Subject: Wot Phone?
Howdy!
I was wondering why there was no reply to my message about the Panasonic GD70 camera phone, then I looked it up on the Internet and found that the GD70 is a housebrick flintphone with no camera and very little of anything else. Seems the guy who was selling it got the model number wrong.
Well, that phone has now been sold and I have the choice between a Sony Ericsson T610 and a Motorola V600. I've got the Ericsson on load, but I'm a bit disappointed in the performance of the camera. I know you can't expect too much from a camera phone, but this is below my expectations.
Any comments on the useability of the Sony Ericsson T610 VS the Motorola V600 with EPOC would be welcome. My main needs are e-mailing and sending and receiving SMS via PhoneMan. It would also be useful to be able to transfer photos to and from the phone from the Psion.

From Martin MaxweAnswer to: Mike Dyer Subject: RE: Thoughts. Dear Mike, I recommend you do not fully retire your Revo. You might have good use for it together with the P800 regardless if you leave the Revo at home or not. There is one key endearing feature with all UIQ/ER7 and EIKON/ER5 machines; that it is possible to beam *all* contacts in one go. You can keep your Revo as the Contacts master database, which is much easier to maintain due to the keyboard and larger screen, and then regularly update the P800 by beaming the complete Contacts base from the Revo. Even your Contact notes will be beamed. My Contacts base has close to 3000 entries so it takes some time...but it still works. And this works without having plBeam installed in the EIKON/ER5 machine. If you have plBeam installed in the Revo it might open some other options as well. cheers Martin Maxwell Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia *++++++++++& Date: 4 Aug 2004 10:00:39 +0100 From: Philip Carlisle Subject: Psion Computer Hi Gang Has anyone got news of Issue 2 of Psion Computer? I received Issue 1 (Jan 04) as promised and had thought that the next one was imminent Regards Philip Carlisle *++++++++++& Date: 4 Aug 2004 22:20:01 +0100 From: Alan Morris Subject: Toolbar Patcher Toolbar Patcher is a small app that corrects an error in the netBook OS (158), whereby the battery display changes to a triangle in 3rd party OPL apps. I installed this about June this year (V-1.01), but recently noticed that sometimes the green level stays at full, while built-in apps display a true reducing level of green. Has anyone else noticed this, or has Andrew Gregory released a newer version? -- Alan R Morris, G4ENS. Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK. On these (virtual) pages, I had written a while ago about my plans to order the then new Palm Zire 72 as a companion - not at all a replacement - to my aging MC 218 (the Ericsson-branded clone of the 5 Mx). The issue was - technically - to enjoy colours, use the camera for visual filing, easier sync to a PC via USB, more confortable linking to my GSM via Bluetooth. Typing on Word and Sheet (I do a good lot of both) was reserved for my MC 218 apart from, of course, the three Windows PC I am using. Emotionally, the idea was to stop whining about our beloved Psion 5 mx form factor and Epoc being for now buried under the vagaries of Mr Market, and enjoy modern times, just for a change. I see to understand that our Editor in chief is not being very happy about his Sony Clié (a rather upscale model if I recall correctly, a NX 73 ??). So, what about my own experience ? Actually, I returned the unit out of exasperation since: * The camera button did not work properly. The unit being defective, this actually saved me from the doubt whether to keep it even if unhappy about it. * Construction quality was passable, but not all satisfying. In particular the screen flexes eerily under soft pressure from the (really cheap) stylus. * The OS crushes all the times, and this is much worse than ... Windows !!! Actually my Toshiba laptop running XP froze just once in almost one year. * The screen is excellent in brightness, but the icones of the OS are just drab. Hopelessly so. I just saw on the web a few of the screens of the new top smartphones/communicators running Symbian 7 (which I understand is the granddaughter of our Epoc) and I would have cried, if I were not such an old man. * The much touted (in the reviews) Bluetooth & web access was a joke. It might be easy to set it up in some countries, but Belgium is not listed in the wizard... Granted, I felt more spacey when I was living in the good ol' USA, but we are 10 millions folks here nevertheless! Trying to play manually with the set proved a futile exercise and could not get the bloody machine to understand my DNS settings. BTW, I am pretty dumb in info & comm tech but remember I could set up my connection in my GSM/GPRS and my MC 218 in 5 minutes. * I knew of the lack of a file strucure in Palm OS 5 (the Zire is running 5.2.8 I think) but this is really bad. I mean, operating the machine is illogical and takes a long time to think in these too primitive terms. * Graffiti 2 is intuitive and takes little to learn it, in theory. But it suffices an imperfect constant pressure on the (flexing) screen and some letters - like the "a" - just do not come up. So, nice to try once and then, "where is a keyboard or at least a thumb-board, please ?" * Last but not the last, there is no feedback nor help from Palm UK (that is, Palm Europe). They only offer a paying service, but should one pay to ask if a button is broken or not ?? In conclusion, I had ordered the Zire to try out the Palm platform, with a view to give it to my daughter (14) when a new model possibly running Palm OS 6.2 (I read not very well about 6.0) was to be available. But my poor girl does not deserve this fate ! She will get something else from her dad, perhaps somethin' running Symbian 7... Happy holydays to everybody on the digest and regards to the editors. Franco COZZANI Brussels PS: I support the digest being an Epoc digest. But many of us write about replacements or companions running other platforms, and saw quite a bit on Palm, so here it is my feedback *++++++++++& To reply or to send your own messages, subscribe by sending an email to with SUBSCRIBE in the subject.
