Yes, your CF card is corrupt. Which, as you may imagine, is a bad thing. Potentially other files could get damaged, or you might even loose all of them :-(
So I suggest that you:
1. Backup all the files you can, either onto another CF card, or onto another computer.
2. Either (a) format the card in your Psion, and then copy your files back,
or (b) download Atelier's Essential Disk Utilities (EDU) from www.pscience5.net , install CheckDisk to your C disk, and then use it to repair your CF card.
As to how it could have got corrupted - there are lots of ways. Removing the card before your Psion had finished writing to it (it's best to switch your Psion off before removing the CF card). Your Psion crashed in the middle of writing to the card (unlikely I know!). You let Windows touch your CF card - although some memory card readers seem to be much worse than others. Or you have just used your CF card too much, and it is now worn-out in some areas...

Back the card up as best you can and then reformat it and restore the back up. These files with dodgy names are caused when the FAT is overwritten by a data file. You are potentially moments away from losing the whole card's worth of data. (BTDTGTTS)

If you choose this option, make sure that you backup EVERYTHING. That includes the "System" folder, which is usually hidden by your Psion. You can make it visible by going to Tools/Preferences (or pressing Ctrl-K), and then ticking both "Show hidden files" and "Show 'System' folder".

You almost certainly have a corrupt CF card that you need to format as soon as you can - if not sooner! Take the card out and recover all your files to a desktop computer but beware some will not copy as they are corrupt - recover as many as you can and supplement them with your latest (daily!) backup. Then format the CF card, copy back all the files you saved and put it back in your MBook.
I find it's a good idea to regularly take out the CF card, backup all the files to a desktop computer, format the card and copy the files back because CF cards get corrupted from time to time.
On the Series 5 low batteries result in corrupt CF cards - I imagine it's the same with the netBook and variants - keep your battery well charged!
Best of Luck!

Alan - thanks for the answer. I'll try the cleaning. Before I do, did you follow / do you have any advice for opening the machine?
Thanks,

,
* On my MalayBook's SanDisk CF card, I have a rogue file that I can't * get rid of. It purports to have the impossible filename " ing.ks. " * (with a full stop at the end); when I click Ctrl-P for its properties * I get "Not found" and the same when I try to delete it or rename it; * in the system screen it claims to be 1200 MB in size (not bad for a
* 256 MB card!)- but in the directory tree it claims to be about 28 MB.
* A soft reset doesn't remove it. The only minor nuisance it creates
* (apart from the memory it uses) is that it causes an error message
* when I backup to my PCD via PisWin.
Hello Chris,
A year ago I had the same problem with a backup-file from BackUp by Ralph Sprenger.
The solution is, make a backup of your CF-card, then you format the card, and after that you copy all the file onto the CF-card without the "corrupt" file.
Success

Kees.

Subject: Mbook Access
My Mbook seems frozen with the original "My Schoolbook" screen showing. No matter what key I press or icon I tap, I can't get beyond that screen. This happened to me once before, but I can't remember the
cure. I have a CF card installed with the OS image on it. I have tried a soft reset - to no avail. Do I have to attempt a hard reset - take out the backup and main batteries and start from scratch? Or what. I looked around in the netbook manual and couldn't find an answer, though I may not have looked in the right place. But I don't suppose the netbook ever shows that screen, which I assume must have been connected with the intended use of the Malaybooks in Malasia. What must I do to restore it to usability.

I've had that problem once. The only way I could get rid of the file was to do a hard reset then restore (FastBackup is excellent for that).

Subject: Automatic link downloader for Psion?
I would like to take a list of various URLs, like this:
http://www.iht.com/indexes/topten/index.html
http://www.csmonitor.com/cgi-bin/redirect.pl?textEdition http://news.bbc.co.uk/text_only.stm
and then use my Psion to automatically download them in one fell swoop.
Could there be a macro or app that already does this? It seems like it should be a pretty basic operation. Currently I have to bookmark each link separately and then select the bookmark individually
to start the download process, which is pretty cumbersome, especially when there
are lots of URLs I want to download.
Thanks in advance for any clever tips!
