Itamar's suggestion to use "the little program JBStopGo" is a sound one; although I am not sure if it is compatible with a macro for unattended use. I have used it for 5 or so years and I love it for automatic activation of the "Ctrl L" command (Remote link using Cable at 115200 baud rate) and the backup and reopening of whatever programs were running at the time JBStopGo is tapped in the Extras bar.

eTrex has the following pages (topmost) and functions (afaIr): - Stattelite (2 modi of skywiew and status)
- Map (breadcrumb trail w. zoom, trackback, N-pointer, etc.)
- Pointer (showing speed(average), location, direction, altitude, sunrise/sunset at location, go-to distance to waypoint, etc.)
- Menu (mark, waypoints, route, tracks, setup, battery status and date/time)
Hope this helps. If you need more detail I'll have to look them up in the small handbook.

Subject: Blasted Screen
A week or two ago, I absent mindedly left a package of frozen chinese noodles on top of my Diamon Mako on the seat of the car. When I next opened the Mako there was a big blue black ink blot with bright green, orange and blue haloes around it taking up most of the left half of the screen. If I type in the password, I can see a few appropriate lines on the unobscured part of the screen, but that's it -- not enough to set the machine to back itself up to my PC so that I can restore to another Mako that I bought in case of disaster. The computer part of the Mako seems to be fine. It sets off alarms at appropriate moments to remind me to get up, to leave for dental appointments, etc. Is it feasible to try to get a new top half of the Mako in the U.S. or Canada? How much is it likely to cost? (Does anyone have a good top half on a bad bottom that they want to sell?) I've another question about restoring to my other Mako, but I'll write another message about that after a bit more experimentation.
I'll be grateful for any advice.

Subject: Restore to New Mako
As explained elsewhere, the screen of my trusty Diamond Mako has gone
kaput. I need to restore the files from that machine to a new Mako that I had in reserve. Unfortunately, since the last backup, I have installed a new, larger hard drive because I ran out of space on the old one. The old drive is still in the machine and all the data and non-ap files are still there, though I've copied many to the new drive. But when I try to run Restore from either of those drives, I get a message that there are no backup files in whatever directory I try to open from, though I daresay I've not tried them all. (I'm trying to restore to my third machine, so there are two machines listed in my Epoc directory.
Does anyone know what file I should be looking for? i.e., What's the name of the file from which the restoration should take place?

Could you be more specific? What are you doing? Just what happens? Is it a real pdf file (it opens in Acrobat on your PC)? Does the file have a Pdf+ icon on your System screen? Maybe with more information someone can help.

Subject: RE: Netbook won't work with wireless card
Hi Phillip,
I have the same problem. I have some wonderful help from folks on this digest and in particular from Ian Chapple. He has hand held me from the beginning when I had a Cisco card also and I had the same result as you have. I then went to the Buffalo card, which is one of the most recommended for use in the Netbook. I have done all the things that Ian said and a person named "J" who was also very helpful. I have the same result with the Buffalo card. I get the power light and once in awhile a slight flicker on the active light. I can ping within the Netbook but can't ping outside to my router or anyplace else. I know it is suppose to work, so it might just be some small thing, but as far as I can tell I have it set like all the great help has told me. As far as I know you don't touch anything except the ethernet settings. I have tried DHCP and Manual. I am using the US buld 158, so it has the latest verion OS. I have evev tried switching off the WEP on the router and Netbook. Just not sure where else to go. Any other ideas please.
Thanks,
Bob

Is it worth configuring your access point with the MAC address of the card in the Netbook?
Someone suggested this to me recently (IIRC in the Psionplace.com forum) and I have known this solve problems in the past.
The MAC address usually gets entered via a web browser through the computer that configured the AP/router originally - and allows you to be specific about which cards are recognised.
The MAC address should be printed on the Cisco card somewhere.

Can you redescribe what happens exactly - error messages if any please?
I had a PDF/ PDF+ problem and managed to solve it after a bit of trial and error.
I presume you have tried re-installling etc?
Some PDFs are too advanced for PDF+.
Have you tried some different PDFs - just in case the originals were corrupted?

Philip,
you should try to install the card in a different device, e. g. your laptop, and configure it with the PC drivers. If it works in this environment, the card is ok; if not, you probably have a broken card.
Do you run encryption on your network or did you lock out any MAC addresses in your access point
for security reasons?

What do you exactly mean with "can't open"?
- If you start the application from Extras, can you then select a PDF from the File->Open menu?
- Do *.pdf files have the PDF+ icon (looks like a newspaper)?
- Is the application crashing in any way?
I have version 1.03 which works fine, exept for a few glitches on some files.
I just checked the \System\RECOGS folder and found two files (recpdffile.rdl, recpdf.mdl). They are obviously responsible for identifying PDF files in the system screen. Did they get installed on your machine? Or do you probably have an older version of these files in the wrong location (check all drives!)?

Philip,
>>I have the Netbook with the latest OS, I have the Cisco wireless card, I have done everything I think I should do - and it resolutely refuses to find our wifi network.
Our VAIO laptop happily finds the wireless network without a problem - the most the Psion will do is flash the green LED Cisco card for a couple of minutes and then report that it could not connect.
I've tried entering the SSID exactly as it appears on my access point - and also as ANY, which works for various other computers we've had here.
What next can I do?<<
The SSID (using a Buffalo card, this is called WaveLAN, I guess this is the same for a Cisco card) should be identical to the SSID defined in the router. Do you have WEP enabled on your router? If so, you will have to
set up WEP correctly on your netbook; an umatched WEP key normally causes the netbook to get stuck with a "Logging on to Internet sevice" message. I have just checked on the Internet, and it seems that the Cisco Aironet 340 does not support WEP. If this is indeed the case, and this is the card
that you have, then you have a serious problem; you will either have to disable WEP on your router (not recommended) or buy a new WiFi card for your netbook (the Buffalo one is excellent, and is not very expensive).
Hope this helps, Ian.

Hi Folks,
Moshe, if the problem is with all PDF files then there is a Psion problem. Try reinstalling PDF+. If that doean't work, panic (or ask again!).
If the problem is with just some PDF files then
a) the files themselves might be corrupted or
b) the files might be for a newer version of Adobe's PDF Reader the PDF+ doesn't support.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Re: Backups
Hello Andy,
I think you are right that closing all the programs before running the different backup programs will fix your problem, although it is a bit of a kludge.
Alternatively, doing all the backups within one program should also fix your problem.
But it should be stated that whatever solution you use (inc. Backup by Ralph Sprenger), you will likely still have the problem that your Psion switches off BEFORE all the apps have finished starting-up. The reason for this is that (AFAIK) there is no way for a program to know if another one has finished starting-up, and therefore no way to avoid switching off the machine before all the apps have finished starteding-up.
The only solution would be to keep the machine awake (or wake it up later), and keep it awake for a period of time which you found enough to allow all the apps to finsih starting. Either you put a PAUSE 100 at the end of the last macro you use (if possible), or otherwise you run this macro later:
PROC main:
PAUSE 100
ENDPROC
The value 100 means 5 seconds (i.e. 20 means 1 second).

I assume that your Garmin is NOT an Etrex then? This got me confused for a while.

yup. Note that you can only have the map orientated North or the direction of travel - which I can find annoying, and I understand some more expensive Garmins allow artrary orientation.

yup. Except not sure about "graphic of a road".

No idea what you are going on about here!

I understand that the Etrex models are aimed at beginners, and therefore don't have lots of super complex stuff that tech-heads can fiddle with, nor do they have the ability to store road maps downloaded from a computer, but otherwise they are fully functional.
Personally I am very happy with my Etrex, including battery life (at least in battery saveing mode). Actually, I was amazed at how much it did when I first bought it! The only thing really missing is a free program for storing and retrieving waypoints on the Psion.
BTW, you can download the (PDF) user manual for the Etrex from Garmin's site. It is quite small, and should tell you exactly what an Etrex can do.

Itamar,
Your problem of your Mbook turning itself back on has caught up to me. I notice that it happens pretty regularly when I have used the Mbook as an alarm clock and I hit the Clear button in Time/Date, quit the application, and use Fn + Esc, in rapid order, to turn off the Mbook. I'm now trying to figure out if I give it more time to quit something internally whether it might not turn itself on. Very strange. I'm only using the Fn + Esc to turn it off. TG

Jack. I did try Backup, but I had a problem with it. Was it that it wouldn't back up individual files? It didn't fit my needs at the time and there appeared to be better alternatives. Perhaps if Backup was crippled in some way, it was this that stopped me achieving what I was trying.
Tony. Are you using the correct version of the IP update? Just try using Sink2. It works for me.
Philip. Is the IP of the netbook static? Is it in the correct range? Have you tried pinging the netBook from the laptop when the green light is flashiing on the Cisco card? Which Cisco card is it. What OS are you using.

Dear Digestees,
I'm delighted to be able to announce that Pascal Nicolas has joined the FreEPOC team (in a background/advisory role) and that we'll be developing some of his programs further in the coming weeks and months. The first and best-known of these of course is Macro5 and I've upgraded it to better support the ER5 colour machines (netBook, Series 7, netPad, etc.). Revo support will follow soon and, well, for further details see the FreEPOC web site (www.freepoc.org)...! :¬)

I use Crontab amongst others to give me an alarm every day at 4.45 pm to remind me of something and open the jotter every day at 10.00 am and 3.00 pm. Now, on days that I don't use the Psion and the alarm goes off and the next day the jotter opens as well the Psion gets confused and stalls. When I switch on, I have to kill the jotter manually and than the alarm suddenly goes off again. When I switch off the alarm the Psion closes and I have to switch it on again when I get the system screen to log in again. Ah, and it uses all the battery power as well and I am left with a Psion without power. Unless I use the Psion daily, I will have to switch off Crontab.

If you had really done a hard reset, and this Serie7 is a RAM only design (like the 5mxPro), it could not happen that the Epoc Release screen appears.
Provided that you haven't inserted a cf-card with the ROM image.
I only own a 5mxPro but after a hardreset, with no cf-card installed, you can hear a sequence of three beeps and then see the order to insert a cf-card containing the ROM image.
> Nor does resetting the machine with a CF card
> (with OS.img file)
With a Serie5 this file is named 'SYS$ROM.BIN'.
Or did I misunderstand you?
If you see the Epoc screen after a reset with no cf-card inserted, you definitely didn't perfome a hard reset.
The secure way to do a hard reset is, of course, to put out all batteries (in a case of Serie7 only the main batterie), plug off the power supply and wait a few minutes. I heard of some Epoc devices, which only could persuaded to work again with this cruel method.

Has the pdf-file the right pdf+ icon or only a the questionmark-icon.
I could imagine, if you have installed pdf+ on an cf-caard (or any other external device) and you reboot Epoc, you have to remove and reinsert the cf-card to make Epoc recognize the files correctly.
If have this problem with Opera and the inbuild Browser. After reboot, all html-files are recognized by Web instead of Opera. After doing the procedure described above, everything is alright again.
Perhaps this helps.
