- Series 3x file transfers -- Question for Steve Townsend
Date: 6 Feb 2005 17:04:21 +0100
From: Peter Rand
Subject: Looking for 'uniopx.opx'
I've been playing around with XJMail and wanted to try an alternate text viewer called 'pV'. In order for this app to work, I need to install a file called 'uniopx.opx'. I've done an extensive search on the web for this opx and can't find it anywhere. I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
Anyone else out there on the digest using XJMail instead of the standard EPOC Mail app? I'd be interested in comparing notes.
Peter

Subject: Series 3x file transfers -- Question for Steve Townsend
I'm grateful for the opportunity to ask Steve Townsend questions; thank you for serving as the conduit Itamar. Funny, the first thoughts that I've had about unanswered riddles go back to SIBO file transfers: I'd like to know if it is possible to patch the Psion program RFM 1.10 so that higher transfer speeds can be used. Remote File Manager allowed any program running on a DOS computer to see the Psion SIBO machine as a disk drive. I've used XTree Gold and Magellan with it to move files back and forth and even see text files on the Psion; but it is slow at 19.2 kb. I know that there were DOS predecessors to Psion Word and Data -- was there an DOS equivalent to Agenda that might read SIBO Agenda files without modification. Thanks! /Stephen Stone

Subject: Infrared on a Dell Latitude CPxj
Hello everybody,
I have recently bought a secondhand Dell Latitude CPxj and I am very happy with it. There is one problem between this new toy and my Psions: the infrared does not work !
It has Windows 2000 SP 4.
The Psion (mBook) has PLbeam.
It is known that my mBook works with Latitudes and Windows 2000, as these are - by coincidence - my company's preferred laptop computers.
The laptop has an SMC Fast Infrared port. I have installed the Dell driver that I found on dell.com .
The result:
there is no infrared icon in the system tray.
When the Psion sends a file it says "Connected to 'Latitude'" and 1s later "Other computer cannot receive files from this device"
When I put the Psion on receive it says "Connected to 'Latitude'" but on the Latitude there is no sign that it has seen another device.
The Latitude shows this behaviour as well with my Nokia 6210. It sees the 6210 for 1 sec - and starts to install the modem - and then fails.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
I am currently using the CF card - through my PCMCIA card reader - but I would like to use the infrared.
I am also contemplating changing to Ubuntu Linux, but I fear that this will be less Psion friendly.
Yours sincerely,
Thomas VAN DER ZIJDEN

Sending this again as it doesn't seem to have appeared on original sending.

Subject: Using EDUs/Format/reset
Dear All
My thanks to Steve Morton and Phil Aypee for their rapid response to my request for advice on using EDUs to defrag the C drive on my 5mx.
The open 'application', which prevented the defrag part of EDUs from working, turned out to be my old friends the TTf fonts I'd copied into Font Machine. Old friends because they always appear to be open, even though not in use, and I have already reported the problem in relation to backing up.
One suggestion made to me was to copy the C drive and then format it and restore. Surprise, surprise, it will not format because of the 'open' files. So, I have no way to get rid of the TTF files without a hard reset.
Just checking here, but will a hard reset do the job?
One other question, if you restore a copied drive, is the restore concise - that is not at all defragmented - or is it as fragmented as the original was?
As ever, I'd be very grateful for any input.
Best wishes
Philip Carlisle

Subject: Google's new Gmail service
Hi Folks,
Peter (Rand), if you mean 'will Gmail accounts be usable by the Psion Email application' then the answer is probably 'no - but . . . .'
While it seems you will be able to use an ordinary email application to download Gmail emails (POP3) from that account (and probably your ISP SMTP account to send them as though from it) the Gmail account itself will be primarily a webmail account.
The 1 GB capacity is to allow storage of eMails on the server and web access for that will be *de rigeur*. Basically it will be an archive of eMails accessible through a secure system that will run on certain browsers. It may run on Web or Opera but neither are listed by Google as supported. Listed are - Windows only, IE 5.5+ - Windows, Mac and Linux, NS 7.1+, Mozilla 1.4+, Firefox 0.8+ - Mac only, Safari 1.2.1+.
I doubt that a normal, i.e. non-commercial, eMail user will get any real value out of this service nor that a reasonably large commercial user will need it as their internal eMail server will probably suit them better. I imagine this service is aimed at smallish commercial operations who will probably find it an admirable and cheap solution for their archiving needs.
As far as I could tell Gmail accounts are not yet generally available as Google are still testing the service.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Nokia PC Suite - Installer,
Answer to: Bob
Re.: Nokia PC Suite - Installer - Back in the office again I just checked this matter. If you stand on the .sis file and _right_ click on it, you get a possibillity to choose "open with". Choose this option and you should see both the EPOC install as well as the Nokia (I can see my P910 one). Make a choice as per the type of file and you should be able to use both the EPOC and the Nokia one this way.

Subject: Wallpaper/Wins
Something has happened to my Mbook's wallpaper display. They now look sort of like you had cut the image into 3 horizontal strips and compressed the middle strip down to one line, then offset the top strip a bit to the right and the bottom strip a bit to the left.
I've deleted the files and copied my backups into the wallpaper file. Same result. So far I don't notice anything else wrong with the screen no matter which file/app I'm in.
Any advice?
Is there a list somewhere which indicates which 3rd-party apps have wins versions to run on the emulator?
Happy Cycling,
Keith
