Totally agree on that.

Let me just also state that I am very much in support of signatures of Owen's type. It adds to the flavour and image of EPOC Digest. It shows the wide variety of EPOC users there are. It also addresses one of the most important weaknesses of text based forums in general; the lack of personality. People find all sorts of means to express their personality, may it be avatars, pseodonyms, quotes, elaborate signatures etc. I find Owen's - in all its simplicity - one of the best and memorable ones I have seen.

I am using a Vodafone Connect Card (that is exactly a rebranded Option Globetrotter

triband GSM/GPRS) with my netBook for GPRS internet connections (email/web-browsing

etc...).

For this purpose, a very good reference has been the article called "Wirelessly

connect your Psion S7 to Internet via GPRS" 2002-12-29, found at http://www.portal-pda.com/main.php3

I have started also dealing with SMS (via phoneman pro) but the rate of

successful sendings is about to 50%. I don't know why.

the card works QUITE well. my nB is relatively old and I have some problems

when the signal is not actually strong as it could be.

If you will follow this thread you will know more about it:

With the street maps at least, I have found that the PC installation program produces a .sis file which it stores in the Windows temporary directory. This is so that the .sis installer has a regular file to work on. So there are three things to do:

1) Figure out where that directory is; 2) Copy the file to some other place while the .sis installer runs; 3) Stop the .sis installer.

I have done this for most of the French city maps, which was so boring I can no longer remember the exact procedure I used :-) I think I just disconnected my Psion in order to have "enough" time during step 2 and not mess up the Psion with half-done installations.

For step 1 I found (this I remember) that for city XYZ a directory is created with that same name, with a few files in it. You may use the Windows file search function to locate it. Once found, it's straightforward to figure out where the next one will pop up.

Not being one for posting much at all (5 ish posts since the digest started) I feel compelled to post regarding "to signature or not to signature". Guys, this is boring! Haven't you noticed that the number of topics has significantly dropped off? Why is this? I think it's partly because this digest is meant to be EPOC / technical / anything with a plug related (and does this excellently!), but it's becoming less and less so. If this current trend continues I'm sure it wont be too long before the digest stops.

With regards to the signatures debate, can I be so bold as to suggest that we put it to the vote of the masses and close this conversation ONCE AND FOR ALL?? I know this is going to put an additional load onto someone to collate the votes, but I would be willing to do this. If required, I'll set-up an email address and people can send in a yes to allow signatures (of any kind) and a no to ban them completely. After a set period of time we'll announce the results and that'll be that - end of.

Just a suggestion, what do others feel? I feel that should be up to the moderators of the digest to give this the green light as they do all the hard work sending this out everyday.

PsiWin is the worst program I have to use and imho partly responsible for Psion's failure to catch on.

You can, and usually must, close psconserve and elogerr before trying any new action with PsiWin.  Press cntrl-alt-delete and select and close them.

It is sometimes not enough to uninstall PsiWin before re-installing the same or another version.  After uninstalling clean the windows registry using TuneUp (30 days free and then a good buy) or similar.

If you need to move lots of data, consider getting round PsiWin by buying a cf card and reader, probably on ebay.

Doh! Wrong file names!  They should in fact have been InstCtlr.Aif, InstCtrl.Ctl, and InstCtrl.  Apologies if I confused anyone.

Hi there,

All very well saying "new hard disk", but an operating system would help too!

Assuming it's WinXP that you're using...

Before you uninstall have you gone into properties in MyPsion (right click and select Properties) to set the COM port that you will be using for the Psion?  If it's not set to one it will be trying to access all the COM ports you have and it gets confused!  Also it won't always realise that you've plugged the Psion in if the system is doing something else at the time (windoze!).

Once that's done, right click on the line in the system tray and select Connect and that should get the line wiggling as it will know which COM port you want to send/receive data from

If you're using WinXP you will need to use PsiWin 2.3.3 - it certainly works on my laptop!

Good Luck.

All the best,

      Kate!!

I have a neoprene "Incase" zippered case for my 5mx. It has pockets for CF cards and spare batteries and a pen or two (for those Neanderthals who still use ink and paper I guess). Is there something similar for the netBook? I don't want to lug around an entire laptop case when all I need is the netBook and a couple cards, PCMCIA card, and maybe a spare battery.  thanks.

Andy, I too didn't have this CD and a very kind digest member posted me a copy. I'll happily supply you a copy if you email me your address. However you can, I discovered after, download the contents still from Erissson's web site. If I remember it's under the support section, drag down the list of phone models and select MC218. However (again) I've never got My Pocket nor Offline web to work. The normal error is “this device isn't registered” or something like that under Offline Web. My Pocket sets up the sychronised folders but when you ask it to do the business, it does nothing! Cheers, Will. Latitude. A dodgy pub in Hull. Longtitude. About 10 minutes till my taxi comes.

Hello group,

I have just ordered a new Ericsson R380 for 74 euros. It has not arrived yet, but can I just beam contacts.cdb and agenda to the Ericsson ? Or does it have to be one contact or one meeting at a time ?

The Ericsson does not come with a cable, so if anyone has an idea were to by this...

At 74 euros I just could not resist, especially when this is the 900/1900 MHz version, meaning that it should work in Houston.

From: Owen H. Morgan

Subject: The Evolution of the EPOCdigest

Dear everyone.

It's now more than half a dozen years since I bought my first Psion Series 5 and joined the UPS5 digest. I have at one time or another been a member of many different e-mail based groups and also had a period where I participated quite frequently in Usenet groups until the SPAM turned this into a loosing battle.

The EPOC community has always been the most enjoyable because of the almost total absence of flames, trolls, moans and long winded off topic discussions. For many years, we managed with only a few very simple ground rules: "Don't post the entire digest in your reply, Don't post in HTML format and avoid excessive quoting of the message you are replying to." The first two are now prevented by the digest software, the last is occasionally sinned against, surprisingly in some cases by the very same people who have been criticising my sigs.

People always knew without being told to keep off topic discussions to a minimum, and the few that ocurred were usually either computer related or humerous or both. Through the years, the atmosphere has always been very friendly, helpful and tolerant. For many years, I looked forwards to the daily UPS5 and later EPOC digest with the same feeling as a child opening a surprise parcel. These days I no longer have that feeling.

A few weeks ago, I stated in an off list e-mail to the digest team that if they started editing my sig, I would leave the list. I was then assured that this would not happen. In digest number 493 I see that the digest team, or possibly an individual member of the team has again removed most of my sig from my second message in that digest. This in spite of my comments the last time this happened, and that the message which was edited included the words: "The one [sig] below is the one I normally use for the digest." after I had discovered that the sig Chris Handley was complaining about was in fact the one I normally use for private e-mail which had been posted to the list by mistake. Removing the sig from my message then made the whole post pointless. I would suggest that the digest team in future announce a change of policy to the members before implementing it.

In the last few months, a couple of relative newcomers to the community have decided they don't like the way things are done on the digest and are trying their best to change it. If they succeed, I would be very surprised if the digest still thrives a year from now. I hope they will be happy with this result. My belief is that it is the sense of community as much as the EPOC palmtops that have kept us together for so long. These individuals are obviously suffering from the misaconception that the digest is a democracy and that their position represents the majority view. The large amount of off list e-mails I have received supporting my position would in fact imply that they belong to a very small minority.

This digest is beeing run almost manually (with the help of Rolf's excellent software) on EPOC palmtops by a group of individuals who are putting in lots of hours of their own time and quite probably a fair bit of money in connection charges to provide a free service. It is up to the digest team to decide the rules of the digest and up to the members to like it or leave. The EPOC digest was set up to replace the UPS5 digest and I for one would have expected the digest team to lay down new ground rules at the outset if they did not wish for a continuation of what we had enjoyed for years on the UPS5.

Now that the digest is in the process of changing in a manner which I don't like, I have decided to step back for a while to reconsider whether participating here is really worth the hassle and expense. This is not only because of the increasingly unfriendly atmosphere, the change of policy from the digest team and the large amount of off topic dross which to me is a lot more out of place than my sig or a couple of lines of occasional humour, but also because I am in the process of running out of funds and have just started to look for work to save up for my voyage to Cape Verde, Senegal, Gambia and across the Atlantic to Brazil in November. At that time I expect I would have to leave the digest anyway.

I am starting to doubt whether the EPOC digest is worth the money I spend on GSM charges to receive it. The money I have spent on GSM charges the 12 months could easily have bought me a month of extra cruising. I have for a long time been aware that participating in the EPOC digest was a luxury I couldn't really afford whilst cruising on a shoestring budget. These days it seems more like a pain in the OS than a luxury.

For the next couple of weeks while I consider my future participation, I will not be posting to the digest or replying on or off list to messages that appear on the digest. I will of course still reply to private e-mails.

I hope the digest will now get back to EPOC matters.

PS. Yesterday I again received an e-mail from someone who had found one of my posts in the digest archive. Thanks to the fact that my sig with my URL appeared in that message, he knew how to contact me and I was able to help him. For the first time ever, I didn't bother to recommend that he joins the EPOC digest.
