Subject: Psion gold card v. Series 7

I've just received a Psion Gold Card ("WAN Global PC Card") already mounted in - integrated with in fact -  a PC card adaptor.  I suppose this is the same as the Psion Dacom Gold Card?  Alas, my Series 7 cannot see it.  Does anyone know of any compatibility problems between this card and the S7? Or anything else which could explain it?  The S7 reads my 256MB SanDisk Ultra II perfectly well.  Perhaps the gold card is faulty?  in which case I'll have to send it back to the Sita shop (a very obliging outfit I've found so far).

Subject: SOS - Disk C, FAT Indirection Table damaged!

A problem I've never seen or heard of!  After some strange happenings on my Series 7 I made a hard reset, restored contents of disk C, and continued to get strange happenings (e.g., some programs and even Control Panel items saying "Not supported").  I ran CheckDisk.  On its second item it gave the message: The Fat Indirection Table entry 2 (Hex 85) is corrupt": a major problem which it cannot repair.  It recommended reformatting.  This I tried.  Neither the S7 format nor EDU Smart Format would work.  I have hard reset several times, the last time leaving all power off the machine for an hour and more.

I've run out of ideas (not that I've got a lot).  Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

PS.  Considering my posting sent earlier today, this makes a bizarre coincidence.

>PsiWin is the worst program I have to use and imho partly responsible for Psion's failure to catch on.<

The problem with PsiWin is that it was written for win95 and only updated for compatibility with other versions of Windows and Office. It has not been developed fully or in my opinion, tested and therefore out dated. It isn't even USB compatible. I find it impracticle for data transfer because 115K2 is too slow for many file transfers and a complete backup is likely to take an age. I find that having a CF card reader plugged into my PC a much better facility than PsiWin although, having a Netbook, I usually FTP data via a LAN connection. Even document conversion can be achieved without PsiWin, but I try to keep most documents in a more generic format such as html or pdf.

In earlier digests I have posted tips to get PsiWin to work without the need for killing the processes and restarting them. They should be available in the archives by now.

It's not Neoprene, it's leather, but still a good product.

If there is a Bluetooth adapter for the PC that acts as a virtual com port (e.g. com3), you're in business.

The Evolution of the EPOCdigest

> ... In the last few months, a couple of relative newcomers to the community

have decided they don't like the way things are done on the digest and are

trying their best to change it. ... <

I presume you refer to me as one of these people. Firstly, I don't know how long I need to be a member before being taken off the newcomer list, but I have been a member on and off for about 5 years. I don't even know what difference it makes how long I have been a subscriber either. Also, I am not trying to change a thing. I am posting about EPOC topics and EPOC digest topics and occasionally reply to some Off topic discussions I find of interest. This is what most digest members seem to do and I see nothing wrong with this. The postings I have made include information, questions and in the case of the sigs topic, queries, personal opinions and suggestions. No demands, no insults and no desire to change the EPOC digest itself. I have not seen others try to change the digest either. At most, someone commented on your signature being longer than the message and I in the past complained about 'Thoughts for the day'. These were not requests for digest administrators to change policy. They were personal opinions about other peoples posts.

>It is up to the digest team to decide the rules of the digest and up to the members to like

it or leave.<

A fine principle that does not exclude members from posting whatever signature they choose I assume? Or if it did, the member could like it or leave if the signature was stripped by the team as a matter of policy? On the whole, the policy of digest administrators seems to be: Do nothing until it appears that a thread will degenerate into flaming and strip automatic message tags. What has changed? Nothing. If they strip your signature, that it their prerogative as they 'own' the digest. You say it is not a democracy and therefore a few individuals are wrong in thinking it is? This applies to you too. You have as much right as the administrators allow you to have and on the whole, they are quite generous with what they have granted you. They have shut down a thread that complained about 'thoughts for the day', which you yourself are involved in, but have not shut down peoples ability to post 'thoughts for the day' by automatically stripping them.

>... Now that the digest is in the process of changing in a manner which I don't

like ...<

I don't see the digest having changed at all. All I see is a few postings about your signature, which you clearly don't like.

> ... I am starting to doubt whether the EPOC digest is worth the money I spend on GSM charges to receive it ...<

If the digest is all you use your GSM connection for, I would say it is not worth it. Even though I find the digest useful, I would not subscribe to an ISP solely for access to the digest. In your position, I would probably visit a cyber cafe, once a month at best.

> ... For the first time ever, I didn't bother to recommend that he joins

the EPOC digest. Thanks to the fact that my sig with my URL appeared in that message ...<

You proved the point of my earlier post on the subject. The URL was all you needed. No GPS position, or 2 telephone numbers or even the town and country. As for not recommending the Digest, I do not understand this. If the person asked:-

"Is there useful information about EPOC devices?", the answer would be yes.

"Is there contact information of people that may be able to assist me with an EPOC device?", the answer would be yes.

"Can I ask any question about EPOC devices?", the answer would be yes.

"Is it a useful place to get EPOC links and answers from people with real experience?", the answer would be yes.

The only question I can think of that would get a no would be: -

"Are you happy with the digest Owen?"

So I don't see what argument there is not to recommend joining. If someone has an EPOC device and wants a forum to discuss topics about them, the Digest is an excellent recommendation. As for whether signatures, thoughts for the day, quotes, jokes, witty anecdotes or anything else unrelated get stripped off is no loss. If they are kept on and therefore posted on the digest, they are open for debate. I do not see what the problem with this is if they are debated or complained about.

If you leave the digest, remember that it was your choice and no one forced you into it. I am sure the digest will survive beyond the one year you suggested, whether you are a member or not, because people still have Psion devices, find it useful and the administrators are quite liberal.

Just to show how little the size of the signature matters, I am posting my Stereogram signature. I hope it doesn't cost you too much Owen ;-)

Owen,

I fully share your feelings and, whereas I can understand you may be

saddened by the unfriendly exchange, I insist you keep your sense of hmour - and your sigs.

I also agree that editing emails is *not* a good idea. Perhaps unmistakable personal attacks, long and repeated rants, etc. might warrant it, but it is not the case now. Unfortunately there is no button marked "ignore", but may

I remind you all that it is anyone's choice to pick up a glove or press

"page down" or "delete"? ;-)

Sometimes the Digest is merely a sign of life from the Psion-world,

sometimes it is very technical or it just answers questions which have been answered before or sometimes it just doesn't do anything special at all. But even when completely off-topic, this Digest has been a regular treat for me as well. Occasional conflicts have been solved without significant

collateral damage. Time has come, I believe, to go on and forget about this one as well.

I for one thank you all for your contributions, whatever they are.

Hi Folks,

I think Owen is right.

This Digest is run by volunteers who deserve the support of those who want to use and keep using EPOC devices and those who want to help those who want to use and keep using EPOC devices - with humour and good humour.

If a majority wants a dry, humourless digest restricted to matters EPOC then it will die.

The bedrocks of democracy are tolerance and diversity. This digest has had both with a leavening of humour, often wry, sometimes broad but always good-natured. The digest team, lead by Itamar, have done a wondrous job and done it out of the kindness of their hearts.

I'd hate to leave but as I think Owen is right I might.

Huge thanks to Kits for finding that AOL has grudgingly, grudgingly opened up its e-mail to IMAP protocols.

Although initially reports say that Epoc5 can send, but not receive AOL e-mail (after installing the IMAP4 plugin), so far, I found the exact opposite to be true.  On my Mako, I can get my AOL e-mail through the Psion E-mail program, but can not send it.

It's got to be something to do with the SMPT.  Outlook 2000, where I can send/receive AOL IMAP, has a SMPT tick for "My server requires authentication," but I can find no such tick in the SMPT protocols of Psion.  Am I missing something here?

Yes,

There is a Proporta semi-rigid case specially for the Netbook. It is

excellent and costs about £34.

Inside it is just like the PalmTec hard case (I presume the same

company after a name change).

It has a handle and shoulder strap and you can use the NB in situ.

Also, there are cheap mini-notebook cases under £10 in PCWorld -

neoprene is good stuff!

Owen,

Stay on the Digest. Your contributions have been great for a long. long time and your unique situation has been an inspiration to us all.

I emailled you privately a while back in support of your stance, but feel now that things are too silly by half.

Personally I am fed up with the childish criticisms levelled towards you. OT as the whole sig thing is, some members must be sad individuals to put down something that represents a bit of personality, originality and effort on your part. This is being personal and hurtful and those proliferating it should stop and think of how nasty they are appearing.

If you unsubscribe from this digest Owen, then I will follow, as I feel it grossly unfair that you have had to put up with such puerile jibes.

I admit I sometimes enjoy reading good debates, especially when the facts and opinions are backed up by such incredible background

knowledge - but occasionally I feel a little uncomfortable at how blunt some members can be to each other.

Others have tried to quell this conversation, many, like me, have stayed away - hoping that some people will just leave it alone - opinions have been aired. Fine. What do you want?

Forget about whether a sig is right or wrong, let's stop being so petty and get on with communicating about Epoc, continuing the tradition that has made this digest such a valuable addition to our inboxes.

Sail on, Owen - I want people to know how much support you have for just staying you.

Therefore

If emails are in text format, then attach a URL which points to the full signature, iff (if and only if) the URL is shorter that the signature.

Yes, indeed. Download Alarm Plus from http://www.mypsion.ru/alarmplus.php .

Not only does it do a lot of useful things on your Psion but the WINS

version will automatically start the emulator with your city and

international information restored. It's freeware and works very well.

Radovan,

If you used the standard Windows formatting then it probably got a FAT32

format, which the Psion can't read. You should reformat to FAT16 or FAT12,

either of which should solve the problem.

Nailesh,

You can use PsiWin 2.3.3 with Osaris. This allows you to sync with Lotus

Organizer from version 2.11 to 97 GS. You can also download an update from

Mike McConnell's site at http://www.mgmcc.myby.co.uk/ that will allow you to

sync with Lotus Organizer version 5 and 6. It's also possible to use

Schedule+ although I don't think there are many people in the world still on

such an old program.

The backlight of the Osaris screen, and the Series 5 machines as well, can't

be made brighter with software. The general readability also can't be

improved much except by fiddling with the contrast.

As to new software for the Osaris, I don't think you'll find any. The Osaris

used the ER4 operating system. Many of the programs written for the original

Psion 5 will work although the screen size difference may cause some

problems. To my knowledge, none of the ER5 programs will run on the Osaris.

If I'm wrong on this, I'm sure someone will correct me/<g>

Regards, Jim

Do you mean 'a bad example' or perhaps 'a good example' (for something bad)?

By the way, I too enjoy your thought for the day. In fact, I collect some of them for recirculation. I hope it's ok with you.

Re.: The Evolution of the EPOCdigest - It is the right of any subscriber to like or dislike the digest and to subscribe and/or unsubscribe. However, as far as I am aware we did not change anything in this digest since we started and at the moment there are no plans to change anything either. You will appreciate that your signatures are quite long and while you are not traveling basically give the same information and we thought it did not make any difference whether this appears only one time per digest instead of many times [I never noted the differences in longitude and altitude]. If this is incorrect, there is no reason we cannot publish them all again. Your contribution to the digest I think is appreciated by many, but of course we cannot force you to contribute.

I use a leather briefcase specific to the netBook made by JaGa Associates in the UK. I seem to recall they also have a zippered pouch-style leather case that might suit your needs. I forget the exact website address - try googling for JaGa. The quality of their products is excellent.

technically yes , but with the exception of the Filewalker Messenger all bolt-on BT solutions require an external power supply so no cigar

Yup , that's the price you pay for a modern PC-style OS in your phone together with a color screen and always-on internet

Symbian-based phones with similar specs such as Nokia 6600/6620/n-gage and Sendo X have the same issues

When I moved from a 6310i ( fantastic phone , near endless battery life ) to an N-Gage to replace a crashed s5mx I had the same experience ( needs daily recharge )

>>It's frustrating that Psions and SPVs don't chirrup to each other directly.  Instead I'll need to keep both of them synced to Outlook.>>

Direct syncing between smartphone and PDA is still years away -if it ever happens - probably we will see server-based solutions where Outlook is running on a remote machine and your PDA , smartphone and digital settop box use that to sync

all the big carriers are mulling solutions along these lines

The big barrier here is the way email and contact/calendaring info is stored

Symbian uses maildir for mail and databases for contacts and calendar/todo , other platforms use various database formats

SyncML is great in theory but requires more CPU horsepower than the current crop of devices can provide

As things stand now the Filewalker is only available to corporate customers and not through regular reseller channels

They claim however that next year limited quantities will be available on the open market ( eBay is your best friend here )

First I will test the BlueGiga ( already one on order ) , the Filewalker has to wait until late summer
