Subject: Debian 3.1 for the netBook
Hello!
I notice that SargeBook - Debian 3.1 has been released for the netBook. Has anyone implemented it and if so, what are the initial comments re performance, facilities available and what it opens up for the netBook community. As there is little going on in the EPOC world now I want to contemplate a move to linux, which I am considering for the PC as well.
Regards,
Jim Thomson.

Oh, the joys of the Psion DATA application! It gave you “enough rope to hang yourself” and certainly I did. This meant that I – like you – had a number of wonderful free-format data files with all sorts of proprietary (i.e. the things you don’t see on a contacts application) details in them. When the time came to move from this to a more formal structure so that I could export my contacts into Outlook, it all came unstuck.
Maybe what you describe doesn’t use DATA, but whatever the current source of this data is, I think the answer is to store all your contacts in an application that can support the vcard format. There are (or at least were) freeware programs that can convert your data files into the this format, but these take time and are not perfect. I’m not sure if you have a choice though. Once you formalize your data into a proper contacts format, it is then easy to move them from platform to platform. In my case, I moved them easily from Psion 5mx to Outlook, to Palm V5 and most recently to Symbian v7 on my Sony Ericsson P910i phone.
An alternative would be to maintain 3 word documents but the numbers could probably not be dialed from there – you would have to copy and then paste into the phone application. This is all platform dependent however. On my P910i, I look up the contact and then just click dial. If they have more than one number, I’m offered a choice. And when they dial me, I get to see who is calling. Indeed, I could even have their picture appear when they call, but I don’t bother.
A final point – you can categorise your contacts into "private", "professional" and "corporate”, etc but in most platforms I have worked with, these categorizations are not maintained after a sync :-(

Subject: Is there a crack at the top of your keypad?
I saw a reference to this in a forum and wondered how anybody could be so rough as to crack the keypad on a P910. I then looked at mine and discover mine was also cracked! The crack is (currently!) tiny and normally invisible. If it’s there, it is between the arrow and the “c” key at the top-middle of the keypad. It can be seen if you gently press the “c” key and this will open the crack up so it is visible …
Can I ask all owners to do this simple test and let me know if they see anything. If this is a common problem, it may be possible to get it repaired under warranty. I’ve seen these for sale on the web but they cost about £40 …

Subject: GMail on Opera 5
Jon,
I haven't gotten to the point of trying to send an attachment, but,
reading your message, I did get up the courage to receive and send
mail to my GMail address with my MBook.
I find that I cannot read the text on the MBook. Being familiare with
the screen setup from use of GMail with my Dell, I navigated and was
able to send an email to my Psion and Tungston C.
Do you have a small print problem on your NBook screen? I tried zoom
and the large size was still not readable. I am running Opera 3.62.
Could this be my problem???
Where do I find and ownload Opera 5?
TIA,
jim - port townsend, wa, usa

This may not be the same issue, but I have a note that covers a similar problem from my Psion days.
To restore the association between html files and Opera rename the Opera folder in System\apps to Opera2 (say) and then change it back again. I used to use an OPL program to do this using the RENAME file command.

Answer to: Bob
Re.: Cingular has a CSD capability - Could you explain pls what Cingular is and what CSD cpabillity ? Thanks
Answer to: Peter McCafferty
Re.: WIFI on a NB - There is no need to change any setings, it should just work. The activitiy light will come on when inserting the card, but it will only start working once you try to connect to a wireless network. However, if the network is protected you will have to set the network to allow the Buffalo card to connect, the ID number you need for this should be printed on the card. As to your Opera problem, why not install MBMView to open JPG files ?
I am not sure you can just connect atStarbucks as they require you to pay and than you get a password to enter their system, but I might be wrong, I never tried it.

Re.: Several directories at the same time - The newer macines indeed do not have this capabillity. I had to work at this for some time and combined all my addresses in one file on the P910i and divided the file internally between the different options. You can set different folders in the file like "Corporate" and "Private" and than show only the contacts belonging to that folder. Once you have put in the few hours of owrk to combine them all it works just the same and as it is one file, it is open all the time. However, do make sure you have a proper back-up as otherwise you could loose it all !!
