Dear Itamar & rest of the digest team.

I think it's a good idea to expand to include other formats, in the same way as Palmtop User changes from just Psions to all PDA's & smartphones.

Answer to: Anders Hernborg

Re.: Sync calender Psion 5mx > Palm Treo 650 - No, I don't think there is any other way besides via Outlook. The Treo is a Palm which is a totally different operating system which will not talk directly to an EPOC machine.

Answer to: Norbert Fernkorn

Re.: Question of the future - As said already, the digest is already for ALL Epoc AND Symbian devices so everybody, go ahead with your Symbian questions and problems.

Answer to: Ian Chapple

Re.: P910i - I think you are right that it is a good device but what disturbed me mostly was the smallish screen which could not be turned into landscape mode. This made for example viewing of spreadsheets a difficult task. A further problem I found was reading faxes that came in as TIF files in my mailbox. It was impossible to enlarge and read them without forever having to move the screen left and right and back again for each line. It also lacks Wifi and the screen is by todays standards not great anymore. For example, in the cradle on my dashboard I could not read the menus while with my Qtek 9100 they are crisp and clear. Probably the new P990 is better but than it would mean investing again in all the software so it had no advantage for me over other operating systems.

Answer to: Anders Hernborg

Re.: Treo 650 - Yes, with the standard software on the Qtek you are right that you need several steps to get where you want to be. However, with a relatively small investment of third party software I added a program launcher including directly dialing phone numbers and send SMS messages to preset receivers and PBreeze Today plugin to directly view the next 5 days (it can do up to 7 days) of my diary, due and overdue tasks and contacts with a much better search function than contacts has (with each letter of the name you type the search is narrowed down until you get the contact, usually you don't need more than 3 letters to be left with just a few names to choose from).

Daniel,

Firstly, on the Series 7, older models could have the microphone come loose and stop working, so test recording first.

The microphone is reasonably good, however it can pick up the hum of the screen so quiet talkers may not be as clear as you would like.

The inbuilt Record program uses the Psion sound format that can be converted to PC format by PsiWin.  This format takes about 470k a minute and it is advisable that recording is done to the C drive only so the time available is dependent on the free memory available.

If you use EPOC Voice recorder (ENoteM) from Alexander Zavorine (had a little trouble finding the download but seems to be ok from: http:\\www.freefunfiles.com/software/pda/epocapplications/mp3-voice-recorder.html)you can, by creating a file with a .mp3 extension, record to mp3 giving about 125k per minute - quality is good.

Try recording to CF card, though because the slow speed of writing to CF over the internal memory, you can get clicks and lost sound.

Regards
Davi

Answer to Blair Robinson :

Blair, assuming that you own a Windows machine, your problem with your iPod might be that you did not load the program to make it work from the CD ROM that came in the box (this is called a "driver", if you want to impress your 7 yr old granddaughter). If you use a Mac - as you should!
- this should not happen, because drivers are included in OS X.
If the above sounds like Sumeric to you, do not hesitate to contact me in private and I will help you out to set up you iPod up and running.

I do not wish to do so on the Digest, since this is out of scope with it. But not out of scope of the helpful community that make up the readers of the Digest!

PS: as dinosaurs go, you look fairly young at 65. And don't worry!
Although I am indeed a bit younger than you, my teenage daughter still marvels at the fact that, although clearly brain damaged, I am still clinically alive... much to her delight, because I regularly set up and maintain her computers (she uses 2 of them) and iPod when she makes disasters!

Kind regards,

I reluctantly agree to the broadening of scope of the Digest. I'm reluctant because I fear it becoming a general free for-all which will lose all usefulness (there are just so many different options out there). Therefore, I think that Cyril's comment would make a useful restriction: PDAs/phones which in some way carry on the design ideals of the Psions. On this basis, to my mind, keyboard entry would be a test for inclusion on the Digest. This would restrict the field considerably.

For myself, I've just moved to the T-mobile Vario (Qtek 9100). Am very impressed with the hardware - but the Windows Mobile operating system is not a patch on EPOC on my MC218 (sitting forlornly on my desk), even with extra software.

Sigh, still searching.

Ed.

P.S. Thanks to all, especially the moderators, for such a continually helpful Digest.

Hi Itamar,

I published quite an extensive letter to 'The Digest' around the 1st October 2006 about the virtues of the Treo, and you replied to it !.

But I can repost it if necessary.

Regards,
Mike Dyer.

Subject: Sync calender Psion 5mx > Palm Treo 650

I am too lazy to look through all msgs in the Digest to find the answer... I have through the yrs used an S3, 5, 5mx and also have 2 netbooks.. I have now bought a Palm Treo 650, a new one from Expansys I found very cheap, just around 146 £.
I have used my Psion 90 % just for calender, contacts and the Money program. I have never seen a need for regularly synching my Psion with Microsoft Outlook.
To copy my full calender in my Psion 5mx to my Treo,  is the smoothest way to first sync my Psion with Outlook (PC) and then Outlook to Treo or is there any other better way??

Anders Hernborg, Sweden

Hi Anders,

I'd definately sync your 5mx to Outlook first and then from Outlook to your Treo.
Gosh your Treo 650 was a good price, I guess the Treo 680 has caused the prices to go down on the older model.

Regards,
Mike Dyer.

Hi Gernot,

Why would the standard recording program of the S7 / nBook not work ?

Hi,
did recordings on a Netbook several times, no problem, if the microphone works :-) Software to use: i recommend ENoteM for recording (mp3). Just take a short note and "save it as" test.mp3
Another option is to use Soundtrans, which can transform Epoc sound to wave-Sound.
Where to get this software ?
http://folder.jonasbark.de/for EPlayM and ENoteM and lots more !  (As you might know)
http://www.pscience5.net/LFAll.htmfor Soundtrans and lots more ! (As you know for sure)

Happy recording
Gernot from Germany
