Subject: Re: Limitations of CompactFlash Cards
Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the help and comments about the problem I was having with CompactFlash card with my 5mx.
The problem is now solved !
I should point out that all the CompactFlash cards I was using were 'standard' ones not high speed, that includes the 512MB SanDisk one I bought specifically got the 5mx.
Ian Chapple provided the answer (Thanks Ian !), by suggesting I "re-format it in a card reader in FAT16 format".
I put it in my internal card reader of my desktop (which uses Windows XP) and rather than use the default "FAT32", I clicked on the drop down menu and changed it just to "FAT".
It doesn't say what FAT that is ... 16 or otherwise, which I thought a bit strange.
Anyway, after formatting like that, it was then recognised, but just to be on the safe side, I then reformatted it on my 5mx.
All works fine now !!!!!
I had to do the same formatting on my two 1GB cards for the netBook too, but they also work now as well !
I really don't remember this problem with smaller cards in the past, or maybe I just forgot !
Once again, thanks everyone, and especially Ian !
Kindest Regards,
Steve Denney

Position taken using my hand-held Garmin eTrex in their car park. I don't normally use it these days, but I was expecting to have to leave my 9500 with them for a few days, and wanted to be sure that I could find them again! (Normally I use TomTom Mobile 5 on my 9500, which is great - except it has a habit of crashing, if you switch to another app.)

I don't know what your criteria for Agenda usage is, so I can't really say! The 9500's Calendar app is the closest thing you will get to the old Psion Agenda in a vaguely modern device, AFAIK. They did simplify it a little bit, but nothing that causes me any problems (or even notice). (BTW, Steve Litchfield has mentioned how to make the Calendar Day view approximate the old Agenda Day view.)
But I do find Calendar kind of slow (see my previous 9500 rant), which seems ridiculous on such a powerful device. (It seems like Symbian & Nokia have concentrated on slowing down the old blazingly-fast EPOC core... One can only assume they let Windows programmers "improve" it! )
Side note: If you do eventually buy a 9500, you will doubtless find many things to complain about (see my rant). But that is probably true of any device! Even Psions had their many flaws, although in thoses cases it was things like: a dingy reflective screen (5mx), unreliable screen cable (5mx), slow/crap web browser, poor support for modern protocols (web, email, bluetooth, IR file exchange), non-replacable batteries (Revo), unreliable battery charging system (Revo), and so on.

Subject: Nokia 9500, Oops MBook dead,
Answer to: Alan Morris
Re.: Nokia 9500 - Surely when not working a connection with Broadband works out a lot cheaper than via your mobile phone ? If you have a PC at home you can use MochaPPP to connect, otherwise sell some Psion stuf fand get a 2nd hand mBook or netBook with which you can use a Wifi card. I use my netBook all over the house (yes, even there ... <G>). My experience with using a mobile phone (GPRS) for emailing is an expensive hobby. I use my mobile as little as possible as ouside my free minutes it is still expensive.
The diary of the EPOC machines is very good indeed but I think that if your requirements are not too great that the 9500 diary is still a good tool to use. And at least you always ahve it with you.

Re.: Oops MBook dead - I am glad you got it to work again but keep in mind that sooner or later our EPOC machines will stop working, they don't have the eternal life. I think it is best to get used to the idea and to orientate yourself for when it will happen. I still use my netBook for several functions and it works a real treat, immediate switch on and just such a great keyboard allowing touchtyping.
