Dear Chris,
<< ... It needs to be WAP because I don't - yet - subscribe to O2's
Mobile Internet service, which permits GPRS Web-surfing ... >>
That's where your problem lies as you're using a WAP client on the
Psion and the mobile phone as an external 'modem'. Though modem is
the wrong word for the function the phone performs, what the phone
does in 'modem mode' is to use a general purpose GPRS data
connection. Exactly the type of connection you're not subscribed to.
What happens is that a GPRS connection is made as you do have some
GPRS privileges with O2. It's when you try to use the connection that
things don't go your way.
<< How do I get past this? >>
You can't as the O2 network effectively sees what you want to do,
checks whether you're allowed to do it and refuses to play ball.

Yes, that sounds the way to do it but how do I turn it off? I don't have the router manual any more - can it be done from the laptop's settings?
<WEP is always the biggest problem, because you have to ensure that the key used by your router is also used by your 9500... Is it possible to see the installed WEP key in the laptop's configuration page? The only WEP key info I can see is "********" in the wireless network settings.

<<Woe. I can't find an adhesive or bonding agent that holds the
plastic on the Psions. I've tried Crazy Glue (cyanoacrylate), ABS bonding

I've not tried it on a Psion, but Gorilla Glue might work. For details, see

Subject: RE: Still no 9500 or 9300 here in the States with providers
I hope that I didn't speak to soon on the 9290. I found a good deal on one and have purchased it. Its new and still in the box. I haven't received it yet. I use my machines for mostly email, web browsing, phone and PIM applications. It doesn't have WiFi or Bluetooth but it does have IR, which I am used to on my Psions. So I hope it is a good purchase---I think it will be and a lot cheaper than the 9500 or 9300. Also I would like to have had a phone that I can use in the UK also, but it looks like you can't on the 9290, so I was wondering when I take my trips there do you have like we have here mobile phones you can buy and buy minutes on a card so that you can use as necessary???
Thanks,
Bobby

Subject: Connection to GPRS via Sony Ericsson phone
Hello,
I am trying to connect to SFR's GPRS Wap network (France) using a Psion 5mx and a Sony Ericsson K300i as the modem. Using the Psion's e-mail program or "The Dialer" , the phone won't dial or even light up. I get an error message that the modem is not responding. I've tried the initialization strings ATZ and AT&F (AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wapsfr" for the data string) with no success. I have tried with fax class set to "auto" and set to "1", with carrier detect on or off, phone set to mobile or fixed line with "wait for dial tone" off. Nothing has worked. I have installed the mobile connection update, version 2, on the Psion.
Using the Psion's Comms program, ATD*99# wakes the modem up and dials it and I get a connection. Unfortunately, I have no script to take it through the connection from there. I can use Phone Manager with this phone. It seems like the problem is the Psion e-mail program.
I'm able to use my Windows laptop to connect to GPRS Web and Wap with this phone, so I know it works.
Is there any way to make the Psion dial this phone and connect to GPRS WAP?
Thanks for any help.
Rick Mitchell

Subject: Re: netbook type, Handy Databank
Tom,
>> 1. Can anyone tell me whether my machine is a 7/netbook/malaybook/7book?!
The specs are:
"series 7" badge above keyboard
Machine:
type: series 7
software: 1.05(254)
Hardware:
processor: SA-1100
speed: 191.692MHz
ROM 13M
RAM 19M
About netbook info:
Epoc release 5
version 1.05(254) - English (UK) - ASCII (Build 156)
Note, I installed the OS so don't take this as an authority on what the
machine is!<<
If you installed the OS yourself, it is certainly *not* a Series 7. Also, judging from the clock speed, your machine definitely has a netbook personality module fitted. If it has a 7 badge, then it is a 7Book, which would probably benefit from the latest version of the OS [1.05(450)].
>> 2. Can I use this machine with a wifi card for wireless network/internet
access?<<
Yes you can, with the right WiFi card; the Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP is very good, and I have been happily using this for the last 2 1/2 years.
>> 3. Does anyone have a problem with the screen on the 7 dimming and the
touch sensitivity becoming out by about 1/2 an inch? Solution seems to be
pressing down on the series 7 tab above the keyboard - is there a more
permanent fix than this?<<
This is a known problem, and, without dismantling your Psion, pressing the badge is the only solution. I have to do this several times a week...

Alan,
>>I’m most interested in the Handyday 2005 and the Handy Databank – which I’m
told is like the old Psion Data application. At this point, I’ve just
downloaded the package, installed and registered them so other than the
fact that they run on my P910i, I have no opinion to offer on how good, bad
or indifferent they are.<<
I've been using Handy Databank for the last 5 months or os, and it really is comparable with Psion Data. It is simple and it is basic, but it's also quick to open (even a 6000 entry work phone database), though searching can be a bit slow in a large file.
Cheers, Ian

Subject: Nokia 9500
Answer to: Mike Dyer
Re. Nokia 9500 - Yes, but two fingers on a 9500 will not be that much faster than writing on the P910 screen or using the on screen keyboard which also works not that badly either. It is with larger text input that it does get annoying.
--
Hi Itamar,
well you have more patience than me !,
I tried and tried to bond with Uiq but the onscreen keyboard was too small and fiddly to write long emails on for me, and the handwriting system was slow and clumsy.
Ask an experienced ex Revo owner, or series 3 owner how fast they can type with two fingers...
Bluetooth keyboards are lovely but you wind up carring two boxes around again *argh*.
I'm happy with my Treo 600 for now, it does everything I need. If Nokia ever fit a vibrate alert and a camera to a 9300 sized communicator then I would be tempted back to Symbian.
I still miss my Revo+ and would like a colour clamshell, but it needs to be a competant phone as well and sadly Nokia aren't getting this right at the moment.
Regards,
Mike Dyer.

Subject: plastic bonding agent, Copying of Contacts from P910, PDA and extra keyboard,
Answer to: Stephen Stone
Re.: plastic bonding agent - Being from the UK I don't know wha type of glews these are, but in Europe they sell socalled "Superglue" which should certainly glue plastics together to create a very strong bond. Does that exist in te USA as well ? Alternatively, send them to someone in the UK who can send them on to POS for you.

Re.: Copying of Contacts from P910 - Thanks for the answers, Outlook is indeed an option. Another question. My clients details are part of the total file which has been sub-divided in "Business", "Personal" and "Photography clients" amongst others. Is there any way I can choose only the Photo clients to show / appear ? Is this something I can do afterwards in Outlook ?
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re.: PDA and extra keyboard - A colleague of mine just bought a bluetooth keyboard and I had a chance to play around with it a little with my P910. It certainly works a lot better than the thumbboard on the P910. It folded flat quite easily and I could download the drivers via the internet straight on my P910 (there is a special website for mobile phone users to download the drivers only). There is a small holder that flips out of the keyboard and with a bit of experience it certainly is usable. However, than I looked at the magazine that came with the keyboard and I noticed that the virtual keyboard is really there, for sale, at abt. 50 pounds more than the bluetooth one. The virtual keyboard also works on bluetooth and is just a smallish plastic holder that you put on the table, switch on and it projects a keyboard on the table or any flat surface. When you touch the "keys" on the table it will work like a keyboard. Now that would be, although more expensive, a better solution as it will not be that difficult to carry around. Did anyone use this keyboard solution already ?

Subject: Machine specs..., WAP - gateway problem, Handyday 2005,
Answer to: Tom Robertson
Re.: Machine specs... - If you tell us that you installed the Operating System, you can't have a regular S7 which has got the OS in ROM. So most probably you have an S7 that was upgraded to a nBook. I am not sure whether or not you can use Wifi on it, others will tell you that. Yes, the dimming screen is a known problem of the S7 and pushing on the S7 tab is the solution.
Answer to: Chris Cooper
Re.: WAP - gateway problem - I seem to remember (it is quite some time ago) that there is a special WAP program for the Psion to use the WAP service and that you can't use it in the internet program. Maybe you will find it on Martin's great Psion website ?
Answer to: Arabbitte
Re.: Handyday 2005 - Yep, I was one of the people giving the flak and it was not so much about their decision as well as the way they handled my emails and the quite rude approach to me. Anyhow, please do report back on Handyday 2005 in comparison to 2004, as I seem to remember that they changed some things in the program that also made me decide to stick with the great functioning 2004 version. Maybe you will prove me wrong ?
