Hi all,

may I add my 2c? No need to ask for apologies, either one knows one crossed the Psion and will do so unrequired or one won't. This great place has seen and shall survive worse and it would be a lot less fun if it weren't for such a bunch of such different senses of humour and propriety... It is an enriching reading in any way... I don't care much about Evolution these days so I didn't follow the topic but I don't mind having to skip it. And yes, I would like to hear about the Palm from a Psion pow. Now if anyone were to initiate a prolonged thread on Micro$ from the pow of Evolutionism I might get slightly nervous, but that's just me... ;-)

best,

vlad

Thanks Itamar,
I am using OS 158 the same that I have in my Netbook.  I haven't had success getting it running using WiFi either.  I will keep looking.  When I try to go on line both lights light up---the power light steady and the activity light has a fast blinking light on it.  Then after some time I get
"General(unspecified)error".  I might not be far off but I have changed everything as far as I can tell.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi all,

Card-reader and MMC cards

More problems and questions. Bought a Kingston 1Gbyte MMC for my 9500 and a 19 in 1 USB 2.0 card reader. The XP system sees it, but refuses to read either the 1Gbyte MMC or the 128Kbyte MMC the phone came with. The 950 sees both OK. The reader does read a CF card used in my 5mx. Any ideas abour this any one?

Off-topic posts

While the parties doing these enjoy themselves (or not), it is pretty annoying for others wading through screens of stuff to find the five line answer one was hoping for. If you need to discuss, move them to private e-mail, another e-mail list or a newsgroup. One or two posts is OK, but it often gets silly, and then a) people leave the digest, and 2) people's questions get forgotten and not answered. Yes been there, done that, got the burnt T-shirt.

The digest

It is good to have it and it is valuable, so please do not give up.

Yours John.

Hello everybody,

what on heaven is the PsiXpda from POS Ltd?

It looks, walks and quacks on the POS web page like a 5MX, which is however still on sale (re-conditioned) from POS, wheres there is no sale info on the Psixpda itself.

Subject: Speedcameras in UK

This is a message for those subscirbers in the UK (mainly) that use Route- and/or Streetplanner.

TomTom does not support these programs anymore. However, it is still possible to download a database of the speed- and redllight cameras mainly in the UK (there are some cameras in Holland and Germany and one or two in Switserland) and to convert this file to an overlay for the above mentioned programs. What do you need :

1/ The database - go to http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php and download one of the files (the all inclusive file pocketgps_uk_sc has got almost 6,500 cameras. I downloaded the file via my PC and than copied it to my Psion, but there is no reason you can't do it straight to your Psion).
2/ The program  "MakeOver" which you will find at http://www.pscience5.net/overlays.htm (download the Psion one, not the DOS one)

After you download the zip file from 1/ open it and choose the smaller .csv file that contains only the longitude, latitude and camera number. Change the name to xxxx.txt, open it and delete the first line with the words "longitude, latitude,Name" (this is important as otherwise the cameras will not show up on your screen !). Close the file and rename it to xxxx.csv again.

Now run the MakeOver program and take the xxx.csv file as the Input file and make sure you take longitude first at the choices, the format should be decimal. Click on "next" and now give it a name ending with xxxx.ovr, put it in the folder you want it to be in (RouteOVL\Townname for example), format is Overlay 4dp or 5dp (I always use 4dp) order again longitude first and click on "make". Your overlay file will now be created. These cameras will show up on both a town map as well as a country map.

On the same page at pscience5 you will also find a program to make the overlay on your PC, but I have never used this so can't comment on it. It should work very similar.

As to the question whether or not it is wise to give these details to others as it will increase the speeding on the roads, I don't think so. These data are freely available for a large number of different mapreading machines and programs and I don't think anyone will speed more or less or drive through red lights on the basis of these data. However, being aware of an upcoming camera could increase your safety as you will know to expect sudden stopping or slowing down from drivers around you and allow you to slow down more gradually and avoid someone else hitting you at he back. Furthermore, there are no guarantees these are all the cameras there are on the roads and you could well still be caught by one that is not in this database.

Finally, on the website of the database you have the possibillity to advice them of new cameras that do not appear on the overlay. While driving, hit the Menu button, Overlays, new location and hit ener twice. The camera will be recorded on your overlay and it will have either the name of the street or the longitude/latitude details. once at home you can use MakeOver to reverse the process and make a text file of your overlay. In the text file search go to the bottom and you will find the details to pass on to them. You can of course also warn your mates on this digest with the same details (G).

Subject: Obscure error messages in EPOC WAP and Web

As I struggle to go online with my 5mx (via IR to a Nokia 6610 phone), I keep getting the following error messages:

In WAP (the Psion Wap browser):

A Wap request failed / Already exists

In Web:

Information / Problem opening page " HYPERLINK
"http://www.joebloggs.com" http://www.joebloggs.com" / Already exists

(It doesn't matter what Web page I'm trying to open, or whether I've ever tried to visit it before.)

WTF does this gibberish mean and what do I do about it? I can't make progress till I can get past these things; there's no explanation in the Help files.

Thanks,

Chris
