Subject: Navigator in car

This week I traveled with my partner through Belgium, France and Holland and we flew out to Brussels and rented a car with a navigator system, a Renault. It gave me the possibillity to compare this system with my own Psion/GPS system.

The main advantage of th ein-car system was that when you take a wrong turn it will automatically recalculate the route as from that point. The main disadvantage was that you don't see a map and you don't know in advance what route it will make you drive and whether you agree with the route or want a different one. The sound instructions were nice and quite useful, but I am a "visual" person and like to see a map as well. A map allows me to find a different route when roads are closed or blocked according to _my_ desires (intelligence).

Unfortunately they forgot to give us CD no. 2 which we needed for France, so great I had my Psion with me (without the GPS).

I think the Psion/GPS combination is better, but I decided to give CoDriver another try.

I can't remember! I think they were:

C:\System\System.ini

C:\System\Apps\Shell\Shell.ini

However, I do remember copying them back several times as the machine kept

on crashing. Perhaps it wasn't them at all, but was still Moonclock

hanging about...

I always (where possible) install apps to my D drive. Yes, I installed

Moonclock on my D drive.

Checking my email I see I last had a message from Palmtop User about subscriptions in mid-February. I have certainly not had an issue since then so thing would seem a little more erratic than usual.

In theory it should be out once every two months but latterly seemed to become a quarterly.

Answer to John, I am an avid reader of PDA Essentials here in the states--some of the Palmtop Folks and other Psion folks involved with it--it has tested many of the smartphones, including the A925. It gave it fairly good remarks. If I remember right, is been awhile, they thought it rather big and worked ok. They really like the Sony Ericsson P900 and the new Nokia 9500 better in their testing. You might try to find the back issue of a couple months ago, as it might be helpful in your choice. I don't think the A925 was quite as expensive as the others. Hope this helps a little.

By the way, I think I saw someone post in the Digest the other day that Palmtop Magazine is no more?????? I think I recently renewed my subscription to it and received another free CD from them.

I showed off my Psions to a good friend last night who is experiencing some pretty bad virus problems. He became highly interested as he is planning a motorcycle trip from Florida to Port Townsend and would like to have email contact on his trip.

I gave him the bad news about Psion no longer selling the Palmtops and then talked Palm and WinCE machines to him.

He asked if he could use a couple of his favorite programs on a palmtop. The programs:

A stock management program:

TC2000

and Quicken 4

I told him that even though the WinCE machines were a scaled down version of Windows, I did not think he could run his Windows programs on a WinCE machine.

Have I lied to him, or is there hope?

I am thinking of recommending a high end Palm unit with keyboard. I suspect there are some equivalent Palm programs available. I might turn him onto a Treo as he is also talking about a Cell phone requirement and wouldn't have the WProcessing requirement/ problems that I had.

I am saddened that I can't recommend a 5mx or Revo as I don't think he, as a palmtop newbie, could deal with the logistics of maintaining an essentially orphaned machine.

Keith I was not aware of the difficulty of connecting to the emulator.

I use W98 for my desktop and PsiWin 2.3.3 works OK for all my needs.

However, my laptop got a bit too old (486DX) and I had to buy one with XP and no serial ports. As a radio ham and a GPS user; no serial port is a major problem as I have many devices to plug-in.

I'm one of those who can't get XP to work with a serial - USB adapter. For my digital camera work (why I bought the laptop) I have a CF Type II - USB and this works OK.

So do a sync to a CF and then connect it to the windows PC, if that is suitable. Sorry I can't offer a better solution, as soon that will be my problem when I get round to using the emulator on XP - if that is even possible.
