Can anyone remind me, is the registration code for PsiLoc+ or PlBeam tied in to the machine UID. I am trying tom find out whether I could transfer these application (most important is PsiLoc+) to another machine. Just to be clear, this is to cover retiring one machine and moving to another rather than using the same code on both.

I will eventually mail the vendors but it's the weekend and I will probably get a better result here anyway.

Hi Tony,

I still own a couple of psion 5mxs though I recently bought an ipaq 4350. I have ordered a flexi cable as one of mine has gone the same way and I shall be doing a repair shortly (presently its in pieces). Paul Wright was very helpful and I would have no hesitation in letting him do the repair or ordering a replacement from him, his website has quiet good DIY instruction (though I do remember I had trouble separating my lcd screen due to some retaining clips, which he didn't warn about). I will most probably hang on to my psions until I feel sure the ipaq is a worthy replacement for my needs. I am also hoping to do a review of the 4350 from a Psion users point of view and why I think it is or is not a possible replacement.

Good luck with your repair

Subject: Macs/Mounts/Networking netBooks

Terry, thanks for the advice on the Apple site, I am embarrased to admit that although I found the US site, I somehow missed the UK one. As luck would have it though I have found a couple of Powerbooks on eBay that would suit my needs and the auctions end at 6 pm today (Saturday), so the sniping software is getting its chance to win something for me.

Itamar, I saw your solution to mount the netBook in car. Being as absolutely tactful as I possibly can, I felt that it spoilt the lines of an obviously very expensive motor car. I would agree that you would have to move your eyes from the road to look at the screen when the netBook was mounted on the new mounting system, but 1. I wouldn't look at the screen as I was driving along anyway. I did that once and almost ended up in the side of a car that pulled out from a side junction, and 2. I wouldn't necessarily mount it in its suggested location.

Simon asked about networking the netBook. I don't know if your card will work, but could I recommend a quick trip to ebay. There is a seller who regularly sells modem cards with 10mb ethernet built in. I have bought three of these so far and they would be ideal for what you want. His username is babyblade600. I have paid between 6.66 ukp and 17.77ukp. The service has always been really good and the setup of the card is straight forward. Look at this URL: -

It is set up from a PC perrspective and pretty much expects you to fend for yourself. I have successfully used it with my iBook which has built in ethernet. However we are having more problems getting my wife's netBook set up to use it."

Simon, make sure they are not using a VPN (virtual private network). As far as I can tell, there is no way to configure the netBook to access a VPN. Some vital piece of software is lacking.  --Chris

Hi,

have you checked the modem functionality yet?

At first make sure it works, then we can step forward.

Unfortunately the card is really not on Dr. Ian Silvester's list.

Perhaps someone knows if it works.

And what about your netBook? Are you sure it is release 158 (look at system screen, information menu, about netbook.)

Hi

I found that when I spoke to the author of iBattery in 2001, he also had this email address:  kre68

Using www.archive.org to get the last published version of his web site (from June 2003 it appears), he also lists this address: psionsoftware

If you want to see the archive of his site directly, use this link:

If you create a second profile, you can make it backup the C: disk too.  However, you will NOT be able to automate this using CronTab, at least without creating a special macro.  You could try this macro, although it isn't ideal:

PROC main:

FgApp%:(RightDrive$:(":\System\Apps\FastBackup\FastBackup.app"))

PAUSE 20*7 rem Pause 7 seconds (careful!)

SendKey:("p,Enter,y")

ENDP

REM Find which drive the file is on, and returns it

PROC RightDrive$:(file$)

LOCAL path$(255), drive%

rem Try all drives from Y to A

drive% = ASC("Z")

path$ = CHR$(drive%) + file$

DO

drive% = drive% - 1

POKEB (1+ADDR(path$)),(drive%)

UNTIL EXIST(path$) OR (drive% = ASC("A"))

rem Try drive Z if all other drives failed

IF NOT EXIST(path$)

POKEB (1+ADDR(path$)),(ASC("Z"))

ENDIF

rem Pretend file on drive C if all drives failed, so will generate helpful error message after return file

IF NOT EXIST(path$)

POKEB (1+ADDR(path$)),(ASC("C"))

ENDIF

RETURN path$

ENDP

The problem with this macro is that the backup will halt if a program doesn't respond to a close request, and that FastBackup does not close when finished.

What do you mean by "problems"?

Ouch!  Could be your battery was low when it tried to write to disk, although I thought the Netbook/Series7 wouldn't have that problem.

Personally I'd be surprised if it did help.

I obviously had my brain switched off!  New question:  Which program fails to backup properly - FastBackup or EpocBackup?  And which kinds of files?  And which order are FB & EB run in?

Regarding FastBackup, I can't see how programs taking a long time to start-up should cause problems, since they should only be opened after backups have finished!  And if programs are re-opening EB before running FB, then FB would only fail if the program was still opening when it was asked to close (in such a case, avoiding the use of two backup programs would solve this).

Subject: 2 Psions for Sale

After being a loyal Psion user for over 10 yrs, the screen cable on my 5 MX broke.  Since I didn't know where to send it here in the USA, I mailed it back to a Psion repair shop in London on December 5th of last year.  Much to my dismay, the post office lost it.  Although it was insured and the post office started searching for it, I was absolutely at a loss since I relied on it for so much every day.  I had hoped the post office would find it quickly, but I needed to buy something else to get by until they did so I bought an inexpensive ViewSonic V35.  It took a little while to get used to it, but it's not too bad, has a clear color screen, and I have the keyboard attachment for the few times I need to take a lot of notes.  Now, six months later, my wandering 5MX has returned home - still with it's broken screen cable.  Unfortunately, I have no faith left to mail it in for repair again and no energy to switch to another device once more, so I'm willing to sell the 5 MX to a good home with someone able to put in a new screen cable or use it for parts.  I also have a Series 5 that needs a cable as well.  Is anyone interested in purchasing them together?  I would let them both go for $150 US or best offer.  You may contact me off-digest

I have done this repair four times. Three of the repairs were successfull, one was not, but it is possible that there was something else wrong with that machine. It wasn't mine and I was not present to see the symptoms when it died.

It is not an easy job, but is quite possible for someone with soldering experience, a steady hand, a thin soldering iron and cajones the size of coconuts. If your son lacks any of these, he should not attempt the job!

There are at least a couple of sites on the net that deal with dismantling the S5mx and it would pay to study these in advance as it's a fiddly machine to dismantle and even more fiddly to re-assemble. You should use the improved screen cable which I believe is manufactured in Germany. I am sure someone will provide an URL. Note that the screen cable is different on the old Series 5 and the Series 5mx / Ericsson MC218.

The job is slightly more difficult on the newer machines, and you need to be particularly careful that you do not crack the touch sensitive layer when you dismantle the screen assembly.

I actually have a 5mx with a broken screen cable myself, but have temporarily mothballed it as I want to wait until I have some more money, and then send it to Germany to have the RAM upgraded to 24mb at the same time as the screen cable is replaced. If I didn't intend to have the RAM upgraded, I would probably have ordered a new screen cable and repaired it myself.

Thanks. I will be popping by intermittently. The economic situation is still not great, but I'm starting to make a little money. I made more this week than last week and I made more last week than the week before. I've also been a bit busy the last week as my Dad has flown down for a two week holiday and I have a new kitten. At the moment she's going crazy galloping around the boat attacking things (including me).
