Come on folks - how about trying to liven this Digest up a bit with some Psion Epoc stuff!!
How about a thread on .... how do you use your Psion? Which machine do you use? What are your top ten programmes used? Which programmes do you use on daily basis? Any tips - for example I have been experimenting with Agenda recently and as such have three Agenda files - personal, work and a daily work log of where the lads are with customer details.
What are your favourite games and why? For those who use a 5MX how long do your batteries last, when you look at battery use window inbuilt into the machine what is the most you have got? Mine is about 8 hours. Anybody used Psionflexi (Paul)? If so what are your comments. Anyone used used the Mayla shop (Sita?) if so how quick was delivery? How good was customer service? Come on please..... lets have some Psion chat. Any tips would also be good no matter how random. I have not had a digest for two or three days. Sorry to be so direct but I love my Psions as practical versatile machines and I miss the Digest. So come on tell us about you and your Psions.
Thankyou
Mark

Subject: Reading Psion files into PC without using Emulator

As I can not use Psion Emulator in my new notebook (see my previous posting, to which I did not received a single reply, that I copy below (*)), I need to find a way of transferring all my Psion files (Contact, Agenda, Sheet) [data and world are already transferable] into my PC and make them readable by Windows XP OS.

Contact: I made a .vcf file but when I open it, the only accessible data is the first entry, I can not access further, the "next item" button being greyed.

Agenda: In the old days, I had found a way of transforming Agenda files into .txt but I can  not remember how I did then.

Sheet: same.  I vaguely remember having been able to read them all in Excel (at least the spreadsheets, not all the lovely graphs) but now if I open one sheet file with Excel it is nothing but garbled characters.

Emulator not responding

I had the OPL version in my computer. It kept being not responding. I uninstalled it (Windows add or remove programs), downloaded and installed the java version: not responding also, uninstalled the java version, downloaded and installed the OPL version: same: not responding.

Hi Thomas,

This is taken from the EPOC FAQ at www.epocfaq.co.uk
I hope it helps.

****************

Resetting your EPOC device - the options

All EPOC devices:

very very soft - Ctrl-E - closes current program.
very soft - Ctrl-Shift-Fn-K - Kills current program and restarts System.

5/5mx/MC218/7/netBook:

soft - gently poke a paperclip into the pinhole inside backup battery compartment - shuts all open programs, restarts System, loses System view settings, resets 'Home City' in the Time map and 'Switch off after' time setting.

hard - as for the soft reset, except switch on with the [Esc] key while also holding down both [Shift] keys. All data stored in RAM will be lost.
very hard - remove all batteries for 15 mins - factory reset. All data stored in RAM will be lost.

Revo/Revo Plus/Mako (thanks to Colin Messer for this info):

soft - open the Revo and gently press something like an unfolded paperclip into the reset hole marked '1'. Colin points out ('scuse the very poor pun) that a paperclip will damage the circuitboard if you press too hard, so it is preferable to use re-set software for a soft reset (e.g. ResetPlus http://www.mypsion.ru/ResetPlus.php). When you switch the Revo back on after a soft reset, it will beep twice.

hard - open the Revo and press both ends of an unfolded paperclip into the reset holes marked '1' and '2' at the same time. All data stored in RAM will be lost. Your Revo will beep once and you will have to press the On switch twice to turn on your machine. It takes a little time for the circuts to drain down so hold the hard reset for ten seconds before releasing. It isn't always easy to hard reset, so if at first you don't succed try again.

Regards
Colin Messer

Subject: PocketDos and Epoc32

Hi Folks,

I asked some time ago if anyone knew when PocketDos would be releasing
the version for Epoc but no one knew. I just came across this info
today and thought some of you might be interested in what PocketDos
had to say (see link) . Do any of you have any views on the likelihood
that PocketDos would  support a 1.44 floppy?

Although I use CF to port personal data between my psion 5mx and my
home PC, I desperately need to use a 1.44 floppy drive to allow me to
port work because my employer does not permit connection of any
devices whatsoever to departmental  PCs.
