Subject: Music on the 9500
I read with great interest Steve Litchfield's article on his 3-Lib site on how to double the music capacity on a Symbian smartphone without losing quality by going for the Ogg Vorbis format instead of Mp3. I tried encoding a good few WMA files stored on my laptop into Ogg instead of Mp3 and I must say, I can't really notice any reduction in quality by using Ogg at 64kbs against Mp3 at 128kbs, so I'm really pleased. However, I'm only using the built-in speaker on the 9500 at the moment, not stereo headphones. I have used my standard mono HS-4W bluetooth headset with it - obviously the quality isn't good using this but I love the convenience of listening to my music privately without any wires dangling! Does anyone know if there are any high quality bluetooth stereo headphones available yet for the 9500?
I'd rather be wirefree if possible.
I still prefer using the built-in Music Player to the Ogg Vorbis Player but noticed that the track time is always stated as 00.05.00 (5 minutes) regardless of how long the track really is on the Nokia Music Player. This only occurs on Ogg files, Mp3s are always stamped with the correct time. I find this rather annoying but that apart, I really like the thought of my 9500 now entering I-pod territory with a playlist of around 650 songs on a 1Gb MMC. Oh yes, and as Steve mentioned, use a card reader to transfer the files from the PC otherwise it'll take you until Christmas to transfer them over!

Subject: RE: Screen protectors
For my Netbook and Series 7 I have always used what we call here in the states transparencies. You know the things that people do presentations on. They work great on those machines. I also have a 5mx and MC 218 have not thought about using them on it. So, I am not saying anything from experience but I was wondering if we cut them down to fit like we do on our bigger Psions, if they will fit under the fascia by the screen. Just a thought maybe work at least looking at. With just a quick there might not be enough room around the edge. The reason it works well is that there is hardly any difference in the screen quality and they don't stick when you take them off.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Folks,
Rolf, you seem to have missed the point.
Even if *you* find the status quo of copyright satisfactory with regard to software others, myself included, don’t. A particular point I made was that software copyright probably shouldn’t be treated the same as copyright of the ordinary written word (my apologies to the shade of Shakespeare). Is this unreasonable?
Quoting from literature in literature concerns literary copyright. Quoting from software in software is currently a civil offence in many circumstances - the simpler it is the less likely it is to be an offence (how many ways can one boil an egg?). When quoting from literature the text is normally only used as a quote whilst quoting from software within other software is used for some function.
I said that copyright (software copyright still) might be implicitly defunct when the software was obsolete and I still do. I did not say that it was legally defunct. Equally I did not say that *all* questions about current software copyright were moral ones, I said that there were several moral questions involved - and I still say so.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Screen savers!
Hi Folks,
Ed (Kaneen), I bought some screen protectors a while ago and they had all the disadvantages you quote.
On top of that they didn’t work!
I threw ’em away.
Now I use a spray, “Superscreen Wash”, and I use it *very* sparingly. I spray a little on a paper towel and wipe the screen with it. It seems to do what it says it will - fill in any scratches invisibly.
Soap, washing-up liquid, etc. might work, although they usually have quite a high proportion of salt. If you use washing-up liquid, a reasonable alternative, use a drop in a sink of clean lukewarm water, lightly damp a paper towel with it and gently wipe the screen. Remember that the screen is rather more delicate than spectacles.
Also it’s worth getting a Pentax lens cloth. That works for me.
Happy days,
Phil.

I got a pack of about 10 (?) from Widget years ago - I've used just 2 or 3, so they'll outlast my 5mx. I wouldn't feel safe using the machine without screen protection. The protector doesn't reduce brightness noticeably. Response to tapping is unaffected - I don't know about writing, I hardly ever write on the screen. I haven't noticed any screen mess on the rare occasions when I've changed the film. Just allow a few days for bubbles to disappear after the film is first put on.
Widget don't seem to offer them now, but I assume offerings from other people are of equal quality.
Best,
Chris

Subject: Advice please: Psion Series 7 and Psion Dacom Gold Card (56k + Fax)
Hi folks,
I won a Psion Series 7 on eBay this week, and it arrived yesterday. Bundled with it was a Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k + Fax -- Multi-function PC Card (GSM & ISBN Ready). You can see what's coming, can't you!
I can't get the Psion to connect to the internet using the Gold Card, although I can with my Nokia 6100 and with my Psion 56k IR Travel Modem.
I have the following settings in Control Panel | Modem:
MODEM
Name: Psion Dacom Modem
Speed: 57600 baud
Connect via: PC Card
Fax class: Auto
OPTIONS
Loudspeaker in use: Always
Volume: Loud
Pause time for ",": 4 seconds
INITIALISATION
Init. (reset) string: AT&F+MS=11
Data init. string: --
Fax init. string: --
ADVANCED
Flow control: Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal detect (DSR/DTR): ON
Carrier detect (DCD): ON
Modem type: Fixed line
According to the settings on the Psion KB (http://www.psion.com/mypsion/ShowSolution.asp?solution=7172&Guest=English)
If I try to connect to the web (using EPOC Web) with these settings (and my ISP settings work using the Travel Modem and the Nokia 6100) I get a dialog box with the following message:
Information
Problem opening page
http://www.psion.com/
Access denied
[Continue]
If I use Opera 5.14 for EPOC after the connect dialog comes up I get a message:
http://www.psion.com/
Network problem
[Continue]
or
http://www.psion.com/
Could not connect to remote server
[Continue]
I certainly don't hear anything when it is trying to connect, even though sound is on and the sound options are set for always and loud.
Could anybody shed some light on this, or offer me a possible way forward?
Sincerely,
Gareth

Subject: Synchronising two Psions using both EpocSync and PsiWin with Outlook
I was wondering what experience people had, 'out there' in Psionland, of using EpocSync with two Psions (eg 5mx and 7) AND synchronizing with Outlook via PsiWin.
I've recently acquired a Series 7 (eBay is a wonderful place!) to use primarily for writing projects, but I thought it might be fun to sync it via IR using EpocSync -- so that I also have my Agenda and Contacts on the 7.
Today I sync-ed the 5mx and 7, and when it came to sync-ing with Outlook I got an 'error' message and it offered to sync from scratch.
I'm guessing that if I wanted to do this (keep all three Agendas and Contacts up to date), then I'll just have to put up with a longer sync-from-scratch every now and again. I'm I right?
Blessings,
Gareth

I've used several brands of screen protectors e.g. Brando, Fellowes and they all work very well - no noticeable reduction in brightness or clarity. There are some that claim they can be taken off and reinstalled anytime.
The problem you might face for the Psion is finding the right sized protector. Most on the market these days are cut to size for specific PDA's or mobile phone screens. The Psion's screens are a bit larger than the protectors I have so far found on the market.

Without wishing to embroil myself in this argument, I'd like to say that I don't think Phil is a "troll", even if he did let his emotions get the better of him in his last post. The term "troll" is usually reserved for someone who's sole interest is in a heated debate itself, rather than the actual content or conclusions of the debate.
Also, in my experience, calling someone a "troll" will actually make the situation worse, since you are denying that the person has any valid reasons for arguing. So I think the term should be used with GREAT care.
For my two pence, I think that both sides have SOME merit.

Subject: Netbook PIn stripes
Upon opening my Mbook after recharging it, I'm finding little colored pin stripes through the various title bars etc. For example, if I open Word, the top bar listing the font B I U etc. and the right hand column giving the file name and Spell, Fint, Insert graph and Insert Sketch all have little pin stripes of green and pink or red and green against the blue background. But Style Gallery and Pring are unaffected -- still slid blue. The same phenomenon seems to arise in all apps. Does anyone have any idea whay this is happening or what might be done about it?

Subject: Pin Stripes PS
P.S.: I now see that the pin stripes only occur in the top half of the screen. (That's why they don't appear in Style Library and Print on the Word Screen. When I shift to other programs, the bottom two items in that right hand bar are also not affected. If I go to the Time program with the map, I get little black longitudinal lines through green continents and blue ocean on the top 50 per cent of the screen. They don't appear below the middle of the screen.

Subject: Pin Stripes Gone
I recalled messages about pressing on the top middle of the keyboard, where a name plate would probably go on an Nbook, and when I did so, the pin stripes disappeared. I'm glad they're gone - but wonder if this bodes any sort of ill for the future.
