Subject: DNS address of Movistar SMTP server.

Hi.

Does someone have the DNS (?) address of Movistar, Spain's SMTP server? I'm trying to get my Sony Ericsson T600 to send and receive e-mails. I use the same dialup number (551) and server name (smtp.movistar.com) as I do when connecting the Psion through the phone, but when trying to send e-mails from the phone, it says "Server Not Found".

I had the same problem with my POP3 server at frisurf.no until I entered the address of the server (148.122.161.36), then it worked fine. I don't expect to be using this much, but all the same it would be useful to have it configured correctly.

Hi all,

my phone line has gone down and BT are saying it might take up to two weeks to fix :o/

First I set the laptop up with 9.6kbps dial up access , but this was achingly slow and terrificly expensive - £24 per hour!

So i set up GPRS as you pay per megabyte rather than for time connected. This was much better , perfect for a quick email and usenet session and just as quick as my landline .

Re: Psion Magazine , well if Will is as good as his words hopefully we shall receive issue 2 this week .

Even if the only Psion product i now regularly use is a Gold Card modem im still interested in the subject .

Philip Bister, maybe I'm blind, but I can't find a contact for you in Freenote's About, Help, readme, or on your web site. Have to try and contact you via the Digest.

Installed Freenote310c on my Mbook and set up labels. Every time I open it now I get the following message: "Tab Label Error 1. Already exists. Table label file cannot be opened. Default labels will be used."

Everything I've done is then gone. :-( Maybe you can contact me off Digest.

Subject: Netbook and P800

For years I used my 5mx, and although it was bulky it was great.

I then bought a netBook in order to make emails easier when on holiday

(I run my own business and get a lot of emails). I now use it on my desk

as my main contacts and Agenda and it synchs just great with the 5mx.

To replace the bulky 5mx for out and about I've bought both a Palm

Tunsten T (£99) and a 2nd hand P800 smartphone (£110) with the intention

of selling one later when I've decided.

Now the Tunsten synchronises great with Outlook (which I don't use but

had to install to bridge the gap. Lucky I had a copy!). And I thought

the P800 would be even easier as it's running Epoc. But I have been very

disappointed.

For a start the PC Suite supplied politely refuses to install under

Windows 98. (What? C'mon guys!) So a visit to the Sony Ericsson web site

shows that a lot of FAQs seem to imply that the drivers can be loaded,

and offer (without comment) the P910 version of PC Suite. So after a 4

hour download of that (35Mb!) it does _install_, but no luck with making

contact with the P800, even after loading drivers and DCOM1.3. The USB

looks as if it's really an old serial line in disguise with all the

problems *that* used to give!

So I've had to give in and use an XP computer I did not want to use to

sync with the P800. Not impressed, but at least I have a backup of the

contents.

However, my primary aim, that of synching the P800 and netBook remains

unfulfilled (Outlook is not installed on the XP machine and I don't want

to pay for a 2nd copy!). I did manage to send some Contacts pages one by

one from netBook to P800 via the IR Send command - although that locked

often and required a switch-off and on of the netBook to make contact

but so far the Agenda is not transferred.

There HAS to be a better way, no?

I've searched for FAQs and answers, even back issues of this digest but

does *anyone* have the answer to contact between the P800 and netBook

before I switch to Palm as my main PDA?

Subject: Life without EPOC

Hi All

Its been over a month without any form of EPOC device now, so I thought

that I ought to write in and let you know how things are.

I mainly use my Mac Powerbook 12" with a dial up connection, although I

have access to PCs at work with a 2mbps link to the outside world. I

also have a Jornada 720 which is almost totally unused except for some

SQL (or a very small subset of) tinkering. I have a Win98 laptop that

is gathering dust, but is there for emergencies.

No PDA in your life seems a bit odd until you think that the netBook

was not exactly pocketable. The instant on-ness of the Mac makes it at

least equal to the netBook, and then some, but so it should with the

price differential. Immediately the last netBook went I found that I

needed to convert something to a PDF. I started to curse but then

realised that due to the file type I would not have been able to open

it on the netBook anyway, so I could not have printed to PDF. Instead I

went out and bought Adobe Acrobat for Mac. The basic version is really

disappointing after using version 5 on the PC, which has a distiller,

meaning that you can dump most types of document file in for conversion

to pdf. With the basic Mac version you can only convert from within MS

Office. It isn't cheap either. I was able to buy an unregistered copy

through www.amazon.co.uk for £150 instead of nearly £300. The guy who I

bought it from had bought the wrong version in error. I suspect that he

wanted the pro version. I can see why. Then came the announcement of a

proper Tube application for the netBook from Chris Handley. Grrr! The

very app that I had been waiting for. I had never got on with his

original app, but then again I can break anything!

The Powerbook has sound problems. Too much sound! For some reason the

output volume, which is turned down to mute (!) is ear splittingly loud

when the device announces the time every hour. One of the drawbacks is

that there don't seem to be mapping apps for the Mac, although I

understand that you can download topographic maps and use them as you

would the RealMaps app on the Psion. I am happy to say that I have

found a GPS app that allows me to download/upload waypoints to my

Garmin GPS. MS Office 2004 is really good. There are a lot of nice

design features that are not in Office 2000. Track and Change has been

improved massively, although I haven't managed to get it working

properly on my Mac. There is no Access though in any version of Office

and so I am looking at getting 4D. I am told that it is a very

respectable RDBMS. What impresses me te most is that the standard

version is free to educators!

I can communicate with serial devices such as my GPS through the

keyspan serial adaptor that I bought from the USA. They are very

expensive bits of kit in this country. I have seen them advertised for

up to £60. I was really pleased to get mine paid for and delivered for

52usd. I have seen them for £20 on eBay recently. Isn't that always the

way!? A PC emulator would be useful and there is one about to come out

in October, or to be more accurate, an upgraded version. Virtual PC.

I may press the J720 into service. This is only because I need

something to sync with Outlook so that when I am away from my office I

can book people in for training by looking at a synchronised calendar.

I didn't carry the netBook EVERYWHERE, but I feel even less inclined to

carry the Powerbook about. It is just so flash that I am sure people

will imagine that I am showing off!

I am still using a 6310i as my only mobile phone. My attempts to buy a

replacement from a UK supplier, Shetland is part of the UK, but you

would find it hard to believe with the attitude of some suppliers, have

failed.

I am cutting down on work so there will be less money in the account

every month. This means that many of my desires, most of which are

legal, will not be satisfied. The plan is to buy a bluetooth palm, but

there are not exactly a huge amount to choose from.

Through this list I have always complimented Expansys on the service

that they give. I have seen what people mean when things go wrong. They

just seem to ignore you. I ordered an Etrex Camo for just over £80

which had a 4 day lead time. I placed the order at the local library on

one of their publically accessible internet PCs. I didn't write down

the order number - foolishly. There has been no GPS from Expansys so I

dropped them another email. I haven't had the courtesy of a reply as

yet, which is a shame, because if they can't supply I can get a

different Etrex, the plain vanilla model elsewhere. In fact, I would

suggest that anyone in the market for a GPS should look at

www.a1goods.co.uk (or is it dot com?). The Etrex there is the cheapest

that I have seen anywhere. Its about £47 cheaper than amazon!

Sorry that I haven't contacted those that have dropped me a line

recently. Life has been very busy. It looks as though I will be keeping

my GP2+ at this rate.

The last of my Psion stuff, mostly netPad related has gone onto eBay,

in the vain hope that I might recoup some of the money that I poured

down the drain. I note that there is someone else selling WinCE netPads

on Ebay. Ironically at the same starting price that David Lowe was

selling them for. My advice is not to touch them with a barge pole. Buy

from a authorised Psion retailer or not at all when it comes to

specialist kit like netPads. You might get away with buying netBooks

from the unofficial resellers, but let my lesson be a lesson that you

lot need not learn for yourselves. I can recommend Blackroc Technology

as being very good. Only their minimum order value makes buying smaller

items outlandishly expensive, and their curious situation of not having

collections by the Post Office, meaning very expensive courier charges

for anything that you buy. Not a problem for large/expensive items, but

a strange policy for small items. They were kind enough to send someone

to the local post office to ship the three cables that I only actually

only wanted one of, but it was very much a one-off. Getting anything

shipped to Shetland is horrendously expensive, which is why I assume

the BBC haven't sent us the masts for digital radio yet. Just ignore

me, its one of those personal moans.

So, am I happy with my lot. Yes, I think so. With the type of job that

I have now (IT Trainer) I am usually in front of a PC and have access

to my Outlook info. When I go home I use the Mac on the net. Its a

billion times better at that than the netBook. It plays Quake3. Not

without crashes, but I am not sure if the patch is an official one or

not. I should have probably bought the 15" screen model, but then I

would have lost the portability that this one offers. I miss many of

the excellent apps that I had under EPOC, but I have found many apps

that fill the gap. There aren't as many free apps for OSX, but once I

get back into Linux mode I will work out how those apps will run on

OSX. To be honest though I don't mind paying for apps that work. Only

one so far has been disappointing, an app to replace the vital

SafePlace that I had on the netBook. Would I buy another netBook? Yes I

think that I would, but it would be a spare in the bottom of a drawer

somewhere and I wouldn't pay over 100ukp for it. Its not that they

aren't worth much more, it is just that they are not worth that much to

me.

Plans for the future? Handheld computer - a Palm with no keyboard and

Bluetooth and WiFi. I just don't need a keyboard now. Phone - Nokia

6600 with Bluetooth. Computer - Mac G5 running OSX server. At the

weekend I misread the lottery numbers and thought that I had all 6.

Ironically my last ticket had not run out when I had bought the new

one, so it meant that I had won twice. The reality was not to be

unfortunately, otherwise all of my dreams would have been realised by

now. Could you imagine the kudos for Mac if a lottery winner said that

the only thing that he wanted was one of the new G5 iMacs? I bet there

wouldn't be a waiting list for him! Imagine the big smile on my face as

I buy a huge rocket and send the netPad and its vendor deep into space

with only a Barry Manilow CD for company!

Take it easy out there and enjoy your EPOC and Symbian devices. They

are brilliant devices, but no longer serve my needs completely. If they

suit you though, that is all that matters.

Hopefully, it would be fairly straight forward to port FreeNote to Symbian OS, although there would be a few issues to deal with along the way.

The main problem is the screen size. The Nokia screen would be OK, but the Symbian UIQ screen is only 208 pixels across - and portrait format. So some re-design work is needed to make it work.

Since the demise of EPOC, I decided to move to the PC and continue my programming activities for Windows. (Like all the other programmers, I had to make a decision as to what to do next.)

But it's a shame to let the program stay as it is.

Let's investigate further, and see what's required to develop for Symbian platform.

You never know, it might happen yet!

This made me think about a new name for this Digest. As it will include EPOC related subjects and as Symbian is an OS primarily for smart phones and topics will be focused more on the devices than the OS, why not "The EPOC Smartphone Digest". It also keeps that reminder that Symbian OS is EPOC at heart!
