Subject: RE: Netbook
I agree with the Netbook discussion. I have an Asus Eee PC and like it very much. But I have noticed that they are calling the smaller ones Netbooks.
I didn't know if Psion had Patented the name Netbook or not?????
Also on going back to Series 5mx. I have thought about it too. I dusted mine off an am considering using it again. That is why I asked the MC218 question I was dusting it off too.
Thanks,
Bobbyr

Bobby, you might try here http://www.410palm.com/in Canada.
While it talks about Palm, there are still photos of the 5mx and Revo on the Products page. I had a 5mx repaired here once, some years ago. I couldn't find an e-mail address, but you could phone them and ask if they still to Psions.
Resetting the stylus lock: Gently stick your fingernail or thin blade between the black and gray parts below the serial port and twist slightly to open the space a hair or two.
Hope this helps.

For yr stylus problem: try inserting a credit card (delicately...) in between the RS232 socket and the lower side of the casing until you hear a click

Subject: Screen glass cracked
Hello all
While trying to dismantle my spare 5mx so as to install a new screen cable from PsionFlexi, I crackerd the screen glass on one side. Does that prevent touch system to work and do I have to replace the screen, please ? Anyway, one has to be particularly dexterous to sold the cable into place...so maybe I'll find myself myself another spare 5mx (will be cheaper in the end).

Subject: Broken/Damaged Psion 5MX's
A frequent point made in recent issues is of failure / damage to machines.
It is worth mentioning again that Paul at PSIONFLEXI does a very good job of repairing Psion 5 or 5MX's. The service is worldwide.
Secondhand ones on Ebay are likely to need new screen cables quite soon anyway in my experience .
This is written by a very satisfied customer.(No commission from Paul!)
Happy New Year to everyone.

Subject: netBook vs. netbook !
Hmm, I wondered how long it would be before this subject rose it's head ! I could have also used the title "What's in a name ?" rather than "netBook vs. netbook".
When I first read an article in a computer magazine (I think it was Computer Shopper but can't be certain) when these small computers
first came on the market, that said something like "Intel have
invented the term 'netbook' for the new computers that are emerging
to surf the internet", I immediately thought, "Hey, wait a minute I
have a Psion netBook !".
Whether the fact that the Psion has a capital "B" for the book makes
any difference (legally) I don't know, but what an unfortunate name
for Intel "to think up" !!!
Why didn't they call them "Surfbooks", as that more describes what
they are intended for ?
I have often said that "laptop" was also an unfortunate name too, as firstly how many people actually use them on their lap ? .. and also
it is ill advised that gentlemen use them in this way for 'medical' reasons, as it can have unfortunate effects on certain parts of a gentleman's anatomy !
I for one have never used a "laptop" on my lap, mainly because the
two I have are a HP 17" model weighing in at 4.22Kg, and just
recently I purchased a Sony 18.4" weighing in at much lighter (?) 3.9Kg. Admittedly these are designed as 'desktop replacements' and only a
fool would use them as a "laptop".
Hewlett-Packard (HP) have always, and still do, describe these as "notebooks" which is a better description I suppose, but even that
cam be misconstrued as the little paper book you buy from a stationer
to write things in with a pencil (remember pencils ?).
Maybe the term "tabletop" would be better than notebook ?
Oh well, just my thoughts on the matter !
But I will still use the term "netBook" for my Psion, and go along
with HP and call my laptops "notebooks" !
Kindest Regards and Best Wishes for 2009 to all,
Steve

I wouldn't. Take a cheap ballpoint refill (the thin kind) or anything less thick than the tip of the stylus and longer. Stick it gently all the way in until sth. goes "click". You can't break anything, you don't need to force it either.
Hope it still works after all those years :-)
Best to all, and may our Psions be with us in 2009 and beyond :-)

Subject: 'downgrade' to 5mx,
Att.: Kit Byatt
Re.: 'downgrade' to 5mx - Thanks for the long message and the ranting. It is indeed interesting how we are all still using these machines, even though I don't own a 5MX anymore and my only EPOC machine is the netBook. The larger screen, larger keyboard and colour screen make it much more pleasurable to work with even though I can't put it in my pocket. Still, a lot of the functions have been taken over by my PC, some by my WM mobile phone and lately quite some by the Ipod Touch. However, these are not machines that I use for input of text, at least not more than a line or two max. I still use the netBook for occasional emailing, for my turn of managing the digest and mainly with ABP5 and Money for my money matters.
The ease of use, also due to programs like Macro5 and Merlin, is unsurpassed in my humble opinion.
We will continue the digest for as long as there is interest. We are still almost 600 subscribers worldwide.
Best regards,
Itamar
