Answer to: Carlos Rodriguez

Re.: Science & Darwin - You wrote "Hasn't this off-topic thread run its course?" Why, because you had your say and don't want to discuss with "believers " ?  Yes, I believe in God, but that does not say I can't believe in science. In the end, science was part of the Creation (whether by God or the big bang). I was not comparing science with the Bible, quite the opposite.

As a child my cello teacher and his sister had healing powers in their hands. They healed people, even blood clots, by moving their hands over the affected area without touching it. His sister had a practice, he only used it occasionally and once helped me off a splitting head-ache within 10 minutes. They died within a week of each other. Can science prove the existence of these powers ?  No.

Not all animals develop constantly. Some animals have been the same for millions of years, others have become extinct. So if we have common ancestors with the apes who all develop slowly at a constant rate, how come that suddenly within the last 2,000 to 3,000 years we went from ignorant farmers to highly developed species ? What made that sudden change from the millions of years before that ?  And why did we, human beings, develop this awareness of ourselves and other animals did not [they have varying degrees of instinct] ?

Beauty is not only sexual. I totally dislike impressionist paintings, my wife absolutely loves them and thinks they are beautiful. How can science prove this difference ? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, no scientific law can support that ! That is what I meant when saying that science can't prove everything.

If you say that "There are other species with self-consciousness and culture" would you care to give us some examples ?

However, if you think that a discussion with me is not worthwhile as I "believe", I will not be upset if you don't answer me.

Answer to: Euan

Re.: Darwin's theory - My view of Darwin's theory is affected by my other beliefs in life, true. But besides that, some animals develop, others don't, but no other "animal" has developed from instinct to higher intelligence. If it was all random and development, it is strange that no other animal developed along the same line. In the end, I am not stating that Darwin is definitely wrong, but it is one theory out of several and not like some people tend to believe the "only true one".

Re.: cycling holder - I still have in the boot of my car the in-car holder for the 5MX. It slides with the keyboard underneath two catches on the sides which keeps it in place. I am not sure whether the more bumpy ride on a cycle will be that healthy for the 5MX or not. If you want it to try and connect it somehow to your bicycle, you can have it for postal cost only.

Subject: SSID / Different SMS centres

Hello group,

(Did not forget the "o" this time <g>))

Answer to: Martin Guthrie

I deleted my own SSID name from the Malaybooks WLAN settings and then it just stays on "Logging in to internet service". I fill in my own SSID and hop... it instantly makes the connection.

Hmmm... it looks like a Malaybook has a different way of configuring LAN cards than a Netbook, despite having nearly the same version of the OS. I'll make some screenshots.

Answer to: Kevin Thorne

You wanted to use different SMS centres on your 7 and you notice that the 7 is not accepting the one that bills your "inclusive" SMS's.

I too find that the standard E-mail programme takes the SMS centre from the SIM, but it does this in a way I do not understand. It should be able to change this SMS centre on the SIM, but my Malaybook nor my 5mx do this. They just revert to the old SMS centre.... and I changed providers. :-(

A possible solution is the use of the (now freeware) Phoneman at www.zenobyte.co.uk .

Don't forget to download its additional modules and to jot down its register code (available at that website).

This program allows you to define many different SMS centres and it completely ignores the SMS centre found on your SIM card.

It might therefore be the solution.

I don't know about small, but you should at least be able to find Websters Encyclopaedia in TomaRaider format. I think it's around 16 or 18mb. A Google for "+EPOC +TomeRaider +Webster" should find it. Once you've paid for TomeRaider, all TomeRaider files are free. The only problem with TomeRaider is that the registration code you get is specific to your Psion's unique id, so you have to get a new code if you replace the hardware.

Apparently, the TomeRaider people supply new codes quickly enough. There are also a couple of EPOC programs on the net that generate codes for ShareWare, and I find this more convenient to use than e-mailing the software vendor and waiting for a code for my registered Shareware when I buy new EPOC hardware. Most EPOC software is not locked to the ID of the machine.

I have The Oxford English dictionary in both TomeRaider and K2 format. It's around 4mb in K2 format and twice that in TomeRaider format. The two files seem to include the exact same information. if you are going to use your Psion for dictionaries and encyclopaedia, you should invest in a decent sized CF card. Both K2 and TomeRaider are fast.

Unlike TomeRaider, the K2 software is Freeware.  Unfortunately, apart from the OED, there isn't all that much stuff available in K2 format that would be of interest unless you read Russian. Even so, K2 is worth downloading just for the OED. There are lots of TomeRaider files out there.

I don't have the link for K2 available at the moment, but it was discussed on the digest within the last couple of weeks, so have a look in the digest archive on "http://www.psioneering.co.uk".

Subject: Science & Darwin

Come on guys (and gals ??), it's obvious there's a wide range of opinion & knowledge about this subject, and I doubt anyone's going to be swayed by anyone from just a few posts...  Especially since it is (potentially) a very emotional subject tied to many people's central belief systems.

For my 2 pence, I'll just say that there are an awful lot of books explaining why Evolution & Darwin are our best explanation for why we are here on this Earth seeing all these species & fossils, and also how & why Science works and what it can & cannot tell us.  Richard Feynman (sp?) has written quite a few of them, but doubtless there are better authors too.

Oh, and I quite agree with psychologist & writer Dororthy Rowe's viewpoint on the Science/Religion thing:

http://www.dorothyrowe.com.au/skeptical_science_religion.htm

BTW, if you find her view on human beings interesting, she writes some great books.

Thats a pretty untrue statement, especially about the OS.

First you could manually read the HTML source code (which Web makes easy), and save the images to their expected path (such as "\images\foobar.jpg"), but that is kinda tedious & requires some understanding of HTML.

Or you can automate the process.  TomTom wrote a program to do this, but by all reports it is rather unreliable (and may need a PC if my memory serves).  It is easy to do on other OSes, but the only program I am aware of that works on Epoc32 is a "Snaffle" (which uses Java).  There may be some Perl script that also does the job too.

Once saved, Web will quite happily view the web pages (and images) in most cases.  BTW, it requires no special support by the web browser.

Subject: Atomic Time, MoonClock and PsiLoc+

Hi Folks,

I recently got my first 5mx back from POS (fine operation) and I reinstalled a few things, including PsiLoc+ (excellent utility). I then installed Atomic Time and MoonClock, which had not been on the machine before. Somehow one of the two utilities, or maybe both interfered with PsiLoc+ operating properly. As my other 5mx uses EPOC Task Manager (an equally excellent utility) I had not had this before.

I discovered that installing Atomic Time and MoonClock before PsiLoc+ rectified the problem.

I know some people have had problems getting PsiLoc+ to coexist happily with some SymbianWave applications - I assume that they clash somehow in their communication with the system. Perhaps it's worth experimenting with different installation orders. Perhaps the way these things "hook" into the system proper is not comprehensively documented and so different applications do it in different ways and these sometimes clash.

To be honest, good though EPOC Task Manager is, I prefer PsiLoc+ as it does so much more. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to like my 24 MegaByte 5mx (not a 5mx Pro, a 5mx upgraded). But perhaps I'll try again. The PsiLoc folk sent me a registration for the second 5mx (this one) so when the screen cable finally goes I'll see if a "virgin" installation works.

While this has been (and may still be) the main scientific explanation, some 'Creation Scientists' (sic) have objected that such mutation rates are too slow even given the millions of years evolution has - and they may even be right.

But very recent advances offer two additional explanations:

1. That mutations are stored-up in the DNA during 'peaceful' periods of evolution (where change is slow), and then during 'stressful' periods (where environmental changes spur major evolution) these stored mutations are released.  Some mechanisms have been suggested, and I believe are being tested right now.

2. A totally new view point on evolution has been to entirely *ignore* mutations (sic!) & physical separation of species, and instead create mathematical models of a uniform group of species in a uniform environment, with children being the product of mixing two DNA strands.  Against all intuition, it appears that totally new species can evolve without ANY mutations or separation of species!  Typically one species splits into two, but in rare cases it can split into more.  This looks to be a fast moving area, and looks very exciting.

I strongly recommend reading the weekly New Scientist magazine for the latest on all these sorts of things.  Popular science books are usually very far behind, and probably we will only start to have books on these subjects in a few years...  (No doubt someone will now point me to a book thats already be written about these subjects! ;)

Regards,

Chris Handley

P.S.  I don't claim to have summarised either additional explanation totally correctly, nor wish to enter into a debate about a complex subject which I don't have a particularly good understanding of either.

LONGER?  Yikes!  :-)

I'm sure you have put thought into it, but I think you ought to reconsider some of the compromises you made (or didn't make as it seems to me).

I can perhaps understand putting a "Thought for the day" in your sig *if* you have nothing else to put there of interest, but as it stands it seems to serve no real purpose apart from increasing the size.

The two lines for GPS Lat/Long & location are fairly understandable, and I can't really complain about them - certainly it is interesting, and may prompt people to contact you.

But the rest of the signature seems utterly superflous; 3 lines for phone numbers, 1 for email, and 2 for address, plus lots of padding.  This sort of information is pretty static, and has no place in a signature.

Instead I would suggest that you put all your static contact information on your web page, and simply put a brief pointer to your homepage in your signature.  Perhaps something like this:

> Owen H. Morgan,

> Contact me via:  http://home.no.net/naomij

>

> Yacht "Naomi J.", LD-9311 at 28°05.31'N 17°06.53'W

Such a signature is just about small enough that I probably wouldn't think it needed trimming.  BTW, if you posted less often (as some other people with HUGE signatures do) then I might not have commented on it either.

Here you are making the assumption that my objection is based soley on (1) bandwidth/cost or (2) space.  While it is true that the origin of Netiqette on this subject may be from such considerations in the old days, it also comes down to (3) your signature takes up most of Email's screen on a Netbook (and half on an 800*600 Emulator!), and (4) the fact that most of it doesn't change & the info would be far better put elsewhere.

Here's a summary of traditional Netiquette on the subject:

there are those who go totally berserk, posting huge creations with

to excel at these.   You can see the best of the worst in the

P.S.  I realise that the included "Mega Sig" is obscenely large, and quite unnecessary, but it was included with the original explanation about "Big Sigs", and it *does* make the point by way of example.  I certainly don't intend to post it again, and in fact I probably won't post on this SUBJECT again since I think I have said all that can usefully be said.  (You will note that I have already refrained from commenting significantly further on Thoughts of the day, despite my dislike of it.)  If Owen still wishes to post big signatures, that is his perogative, and also that of the Digest as a whole if they wish to accept it.

Is there a possibility to subscribe to this forum and get all distrubutions by email?

Or the other possibility: do know somebody an offline reader for fora for the S5mx?

This is interesting. Psion have always insisted that the software in these machines has to be recalibrated when the batteries are changed. From the above, it looks like you replaced the batteries yourself. Did you buy a battery pack from somewhere, or just buy a pair of AAA NiMH cells and build your own?

Ouch! I've had a Revo Plus and later a Mako for years, and my mother also has a Mako and we've never heard of anything like this. My present machine is a Mavo or Reko or whatever, a Mako motherboard in a Revo shell. The shell of my Mako was falling apart, and a fellow digest user kindly donated a malfunctioning Revo.

Yes, Itamar there are many maps for Israel and any country.  Realmaps is a bit map display unlike Palmtop product's vector display.

It's help provides details of where and how to download from the web data to make a map of anywhere (just give lat/long corners for the area to cover).  Also any DOS/windows .BMP map file can be converted to a .MBM file.  Many are available on the web - search for APRS MAPS - or you can scan any paper map.

To use these maps with Realmaps, you need to set the corners (in lat/long) so that Realmaps knows the area covered by the map.  Having a number of maps of different scale covering any point on the ground, will allow you to zoom in and out.  With a connected GPS an option can cause the moving map to zoom in as you move to an area covered my a larger scale.  Ideal if you have to travel between two towns.  Have a large scale for each town and a smaller scale of the whole area.

(APRS is a system used by radio hams worldwide.  As we move about with a radio and GPS, our position is transmitted.  All callsigns - like 'G4ENS-7' - are displayed. (7 indicates moving rather than static.)  This requires many maps, so they are a good source for Realmaps.)

Re.: Orange SPV - Until now I have resisted the phone/PDA combination. I would advise you to get the PDA you really want adn get a good deal on your phone rates with another "cool" phone that is smaller and easier to use. But it is not what you wanted to hear I suppose ..... ?

Answer to: All

Re. Science - I think it is right to say that the discussion about Science is "off - topic" in this digest. As I will be on holiday from coming Sunday for 2 weeks during which time my wife will only "allow" me little time on my Psion I will not continue the discussion. Thanks for all who answered me.

Re.: SMS service centres - Did you try to use the program Phoneman (Pro) in which you can manually set the SMS centers under Tools ?
