Subject: Money back!
Afternoon all (it's sunny at last!)
Well now, it seems that Psion PLC are about to hand back about £100m to
their investor base as they haven't been able to invest the Symbian
windfall in any meaningful manner!!!!! They should have spoken to me for
a start. ;->
What happened to our collective campaigns and efforts to encourage Psion
to update the EPOC platform? Nothing it would seem. Even just a
fraction of the £100m rebate would go a long way to making our life
a lot easier. For example, we still read about problems with PsiWIn and
M$ XP SP2, why not release a friendlier version?
I doubt we'll ever get an updated EPOC Netbook or 5mx etc. so EPOC32
R.I.P. But a little spending on the existing user base would be
incredibly useful, and very much appreciated. I'm sure even the boffins
at Teklogix have already written decent, solid up-to-date software for
in-house use. Why not release it on an unsupported basis if money
worries them that much?
The report in The Guardian (08 July 2005) mentioned that Psion Teklogix
are aiming for market share of wireless devices and RFID,...
excellent,... as long as there is a commercial future for the OS and
company then I cannot criticise too much, but they really ought not to
lose too much distance from their userbase, we still have purpose and a
technical/critical usefulness, and a vast amount of of sotware and
programmers; and we like the product, what more could a PLC want?

Peter

Strange. I have been using the OPL emulator for many years with several
different computers. Are you sure that you installed the program in the root
of your drive?

Did you use PsiWin (Start/PsiWin/Convert Files) to convert the Psion Sheet
file into Excel files?

By not responding, do you mean the emulator didn't open, or when you try to
open something in it you get some sort of error message? If the latter, Did
you install the wins opxs? They are available on my web site, amongst other
places.

Subject: My 5mx
Hi Folks,
Marky, I appreciate your post, really I do, but the threads you suggest, and
many others, have been done, done, and done again.
That doesn’t mean that I think any of them are done to death, far from it.
But unfortunately my platforms of choice (SIBO and ER5) are *effectively*
limited in appeal to a few thousand world-wide - and less than a thousand of
whom subscribe to this Digest (the G*t*s operating systems are much more
popular, and less reliable, and continually updated, which they need to be).
This means that most Psioneers will already have read the opinions I have
read.
To address your point about which apps I use (ER5 on my 5mx), of the built-in
apps I use Agenda and Email far more than any other. This post was written in
Word. I also use HTML Designer, RMRFTP, Opera, RMRNews, Ebook and nOPLplus a
lot. I don’t often play games but I’ve got a few that I do occasionally use -
Œdipus, Sokoboxx, FrotzS5 and, of course, Bomz5. Utilities are Merlin,
Macro5, StickyKeys, NetUtils, nConvert and nSISutils.
But this list is far from exhaustive!
My 5mx is my constant companion, an extension to my memory and more. A PDA,
yes, but a computer first. There are books, my diary, my website and my
electronic communication on it. There is my shopping list (I prefer Paul
Laterveer’s ShopCL to the RMR effort) which I use in Sainsbury’s as I hate
Waitrose, my only practical alternative. I’ve even played audiobooks on it
(in Sainsbury’s tea shop).
But I’m a little concerned about your battery usage. 8 hours is not long,
even for the rechargeables I use (NiMH, 2100 mAH). I’d expect over 20 hours
of use from alkalines and 15 at worst.
And if that 8 hours includes standby time I’d actually be very worried!
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Emulator abd Converion
Hi Folks,
Nic, I don’t use XP but before I had a Windoze portable I backed up to my Mac
using the free JPL, J(ava)P(sion)L(ink). There are several versions, all
released under the GPL. Though I didn’t use them there are several convertors.
But I’m sure there are ways of getting the emulator to work under XP - I
think it’s been done before.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Libretto
I'm in that group on this digest that hold the opinions that Psion/EPOC ended
with ER5 and that Windows is the worst OS ever.
However being realistic, windows is the only OS for many programs that are
only available for windows.
I've just read that Toshiba is re-launching it's Libretto. Being just
smaller than my nB & 7, in height, width, depth, battery life and screen
size; it will be welcomed by many. Only real disadvantage being the cost;
£1249 + VAT.

Subject: Epoc matters
Quite right! There is very little now to keep the old-style readers faithful
to the Digest.
I am writing this on my 5mx at our house in France. I shall shortly send it
using the Travel Modem I bought from a Digester in the USA following some
very helpful advice from several others.
I am a Word man - both the program and the Dictionary utility. I use Jotter
to collect notes about all sorts of things. Its indexing aspect is very
useful. I keep simple domestic accounts on a Sheet document and synchronise
with my PC via Copy Anywhere. I play a version of Hangman which I downloaded
from German site.
I shall continue to receive the Digest. I may need advice in the future.
As ever,

Subject: Windows XP Pro & PsiWin V2.3.3
Hi everyone,
I used PsiWin V2.3.3 very successfully on my old (well nor that old - Pentium
4, 1.7GHz) Windows ME machine, but now I have built a "Super Computer", a
Pentium 4, 3.4GHz, with 6 (yes, SIX !) 200GB hard drives, top of the range
video card etc etc and am now using Windows XP Pro SP2.
I know it probably a 'step back in time' thing but I would like to put PsiWin
V2.3.3 onto the new machine so I can then sync and put new programs on my
Revo, 5mx and netBook again.
As I say, PsiWin worked great for everything on Windows ME, but has anyone
used it on XP and are there any problems ?
Help please !
Kindest Regards,
Steve D.
P.S. Hope this Psion question keeps you happy Mark ! (First article on Digest

Setting up the emulator can be a bit trick but should nevertheless be
possible. Can you be more specific about "not responding". What is the
directory structure you have created? Did you change the INI files of the
emulator?

Extremely unlikley IMHO. Even if they actually do ever release PocketDos for
EPOC, they'd have to release specific drivers to support the hardware of a
floppy drive. And then you've got the hardware interface itself to worry
about...

Not even USB drives (I'm thinking of a small USB<>CF adapter)? Or do you
mean that they won't let you install s/w onto their machines? Do they have
IR ports already perhaps? In the worst case scenario, you can of course
email stuff to a private email account that you collect on your 5mx...

Why not just install PsiWin? Alternatively you might like to try 2ConnectU -
available on the Lost & Found section of my website...

Well said that man. I feel guilty that I don't contribute to The DIgest more
often but plead mitigating circumstances my Psion time is limited these days
by all the other commitments that life™ throws at you. What little time I
have is spent maintaining and adding to my www.Pscience5.net website. With
there being increasingly fewer Psion sites that are regularly updated, I feel
it increasingly important that I try to keep it going. It gets updated
(usually with new files) at least every 2 or 3 days - although currently it's
pretty much every day (with perhaps a day off for weekends!). So ends my
defence, M'lud...

Subject: WiFi areas
Hi,
Recently in Portsmouth for the International Fleet review I was in a Marina
with free Wireless broadband. I tried to connect and Netstat showed a
connection status and connected to but I couldn't log on. The providers
themselves were unable to understand that my machine needed a network name
and ssid. I tried to use the info given by Netstat but it didn't work. I
gather centrino machines take you to their website where you log in but of
course I couldn't do this. Can anyone tell me how these sites can be used on
a psion?

Subject: Tiscali dial-up 'Login failure' messages
Hi,
Has anyone had the problem of getting repeated login failure messages when
trying to access Tiscali email?
I'm using the Psion Email app on a 5mx; I'm accessing Tiscali by dial-up; I
know the mailbox has messages in it; I successfully connect to the mailbox,
but the only email I collect reads:
>>
Login Failure
... You have mistyped your username or are not registered for this service.
Please check that you have entered your username in lower case in the format
<address truncated>ensuring you have entered a valid domain such as
tiscali.co.uk, lineone.net, tinyworld.co.uk or worldonline.co.uk.
>>
Needless to say, the username is entered correctly in my Internet service
settings in the 5mx control panel. This has happened with all of the email
addresses I've set up with Tiscali.
I've tried putting my user name in both the form
<address truncated>and the form "chriscooper44".
Although I've previously viewed my Tiscali mailbox on the Web, I'm now logged
off from the account.
I have occasionally succeeded in picking up emails, but I don't know what I
did differently on those occasions.
I don't know what to try next.
TIA,
Chris
