can wholeheartedly recommend POS, and look forward to at least a couple more years of  use out of it.
