I found out that Cingular has a CSD capability but you have to pay $3.99 for the service.  I paid it and I now have my 9290 on line.  Now I would like to find some maps of the US and UK for it.  Seem kind of hard to find.  I do have Steve's wonderful Mapper/GB like I had on my Psions.
Thanks,
Bob

Subject: WIFI on a NB; & switching Opera versions

Hello All,

two matters for your consideration.

OPERA:

1. Having recently performed a complete reinstall of EPOC v1.05, in a hope to get Opera v.5 running; all went well with Opera v5 running from the iconbar.

However, when I clicked on an image (JPEG) file that had been iconised with an Opera 'O', the file opened under the older version 3.16. Which has now become the default version.

How can I get the more modern version to run, and send the older version back to whence it came? Preferably without having to perform a full reset again?

NB WIFI:

2. Now that I have successfully found a Buffalo wi-fi card for my Netbook, what settings do I need to change to get it working?

And when it is inserted into the PCMCIA slot, should the LED turn on? Or is that for only when it finds itself in a Hot Spot?

I have found reference in ControlPanel>Ethernet>Settings to the '802_11-Lucent' card. This is now selected. Is that all that's required?

Having never gone 'wi-fi ' before, what should I do when I go to say, Starbucks, for example?

Many thanks.

regards

Peter

Subject: Synchronising Outlook

Hi All,

Just to let you know I've found an answer to the problem of synchronising Outlook entries between two Window$ machines that had plagued me for 2/3 years. I know it's slightly off-topic, but I can't imagine I've been the only person with this problem and the solution is blindingly easy,..............when you know how!! It certainly saved me of having to go down the route of trying to use my 5mx and PsiWin to do this which I asked for guidance/advice from the Digest before. I can imagine the PsiWin route may have worked, but this solution is much easier and simpler.

For most of the time I'd discovered that by using the export/import facility within Outlook I could transfer the huge .pst file between the two machines. This was incredibly clunky and time-consuming, and I often got it wrong because I ended up with numerous duplicate entries.

I'd love to say it was me that thought of the solution, but I can't tell a lie as my nose is already long enough as it is, it was a Micro$oft Outlook 2nd level technician who told me how! If you open up File --> Data File Management.... and then note where the default location for the main Outlook data file is. Navigate to this location and copy this file. Then transfer this file to the mirror location on the other machine. You don't have to worry about choosing which files to export and whether or not you do, or don't, want duplicates created when you use the export/import facility in Outlook as I'd been doing. When you open up Outlook on the other machine you have an exact copy of ALL your Outlook entries, i.e. contacts, calendar entries are the same on both machines.

I have automated this process by using Second Copy 2000, (http://www.secondcopy.com/) a copying/synchronisation/back-up software programme, to copy the exact file over my ad-hoc WiFi network - with other files, like my lecture notes, or other frequently changed documents, I use the synchronise option instead of the copy function and this way the time stamp on the individual files are looked at and the latest version of the same document is then put on the other machine. I do not have any commercial links to this company, but I would be happy to recommend it as the software is simple and effective,.........it must be because I've been able to suss it out!!

Hope this might be of interest to some of the Digest, and apologies if it isn't.

Regards,
Gary Jenkinson

Subject: ER6 emulation for OPL

This could be of interest to the few OPL programmers here, particularly if they now have a Symbian (esp. Communicator) device.  I have released the first version of my "ER6 emulation for OPL" package on www.freepoc.org :

This package comprises a collection of OPH, OXH & OPM files, which provides fairly faithful emulation of the ER6+ (Symbian) version of OPL on ER5 (Psion) devices.

As it is implemented using normal OPL files, certain aspects of ER6 OPL cannot be faked, and so they have to be contained (and sometimes abstracted) by wrapper procedures.

For this & other reasons there also exists a Symbian version of this package, which should allow exactly the same source code of a program to be compiled on both Psion & Symbian devices - if it is used correctly.

This package can be used to port an existing Psion app to Symbian devices, but doing most of the work on a Psion, and keeping the source code for both devices the same.  This package can also be used to port a Symbian app to Psions, or even just write new apps which will easily run on both systems.

It can be found at http://www.freepoc.org/viewapp.php?id=76

N.B.  I have also released an update to TubeRoute, which is compatible with this package.

Subject: ER5: Gmail using Opera

I was pleased to see that I could access my Gmail email account using Opera for Epoc version 3.62 release 1.04. on my MC218.

What I was NOT able to do was attach a file to the outgoing email.
I kept tapping the "attach file" button to the right of the little box showing the name of the attachment, but nothing happened.

Has anyone had success in sending emails from a Gmail account via Opera that included attachments? Would be grateful for any tips.

Peter

Hi,

Anyone had this problem with Gmail on the Mbook? I can receive mails Ok -and reply to them using Opera5. If I try to send a new message or reply and add a cc I just get a server error and the message is lost.

Cheers Jon Welford

Subject: Fax Viewer for Series 5

I'm looking for the ability to sign a received fax on my Series 5, and send it back.  Through MessageSuite 1.52 capabilities, I can drag-n-copy just the screen of the fax--but not the whole fax--and copy to Sketch and fax a return from there.

But I need the ability to be able to fax back the entire signed page.

I'd rather not join an e-fax service, thus receiving a TIFF file, then working with MBMView.  Is there a fax viewer that will open an ER3 fax and let me sign it?

Thanks,
Jake

Subject: Several directories at the same time

Hello !

I have a Psion and I am very happy with it ; but I know I must start
looking for a replacement ...
There is one thing which is easily done with a Psion and wich seems
difficult with all other PDAs :
I have 3 different telephone directories ("private", "professional" and
"corporate") ; they have different columns and of course "corporate" is
very big (6600 lines x 16 columns ; no pb to browse it on a 5mx).

Does anyone know how to do the same on a "modern" PDA (transfer the
files from the PC, have all 3 files open at the same time, and quickly
switch from one to the other to look for names and phone numbers) ?

Thank you.
